Important

PRE1 G3all unitsofyouraudiosystem havetobeswitchedoffto
preventdamage ofthe PRE1G3 or any ofthe otherconnectedunits.

4.1Placement
Important
·Itisrecommended toplacethePRE1 G3intoahighqualityrackor
onto a stable table.
·Do notexposetheunitto directsunlight.
·Do notcovertheventilation slots.
·Do notplace the PRE1 G3 in close range to heatsourceslike radiators.
·Donotplace the PRE1on top ofotherunits,especiallynoton top of
poweramplifiers,preamplifiersorsimilarthatproduce heat.Both
unitscouldsufferdamage fromthermaloverload.
·Do notuse the unit in placeswhereitisexposed to vibrations.
·Donotplace the unitclosetoloudspeakers orintothe cornerofa
roomwhereitisexposed tohighlevelsofsonicenergy,which might
reduce the sound qualityofthe unit.
4.2Mainsconnection
The mainsinput21 *ison the backpanelofthePRE1G3. Toconnectthe
unit tomainsuse the included mainscord.Ifyou prefertouse adifferent
powercordmakesure thatit meetsthe specificationsforyourhome country.
Important
·The electricalspecificationsofyour homecountry mustmeetthe
electricalspecificationsprinted ontothe back panel.

·The PRE1 G3isaClass Iunit and mustbe earthed. Pleaseensurea
stableearthconnection. Phase('hot'pin)ismarked onthebackpanel
('phase')21 .
·Ifyou connectthe mainscordpleasemakesurethatmainsswitch1
atthe backpanelisswitched off.
·Neverpull the mainsplugwhilethe PRE1 G3isswitched on!Before
youpull themainscordoff itssocket22atthe backpanel,powerdown
the unit to stand-bymodeand switch off the unit usingmainsswitch 1.
Onlyincasesofextended absence– likevacations–orifmassivetrouble
on the mainspoweristobeexpected you shouldswitch off thePRE1 G3
fromthe mainsusingmainsswitch1 .Todisconnectthe unitcompletely
frommainspull themainsplug.

·The useofhighqualitymainscordscouldimprovesound quality.

4.3Orientation ofmainsplug
Thecorrectpolarizationofmainsisimportantforreasonsofaudioclarity
and stability.Pleaseconnectthe mainscordsothatthe hotpinofthe wall
outletisconnectedtothepinofthe mainsinput22 marked 'phase'21 .
YourAudionetPRE1 G3isabletodetectawrongpolarization ofthe
mainsplugduringstart-up. Ifthe message
Attention: Mains
Phase incorrect!
appears inthedisplay,switch offthe unitand flipthemainspluginthe
wall outlet(see section 'Mainsphase detection'on page 16).
4.4Additional earthconnection
Included withthePRE1 G3you will find agreen-yellowcordforthe
additionalearthconnection.Attach thiscordtotheearthconnector2 on
the backpanelofthePRE1 G3and puttheplugintothemainssocket
rightbesidethemainscordofyourPRE1 G3. Thisensuresan additional
and stable earth connectionresultingin a bettersound.
Note
·We stronglyrecommend usingthe additionalearthconnection!
·Also, astableearthconnectionisnecessaryforthePRE1 G3detect-
ingthe polarization ofmainsphase correctly.

5Inputs and outputs
Important

5.1Inputs
The PRE1 G3isequippedwith5Cinch inputs11to15 and one bal-
anced(XLR)input16 forconnectingsignalsourcesatline level.Addi-
tionally, the monitorinput17 can used asanotherlinelevelinput.
Pleaseconnectthe leftand rightinputofthesamenumberprinted onthe
backpanelofthe PRE1 G3tothecorrespondingoutputofthe sourceyou
would like toconnecttothePRE1 G3.
5.2Outputs
ThePRE1 G3isequippedwithtwoCinch outputs OUT 1 6 and OUT2
7 aswellasone balanced(XLR)output XLROUTLEFT and
XLROUTRIGHT 5forthe leftand rightchanneltoconnectthe unitto
youramplifier(s).
UsetheCinch output OUT1 6 toconnectthe PRE1G3toyourpower
amplifier(s) usinghighqualityCinch cables.Alternatively,you maycon-
nectthe poweramplifierusingthebalanced(XLR)outputs
XLROUTLEFT and XLROUTRIGHT 5 incaseyourpoweramplifier
doesnotsupportCinch (line)inputs.
Note
·Ofcourseyou may usethe Cinch output OUT2 7 toconnectthe
unit toyouramplifier(s).The menu item SET SUB OUT hastobe set
to Left & Right, otherwise the Cinch output OUT2 7 worksasa
Subwooferoutput(see section 'SetOut'on page 29).

