1. Safety
Proper safety precautions must be taken when using the CH2 xHVC system, including the use
of safety interlock switches and an Emergency Stop (E-Stop) switch, due to the potential for
electrical shock when performing high voltage testing. Operators must not touch the device
under test, the test fixture / test cables or the output terminals of the Chroma Power Supply or
the CH2 xHVC test points during high voltage testing. Doing so can result in serious injury or
death.
1.1 High Voltage Hazard
Misuse of the CH2 xHVC system or its components
can result in serious injury or death. Proper safety
procedures and safety interlocks must be used to ensure
that operators are protected from high voltage hazards.
1.2 Medical Warning
An individual wearing a cardiac pacemaker, an insulin pump or any electronically
controlled medical device should NOT perform high voltage testing.
During the high voltage test:
Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death.
Read the USERS MANUAL before operating.
• Do NOT touch test xturing or the device under test.
• Ensure a non-conductive test area.
• Use an approved safety interlock system to keep
operators clear.

1.3 Test Station Safety Overview
The following general safety precautions must be observed during operation of the CH2 xHVC test
system. This is NOT an exhaustive list. The user is responsible for developing proper safety procedures
knowing that the potential for electrical shock, injury and even death exists when the system is operating.
Cirris accepts no responsibility for the user’s failure to establish and comply with proper safety procedures.
• Training - Ensure that operators are fully trained before using the equipment and understand:
• The eects of electrical current on the human body.
• That the output current of the equipment will take any available path to ground including
through a person.
• How to determine when the device under test (DUT) and related fixturing is energized.
• To never touch the test equipment, fixturing, cabling or the device under test during testing.
• How to operate the CH2 xHVC test system and the importance of not shortcutting established
work processes.
• How to determine if proper protective equipment is required.
• How to safely release a person who is being shocked.
• Never to let untrained users access the equipment.
• Prepare a Safe Workstation
• Explosive Environment - Do not operate the test system in the presence of flammable gases or
fumes.
• Safety Interlock - A safety interlock MUST be used with the CH2 xHVC system. If using dual
safety palm switches, they should be permanently fixed at least 22” apart.
• Safety Enclosure - Palm Safety Switches aren’t always the best safety devices for use during
long tests as it requires operators to hold switches in the depressed position for extended
periods of time. Consider using a high voltage safety enclosure or a light curtain to protect
operators instead in these situations.
• Power - Before connecting the equipment to power, verify that the Chroma Power Supply is set
to the proper working voltage.
• Grounding - Verify that the protective ground is connected and that the power outlet provides
a properly wired earth ground. The connection to earth ground is provided by the power cord
provided with the system. An additional ground strap can be connected to earth ground from
the CH2 Base Unit if needed.
• Fuses - In the Chroma equipment, never use a replacement fuse that has specifications outside
those of the original.
• Non-Conductive Bench - Only use a non-conductive tabletop surface and table legs for the test
station and make certain no miscellaneous conductive materials are in the test area. NEVER use
an ESD station for high voltage testing.
• High Voltage Mat - Consider using a high voltage insulation mat to isolate the user from ground.
• Isolate the Test Station - Isolate the test station from the normal work flow and processes. The
NEC (National Electric Code) and NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) require an untrained
worker stando distance of ten feet for high voltage in the range produced by the CH2 xHVC
test system. Establish barriers around the test station enforcing this requirement.

• Warning Signs - Mark the test station at the barrier distance with clearly posted signs stating
something similar to:
• Emergency Stop (E-Stop) - An emergency stop button should be located outside, but adjacent
to, the test station barrier to allow someone outside the barrier to hit the E-Stop in the event of
an emergency.
• Require Safety Switch Cycling - Cirris STRONGLY recommends setting the Easy-Wire software
to check that safety switches are cycled from a closed condition during a high voltage test to an
open condition between tests. This will help to detect if operators are defeating the switches by
devising methods to permanently close (enable) them. See page 8, Section 1.5 on Safety
Interlocks for additional information.

