Howtooperatethe Audionet PRE
Audionets PRE is ahigh performance audio pre-amplifier. This
systemis designed forabsolutelynaturalmusicreproduction and for
highestuser comfort.
Thefollowingwill giveyou all information abouthowto operateyour
PRE. Pleaseread this carefullybefore thefirstuse. Followingthese
instructions, yourPRE will giveyou long-lastingpleasure and
satisfaction.
I) Connectingthe system
Pleaseconnectthepower jack (1)attherear with yourwall outlet
(Pleaserefer to page8). Usetheprovided powercableoranother one
allowed foryourhomecountryspecifications.
NOTE:
Thepower specifications (2)ontherearmustmeet to your
homecountry specifications.
Themains-button(3)atrearmustbeswitchedoff.
PRE is averysensitivesystem. Pleaseensure thatall used connector
cables are in absolutelybestcondition.
Forconnectingorremovingaudio sources, PRE has to beswitched off
(stand by-state) ormustbemuted.
PRE has onebalanced and fiveunbalanced high levelinputs (4). Due
to thedualmono construction, leftand rightinputs are separated atthe
rear. Pleaseconnectleftand rightinputs to thecorrespondingoutputs
ofthedesignated high-levelsources, likeCD-player, D/A-converter,…
PRE has two balanced as well as onelineand oneinverted unbalanced
outputs (5)forconnectingpower-amplifiers.
Pleaseconnectleftand rightchannelto thecorrespondinginputs of
yourpower-amplifier. Ifbi-ampingis desired, pleaseusethetwo
balanced orthelineand theinverted outputs. In thesecond case, you
haveto changetheloudspeaker polarityoftheoneamplifier, thatis
connected to theinverted PRE-outputs (changeplus to minus and
minus to plus). Ifyou are unsure, yourdealer will help you.

To preventanynegativeinfluence on thesignal, PRE has no regular
tapemonitorloop orarec outselector.
Forrecordingpleaseconnecttheinputs ofyourrecordingsystem, like
DAT ortape-deck with themonitoroutputs (6)ofPRE. When the
recorder is connected to themonitoroutputs, forplayingback you
mustuseinputs No. 6 ofthePRE.
When inputNo. 6 is selected and active, themonitoroutputs are
always switched off. This is necessaryto preventdestructive
oscillation ofPRE and recorder. Therefore InputNo. 6 can notbeused
forasignalsource, which should berecorded.
When inputs No. 1 to 5 are selected, themonitoroutputs are always
on. You are free to usetheseinputs forplayback, when therecorder is
notconnected to themonitoroutputs ortherecorder inputs are
connected elsewhere.
In combination with Audionets AMPIor/and DACthePRE can
switch on and off thewholesystem. PleaseconnecttheAudionetlink
(7)on therear with aToslink opticalfibre cableto theAudionetlink
ofAMPIor/and DAC.
II) Switchingonand off the mains
PRE is designed as astand by-unit. To bringPRE into thestand by-
state, pleasepress themains power switch (4)on therear. PRE will be
in thestand by-statedisplaying"Audionet".
To switch off themains is onlynecessaryin cases oflonger absence
likeholidays. Forswitchingoff pleasepress again themains power
switch on therear. Lookingfromabove, theswitch nowshows you a
"0"and thedisplayturns off.
NOTE:
PREis a microprocessorcontrolledunit. Dueto this, all systems
connectedwiththeoutputs mustbeoff and powereddownwhen
PREis to beswitchedonoroff themains attherear. Otherwise
PREcoulddestroy yourpower amps and loudspeaker systems.

