MotionJEG,orMJEG,isadigitalvideosequencethatismadeupofaseriesofindividualJEGimages.Theseimagesarethen
displayedandupdatedataratesufcienttocreateastreamthatshowsconstantlyupdatedmotion.Fortheviewertoperceivemotion
videotheratemustbeatleast16imageframespersecond.Fullmotionvideoisperceivedat30(NTSC)or25(AL)framespersecond.
TheMotionJEGstreamusesconsiderableamountsofbandwidth,butprovidesexcellentimagequalityandaccesstoeveryimage
containedinthestream.

H.264isalicensedtechnology.TheAxisproductincludesoneH.264viewingclientlicense.Toinstalladditionalunlicensed
copiesoftheclientisprohibited.Topurchaseadditionallicenses,contactyourAxisreseller.
H.264can,withoutcompromisingimagequality,reducethesizeofadigitalvideolebymorethan80%comparedtotheMotion
JEGformatandbyasmuchas50%comparedtoolderMEGformats.Thismeansthatlessnetworkbandwidthandstoragespace
arerequiredforavideole.Orseenanotherway,highervideoqualitycanbeachievedforagivenbitrate.

TheImagetabcontainscamerasettingsthataffectallvideostreamsfromtheproduct.Ifyouchangesomethinginthistab,it
immediatelyaffectsallvideostreamsandrecordings.
TheStreamtabcontainssettingsforvideostreams.Yougetthesesettingsifyourequestavideostreamfromtheproductanddon’t
specifyforexampleresolution,orframerate.WhenyouchangethesettingsintheStreamtab,itdoesn’taffectongoingstreams,but
itwilltakeeffectwhenyoustartanewstream.

Bitratecontrol
Bitratecontrolhelpsyoutomanagethebandwidthconsumptionofyourvideostream.
Variablebitrate(VBR)
Variablebitrateallowsthebandwidthconsumptiontovarydependingonthelevelofactivityinthescene.Themoreactivity,
themorebandwidthyouneed.Withvariablebitrateyouareguaranteedconstantimagequality,butyouneedtomakesure
youhavestoragemargins.
Maximumbitrate(MBR)
Maximumbitrateletsyousetatargetbitratetohandlebitratelimitationsinyoursystem.Youmightseeadeclineinimagequalityor
framerateastheinstantaneousbitrateiskeptbelowthespeciedtargetbitrate.Youcanchoosetoprioritizeeitherimagequality
orframerate.Werecommendthatyoucongurethetargetbitratetoahighervaluethantheexpectedbitrate.Thisgivesyoua
marginincasethereisahighlevelofactivityinthescene.
