This product is only operable when using battery supplied power.Using other power
sources may cause harmful conditions and will void all guarantees for this product.
Inight Safety
As this product may interfere with operation of inflight navigation system and
navigation system communication networks, usage of this product in an aircraft is
prohibited by law in several countries. If by law permits you using this product in an
aircraft, please switch to Inight Mode to turnoff radio wave transmissions.
Environmental Restrictions
Do not use this product at a gas station or refueling station.Usage of this product is
also prohibited at fuel storages, chemical factories, and locations with explosives.
Environmental Safety
Do not use this product in the following locations: gas station, fuel storages,
chemical factories, demolition worksites, potentially hazardous explosive locations
such as fuel area under ship holds, transport and storage of fuel or chemical
substance facilities, or locations with particles, dust, metal dust, chemical
substances etc in the air.Please remember that sparks in these environments can
cause explosions or re hazards resulting in human casualties.
Road Safety
Unless in an emergency, drivers in moving vehicles are prohibited from using hand
held equipments for calls.In certain countries, it is permitted for drivers in moving
vehicles to use hands-free devices for calls.Usage of this product may interfere
with normal operations of medical instruments.Many hospitals and clinics prohibit
use of these equipments.
Non-Ionic Radiation
To ensure efficiency of radio wave transmission and reduce interference, user
should operate this product under the recommended normal environments.As with
other similar mobile wireless communication equipments, in order to comply with
required operations and for the safety of the users, it is recommended that the user
maintains a safe distance from the antenna during the operation of the equipment.
Dopod Defective Pixel Warranty Policy
As the LCD display on the handheld product is made up of high precision
components, possible lit or dark pixels (Note) appearing on the display screen is
a common occurrence from the product manufacturing process.If your purchased
product meets the following conditions, you may request replacement of the LCD
display module within seven days from the purchase date.
1. Total count of three or more malfunctioning pixels (lit or dark); or
2. Any two malfunctioning pixels (lit or dark) within 5mm of each other.
Lit Pixels: blue, red, white, or green dots on specic locations of LCD screen.
Dark Pixel: black dot on specic locations of the LCD screen.

At every screen on the phone there will be
one mouse cursor indicating where you
should use your stylus.
After purchasing this product, carefully read
through the user manual before operating.
For your reading convenience, this manual
is designed with many tips and services in
order to help you nd information quickly.
Page Format
Generally, each page is separated into up-
per and lower areas, regardless of the left
or right half of the page. Browsing is made
from left to right and then from up to down
in a Z shape, continuing on the next page.
There are small red boxes on the outer
edge of the contents page to assist you in
nding speci c chapter topics.
Topic Format
The beginning of each topic always starts
with the page on the right. The topic ( rst)
page will explain what functions are cov-
ered under the speci ed topic. The Actions
Index will help you to quickly nd out how
to perform certain actions. The last part is
the contents page. The contents page is
separated into three levels. For example,
in Chapter 3, 3. 1, 3. 2, 3. 3 serve as the
second level sub-headers; 3. 1 is then fur-
ther divided into 3. 1. 1 Phone screen and
3. 1. 2 Input PIN number information sub-
sections. Similar types of functions may be

Introduction to Handset and Accessories
1QWERTY
Keyboard
You can use the QWERTY Keyboard to enter characters; for a
detailed description of the QWERTY Keyboard, please refer to
Chapter 2.
2Messaging Center
button
Press the Messaging Center button to quickly access the
Messaging Center.
3Left LED indicator
The left LED indicates the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status. For a
description of the LED fl ash, please refer to contents after this
chapter.
4Right LED
indicator
The right LED indicates event notifi cations, charging status,
and UMTS/GSM status. For a description of the LED fl ash,
please refer to contents after this chapter.
5Internet Explorer
button
Press the Internet Explorer button to quickly access Internet
Explorer.
6Video camera lens When dialing a video enabled call, the video camera lens will
be used to take video images.
7Scroll wheel
When using the Today screen or an application, the scroll
wheel can scroll the cursor up/down to move to an option.
Press down on the scroll wheel to select the option under the
cursor. When listening to music, the scroll wheel can adjust
the volume level.
8OK button
Press the OK button to confi rm the entered data or close the
program. The OK button has the same function as the upper
right corner screen icon.

9Voice command
button
Use Voice Tags for voice dialing, or press & hold to activate
the Voice Memo program.
10 MicroSD slot Use to insert a MicroSD memory card and access data on it.
11 Touch screen You can write freehand on the touch screen with the stylus,
or use it to click on the screen to select an item.
12 Video call button Use the video call button to quickly dial video enabled calls.
13 Left confi rmation
button
Press the left confi rmation button to execute an action or
application shown in the lower left part of screen.
14 Right confi rmation
button
Press the right confi rmation button to execute an action or
application shown in the lower right part of screen.
15 Start Menu button Press the start menu button to access the start menu.
16 Talk button Press the talk button to answer calls or start a call.

