Safety
General safety instructions
Warning! Whenusing this tool all basic safety precautions must be followed to avoid therisk of
fire, electric shock and personal injury. Readthese instructions carefully before using theproduct
and keep them for future reference.
• Keep theworking areatidy.
Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.
• Take stock of your working environment.
Do not expose thetool torain. Donot use thetool in moist or wetareas. Keeptheworking
area welllit. Neveroperate thetool near flammable liquid orgas.
• Avoid electric shocks.
Avoid body contact with earthed objects, such as pipes, radiators, ovens or refrigerators.
• Keep other people at asafe distance.
Do not allow anyone not involved in thework process to touch thetool or its electric cable,
especially children. Keepall bystanders at adistance.
• Store thetool in asafeplace.
When your tools are not in use, keep them in alocked, dry area, away from children.
• Do not overload thetool.
Correct feed rate makes thework better andsafer.
• Use thecorrect tool for thejob.
Do not try to use small tools to perform jobs requiring more powerfultools. Donot use atool
for apurpose for which it was not designed,e.g. using acircular saw for lopping branches
offtrees.
• Wear suitable clothing.
Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewellery, they could get caught in movingparts. Non-
slip shoes are recommended for outdoorwork. Wearahairnet or similar if you have longhair.
• Always use safetywear.
Wear safety glasses. Useaface mask or dust filter when working in dusty environments.
• Use dust extractors.
If thetool is equipped with or connected to adust extractor/collector, make sure that it is
turned on and used correctly.
• Do not misuse thelead.
Do not jerk thelead, grip theplug itself when disconnecting thepower. Makesure that
themains lead does not come into contact with heat, oil, or sharpedges.

• Clamp theworkpiece down tightly.
If possible use vices or clamps to hold theworkpiece inplace. Thisis much safer than
holding theworkpiece in onehand.
• Do not reach toofar.
Make sure that you stand steady and balanced all thetime.
• Look after youtools.
Make sure that they are clean and that theedges are sharp for maximum effect and best results.
Follow themanuals recommendations regarding lubrication and replacement of accessories.
Inspect themains lead regularly. Ifit is damaged it should be replaced by aqualified service
technician. Inspect all leads and cables regularly to check for any damage. Makesure that
themachine’s/tool’s handles and controls are clean, dry and free from oil and grease.
• Turn thepoweroff.
Pull out theplug and push in theemergency stop button before servicing or changing any
blades, drill bits, cutters or sandingdiscs.
• Remove all spanners and repairtools.
Make ahabit of checking to make sure that themachine is free of all spanners and tools
before turning thepoweron.
• Avoid unwanted starting.
Do not walk around with your finger on thetrigger of apower tool if it is pluggedin.
Make sure that theon/off switch is set to OFF before plugging in any powertool.
• Use thecorrect extensionleads.
If you use extension leads outdoors, only use those designed for outdooruse. Onlyuse
extension leads with thick enough diameter core wires and roll out thewholelead.
• Use your common sense and be careful.
Think before carrying out any task, so that it is carried out safely. Neveroperate machines/
power tools when you are tired or under theinfluence of medicine.
• Check thefollowing before turning thetoolon:
- That all guards and other parts are intact and in workingorder.
- That moving parts are free and correctly aligned.
- That no moving parts can get caught.
- That no defects are apparent.
- Other factors that can influence theexecution of thework.
- Asafety guard or any other part that is damaged should be repaired by atradesman or
replaced. Damaged power leads and switches must always be replaced by atradesman.
Neveroperate atool if you cannot stop or start thetool comfortably.
• Use only recommended accessories.
Theuse of non-recommended accessories can cause accidents and personal injury.
• Should only be repaired by aqualified technician.
Thetool conforms to current safety requirements. Repairs to thetool should only be carried
out by atradesman using original spares; otherwise thetool could cause accidents and
personal injury.

Safety instructions specic to Pillar Drills
• Pillar drills may only be used indoors in dryareas.
• Do not work on aworkpiece that is too small to fasten down safely.
• Keep your hands away from theend of thedrill.
• Do not use drill bits longer than 175 mm or which protrude more than 150 mm from
thechuck. They might bend orbreak.
• Only use drill bits intended for thematerial of theworkpiece. Donot use circular wire brushes,
routers, shapers, hole cutters or rotary planes in this pillardrill.
• When drilling large workpieces, support them at tablelevel.
• Do not drill freehand, use clamps or vices to secure theworkpiece.
• Avoid overloading thedrill. Donot press down toohard.
• Make sure that there are no nails or foreign objects in theworkpiece.
• If theworkpiece is hanging over theside of thetable and there is adanger of it falling off,
clamp it down or support theother end of theworkpiece.
• If using adrill vice, clamp it onto thetable.
• Make sure that all clamps are properly tightened before you start drilling.
• Do not place any other tools on or move theworkpiece on thetable whilst thedrill is running.
