Main Harness Wiring Instructions
This guide describes in detail the connection of each wire. Some of the wires may have more than
one possible function. Please read carefully to ensure a thorough understanding of this unit.
N1/2 RED (+)12V constant power input
Before connecting this wire, remove the supplied fuse. Connect to the battery positive terminal, the
constant 12V supply to the ignition switch, or the fusebox.
NNOOTTEE: Always use a fuse within 12 inches of the point you obtain (+)12V. Do not use the 5 A fuse in
the harness for this purpose. This fuse protects the module itself.
N1/2 BLACK (-) chassis ground connection
Connect this wire to a clean, paint-free sheet metal location (driver kick panel) using a factory bolt
that DOES NOT have any vehicle component grounds attached to it. A screw should only be used
when in conjunction with a two-sided lock washer. Under dash brackets and door sheet metal are
not acceptable ground points. It is recommended that all security components be grounded at the
same location.

N1/3 WHITE (-) parking light input
Connect this wire to the “indicator light output” of the security system. Configure the security
system as a negative output.
NNOOTTEE::This input will be enabled only with the ignition OFF (not usable during a remote start operation).
N1/4 WHITE/BROWN (-) turn signal input
Connect this wire to the “indicator light output” of the security system. Configure the security
system as a negative output.
NNOOTTEE::The turn signal input will be ignored in the following case: The key is left in the ignition switch after
the ignition is turned OFF (and not taken out and insert again) and the “Prevent Door Locking if Key left in
Ignition” is enabled. In this case CAN-IM will ignore a valid arm/lock input and will automatically flash
the turn signals rapidly (100 msec on 100 msec off) for 5 seconds to notify the user.
N1/5 BLACK/WHITE (-) domelight input
Connect this wire to the “domelight supervision relay output” of the security system. Configure this
output as negative.
NNOOTTEE::This input is effective only if the following conditions are met:

all doors are closed
➤➤
the dome light switch is in the position “light when door opened”
➤➤
the ignition is OFF
N1/6 YELLOW (+) ignition status output
Connect this wire to the “switched ignition input” of the security system.
NNOOTTEE::The ignition output will be forced to the OFF state during the remote start operation so that the
security system will not be triggered.
N1/7 GREEN (-) door status output
Connect this wire to the “(-) door trigger input” of the security system.

N1/8 BLUE (-) trunk status output
Connect this wire to the “(-) instant trigger input (trunk input/shunt)” of the security system.
NNOOTTEE::This output will be artificially activated by the CAN-IM when trunk release input is activated or the
trunk release button is pressed on the original remote of the car while in armed state, in order to prevent
the security system from triggering, in case that the trunk is not automatically released or opened by the
user within a predefined time (usually 5 seconds). This output will remain active as long as the trunk
remains opened. If the trunk is not opened this output will remain active a predefined time (usually 2 min-
utes, but no more than 3 minutes), to simulate the factory auto-relock future, or until a disarm/unlock or
arm/lock command is received on the analog inputs or read on the CAN bus by the CAN-IM.
N1/9 GRAY (+) trunk release output
Connect this wire to the trunk release input of an added security system. Only connect if an added
security system is installed to prevent the security system triggering if the trunk status output
becomes active during after the trunk release button is pressed on the vehicle’s original factory
remote control.
N1/10 not used
N1/11 ORANGE/GREEN CAN-H bus wire
Connect this wire to the CAN-H ( ORANGE/GREEN) wire in the car.
NOTE: Do not cut or interrupt the wire in the car.
N1/12 ORANGE/BROWN CAN-L bus wire
Connect this wire to the CAN-L ( ORANGE/BROWN) wire in the car.
NOTE: Do not cut or interrupt the wire in the car.

N2/1 GREEN/BLACK (-) arm/lock input
Connect this wire to “lock #30 common output” of the door lock harness of the security system.
The “lock #87 normally open input” of the security system must be grounded.
NNOOTTEE::If the “Comfort Closure” option is enabled in the CAN-IM and the ignition is OFF (the windows
cannot be activated with the ignition ON), then the comfort closure function will be implemented by the
CAN-IM when this input is activated.
➤➤
If a comfort closure function is in progress this input will be ignored (in this case the alarm unit is
already in armed state).
➤➤
If the key is left in the ignition switch after the ignition is switched OFF (and not taken out and
inserted again) and the “Prevent Door Locking if Key left in Ignition” is enabled, then the CAN-IM
will ignore this input and will automatically flash the turn signals rapidly (100 msec on 100 msec
off) for 5-seconds to notify the user. During this time the CAN-IM will ignore the Turn Signal input.
Moreover the CAN-IM will send back the disarm/unlock command to alarm unit through the ESP or
Cliffnet buses.
➤➤
If a door or trunk is opened and this input is activated under valid conditions, then the car will
arm/lock when all the doors/trunk are closed. In this case the alarm unit will consider the car fully
armed when all doors/trunk will be seen closed after that. The single exception from the above is
that when the arm/lock command is received and the driver’s door is opened, then the driver’s door
will not be locked when it is then closed. There are also some cars in which neither door will be
locked if the driver’s door is opened. Also there are some cars in which the passenger’s door will
not be locked if it is opened.
➤➤
The arm/lock message for safe locking the doors will be automatically written onto the CAN bus
by the CAN-IM after the remote start status input is de-activated if the disarm/unlock driver’s door or
all doors was not received on the appropriate inputs or on the CAN bus.

