Exif Print
This machine supports Exif Print.
Exif Print is a standard for enhancing the communication between digital cameras and
printers. By connecting to an Exif Print-compliant digital camera, the camera’s image
data at the time of shooting is used and optimized, yielding extremely high quality
prints.
International ENERGY STAR®Program
As an ENERGY STAR®Partner, Canon Inc. has determined that this
product meets the ENERGY STAR guidelines for efficiency.
Power Requirements
Be sure to use the power cable included with the machine.
Never use a power supply voltage other than that supplied in the country of purchase.
Using the incorrect voltage could cause a fire or electric shock. The correct power
supply voltages and frequencies are as follows:

About Consumables
Consumables (ink tanks / FINE Cartridges) are available for 5 years after production
has stopped.
Super G3 is a phrase used to describe the new generation of fax
machines that use ITU-T V.34 standard 33.6 Kbps*modems.
Super G3 High Speed Fax machines allow transmission time of
approximately 3 seconds*per page which results in reduced
telephone line charges.
*Approximately 3 seconds per page fax transmission time based on Canon FAX
Standard Chart (Standard Mode) at 33.6 Kbps modem speed.
The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) currently supports 28.8 Kbps modem
speeds or lower, depending on telephone line conditions.

4Preparing the Machine
Preparing the Machine
Be sure to read your setup sheet first for setting up your machine and getting it ready for use.
Unpack the machine
Please confirm the included items against the illustration printed on the lid of the packing box.
1Connect the telephone line and the power cord.
Be sure to use the bundled telephone line cable.
If you connect the telephone line, see “Preparing the Machine for Fax” on page 32.
Remove the Telephone connector cap to connect the external device.
Users in the UK
If the connector of the external device cannot be connected to the jack on the machine,
you will need to purchase a B.T. adapter to connect as follows:
Connect the external device line to the B.T. adapter, then connect the B.T. adapter to the
jack.
2Turn on the machine.
3Install the Print Head.
Caution
zSince this machine weighs approximately 36.6 lbs. (16.6 kg), it is recommended that two people move
or relocate the machine. For details on transporting the machine, refer to “Transporting the Machine” in
the User’s Guide on-screen manual.
zBe sure to remove the tapes and protective material before you turn on the machine.
Important
A USB cable is necessary to connect the machine with your computer.

zThe tape or the protective material position is subject to change.
Installing cleaning sheets
zCleaning sheets can be stored in the Cleaning Sheet Holder. For details on installing cleaning
sheets, refer to “Cleaning the Inside of the Machine (Sheet Cleaning)” in the User’s Guide on-
screen manual.
Note
zIf an unintended language is displayed on the LCD, press the Back button to return to the
Language selection screen.
zThe country selection is only available for some countries.
Caution
Do not touch internal parts other than the Print Head Lock Lever.
Important
zIf you could not install the Print Head properly, lift the Print Head Lock Lever, remove it, and then
install it again properly.
zDo not reattach the protective cap once it has been removed.
Note
There might be some transparent or light blue ink on the inside of the bag the Print Head comes in,
or the inside of the protective cap - this has no effect on print quality. Be careful not to get ink on
yourself when handling these items.

4Install the ink tanks.
5Install the clear ink tank.
6Load printing paper.
In the following process, you will be required to perform the Print Head Alignment, and you
will need four sheets of plain paper loaded in the Cassette.
Important
zMake sure that all the ink tanks are installed in the correct position, matching the label. The
machine cannot be used unless all the ink tanks are installed.
zIf the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) is left open for more than 10 minutes, the Print Head Holder
moves to the right side. Close and reopen the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) to return the holder
to the center.
zDo not squeeze the side of ink tanks as this may cause the ink to leak out and stain your clothes
and hands.
zDo not reattach the protective cap once you have removed it.
Important
Wait for about 2 minutes, until the machine has stopped making operating noises, before
proceeding.
Note
zClear ink is used only when printing on plain paper. By coating the surface of plain paper with
clear ink before actual printing begins, the clear ink coating prevents absorption of other inks to
enhance colors.
zBe sure to pull the orange tape as shown in step 3 of your setup sheet to remove the protective
film.
zAn error message will be displayed on the LCD if an ink tank is not installed properly. Open the
Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) and make sure that position of all the ink tanks match the label.
Important
zDo not place any objects in front of the machine.
zAlways load paper in portrait orientation. Loading paper in landscape orientation can cause the
paper to be jammed.
Notes on the Print Head Alignment
zPrint Head Alignment will take about 9 minutes to complete. Do not open the Scanning Unit
(Printer Cover) while printing.
zIf the pattern is not printed successfully and some error messages appear on the LCD, press
the OK button to clear the error, go ahead to the next procedure to install the MP Drivers and
on-screen manuals, then refer to “An Error Message Is Displayed on the LCD” in the User’s
Guide on-screen manual.