III) Operatingthe system
All functions ofthePRE are completelymicroprocessorcontrolled.
This guarantees highestprecision, exclusivefunctions, easyoperation
and protection againstoperationalfaults.
ForswitchingPRE on, pleasepress the power button atthefront
panel. PRE needs 10 sec. forwakingup and then works. PRE will
comeup softly.
To switch thePRE off, pleasepress thepower button again and the
PRE needs 10 sec. forgoingto sleep and then will remember all your
latestsettings.
When switchingon and off atthefrontpanelorwith theremote
controlyou do nothaveto care aboutyourother systems.
To setthedesired volume, pleaseturn themagneticbuffered volume
knob atthefrontpanel. This is an incrementalimpulseunit withouta
stop.
Pleaseturn clockwiseifhigher and counterclockwiseiflower volume
is desired.
PRE shows you themaster volumewith arangefrom-80 dBto
+10 dBin thedisplay. This are real1 dB-steps relativelyto theinput
signal. To adjustthevolume-offset, pleaseread „programming“
(page4).
PRE has asoftinputselectfunction. Pleasepress the input button at
thefrontpanelto selectoneofthesixinputs. PRE sequentiallyselects
theinputs fromNo. 1 to No. 6 on everytouch. When changingthe
input, PRE regulates volumedown to -80 dB, mutes theoutputs,
switches theinputs, activates theoutputs and finallyregulates volume
up to thelevelbefore. Howto changethesequence ofinputs please
read „programming“(page4).
PRE has asoftmutefunction. Ifdesired ornecessaryto mutePRE,
pleasepress the mute button atthefrontpanel.
When muting, PRE regulates volumedown to -80 dBand then
switches off theoutputs. Ifyou press themutebutton again, PRE
activates theoutputs and regulates thevolumeup to thelevelbefore.
Ifyou changetheinputs in themuted state, pleasepress themute
button again as before. In this casethevolumelevelwill stayat-80
dB. Nowyou haveto setthevolumewith thevolumeknob. This is
provided to protectyou fromunexpected levels ofsignal-sources,
which maybemuch louder as theonebefore.
PRE is programmableforfunctions providingyou with newand easy
possibilities to adjustthesystemto yourneeds.. All individualsettings
will beremembered, also when PRE will beswitched off themains.
You can programmethefollowing:

*Inputs, which usuallyhavedifferentsignallevel, can beadjusted to
thesamevolume
*Inputs can begiven an individualname, e.g. "CD1", "CD2",
"Darling"etc.
*Theinputs No. 1 to 6 attherear can begiven anewchannel
number. You can createanewchannelsequence, which you can
selectwith theinputbutton atthefrontpanelortheremotecontrol.
Thetwo linealphanumericdisplaywill giveyou all information you
need aboutsettings:
*Firstline:channel, given nameofthechannel, assigned input
*Second line:master volumelevel, programmed volumeleveloffset
Forselectingthefunction, which should beprogrammed, pleasepress
the set button atthefrontpanel.
Forprogramming, pleasedo thefollowing:
1) Push thesetbutton once forashorttime.
2) Turningthevolumeknob clockwisedecreases theleveloftheleft
channel, turningcounterclockwisewill decreasetherightchannel’s
level.
Thelevelofeverychannelcan bedecreased up to 9 dB. Thesetting
is displayed numericallyand byarrows.
3) Push thesetbutton fourtimes to leavetheprogrammingmenu or
once for‘volumeoffset’and continuewith step 3)ofthefollowing

1) Selectthechannelto beadjusted
2) Push thesetbutton twice forashorttime. Thedisplayshows you a
flashingcharacter on thedisplayat"programmed leveloffset"
3) Turn thevolumeknob to adjustthedesired level. This is possible
within arangeof+/-6 dBto themaster volume
4) Push thesetbutton three shorttimes to exit oronce for‘name
programming’and proceed with step 3)ofthefollowing
1) Selectthechannelto begiven anewname
2) Push thesetbutton three shorttimes. You will see acursorunder
thefirstcharacter ofthename
3) Turn thevolumeknob and setthefirstcharacter, number orsign,
which is required forname
4) Push themutebutton once. Thedisplaynowshows thecursor
under thesecond character
5) Turn thevolumeknob as described in step 3
...and so on. All in all you can set10 characters
6) Push thesetbutton twice to exit oronce forchangingthe‘input
sequence’. Ifso, proceed with step 3)ofthefollowing.
1) Selectthechannel, which anewphysicalinputshould beassigned
to.
2) Push thesetbutton fourshorttimes
3) Turn thevolumeknob and setthephysical-input-number, to which
thedesired source is connected.
4) Push thesetbutton once to exit
Note:
Ifno changes are madefor10 seconds, thePREwill automatically
exittheprogramming menu.

Thedisplaycan showyou its information with three states of
brightness:Bright, normaland off. To setthis pleasepush theset-
button forlonger than two seconds.
Nevertheless, in thedisplayoff-statethefollowingis shown

IV) Usingthe remotecontrol
All functions ofthePRE can beoperated byAudionets remotecontrol
in thesamewayas described forthefrontpanel.
Pleasepush thecorrespondingbuttons oftheremotecontrolunit.
Usingtheremotecontroltheinputs can bedirectlyselected. For
settingthevolumelevel, pleasepush +or-oftheremotecontrol
volumebutton pair