N2/2 BLUE/BLACK (-) disarm/unlock driver’s door input
Connect this wire to “unlock #30 common output” of the door lock harness of the security system.
The “unlock #87 normally open input” of the security system must be grounded.
NNOOTTEE::The disarm/unlock driver’s door activated input will interrupt the execution of an arm/lock com-
mand (with or without comfort closure) or the trunk release timed status.
N2/3 BLUE (-) disarm/unlock all doors input
Connect this wire to “(-) second unlock” of the auxiliary harness of the security system.
NNOOTTEE::The disarm/unlock all doors activated input will interrupt the execution of an arm/lock command
(with or without comfort closure), an disarm/unlock driver’s door command or the trunk release timed sta-
tus.
N2/4 GREEN/WHITE (-) arm output
Connect this wire to the “(-) Arm input” only if an added security system is installed in order to
arm this system when the arm/lock button is pressed on the original factory remote control of the
vehicle.
NNOOTTEE::If the “Comfort closure” option is enabled in the CAN-IM and ignition is OFF (the windows can-
not be activated with ignition ON), then the comfort closure function will be implemented by the CAN-IM
after this output is activated.

NNOOTTEE::The disarm/unlock driver’s door or all doors detection will interrupt the execution of an arm/lock
command (with or without comfort closure) or the trunk release timed status.

Connect this wire to a channel output of the security system. Configure the security system output
type as “validity” .
NNOOTTEE::This input is only valid with the ignition OFF.

If a short pulse (less than 1-second) is received on this input, and CAN-IM finds any of the front
windows above the “small vent” position, it will roll down the front window(s) to the “small vent”
position, else if it finds any of the front windows above the “large vent” position, it will roll down
the front window(s) to the “large vent” position. In any other case the input will be ignored. In no
case the windows will be rolled up.
➤➤
If a long pulse (greater than 1-second) is received on this input, CAN-IM will roll down the
front window(s) as long as the input remains active.

This input is not valid during the execution of the comfort closure function after an arm/lock

Connect this wire to a channel output of the security system. Configure the output type as
“validity”.
NNOOTTEE::This input is only valid with the ignition OFF.

If a short pulse (less than 1-second) is received on this input, if CAN-IM finds any of the rear
windows above the “small vent” position, it will roll down the rear window(s) at the “small vent”
position, else if it finds any of the rear windows above the “large vent” position, it will roll down the
rear window(s) at the “large vent” position. In any other case the input will be ignored. In no case
will the windows be rolled up.

If a long pulse (greater than 1-second) is received on this input, CAN-IM will roll down the rear
window(s) as long as the input remains active.

N3/3 VIOLET/BLACK (-) no connection

N3/4 BROWN (-) headlight input
Connect this wire to the security system channel output required for headlight activation feature
or to the “(+/-) Light/Flash” wire of the remote start module. Configure this as a negative output
from that system.
N3/5 GRAY/BLACK (-) fuel door release input
Connect this wire to a channel output of the security system. Configure the output type as “validity”
or “timed” (1-second is enough).
N3/6 ORANGE/BLACK (-) radio input
Connect this wire to “retained accessory output” of the security system. Or connect to a channel
output of the security system. Configure the security system channel output type as “latched”.
NNOOTTEE::If the ignition is ON or the key is still in the ignition switch after ignition OFF, this input will be
ignored.
➤➤
This function will only be effective if the radio is left ON when the ignition is turned OFF and the
key is taken out from the ignition switch.
➤➤
If the car is nnootteeqquuiippppeeddwith a radio it is strongly recommended that this input not be
connected as it will discharge the vehicle’s battery (especially for Seat, and some Skodas, and VW’s).
➤➤
As long as this input is active and effective the original factory remote control of the vehicle is not
functional because the messages broadcasted on the bus will simulate that the ignition is ON or the
key is still in the ignition switch after the ignition is OFF. This is the natural behavior of the vehicle.

