I. Product Overview
The Canon U.S.A. Inc. (hereafter referred to as Canon USA) line of 5-color printers
is expanded with the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 36-inch large format
printers. These printers provide enhancements in both software and hardware
capabilities. Both printers accommodate large capacity ink tanks and include sub-
ink-tank systems, allowing users to replace empty ink tanks on-the-fly, without
having to stop the print job. For increased productivity, the iPF785 printer has a
built-in secure 320GB hard drive allowing for enhanced file processing, personal
mailbox space, and job storage of up to 500 print jobs.
The imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printers ship with the following capabilities.

II. Design Features
A. Direct Print and Share
Direct Print and Share is a Canon cloud-based portal solution that helps users
expand their printing workflow.
•Users can upload documents to their own cloud account using any
WebDAV compliant cloud service.
•Share or print PDFs, TIFFs, JPEGs, and HP-GL/2 files, with the ability to
do batch printing.
•Set up and configure multiple customized “Hot Folders” on the desktop, for
drag and drop printing.
B. imagePROGRAF Print Utility
imagePROGRAF Print Utility is Canon’s mobile app for wireless printing via
an Apple iPad to an imagePROGRAF printer.
•Allows users to review PDF files
•Utilizes basic printer driver settings including number of copies,
orientation, and quality
•Allows the end-user to print to an imagePROGRAF 5-color printer sharing
the same network
•Available for free download through the iTunes App Store
C. Status Monitor
The enhanced imagePROGRAF Status Monitor (Version 25.51) allows for
easy ink replenishment.
•Ink purchase notification function prompts users to reorder ink tanks that
are running low.
•Provides link to website for ink tank purchases
•Provides contact information for a trusted retailer
•Monitored events are user-selectable
D. Accounting Manager
Accounting Manager tracks how much ink and media is being consumed
when printing.
•Allows assignment of ink and paper costs to determine “Cost of goods”
•Allows addition of variable costs to total print job cost

E. Print Plug-In for Microsoft Office
The plug-in bypasses the printer driver to simplify the printing process.
•Easy printing of large-format documents created in Microsoft Word, Excel,
or PowerPoint
•Appears in the Microsoft application tool bar
•Can be configured to print 8.5" x 11" office documents in poster size
F. Dye/Pigment Reactive Ink Set
The 5-Color LUCIA ink set is ideal for technical applications.
•Improves adhesion to media; provides enhanced scratch and marker
resistance; ensures minimal "bleeding" between colors and text
•Utilizes four highly colorfast dye inks
•Newly formulated magenta ink helps produce a wider color gamut in the
red and orange spectrums, compared to previous models.
•Produces crisp, legible small text when printing on colored backgrounds,
or on uncoated technical papers
G. High Speed Printing
Powering the imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer is Canon's L-COA (Large
Format Printer Common Architecture) print controller.
•Drives the print engine to lay down ink with speed and precision
•Process large volumes of data
•Optimizes readability and color accuracy of complex high-color GIS
images, and architectural renderings
H. 320GB Internal Hard Disk Drive (imagePROGRAF iPF785 only)
The imagePROGRAF iPF785 printer’s internal 320GB hard drive
accommodates workgroups that need to print large files or large sets of files.
•32GB dedicated to file processing memory
•Easily reprint saved jobs
•Simplifies printing workflow
•Stores and processes large complex files such as 3D and GIS drawings
•Provides advanced error recovery
•Track file and printing information for up to 500 jobs
I. Large Capacity Ink Tanks
The imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer supports ink tank sizes of 130ml
and 300ml, with the latter helping to lower the ink cost per print. Tanks may
be interchanged based on user preference.
J. Sub-Ink Tank System
Canon's unique sub-ink tank system allows users to replace empty ink tanks
on the fly without stopping the printer. This is extremely useful during long
print jobs.

K. Economy Print Mode
The imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer reduces total ink consumption by
utilizing the Economy Print Mode for producing draft prints on select media.
This feature regulates the use of all inks to produce quick check plots while
minimizing the cost per print.
L. Flat Stacker/Basket
The integrated stacker basket provides the capability to neatly stack up to
twenty 24-inch x 36-inch plain paper prints. The basket can be configured as
a regular basket, a small stacker, or a larger flat-positioned basket.
M. High Density PF-04 Printhead
The PF-04 print head incorporates a nozzle orifice shape to reduce satellite
ink, producing cleaner lines and text and minimizing mist. The high-precision,
high-density print head, with a total of 15,360 nozzles, produces sharp detail
and excellent image quality.
N. PosterArtist Lite
Canon's bundled PosterArtist Lite poster creation software allows users to
create professional large format prints quickly and easily.
•Create posters for Office Presentation, Trade Shows, Retail Signage and
more, in four (4) easy steps
•QuickCopy feature allows a CanoScan desktop scanner to be used as a
copier, turning letter-size flyers and documents into full-size posters with
the touch of a button
•Web-link feature links users directly to the PosterArtist website for useful
hints, tips, and free content
For those with more demanding poster creation needs, Canon's optional
PosterArtist (full version) offers advanced features such as Auto Design,
Variable Data, and in-application image editing features, as well as additional
templates, royalty-free photos, and clip art.