printed rightbeside the connectors.
5.3Recording devices
You can connectup totworecordingdevicesoreffectprocessors tothe
PRE1 G3 forrecordingandplayback.
Connectthe recordingdevices(likeDATortape recorder)tothe re-
cordingoutput REC OUT 9ofthe PRE1 G3. Forplaybackpleasecon-
nectyourrecordingdevicesonlytoinputno. 5 IN 5 12ofthe PRE1 G3.
if theyarealsoconnected tothe output RECOUT 9 ofyourPRE1 G3.
Ifyou selectinputno. 5 IN 5 12the output REC OUT 9 isswitched off
topreventanyfeedbackloopsbetween yourrecordingdevice and the
PRE1 G3.
Pleaseuse inputsno.1 16 tono. 4 13and no. 611 toconnectsources
you like to recordfrom. With theseinputsthe recording output REC OUT
9 isalwaysactive
5.4Monitor
Themonitorloop ofthePRE1 G3makesit possibletoinsertarecording
device (forread afterwriteverify)oran effectsprocessor(e.g.surround
decoders)intothe signalpath.
Connectmonitoroutput MONITOROUT 8 ofthePRE1 G3tothe in-
putofthe unit you wouldliketoinsert.Also, connectthe outputofthe
unit tothe monitorinput MONITOR IN 17 ofthe PRE1 G3.

5.5Phono
ThePRE1 G3canbe upgraded withaphono preamplifier.Inthiscase
useinputno. 6 IN 6 11 marked PHONO toconnectyourturntableto
the PRE1 G3. Connectthe earthwireofyourturntabletothe earthcon-
nector GND 2rightbeside inputno. 6.Forfurtherinformation on the
optionalphonomodule please referto itsuser'smanual.

·Ifthe PRE1 G3isupgradedwiththe optionalphonomodule, input
no. 6 IN 6 11 mustonlybe used toconnecta turntable.
5.6Audionet Link
Foryourconvenience, the PRE1 G3can switch on/offallotherAudionet
units(e.g.poweramplifiers) connectedvia'AudionetLink'byasimple
touch on the remote controlorthe power keyon the frontpanel.
You onlyneed asimpleoptical'Toslink'cable. Connectthe 'Audionet
Link'output OUT1 18 or OUT 2 19 ofyourPRE1G3tothe'Audio-
netLink'inputofunit to be controlled.
ThePRE1 G3isequipped withtwo'AudionetLink'outputs OUT1 18
and OUT 2 19 .'AudionetLink'output1 OUT 1 18 isalwayson
whilethePRE1 G3isswitched on. However,'AudionetLink'output
OUT2 19 iscontrolled dependingon the settingsfortheheadphones
output. Please referto section 'SetHeadphones'on page 23.
Therefore, use'AudionetLink'output OUT 2 19 inordertoconnect
poweramplifiers tothe PRE1 G3via'AudionetLink'.Connectunitsyou
wouldliketocontrolindependentlyfromthe headphonessettings(e.g.
tuner, CD playeretc)to 'AudionetLink'output OUT1 18 .
Tip
·Audionetsource unitsand poweramplifiers areusuallyequipped not
onlywith an 'AudionetLink'input, butadditionallywith an 'Audionet
Link'outputtoconnectfurtherAudionetdevicestobecontrolledvia
'AudionetLink'inadaisychain.Connectthis'AudionetLink'output
tothe'AudionetLink'inputofthe nextAudionetunit usingasimple
optical'Toslink'cableallowingyou toswitchon/off yourcomplete
AudionetsystembyyourAudionetpre amplifier.
5.7External power supplyEPSor EPX
Inordertouseone oftheoptionalexternalprecision powersupplies
AudionetEPS orAudionetEPXwithyou PRE1 G3pleaseproceed as
follows:
1. Make sure bothPRE1 G3and EPS/EPXare switched off and
disconnected frommains.
2. ConnecttheEPS /EPXwiththeincluded cabletoinputjack EPS
20 on the back panelofthe PRE1 G3. The shapeoftheplug
prevents any wrong polarity. The small'nose'inside the plug has