6Preparing the Machine
For fax users
Select the receive mode according to your needs. See “Selecting a Receive Mode” on page 40.
zWhen you receive mainly faxes and sometimes voice calls:
Select FAX priority mode.
zWhen you have a dedicated telephone line for fax use only:
Select FAX only mode.
zWhen you receive mainly voice calls and sometimes faxes:
Select TEL priority mode.
zWhen you subscribe to a ring pattern detection service provided by your telephone company, and
you want to receive a fax only if the machine detects the pattern for fax:
Select DRPD*1 or Network switch*2.
*1 This setting is only available in US and Canada.
*2 This setting may not be available depending on the country or region of purchase.
Selecting the Language for the LCD
1Press the COPY button, wait for about 5 seconds, then press the Menu button.
2Press the ]button twice to select , then press the OK button.
3Press the ]button once to select , then press the OK button.
4Press the }button five times, then press the OK button.
5Press the {or }button to select the language for the LCD, then press the OK
button.
Note
To receive a fax, you need to set the telephone line type setting properly on the machine. For details on
how to confirm and change this setting, refer to the User’s Guide on-screen manual.
If you are unsure of your telephone line type, contact your telephone company.

7Installing the MP Drivers
Installing the MP Drivers
The following information is for using the machine with USB connection.
If you use the machine over wired LAN, refer to the Network Setup Guide.
Information Common to Windows and Macintosh®
Notes on the Installation Process
zQuit all running applications before installation.
zIf the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.
zIf the Select Your Place of Residence screen appears, select your place of residence, then
click Next.
zThere are two ways of installing the MP Drivers and other software*:
Easy Install: the items included on the Setup CD-ROM are installed automatically
Custom Install: you can select particular items to install
* The available software programs included on the Setup CD-ROM may vary depending on
the country or region of purchase.
zWhen the User Registration screen appears, click Next. If your computer is connected to the
Internet, the on-screen instructions to register your product will appear.
To register your product, you need the serial number inside of the machine.
Registration can also be performed from the icon on the desktop after installation is
completed.
The User Registration screen will only be displayed when Europe, Middle East, Africa is
selected on the Select Your Place of Residence screen.
zRemove the Setup CD-ROM after installation is complete, then keep it in a safe place in case
you need to reinstall the software.
Information for Windows
zDepending on the country or region of purchase, the following two CD-ROMs are included in
the package for the Windows setup.
– Windows (CD-1)
– Windows (CD-2) Macintosh
In this case, insert the Setup CD-ROM “Windows (CD-1)” first to start the installation, and
follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
zLog into a user account with the administrator privilege.
zDo not switch users during the installation process.
zIf the Found New Hardware or Found New Hardware
Wizard screen appears automatically, remove the USB
cable connected to your computer. Click Cancel to quit
the screen. In Windows Vista, the screen may close
automatically when the USB cable is unplugged. Then
turn off the machine and start the installation process
again. For details on the installation process, refer to your
setup sheet.
zIf installation does not start automatically when the Setup
CD-ROM is inserted into your computer’s disc drive, click
Start then Computer. (In Windows XP, click Start then
My Computer. In Windows 2000, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.) And
double-click the CD-ROM icon on the displayed window. If the contents of the CD-ROM are
displayed, double-click MSETUP4.EXE.

8Installing the MP Drivers
zIf the AutoPlay screen appears, click Run Msetup4.exe. In Windows XP and Windows 2000,
this screen will not appear.
zIf the User Account Control screen appears, click Continue. In Windows XP and Windows
2000, this screen will not appear.
zA message asking for your confirmation to restart your computer may appear during the
installation process. If this message is displayed, follow the on-screen instructions and click
OK.
The installation resumes from where it left off when your computer has been restarted. While
restarting, do not remove the Setup CD-ROM.
zWe would appreciate it if you would take part in the PIXMA Extended Survey Program
regarding the use of Canon printers. For details, refer to the on-screen instructions. If Do not
agree is clicked, the PIXMA Extended Survey Program will not be installed but you can use
the machine normally.
zThe Setup CD-ROM will be ejected automatically after installation is complete. If it is not
ejected, remove it manually.
zIf the connection is not recognized, click Cancel to quit the Printer Connection screen, then
follow the on-screen instructions. When the Easy Install screen appears, click Back and then
click Exit to cancel installation. Next turn off the machine and restart your computer. Then
follow the instructions in your setup sheet to install the MP Drivers.
Users in Asia
zScan Soft OmniPage SE can be installed only on an English operating system.
Solution Menu
zThis menu screen helps you to easily launch bundled applications or on-screen manuals.
Also, you can easily access useful websites to get tips on how to use your machine.
Experience how easy it is to launch menu items by using the menu screen that appears
automatically when your computer starts up.
For details, refer to the Introduction to Solution Menu on-screen manual.
My Printer
zThis application helps you to operate this machine.
Use this application to open the printer driver or the status monitor screen and confirm or
change both the machine settings and status.
Also, this application has a menu to provide troubleshooting tips when problems arise.
Double-click the icon on the desktop and experience how easy operating the machine can be.