1.4 Test System Symbols
Additional schematic symbols are used on the back panel of the Chroma 19052 Power Supply. It will not be
necessary to reference these symbols during set up or operation of the test CH2 xHVC system. More information
can be found in the Chroma User Manual supplied with the CH2 xHVC system.
DANGER - High Voltage
The lightning bolt symbols on the front of the CH2 xHVC Base Unit and on the front and rear
of the Chroma Power Supply inform operators that high voltage may be present and to take
proper safety precautions to avoid the risk of injury or death.
CAUTION
The caution symbols on the front of the front and rear of the Chroma Power Supply inform
users to consult the manual to avoid risk of injury, death or damage to the equipment.
GROUND TERMINAL
The protective ground symbol indicates that the terminal must be connected to ground before
operation of the equipment.
RETURN/LOW GROUND TERMINAL
The Return/Low symbol identifies a terminal on the front of the Chroma Power Supply which
can be used as the return path for the device under test when the unit is used in a stand-
alone configuration. This terminal on the front of the unit will NOT be used in the CH2 xHVC
application.
CHROMA POWER SUPPLY POWER SWITCH
Push - on / Push-o power button on the front panel of the Chroma Power Supply. Power is on
when the button is in the depressed position.

1.5 Safety Interlocks
Safety interlocks are used to help prevent operator injury by reducing the possibility of exposure to hazardous
conditions. Common safety interlocks used in high voltage test stations include palm safety switches, safety light
curtains and non-conductive enclosures with integrated closure switches.
Important Safety Note: As an additional safety measure,
Cirris strongly recommends enabling the Easy-Wire software
option to Require OPEN/CLOSE of HV safety switch for
each hipot test. From the Easy-Wire Main Menu > Utilities
> Setup System Options > Tester Hardware Tab and select
the check box for the option. Enabling this feature ensures
that the safety switches move to an open position between
hipot tests, which acts as an aid to prevent operators
from permanently setting one or both switches in a closed
position and helps to detect safety switches that have
malfunctioned by sticking in a closed position.
The CH2 xHVC Base Unit and the Chroma 19052 Power Supply both include safety interlocks that require a closed
(shorted) state before the units will start, or continue, a high voltage test. The Palm Safety Switches supplied with the
CH2 xHVC system are wired to meet this condition on both units simultaneously. The high voltage safety interlock on
the CH2 xHVC Base Unit is satisfied by closing the connection between pins 6 and 25 in the Digital I/O connector on
the back panel of the unit. The interlock on the Chroma 19052 Power Supply is satisfied by closing the connection
between the two positions labeled INTERLOCK on the 11-position, vertical terminal strip on the back panel of the unit.

1.6 Wiring Safety Interlocks
The basic Palm Safety Switches generally supplied with the CH2 xHVC system are wired as shown in the schematic
below. The palm switches are normally-open, double-contact devices. The switches close when the buttons are
depressed and open when the buttons are released. The system will only start a hipot test if both palm switches are
depressed. If either of the palm switches are released at any time during hipot testing, the high voltage output will be
turned o, all test points will be connected to ground to discharge the Device Under Test (DUT) and the test will be
aborted. The palm safety switches should be permanently fixed at lease 22” apart.
The Emergency Stop (E-Stop) switch is normally closed, opens when depressed and stays open until the button is
manually turned clockwise to return it to a closed (raised) position. The E-Stop button should be placed outside, but
adjacent to, the testing area so that it can be readily accessed by anyone outside the testing area to stop the tester’s
high voltage output in case of emergency. If the E-Stop is depressed during a high voltage test, the high voltage
output will be turned o, all test points will be connected to ground to discharge the DUT and the test will be aborted.
A similar wiring configuration can be used for switches on a safety enclosure to check for closure or on a safety light
curtain.

2. Introduction
This manual is intended as a guide for setting up the CH2 xHVC system, provides basic programming guidance and
important information about the safe operation of the system.
Although they share much in common, the CH2 and CH2 xHVC are separate and distinct test systems. The chief
dierence between the two is that standard CH2 test systems can perform Dielectric Withstand (DW) testing at up
to 1500 VDC or up to 1000 VRMS while CH2 xHVC systems can perform DW testing at higher voltages - up to 2120
VDC or up to 1500 VRMS (the maximum IR voltage remains 1500 VDC). Relays designed to accommodate the higher
voltages are used in the xHVC switching matrix and an external power supply, the Chroma 19052 Guardian Series, is
used to provide the higher DW voltages. The Chroma unit can also supply higher current and provides an extended
leakage current measurement range. It should be noted that the higher voltage and current also present an increased
shock hazard and, therefore, it’s critical to use proper safety procedures when using the system.
While it provides these additional features, the CH2 xHVC is controlled by the same Easy-Wire software that controls
standard CH2 and otherwise provides the same capabilities of a standard CH2 system including compatibility with
options such as Smart-Lights intelligent adapters. Therefore, this manual will provide information unique to the CH2
xHVC system, including instructions for programming high voltage DW tests using the external Chroma Power Supply,
but other resources will also provide valuable information about the system and its operation.