N3/7 RED/WHITE (-) trunk release input
Connect this wire to the “(-) 200mA Channel 2 output” of the security system.
NOTE: After a valid activation of this input, the CAN-IM will activate it’s “Trunk Status Output” in order to
prevent the security system from triggering, in case that the trunk is not automatically released or opened
by the user. This output will remain active as long as the trunk remains opened. If the trunk is not opened
this output will remain active a predefined time (usually 2 minutes, but no more than 3 minutes), to simu-
late the factory auto-relock feature, or until a disarm/unlock or arm/lock input is received on the corre-
sponding inputs or read on the CAN bus.
➤➤
During the time-out for the auto-relock feature or while the trunk is opened the CAN-IM will ignore
other trunk release commands received on this input or read on the CAN bus.
➤➤
If the trunk release input is activated while the car is disarmed/unlocked the “Trunk Status Output”
will not be grounded artificially. Also there will be no time-out for the auto-relock feature because this
feature will be disabled in this case.
➤➤
This input will not be valid during the execution time of an arm/lock or disarm/unlock command.
However, a valid activation of this input will end a comfort closure in progress after an arm/lock.

Connect this wire to “Tachometer Input wire” of the remote start module.
NNOOTTEE::This output is active only during remote start.
N4/2 BLUE (-) remote start status input
Connect this wire to the “Status Output” of the remote start module.
NOTE: As long as this input is active the CAN-IM will:

Monitor the engine speed (RPM) and activate RPM output.

Read the external temperature and if this is less than 5-degrees C, the CAN-IM will activate and
keep active any “cold weather” features of the car after engine is on for 5 seconds (rear defroster)
Other features like mirror defroster, driver-heated seat, passenger-heated seat are automatically
active with engine running if their buttons were left active before leaving the car.

During the active state of the remote start status input, the CAN-IM also detects any of the
following conditions on the CAN bus for activating the remote start shutdown output:

N4/3 BROWN (+) remote start shutdown output
Connect this wire to a positive shutdown input wire, such as the “Brake Switch” or “Reverse Backup
Shutdown” wire of the remote start module.

ESP (N6) Wire Connection Guide
This connector is used to connect a Directed VIPER, PYTHON, or MATRIX ESP2 alarm unit
with the CAN-IM module.
NNOOTTEE::The jumper J1 must be set for ESP connection (see below).
NNOOTTEE::The following functions are accomplished trough this connection:

Arm/lock the alarm unit when the arm/lock button on the original factory remote control is

pressed.

Disarm/unlock the alarm unit when the disarm/unlock button on the original factory remote
control is pressed.

Activate channel 2 of the alarm unit when the trunk release button on the original factory remote
control is pressed, so that the alarm unit is not triggered.

Activate/deactivate panic on the alarm unit when the panic button on the original factory remote
control is pressed.
This connector is also used to program the alarm unit with the Bitwriter

DIP Switch (SW1) Setting Guide
There are 5 selectable DIP switch settings (factory default settings shown below) on the CAN-IM
module that provide following functions:
1. Factory Ignition Locking ON/OFF - When this switch is ON (default) the CAN-IM will
configure the vehicle convenience module so that the “Lock at 15 KM/hour” feature is ON. If
this switch is OFF, the CAN-IM will configure this feature OFF in the vehicle convenience
module. If this switch is ON the security system Ignition lock feature should be turned OFF.
2. Factory Ignition Unlocking ON/OFF - When this switch is ON (default) the CAN-IM will
configure the vehicle convenience module so that the “unlock when key removed” feature is ON.
If this switch is OFF, the CAN-IM will configure this feature OFF in the vehicle convenience
module. If this switch is ON the security system Ignition unlock feature should be turned OFF.
3. Comfort Closure ON/OFF - When this switch is ON (default) the CAN-IM will provide the
comfort closure feature any time a valid pulse is detected on the ARM/LOCK input. The CAN-
IM will close all windows and doors included in the factory comfort closure feature. Comfort
closure will monitor the windows position and close all openings completely. Comfort closure
will stop immediately if a valid pulse is detected on the UNLOCK (either) input wire. If any
opening is obstructed during the comfort closure, the vehicle will automatically reverse the
window. The CAN-IM will detect this condition and retry to close any window or sunroof that
has reversed after 10 seconds. The CAN-IM will try a maximum of three times to close the
opening and then stop. Comfort closure will not occur when a valid pulse is detected on the
ARM/LOCK input when the ignition is ON.
4. Prevent Door Locking if Key left in Ignition ON/OFF - When this switch is ON (default) the
CAN-IM will not lock the doors when the ARM/LOCK input is received and the key is left in
the ignition. In addition, the CAN-IM will flash the turn signals rapidly (100 msec on 100 msec
off) for 5-seconds to notify the user. During this flashing sequence, the CAN-IM will ignore the
turn signal input. The CAN-IM will also send back the disarm/unlock command to the security
system through the ESP bus.