9Installing the MP Drivers
Information for Macintosh
zSince Mac OS 9, Mac OS X Classic environments, or Mac OS X v.10.3.8 or earlier are not
supported, do not connect the machine to these.
zLog on as an Administrator.
zIf installation does not start automatically when the Setup CD-ROM is inserted into your
computer’s disc drive, double-click the CD-ROM icon on your desktop.
zXXX FAX (where “XXX” is your machine’s name) is shown in the Printer Name list (Product
list in Mac OS X v.10.3.9), but you cannot add XXX FAX. You cannot send faxes from your
computer via the machine.
When using Mac OS X v.10.3.9:
zBefore using the Operation Panel on the machine to save scanned originals to the computer,
it is necessary to select MP Navigator EX as the launch application on Image Capture under
Applications. For details, refer to “Scanning Images” in the User’s Guide on-screen manual.
zRestarting the computer while connected to the machine may cause the machine not to be
detected. To resolve this, either unplug the USB cable then plug it back in again, or turn the
machine off then back on again.
Users in Asia
zTo view the User’s Guide on-screen manual in a language other than the installed one,
double-click the Manual folder in the Setup CD-ROM, Canon folder, and then copy a
language folder to your hard disk.

Reading the On-screen Manuals
For detailed instructions on installing the on-screen manuals, refer to your setup sheet or the
Network Setup Guide.
You can view the on-screen manuals in the following way:
To view the on-screen manual, double-click the XXX On-screen Manual shortcut icon on the
desktop, or click Start > All Programs (or Programs) > Canon XXX Manual > XXX On-screen
Manual (where “XXX” is your machine’s name).
System Requirements
Browser: Windows HTML Help Viewer
To view the on-screen manual, double-click the XXX On-screen Manual alias (where “XXX” is your
machine’s name) on the desktop.

zMicrosoft®Internet Explorer 5.0 or later must be installed.
zThe on-screen manual may not be displayed properly depending on your operating system or

If you installed the User’s Guide from the Manual folder in the Setup CD-ROM, open the folder in which
you copied the User’s Guide and double-click top.htm.

manuals. If Safari is not installed on your computer, download it from Apple Inc. website and

11Loading Paper
Loading Paper
Load photo paper, or any type of paper other than plain paper, in the Rear Tray. When any media
type other than plain paper is selected for printing, paper is automatically fed from the Rear Tray.
Load plain paper in the Cassette. When plain paper is selected for printing, paper is automatically
fed from the Cassette.
Loading Paper in the Rear Tray
1Open the Rear Tray Cover, then pull out the
Paper Support.
2Open the Paper Output Tray.
3Open the Output Tray Extension.
4Load the paper in the Rear Tray with the print
side facing UP.
Do not load higher than the Load Limit Mark (A).
5Align the paper stack against the Cover
Guide on the right side of the Rear Tray
Cover.
6Pinch the Paper Guide and slide it against
the left side of the paper stack.
Do not slide the Paper Guide too hard. The paper
may not be fed properly.
Important
zTo print out received faxes, the machine uses plain paper loaded in the Cassette.
zAlways load paper in portrait orientation. Loading paper in landscape orientation can cause the paper
to be jammed.
Note
If you cut plain paper to 4" x 6" / 101.6 x 152.4 mm, 5" x 7" / 127.0 x 177.8 mm, or 2.13" x 3.39" / 54.0 x
86.0 mm (credit card-size) and feed it from the Rear Tray for a trial print, it can cause paper jams.