toface upwards.Nowscrewtheringofthe plug ontotheEPS
inputjack 20.
3. Connectboth (!!)units (PRE1 G3 and EPS/EPX)to mains.
4. First,switchon theEPS /EPXon itsbackpanel.Then switch on
the PRE1 G3with the mainsswitch 1 .
5. Usethe power keyon the frontpanelorthekey PRE ofthe
AudionetMetalRemoteControl RC 1 or RC 2 toswitchon the
PRE1 G3. ThePRE1 G3isnowreadytouseandgetsits power
fromtheexternalpowersupply EPS /EPX.
6. Toswitch off the PRE1G3intostand-by mode,usethe power
key on the frontpanelor key PRE oftheAudionetMetalRemote
Control RC 1 or RC 2.
Important
·Never switch on orofftheEPS/EPXon itsback panelwhilethe
PRE1 G3 isoperating.
·Forfurtherinformationreferringtotheexternalpowersupply
EPS /EPXplease consultitsuser'smanual.
Tip
·Useahighqualitycable(forexampletheAudionetAPC)toconnect
the EPS /EPXto mains.The sound willimprove.
5.8Triggeroutput
Usetriggeroutput TRIGGER 3 tocontrol(e.g.switchon/off) non-
Audionetdevices. Ifyou switch on the PRE1 G3fromstand-bymode, the
triggeroutput3providesasignalof12 VoltsDC.Ifyou powerdown
the unit tostand-bymode,the signalofthe triggeroutput3 will be
0 Volts.
Tip
·Usea3.5 mm telephonemono plugtoconnectadevice tothetrigger
output3 ofyourPRE1 G3. The pinningisasfollows:

6Usage
All functionsofthe PRE1 G3 are microprocessorcontrolled. Thisguaran-
teeshighestprecision,exclusivefunctions,easyhandlingand protection
againstoperatingerrors.
6.1Powering up
Firstofall,pleasemakesureyourPRE1 G3isconnected correctlyto
yoursignalsources,poweramplifier(s) andmains(see section
'Installation and power supply'on page9and'Inputsand outputs'on
page 11).
The PRE1 G3isastand-byunit.Pleaseoperatethe mainsswitch 1 on
the backpanel.The display showsawelcomemessageforabriefmo-
ment. Afterthatthe PRE1G3 isin stand-bymode.
Onlyincasesofextended absence (likevacations)orif massivetrouble
on the mainspoweristobe expected(e.g.thunderstorms) itisrecom-
mended todisconnectthe PRE1 G3fromthe mains.WhilethePRE1 G3
isinstand-by mode, operatemainsswitch 1 on thebackpanel.The
displaywillgodark.Todisconnectthe PRE1 G3frommainscompletely,
you have to pullthe mainscord off the mainsjack22 .
Important
·Before you switch off the PRE1 G3frommains,power downand
discharge completelyallunitsconnected tothe outputsofthe
PRE1 G3.
6.2Switching on and off
Topowerup the PRE1 G3fromstand-bymode, pressthe power keyon
the frontpanel.The PRE1 G3issuesthemessage Waking up....In
casethemainsplughastheincorrectpolarization awarningwill appear
inthe display(see section 'Mainsphasedetection'on page16).Afterthat
the unitisin normaloperatingmode and readyto use.
Ifyou would like to switch off the unit, please press the power keyon the
frontpanel.Thedisplayshowsthe message Going to sleep.. and
unit entersthe stand-bymode.

·Ofcourse, you mayswitchon/offthePRE1 G3withthe Audionet
MetalRemoteControl RC 1 or RC 2.Fordetailedinformation please
referto section 'AudionetMetalRemote Control'on page 35.