Several supplemental resources providing additional information about the test system are available and will be refer-
enced in this manual. They include:
• Easy-Wire Help - The Easy-Wire software that controls the CH2 xHVC system includes a Help system available
throughout the software that provides contextual assistance.
• Easy-Wire Software Manual for CH2 & CR Testers - This CH2 xHVC User Manual provides information unique
to the CH2 xHVC system, including instructions for programming high voltage Dielectric Withstand (DW) testing
using the external Chroma supply, but the Easy-Wire Software Manual provides more thorough guidance on
use of the Easy-Wire software in general.

that’s valid for one year. The calibration of the Base Unit and Expansion Scanners can be verified using the
instructions in the Performance Verification Manual in conjunction with a CH2 xHVC Performance Check
Kit. The kit includes standards that have been calibrated using instruments with accuracies traceable to the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It should be noted that the Chroma 19052 Guardian
Series Power Supply must be calibrated separately.

2.1 The Chroma Power Supply
The CH2 xHVC is designed to act as a single system. The Chroma Guardian Series 19052 Power Supply has been
integrated as a component of the system and as such it will not be necessary for programmers or operators to
interact directly with the Chroma 19052 except to turn the unit on and o. After the initial set up, no additional
connections will be made directly to the Chroma unit.
All the communication with the Chroma Power Supply, including test instructions sent to the device and measured
data returned from the device, will be managed by the Easy-Wire software using a GPIB interface. Measurement
results will be returned to the Easy-Wire software and are available to include in reports and can be saved in the
Easy-Wire database.
In light of these facts, the function buttons on the Chroma Power Supply have been locked at the factory. However,
should it become necessary to access the unit’s function keys for configuration purposes or when sending the unit for
calibration, the password to unlock the keys is “AAAA.” To access the Key Lock screen, from the Chroma Main Menu,
scroll down using the F2 button to 5. Key Lock and press F3 to Select. Enter the password using the F1 button, press
F3 to Enter and F4 to Exit.
2.2 Calibration
A Certificate of Calibration, valid for one year, would have been supplied with the CH2 xHVC test system. Before
leaving the factory every CH2 tester is calibrated in compliance with ANSI/NCSL Z540-1-1994 and MIL-STD-45662A
to standards traceable to the NIST in the United States. The calibration of the tester should be verified annually at a
minimum.
A CH2 xHVC Performance Verification Kit and a calibrated multimeter capable of measuring both AC and DC voltages
can be used to verify the calibration of the system’s Base Unit and Expansion Scanners. However, the Chroma 19052
Guardian Series Power Supply must be calibrated separately. The Chroma unit can be sent independently to Cirris or
to a certified calibration laboratory for calibration. Contact your Cirris support representative for more information.
Note: If a Cirris tester fails calibration verification, it indicates that the system has a hardware problem which
requires service. No hardware or software adjustments are made during the verification process.
2.3 Tester Maintenance
The CH2 xHVC system, including the Chroma Power Supply, requires no maintenance. Do not use any cleaning
agents on the surfaces of the test system as they may leave a conductive residue. The unit may be dusted, but first
power o the CH2 xHVC Base unit, any Expansion Scanner Enclosures and the Chroma Power Supply and discon-
nect test fixtures and/or test cables and power cords.
2.4 Fixture Maintenance
The fixture contacts that mate to the device-under-test may wear due to repeated insertion cycles. Contact wear can
result in higher connection resistances which increases the measured resistances for the Device Under Test (DUT).
For this reason Cirris recommends that customers evaluate the number of mating cycles and the cycle life of fixture
contacts to determine maintenance intervals for testing and/or replacing fixturing contacts. A good way to check
fixture contact resistance is to construct and use a shorting block. For more information on creating shorting blocks,
see the Cirris Web Site.