IV. Dealer Sales/Service Authorization
To become authorized and maintain authorization to service an imagePROGRAF
iPF785/780 printer, each Dealer location must have at least two (2) technicians
that have completed the imagePROGRAF iPF750/755/650/655 online training
course.

V. Educational Training
A. imagePROGRAF Printer Training
Technicians who have successfully completed the imagePROGRAF
iPF750/755/650/655 Series Printer Hardware eLearning Course will be
automatically certified to service and support the imagePROGRAF
iPF785/780 printer.
New technicians must complete the Large Format Printer Core Technologies
and Advanced Operations online training course. Additionally, the learning
path concludes with the imagePROGRAF iPF750/755/760/765 online course.
Upon successful completion of the imagePROGRAF iPF750/755/760/765
online course, imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 certification will be granted.

This training program is a comprehensive learning program, which will
prepare the service technician to setup and service the imagePROGRAF
iPF785/780 printers. The online training course modules are available on

C. Who Should Apply
It is highly recommended that any technician responsible for installing,
servicing, or supporting the imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printers
successfully complete the required training courses and pass the final
assessment exams.
Note: Our current support policy dictates that only those technicians who
have completed the training program and pass the final assessment exam are
entitled to live, phone-based support through our TSC (Technical Support
Center). However, self-service support (software downloads, knowledgebase
articles, support forums, technical publications) is available through our
e-Support Center Web site for all technicians. (Refer to the Technical Support
section on the e-Support Center Web site for entitlement details.)
D. Online Training Course
The online course is located in the e-Learning center on Canon USA’s e-
Support Center Web site: http://www.support.cusa.canon.com.Certification
maps on the e-Support Web site provide easy access to the training. The
online courses can be conducted at any dealer facility that is suitable for
online student learning.

applied, will help reduce service costs and maintain uptime. Refer to the

Canon USA Inc. strongly suggests dedicated and properly grounded outlets
be provided for these imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer devices.
•The imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer requires a dedicated single-
phase 120V/15A NEMA 5-15 receptacle for proper operation.

IMPORTANT
•We recommend an additional standard 120V/15A outlet for service tools,
such as a laptop computer or vacuum that may be used when servicing
or configuring the printer.
•Use only dedicated and properly grounded outlets for the
imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer main unit. It is also strongly
suggested to use dedicated and properly grounded outlets for each
optional accessory. Do not use extension cords. The ground connection
serves to provide the internal electronics with a reference voltage. Faulty
or poor ground sources will cause this reference voltage to fall into a
range that no longer serves as a reliable reference voltage. The internal
logic and programming of the imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printers will
not perform reliably because there is an insufficient difference between
the internal operating signal voltages and the poor ground reference
signal. A qualified electrician can measure and provide the ground
source that the imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printers or any computer
controlled office equipment requires.
•Before installation, confirm that all necessary receptacles are available.
•Phase converters and step down transformers are not supported

F. Installation Space Requirements
The imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer’s approximate installation space
requirements may differ, depending on how the printer is configured and the
optional accessories attached. Always ensure that there is enough space for
service and operation of the device.
Refer to the imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 Series Service Manual for details
on transportation and installation of the imagePROGRAF iPF785/780 printer.
IMPORTANT
•Make sure that approximately 24" (600 mm) of space is left around the
front, 0.4" (10mm) is left at the back, and a minimum of approximately 8"
(200 mm) of space is left around the left, and right sides of the printer for
the proper servicing of the equipment.
•The floor must be level (with no bows) and flat for the stabilization and
support of the printer.
•The weight of the printer is primarily supported by the wheels.
•Elevators used to transport the printer must have a minimum depth of
approximately 62" (1,575mm). Additional room may be needed to
navigate turns.
•The printer should never be tilted until a “move” operation has been
performed. Refer to the Service Manual for specific details.

G. Estimated Installation Times
Estimated installation times shown are the length of time needed to unpack
and install the main unit. The estimated unpacking and installation times are
based on two experienced technicians. Canon USA recommends that service
personnel perform the installation, with four (4) or more persons to unpack
and move the printer, and two (2) or more persons to install it.
Included in the calculation of the estimated installation time are the following:
•Installation space preparation
•Unpacking and positioning the printer (main unit) on a stand or table
•Installing the Printhead, ink tanks, and connecting the power cable
•Checking the printer operation and adjusting the printing position

J. Consumables (Main Unit)
Consumables are all products and materials which are consumed with regular
use and cannot be reused. Such consumables include but are not limited to
paper, chemicals and toner.