6.3Mainsphase detection
Thecorrectpolarizationofmainsisimportantforreasonsofaudioclarity
and stability.Pleaseconnectthe mainscordthatthe 'hot'pinofthewall
outletisconnected tothepinmarked 'phase'21 ofthe mainsinput22
on the backpanel.The PRE1 G3recognizestheincorrectpolarization of
the mainsplugautomatically.Rightafterswitchingon theunit from
stand-bymode bypressingthe power keyon the frontpanelthefollow-
ingmessagewill appearinthe displayincasethemainspolarizationis
incorrect:
Attention: Mains
Phase incorrect!
Ifyou read the abovemessage, switch offthe unit bypressingthe power
key.Pleasewaituntilthedisplayno longerreads Goingto sleep....
DisconnectthePRE1 G3frommainsbyoperatingthemainsswitch 1.
Nowpullthe mainsplugand re-insertitintothemainssocketrotatedby
180°.
Ifyou switch on the unit again, the warningshouldnotappearnow.
Important
·Ifthe PRE1 G3issuesthe mainspolarizationwarningornowarning
atallforbothpositionsofthemainsplug,checktheconnection to
earthofyourmainssocketand mainscord. You havetoensure a
stableconnectiontoearthfor the mainsphasedetection ofthe
PRE1 G3 to work correctly!
6.4Using Audionet Link
YourPRE1 G3isequippedwithtwo'AudionetLink'outputs OUT 1 18
and OUT 2 19 allowingyou toswitch on/offfurtherAudionetunits
(e.g.poweramplifiers,CD playerortuner) connected via'AudionetLink'
(also see section 'AudionetLink'on page 13).
Ifthe restofyourAudionetsystemisconnected toyourPRE1 G3via
'AudionetLink',all linked unitswillbeautomaticallyswitched on /offas
soon asyou switchon/offyourPRE1 G3usingthe power keyon the
frontpanelorthe AudionetMetalRemote Control RC 1 or RC 2.

·The 'switchon/off'signalofthe 'AudionetLink'output OUT2 19 is
issued dependingontheheadphonessettings(seesection'SetHead-
phones'on page 23).

6.6Volume control
WhilethePRE1 G3isinnormaloperatingmode usekeys up and down
on the frontpaneltoadjustthe volume. up increases, down decreasesthe
volume.
ThevolumecontrolofthePRE1 G3runsinarangefrom–80 dBto
+6 dBinreal1dBstepsrelativelytotheleveloftheinputsignal.Differ-
encesininputlevelscanbe adjusted foreachinputchannelofthe
PRE1 G3 separately(see section 'OffsetAdjust'on page 26.

·Usekeys up and down alsotochangean option fromthe setup menu
(see section 'Setup menu'on page21)aswell astoselectan input

6.8Inputselection
Pushthe set keyon the frontpanelonce forless thantwoseconds.The
displayshows:
The 2nd line ofthe displayprovidesthe numberandthe (user-definable)
name ofthe currentlyselected inputchannel.
Usekeys up and down selectthe desiredinputchannel.Push set key
again(forlessthan 2seconds)toactuallyswitch totheselected input
channel.
The PRE1 G3featuresa'soft'inputselection. During the switchingof
inputs, firstthe volume isstepped downto –80 dB,followed byswitching
offtheoutputs.Nowtheinputsectionswitchestothe newinputchannel.
Afterwardstheoutputsareswitched on again, and finallythe volumeis
stepped up toitsoriginallevel.
Note
·Leavethe inputselection function byholdingdownthe set key
longerthan 2 seconds.
·Usingthe AudionetMetalRemoteControl RC 1 or RC 2,selectan
inputchannelbyusingthekeys CH+ and CH- toswitchtothe next
orpreviousinputchannelwithoutusingthe Select Input function
(see section 'Key assignmentPRE1 G3'on page 36).
·Ifthe currentlydisplayed inputchannelisdedicated tothe By-Pass
mode, thisisindicated bya '*'in the upperrightcornerofthe display:

6.9Muting
Note
·The mutingfunction isonlyavailablethroughtheAudionetMetal
Remote Control RC 1 or RC2.
Press keyofthe AudionetMetalRemoteControl RC 1 or RC 2 to
mute orun-mute yourPRE1 G3.
Justaswellasthe inputselection, the PRE1 G3uses'soft'muting,i.e.
volumeisstepped downgentlyto-80 dB,then the outputsareswitched
off.The displayinformsthe userofamuted unitwiththe text MUTE in
the 2nd line. Even if thedimlevelissetto Off, the textisdisplayed.
Toun-mutethe PRE1 G3press keyagain. Hereaswell,thevolume
isstepped up gentlytoitsoriginallevelafterswitchingon theoutputs.
Note
·Whilethe unit ismuted, you mayofcourseselectadifferentinput
