This indicates a prohibited operation. The prohibited operation is indicated
symbolically in or near the barred circle.
This indicates an obligatory safety precaution. The obligatory operation is

For safety, do not open the equipment covers.
If repair is required, contact the sales representative, branch office, or agent at the telephone
number and address given in this document or in the equipment operation manual.
Although not recommended by Anritsu Corporation, if it is really imperative to open the covers
for emergency repair, take great care not to touch any dangerous parts. Always request repair
by a trained engineer who understands the hazards.
Anritsu Corporation will not accept liability for any injuries sustained as a result of opening the
equipment covers.

WARNING
This equipment cannot be repaired by the user. DO NOT at-
tempt to open the cabinet or to disassemble internal parts.
Only Anritsu-trained service personnel or staff from your
sales representative with a knowledge of electrical fire and
shock hazards should service this equipment. There are
high-voltage parts in this equipment presenting a risk of se-
vere injury or fatal electric shock to untrained personnel. In
addition, there is a risk of damage to precision parts.
When supplying power to this equipment, connect the acces-
sory 3-pin power cord to a 3-pin grounded power outlet. If a
grounded 3-pin outlet is not available, before supplying
power to the equipment, use a conversion adapter and
ground the green wire, or connect the frame ground on the
rear panel of the equipment to ground. If power is supplied
without grounding the equipment, there is a risk of receiving a
severe or fatal electric shock.
CAUTION
ALWAYS disconnect the power cord from the power outlet
BEFORE changing a fuse. If the cord is not disconnected,
there is a risk of receiving a fatal electric shock.
When changing fuses always use the same fuses as de-
scribed in this manual or of the same rating and characteris-
tics as described on the label attached to the equipment cabi-
net.
The fuse marking T3.15A means a timelag-type fuse. Use a
3.15 A fuse for 100-V systems and a 1.6 A fuse for 200-V sys-
tems.

Power Line Fuse Protection
For safety, Anritsu products have either one or two fuses in the AC power lines as
requested by the customer when ordering.
Single fuse: A fuse is inserted in one of the AC power lines.
Double fuse: A fuse is inserted in each of the AC power lines.

This manual is written for service personnel trained by Anritsu Service Training
Course and explains how to service the Anritsu MS9720A WDM Network Tester,
how to install the light source, how to install the latest software version, and how to
troubleshoot faults. It also explains repair by exchanging modules but does not de-
scribe parts-level repair of modules.
Refer to the operation manual (M-W1343AE) for a description of the operation meth-
ods, how to test the performance and for the periodic calibration procedures.

The MS9720A WDM Network Tester should be maintained by an Anritsu-
trained service engineer. The maintenance work includes the following:
• Upgrading software
• Troubleshooting and repairing faults
Removal of the covers and modules is explained in Section 2.
Upgrading software
The software for operating this tester is stored on floppy disk and can be updated.
To update the software, first, check the current software version by setting the
equipment to the Maintenance Mode. Detailed description of the Maintenance
Mode is provided in Section 3.

Troubleshooting and repairing faults
This tester is composed of the 14 exchangeable modules listed in Table 1-1. If the
tester develops a fault, it can be repaired simply by changing modules. The codes
on the right side of Table 1-1 corresponds to the codes in the circuit diagram and
table of constants.

plain how to troubleshoot faults and how to exchange modules.
Faulty modules are repaired at the Anritsu Plant. For parts-level repair to mod-
ules, send the module to Anritsu noting the description in item 6.2.

2.2.1 Removing Top Cover
1 Remove the screws 1 to 4 securing the Rear Foot Holders.
2 Remove the screw 5 securing the center of the top cover to the Rear Panel.
3 Rotate the Printer Cover Button 6 left or right and remove the Printer Cover.
4 Loosen the two screws 7 and 8 securing the Front Foot Holder at the top left
and top right of the Front Panel.
5 Gently lift the Top Cover at the Rear-Panel edge and remove it by sliding it
off towards the Rear Panel.