12 Loading Paper
Loading Paper in the Cassette
1Pull out the Cassette from the machine.
2Load the paper in the Cassette, aligning the
paper stack against the right side of the
Cassette.
Do not load higher than the Load Limit Mark (A).
3Slide the Paper Guides (B) to fit to the loaded
paper stack.
4Insert the Cassette into the machine.
Push the Cassette all the way into the machine.
5Press the Open button (C) to open the Paper
Output Tray (D), and open the Output Tray
Extension (E).
Important
When loading Legal-sized paper, pull the tab towards
you to unlock and fully extend the Cassette.
Important
If Legal-sized paper is loaded in the Cassette, the
Cassette will protrude slightly.

Operation Panel
(1) ON/OFF button
Turns the machine on and off. Before turning on the machine, make sure the Document
Cover is closed.
(2) COPY button
Switches the machine to copy mode. Flashes when you turn on the machine.
(3) FAX button
Switches the machine to fax mode.
(4) SCAN button
Switches the machine to scan mode. In scan mode, the machine scans a document to
your computer according to the settings selected. To use this button, the machine must
be connected to a computer. For details, refer to the Scanning Guide on-screen manual.
(5) MEMORY CARD button
Switches the machine to memory card mode.
(6) In Use/Memory lamp
Flashes when sending or receiving faxes, and lights when there are documents stored in
the machine’s memory.
(7) Alarm lamp
Lights or flashes orange when an error, such as paper-out or ink-out, occurs.
(8) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
Displays messages, menu selections, and the operational status.
(9) Menu button
Displays the menu screen.
(10) Settings button
Configures the page size, media type, and image correction settings.
(11) Numeric buttons
Enter numerical values such as the number of copies, as well as fax/telephone numbers
and characters.

zThe machine cannot receive faxes when the power is turned off.
zThe power cannot be turned off while the machine is sending or receiving a fax, or when
there are unsent faxes stored in the machine’s memory.

14 Operation Panel
(12) Redial/Pause button
Redials the last number called using the Numeric buttons. Also enters pauses between
or after numbers when dialing or registering numbers.
(13) Coded Dial button
Press this button and a two-digit code to display a pre-registered fax/telephone number
or group.
(14) Stop/Reset button
Cancels operations such as copying, scanning, or faxing, or a print job in progress.
(15) Black button (top) / Color button (bottom)
Press the Black button to start black & white copying, scanning, or faxing.
Press the Color button to start color copying, photo printing, scanning, or faxing.
(16) Hook button
Connects or disconnects the telephone line.
(17) Tone button
Switches temporarily to tone dialing. Also changes the input mode when entering
characters.
(18) Trimming button
Specifies the cropping area of the displayed photo.
(19) {}[]buttons
Scrolls through menu selections and increases/decreases setting values, such as the
number of copies. You can use these buttons when {, }, [, and ]are displayed on
the LCD. Also, the [button cancels the entered character, and the ]button enters a
space between characters when entering characters.
(20) OK button
Finalizes your selection for the menu or setting item.
This button is also used to dismiss the error message and resume the machine’s normal
operation after resolving a printing error or removing jammed paper, or to eject
documents remaining in the ADF.
(21) Back button
Cancels operations and returns the LCD to the previous screen.
(22) FAX Quality button

Making Copies
This section describes the basic procedure to make copies. For details, refer to “Copying” in the
User’s Guide on-screen manual.
1Turn on the machine.
2Press the COPY button to select the copy mode if another mode has been
selected.
3Load paper.
4Load the original document on the Platen Glass (A) or in the ADF (B).
zWhen loading the original document on the
Platen Glass
(1) Lift the Document Cover.
(2) Load the original document with the side to be
copied facing down on the Platen Glass.
zWhen loading the original document in the
ADF
(1) Open the Document Tray.
(2) Load the original document with the side to be
copied facing up in the ADF.
(3) Adjust the Document Guides to match the
document width.

(1) Use the {or }button or the Numeric buttons
to specify the number of copies.
(2) Use the [or ]button to adjust the intensity.
(3) Confirm the page size, media type, and other
settings.
The paper source will switch to the Cassette
when Media type is set to Plain paper, or to
the Rear Tray when any other type of media is
selected.
To change page size, media type, and other
settings, press the Settings button.
6Press the Color button for color copying, or the Black button for black & white
copying.

Inserting the Memory Card
1Turn on the machine.
2Attach a card adapter if your memory card
requires one.
3Open the Card Slot Cover.
4Insert only one memory card into the Card Slot.

Insert a memory card with the labeled side facing to the right.
*1 Be sure to attach the memory card to the special adapter before inserting it into the Card
Slot.
*2 Use “SD Card Adapter” provided with the card.
Caution
When a memory card is inserted into the Card Slot, the Access lamp (A) is lit. When the Access lamp is
flashing, the machine is accessing to the memory card. In this case, do not touch the area around the
Card Slot.
