•Can be mounted with included clamps on any work surface up to 21/2" thick.
Suction cups on bottom provide added stability and minimize marring of the work
surface.
•16" Vise Jaws open up to 51/4" wide. Included Metal Vise Jaw Covers can be used
to protect the vise jaws when gripping objects with shapes or edges that could
damage the jaws.
•Swivel Grips hold irregular shapes and lumber up to 121/2" wide, up to 14"
diagonally.
•Surface can be tilted to 15°, 30° or 45° for use in craft or hobby work.
•V-grooves in vise jaws hold pipe or tubing in horizontal or vertical positions.
•Can be hung on wall or stored under workbench when not in use.
Please read this manual carefully so that you can take full advantage of the versatility
of the WORKMATE®.

ASSEMBLY (Figure 1)
1. Push Handle Grips into Handle Arms
until they snap into position.
2. Push Swivel Grips into any 4 holes in
WORKMATE top.

BENCH MOUNTING
The WORKMATE may be clamped at
any location along the front, or at either
corner, of any work surface up to 21/2"
thick (Figure 2). The two Clamps pro-
vided may be loosened to remove the
WORKMATE® for storage.

Assemble the Clamps through larger holes
in the Base as shown in Figure 3. Tighten
wing nuts firmly.
If you want to permanently mount the
WORKMATE@ to your work surface, use
12 Wood Screws 2" long or 1/4" Bolts
through the smaller holes (Figure 2) in
each corner of the WORKMATE®.

SAFETY RULES
1. Do not load the WORKMATE® with more than 350 pounds
when top surface is horizontal. Do not exceed 40 pounds
when surface is tilted.
2. Do not apply an unbalanced load which could cause the
WORKMATE® to tip.
3. Do not use the WORKMATE® as a stepladder or standing
platform.
4. Avoid applying excessive force when clamping vise jaws.
5. Be sure WORKMATE® is securely clamped to work surface.
Keep Wing Screws tight, except when adjusting tilt angle.
6. Do not store the WORKMATE® outdoors or in damp areas.
7. When using the WORKMATE® with the top tilted, be sure
that Wing Screws are tightened securely in one of the three
available detented positions. (See Figure 17).
8. WHEN USING THE WORKMATE ® WITH POWER TOOLS:
a) Use only the methods described in this manual for mount-
ing power tools. Never mount power tools directly in the
vise jaws; pressure may damage tool.
b) Wear safety glasses or other eye protection when using
power tools.
c) Follow safety rules in the power tool's owners manual.
9. Never hold an open flame or hot object near the top, base, or
other plastic parts of the WORKMATE®. High temperatures
can damage these materials. Also when performing opera-
tions such as soldering, remember that heat can travel
rapidly through the metal to the WORKMATE®. The use of
the included Metal Vise Jaw Covers is recommended for
such operations.
METAL VISE JAW COVERS:
The removeable Metal Vise Jaw
Covers installed on your Work
Center at the factory are for the pro-
tection of your vise jaws when
clamping objects which may
damage them. To remove these pro-
tective covers, place a screwdriver
against the rear edge as shown in
figure 3A and tap with a hammer as
shown. The covers fit tightly. so you
may have to strike them quite hard.
They can be replaced any time they
may be needed.

WORKING with the WORKMATE
The prime feature of the WORKMATE is its ability to hold a great variety of differently
shaped pieces in a secure, convenient working position. Both hands remain free to
hold tools properly and safely.
The two handles adjust the vise jaws to a maximum 51/4" jaw opening. Because each
handle operates independently, the opening can be tapered from 0" to 4". This allows
you to hold tapered work pieces (Figure 4).
Avoid applying excessive force when tightening the vise jaws. An even pressure is
important. Tighten both vise handles so that they exert approximately equal pressure
on the work.

Using the Swivel Grips can increase the
capacity of the vise to 121/2" wide (Figure
5). When the work is held diagonally, the
capacity becomes 14" (Figure 6). Curved
and Irregular shapes can also be held by
the Swivel Grips (Figure 7 oval and ir-
regular).

Sawing tubular pieces is easy when they
are held horizontally in the V-Grooves
running along the faces Of the vise jaws
(Figure 8). Remove metal jaw covers and
vertical V-Grooves in the jaws permit
tubular pieces to be held vertically
(Figure 9).
Amitre box can be held between the
Swivel Grips for accurate angle sawing.
(Figure 10).