When using programs, press the up/down/right/left
navigation button to lock the cursor focus in each option,
press the confi rm button to select the option that is focused.
18 Hang up button Press the hang up button to end calls or immediately return
to the Today screen.

Press the OK button to confi rm the entered data or close the
program. The OK button has the same function as the upper
right corner screen icon.

20 Car antenna
connector
Connect the mobile phone to the car antenna for better call
quality. Just remove the rubber cap and connect the antenna
to the antenna connecter when in use. When not in use,
please replace the rubber cap. For more information on the
offi cial car antenna, please visit the Dopod website.
21 Self photo mirror You can use the self photo mirror to preview the frame when
taking a picture of yourself.
22 Main lens The main lens can capture photos up to a maximum of 2
megapixels.
23 Capture mode

Use to set the camera to normal mode or macro mode.
24 Flash The fl ash lets you capture clear photos and movies in the dark
25 Power button
Press the power button to turn off the screen. While the screen
is off you will still be able to receive calls and messages. If you
wish to turn off the unit, please hold down the power button
for 5 seconds. When the phone is off you will not be able to
receive calls or messages.
26 Comm Manager Press the Comm Manager button to access the Comm
Manager screen.
27 Camera Button
Press once to activate the camera function. If the camera
function is already activated, press once to capture photos or
record movies.
28 Stylus Use the stylus to write freehand on the touch screen.
29 Strap notch You can hook the wrist strap to the notch.
30 IR port Transmit data through the IR port.
31 Back cover latch Flick this latch to open the back cover.
32 Headset / sync /
power connector
Use the USB cable to sync data or recharge the unit; this port
also allows use of a stereo headset for hands free calling,
listening to music, or directly connecting to an AC adapter for
recharging.
33 Reset button Use the stylus to press the reset button to restart your phone.
34 Microphone During a call or voice recording, the microphone will
automatically begin to record.

LED Indicator
The right LED indicator (orange/red/green) is used to indicate the phone
battery and network status; the left LED (blue/green) is used to indicate the
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless network connection status.
Right LED indicator status:
Light signal Status
Solid green Batter charging is complete.
Not lit Battery compartment is empty.
Solid orange Battery is charging, or phone is being sync’ed with the computer
using ActiveSync through USB cable.
Flashing green Found telecom network.
Flashing red Insuffi cient battery power level (less than 4%).
Flashing orange
Battery temperature is higher than the specified operating
range of 48°C or lower than 0°C and battery charging has been
stopped.
Orange/green
LED indicator
Battery is malfunctioning. Unit displays the “Battery
Malfunctioning” message ( ).Unplug the AC adapter to resume
fl ashing green LED.
Dark/fading Disconnected from the network.
Left LED indicator status:
Light signal Status
Flashing blue Bluetooth mode is in “Activated” or “Detected” mode.
Flashing green Wi-Fi mode is “Activated”
Accessories
1AC adapter Recharges the phone battery.
2Sync cable Connects to computer to sync data.
3Headset
The headset has volume control buttons and Send/End buttons.
You can use the buttons to answer or hang up incoming calls.
Please insert the headset to headset / sync / power connector to
listen to music or make calls.

1.2 Insert USIM/SIM Card
A USIM/SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is provided by your
telecom service provider containing your basic data, for example, phone
numbers and address book. Before installing a USIM/SIM card, please
make sure that power to the phone is turned off.
!If you do not insert a USIM/SIM card, you will not be able to use
the mobile communication functions
Insert USIM/SIM Card
1. Flip open the card latch: hold the phone in one hand, front side facing
down and place the phone in middle of your palm. Follow the directions
indicated in the diagram to fl ip open the card latch.
2. Remove the battery: remove the battery cover and carefully pry beneath
the notch to the left of the battery to remove the battery.
3. Insert the USIM/SIM card: insert the USIM/SIM card in the slot with the
card’s gold contacts facing down. Gently push the battery into position.
Replace the battery cover.
To remove the USIM/SIM card, gently push on the bottom of the card to slide
it out of the slot. Then replace the battery cover.
To avoid damage to the USIM/SIM card data and the phone, the phone
will automatically turn off when you open the battery cover.

Install MicroSD card. You can store information such as pictures, music,
documents, and program data on the MicroSD card.

1.5 Learn about the Today Screen
The 838 Pro handheld phone comes with specialized themes from
the factory. This manual uses the Windows Mobile™ 5 default Today
screen, themes and menus as an example.
The Today screen shows the following important information: status
indicator, time and date, upcoming appointments, personal information,
tasks to be processed, messages, missed calls, and device lock. You
can directly tap the icon to access a program or confi guration. The icons
located on the status bar include: roaming, available GPRS/UMTS
services, time, missed calls, new messages, reception status, and
GPRS/UMTS connection status.
If you wish to customize the displayed items, background picture
contents etc. on the Home Screen, please select Start > Settings >
Today.
For Today screen setup, please refer to 7.4 Today screen & themes.