2.5 Service
Cirris Testers are modular in design for easy servicing. If your Cirris tester requires service, as directed by Cirris
support personnel, the aected module or the entire tester may need to be sent to Cirris for repair. If needed during
the repair period, a loaner tester can often be provided. You should not attempt to service any circuit board at the
component level. All component-level service should be performed by Cirris technicians.
2.6 Conditions of Operation
The CH2 xHVC test system is intended to be used indoors at a temperature of 50 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to
40 degrees Celsius). Best performance can be obtained at a relative humidity less than 70%. Insulation Resistance
Measurements will degrade at over 70% relative humidity.
If rack mounting the system components in an electronics cabinet be sure not to block the vents on the sides or
backs of the system enclosures and provide adequate ventilation in the enclosure. Also be certain to provide appro-
priate support for the components.
Never apply external voltages to contact the test points or probe input of your Cirris tester. Power supplies and other
accessories not approved by Cirris may cause damage or present a hazard. If you use a Cirris product in a manner
not specified in this manual and the accompanying help system, the protection provided by the product may be im-
paired.

4. Software Installation
4.1 Requirements for a Station Controller

4.2 Install the Easy-Wire Software
The installation for the latest version of the Easy-Wire Station software would have been included on a USB flash
drive with the shipment of a new CH2 xHVC system. To be compatible with the xHVC system, the test station PC
controller must be running Easy-Wire version 2020.1.0 or later. The installation is straightforward and can be accom-
plished by simply following the instructions on the screen.
In order to reduce the opportunity for driver conflicts between your tester and the Windows operating system, it’s
recommended that the Easy-Wire software be installed before attaching the tester.
During the software install, the drivers will automatically load to your machine. If the installation is aborted or fails, you
can install the drivers manually. The driver needed to run the USB testers is called Silicon_Labs_Driver. The current
version can be found under C:\Program Files (x86)\Cirris\Easywire\Silicon_Labs_Driver.
If connecting the CH2 xHVC test station to a server using the Cirris Server Software, all the connected test stations
and the server software should be the running the same software version. For quick reference, the Easy-Wire version
can be found on the software’s Main Menu. See the Cirris Server Software Install document for instructions on install-
ing the server software and for connecting test stations to the server database.
If using the Cirris Server Software, test programs created on standard CH2 testers will be visible, and can be used, on
a CH2 xHVC test station. Test programs created on the CH2xHVC system that don’t use the external (Chroma) power
supply can also be shared with standard CH2 systems.
Instructions for the initial start up of the software are included in the System Set Up section of this manual. It’s sug-
gested that the hardware be configured and connected to the PC-controller before starting the Easy-Wire software.

4.3 Install the National Instruments Drivers
The CH2 xHVC uses a GPIB interface to communicate between the Easy-Wire software and the Chroma Power
Supply. The supplied National Instruments GPIB-USB-HS+ device will be used for this purpose. The installation for
the NI-488.2 software drivers needed to support the device can be found on the USB flash drive supplied with the
test system. The installation is straightforward and can be accomplished by simply following the instructions on
the screen once the installation has been started. The NI-488.2 driver can also be downloaded from the National
Instruments web site. The installation will require a reboot of the PC controller when it’s completed.

5. System Set Up
As part of setting up a safe CH2 xHVC test station, the test system should be separated from the normal work flow
as noted in the Safety Section at the beginning of this manual. For improved performance it should also be placed at
least 2 feet (60cm) from electrical noise emitting devices such as florescent lights and electric motors.
5.1 Setting up the CH2 xHVC Base Unit
Place the CH2 xHVC Base Unit on top of the Chroma Power Supply enclosure. Embosses on the top of the Power
Supply enclosure are positioned to accept the feet of the Base Unit. lf packaging the system in an electronics rack,
position the Chroma Power Supply directly beneath the CH2 xHVC Base Unit. This positioning will accommodate
expansion enclosures with additional test points. Mounting brackets are available for rack mounting the hardware but
additional support for the units would also be required when mounting the units in an enclosure.
Using the USB cable supplied with the tester, insert the
USB Type B connector found on one end of the cable
into the FROM PC (USB) port on the back panel of the
Base Unit enclosure and connect the other end of the
cable to a USB port on the test station PC controller.
The banana plug on the red probe supplied with the test
system can be plugged into the Probe port on the Base
Unit or on any Expansion Scanner. For safety reasons
the probe must NOT be used or plugged into the tester
during high voltage testing.