5. Sunroof include in comfort closure ON/OFF - When this switch is ON (up position–not
default) the CAN-IM will include the sunroof in the comfort closure.
NNOOTTEE::DO NNOOTTset this switch to ON if the car is not equipped with sunroof or improper function of the
central locking system may result.
Bi-Color LED
The CAN-IM has one bi-color LED that will visually report the status of the initialization routine
and the active/inactive status of the module. The operation and interpretation of the LED colors is
described in the next section.
Powering Up the CAN-IM
After power-up, the CAN-IM must first always reads the CAN bus of the vehicle in order to identify
if the type of the car is compatible with the firmware of the module.
During the initialization phase the CAN-IM will perform the following steps:
➤➤Checks if an internal ( hardware or software ) error occurred: if true, illuminate the LED red for
5-seconds and then extinguish the LED (this is an unusual occurrence).
➤➤Checks if the platform of the car is recognized (max 3-sec); if not, illuminate the LED red for
2.5-sec and then extinguish the LED.
➤➤Waits indefinitely for the ignition to be ON and during this time flashes the LED green for 100

➤➤Waits 3 times (max 4-sec each) after ignition on for all relevant messages to be detected on the
bus and during this time flashes the LED green rapidly (130ms ON, 130 ms OFF); if not,
illuminate the LED red for 2.5-sec and then extinguish the LED.
➤➤Waits a maximum of 4-sec after the detection phase for the convenience computer in the car to
be programmed according to DIP switches 1,2 and 5 and for proper operation of CAN-IM
module; if not successful it returns to the second step; if successful it illuminates the LED green
for 2.5 sec and exits the initialization phase (enters normal operation in which it reads and
broadcasts on the CAN bus).
If DIP switch 1,2 or 5 (5 only if OFF to ON) are changed during normal operation and the ignition
is turned On, then the programming of the convenience computer in the car is done again. The

LED will flash green rapidly (130msec ON, 130 msec OFF) as long as the programming is in
progress (aprox 1-sec), then it will illuminate green if the programming was successfully or red if
not, for aprox. 2.5-sec. During normal operation, the CAN-IM enters sleep mode if no input is
active or no CAN bus activity is detected for more than 4 sec. When the CAN-IM is in sleep mode
the LED is extinguished; when the CAN-IM is not in sleep mode the LED is illuminated green.
This is a method to verify proper operation of the CAN-IM module.
Finding the Wires in the Vehicle
The CAN-L wire (ORANGE/BROWN) and CAN-H wire (ORANGE/GREEN) can be found
easily in one of the following places:
➤➤In the left A-pillar (left the driver’s side under the fuses box) (T28/5 for CAN-L and T28/4 for
CAN-H).
➤➤Under the steering column (connector T20d/15 – J527 for CAN-L and connector T20d/14 –
J527 for CAN-H).
In case that a Directed remote start module is used (VALET 561T) the following connections with
wires in the vehicle must be made:
➤➤Pin 1 “Output to ignition circuit” (PINK) of the heavy gauge relay satellite connected to ignition
wire (BLACK) found under the steering column (connector T20d/17 – J527 )
NNOOTTEE::In the new PASSAT the color of this wire is GREEN/GRAY.
➤➤Pin 2 “Output to starter circuit” (PURPLE) of the heavy gauge relay satellite connected to starter
wire (RED/BLACK) found under the steering column (connector T20d/18 – J527 )
NNOOTTEE::In the new PASSAT the color of this wire is RED/GRAY.
For the new PASSAT also the wire from the clutch switch must be connected (utilizing a relay for
polarity inversion) to Pin1 (BLUE) “Status output” of the 4-pin satellite (561T) in order for the
engine to start.

Recommendations for Channel Connections
The following channels of a VIPER system are recommended for connection with the CANIM
module:
➤➤Channel 2 for “Trunk release” function
➤➤Channel 3 for remote start
NNOOTTEE::If a remote start module is not needed this channel can be used for “Headlight ON/OFF” func-
tion.
➤➤Channel 4 for “Front windows down” function
➤➤Channel 5 for “Rear windows down” function
➤➤Channel 6 for “Fuel door release” function or “Headlight ON/OFF” function.