USING STATIONARY POWER
TOOLS and POWER TOOL
STANDS
Construct individual mounting boards for
the above equipment, which can be
moved on or off of the Workmate as
required.
CAUTION: The equipment should be se-
curely attached to a mounting board with
screws or bolts. Wear safety glasses when
using power equipment with the Work-
mate.
POWER TOOL MOUNTING BOARDS—
Equipment such as a 5" Bench Grinder or
aDrill Stand should be screwed down to
asuitably sized board or piece of ply-
wood, which has a block about 6" long
attached to the underside. The block
when gripped securely in the Workmate
vise jaws holds the power equipment in
operating position. A suggested mounting
board assembly is shown in Figure 11.
Figures 12, 13 and 14 illustrate three
power tool set-ups.

TILTING the WORK SURFACE
The top of the WORKMATE® may be
tilted to 15°, 30 ' or 45° for use in craft
or hobby work such as wood burning
(Figure 15), carving linoleum blocks, etc.
To tilt the WORKMATE* top:

1. Clamp the WORKMATE* to the bench
with the vise handles at the back of
the WORKMATE® (facing the back of
the work bench) (Figure 16).
2. Loosen the Wing Screws on both sides
of the WORKMATE®.

3. Tilt the top so that the inside ends of
the Wing Screws will fully seat in one
of the three optional angular, detent
positions (Figure 17).
4. Retighten Screws firmly.
CAUTION: Do not load the WORKMATE"
with more than 40 pounds when it is in a
tilted position.
To use the WORKMATE® as adrawing-
board support (Figure 18), fasten a strip
of wood about 11/2" or 13/4" thick and
about 16" long to one of the smaller
sized standard drawing-boards. This strip
should be centered on the horizontal cen-
terline of the back of the board. Place
this strip between the vise jaws and
tighten the handles.

CLEANING
Use only soap and water to clean the
WORKMATE. Dry metal parts thor-
oughly.

STORAGE
Bench Clamps can be stored in the base by lifting the edge
of each rubber cup and pushing the clamp into its storage
slot (Figure 19).
The WORKMATE® will stand on its back or on either side
for shelf or cabinet storage.
Akeyhole slot in the base of the WORKMATE® permits
hanging it on a sturdy nail or screw driven into a sub-
stantial wall or support.
ACCESSORIES The accessories listed in this manual
are available at extra cost from your local dealer, Black &
Decker Service Center, or by writing to: Customer Services.

WORKMATE Attachments (available at extra cost)
Cat. No. 79-010 Pkg. of 2 Swivel Pegs (Figure 21). For additional
versatility in holding objects, or for replacing pegs.
Cat. No. 79-016 CLAMPS. See Figure 22. Quickly clamps parts on
ahorizontal surface for gluing, sawing, sanding, etc. Fits into holes
on WORKMATE® or any other work surface with 20mm hole.
Clamps material up to 33/4" thick, can be rotated 3600. Does not
mar work surface.
Cat. No. 79-013 ROUTER AND SHAPE GUIDE. See Figure 23. Use
with all B&D Routers or any other consumer type Router with a 6"
or less diameter base plate and 3 equally spaced mounting screws
not larger than 3/16" diameter. Holds Router rigidly, work is guided
by fence. Use for routing edges, beading, free-hand routing, etc.
Maximum wood thickness 113", maximum diameter of cutter 1".
Cat. No. 79-015 DRILL GUIDE. Holds Black & Decker and most
other drills securely for vertical or 0° to 90° angular drilling. Use
freehand for accurate angles, or horizontally in WORKMATE® to
hold drill for buffing, sanding jobs.
CAUTION: Recommended accessories and attachments for your
WORKMATE.® are listed above or described elsewhere in this
manual. The use of any other accessory or attachment might be ,
hazardous.
IMPORTANT
To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY repairs, maintenance and adjustment
should be performed by BLACK & DECKER Service Centers or other qualified service
organizations, always using BLACK & DECKER replacement parts.
HOME USE WARRANTY (A Full One Year Warranty)
Black & Decker warrants this product for one year. We will repair, without charge, any
defect due to faulty material or workmanship, or at our option, replace the product
free. Please return the complete unit, transportation prepaid, to any Black & Decker
Service Center or Authorized Service Station listed under "Tools Electric" in the yellow
pages. This warranty does not apply to accessories. This warranty gives you specific
legal rights and you may have other rights which vary from state to state. Should you
have any questions, contact your nearest Black & Decker Service Center Manager.