5.2 Installing Optional Expansion Scanners
The test system may have included Expansion Enclosures
providing additional test points. Each Expansion Enclosure
would have included a power cord, a grounding cable with ring
lugs on both ends and a “box-to-box” daisy-chain cable.
Larger systems can be configured in one of three ways:
Stacking: Stacking Expansion Scanners on the Base Unit is the
standard system configuration. Standard length “box-to-box”
daisy-chain cables that connect the Base Unit and Expansion
Enclosures support this system configuration.
Racking: The CH2 XHVC Base Unit, the Chroma Power Supply
and the Expansion Scanner Enclosures are all designed to
accommodate racking in standard 19” electronics cabinets as
an alternative to direct stacking. If racking the units, mounting
ears are available from Cirris, but it will also be necessary
to support the weight of the units within the cabinet. Finally,
be sure not to block the vents on the units and to provide
adequate ventilation. Standard length “box-to-box” daisy-chain
cables that connect the Base Unit and Expansion Enclosures
typically support this configuration.
Distributed: Expansion Scanners can also be spaced apart to allow for a shorter interface cable to the Device Under
Test (DUT). Custom box-to-box cables are required to support this configuration. The maximum total length of box-to-
box cables is 200 ft (60m).
To install the Expansion Enclosures, connect the box-to-box cable from the OUT connector on the Base Unit to the IN
connector on the first Expansion Scanner Enclosure. A box-to-box cable can also be connected from the BRANCH
connector on the Base Unit or on another Expansion Enclosure to the IN connector of an Expansion Enclosure when
distributing the Expansion Enclosures. The ground cable can be connected when installing the xHVC Power Supply
and the power cord can be installed later at the completion of the system set up process.

5.3 Connecting the xHVC Power Supply
It’s important to note that the function buttons on the Chroma Power Supply are locked at the factory. Communication
with the unit in the CH2 xHVC system is handled exclusively through the Easy-Wire software and in typical usage it
will not be necessary to interact directly with the Chroma Power Supply. However, should it become necessary to
access the unit’s function keys for configuration purposes or when sending the unit for calibration, the password to
unlock the keys is “AAAA.” To access the Key Lock screen, from the Chroma Main Menu, scroll down using the F2
button to 5. Key Lock and press F3 to Select. Enter the password using the F1 button, press F3 to Enter and F4 to
Exit.
All the connections between the Chroma Power Supply and the CH2 xHVC Base Unit will be made on the back
panels of the enclosures. No connections are made on the front of the Chroma Power Supply during set up or testing.
1. Check the red Voltage Selector switches on the back panel of the
Chroma Power Supply and ensure that they’re set to match the voltage
of the AC power input in accordance with the adjacent labeling.
2. Connect the end of the black ground cable with the ring lug to
the ground point on the CH2 xHVC Base Unit. The ground point
is on the back of the Base Unit chassis slightly to the right and
below the AC power input receptacle. It will be necessary to
remove the grounding screw to connect the ground cable ring
lug before reinserting and tightening the screw. If the system is
equipped with Expansion Enclosures, at the same time connect
the ground on the Base Unit to the ground on the first Expansion
Enclosure using the ground cable supplied with the Expansion
Enclosure.
If uncertain of the quality of the ground provided through the
power cord, a separate ground wire can be used to connect the
ground point on the CH2 xHVC Base Unit to earth ground.
Loosen the nut on the ground stud on the Chroma Power
Supply. The stud will be marked with a ground symbol as shown.
Slip the stripped and tinned end of the ground wire through the
hole in the stud and re-tighten the nut. Make certain not to trap
the wire’s insulation to assure a good connection.
3. Using the black Return/Low cable, connect the right-angle banana
plug into the black GND (ground) receptacle under the HV AUX
INPUT label on the back panel of the CH2 xHVC Base Unit.
Connect the other end of the cable with the straight banana plug
connector to the RTN/LOW receptacle on the back panel of the
Chroma Power Supply.
4. Using the white HV Cable, connect the red, right-angle banana
plug into the red HV receptacle under the HV AUX INPUT
label on the back panel of the CH2 xHVC Base Unit. Connect
the opposite end of the cable with the longer, white proprietary
connector to the HV Output receptacle on the back panel of the
Chroma Power Supply. Match the “star” pattern of the connector
with that of the receptacle to ensure the connector is fully seated.
