Unpackingandsettingup
Please alsoobserve the information contained inthepacking instructions.
Afteropeningtheboxplaceasidethe poly^styrene insertwith
the complete accessories.Removetheconsolewiththeinserted
recordplayerfromtheboxandputtheunitintheplaceinten-
dedforit.Firstofallreadtheinstructionsslipsontheunit
andthenremovetheseafterwardswiththepackingfilms.We
recommend youkeeptheoriginalpackagingincaseyouneed
this låter onforfurthertransport.
Toreleasethetransportlockingscrews(Fig.1) turn thesein
clockwisedirectionuntiltheyslidedownapproximately15 mm
andthentightenthesebyturning them furtherinclockwise
direction. In thisway,therecordplayerisspring mounted in
playingposition(B).

Nowplacetheplatterdirectlyontothemotoraxis.Remove
thetonearmcounterbalancefromthepolystyreneinsertand
placethe stem ofthecounterbalance,afterreleasingthelocking
screw (2), intotheopeningintendedforthisatthebackend
ofthetonearm.Atthesametime,the triangulär recessonthe
stemshouldpointdownwards(Fig.4).Balancingas well as
settingof stylus pressureandanti-skatingwhichisnowneces-
saryaredescribedin more detailonpage18.
Pleaserefertotheseparatedatasheetforthestyluspressureof
thecartridge al readyinsertedintheunit.
Nowconnecttothereproducing amplifierandplacethe mains
lead intothesocket.Pleasepayattentiontotheseparateinfor-
mationintheseinstructions.
Subsequenttransport
Theplatterliesonthemotoraxisofthe electronic centraldrive
withoutadditionallockingandmustberemovedbeforeeach
transport.Inaddition,thetransportlockingscrewsmustbe
loosenedin anti-clockwise direction,pulledupwardsand
securedbyfurtherturning(A).Thetonearmcounterbalance
shouldberemoved.
Makesurethatthetonearmislockedandthatthestyluspro-
tectionis swivelled downwards.
If youintendtodispatchyourunit,makesurethatthepackaging
is impeccable and,ifpossible,usetheoriginalpackaging.
Connection totheACmains
Theunitcanbeconnectedto alternating current50or60Hz,
110 - 125V or220- 240V andis normally setto230V.
Yourrecordplayercanberunonmainsfrequenciesof50or
60Hzwithoutconversionofthemotor.
Conversionofthemainsvoltageshouldalwaysbecarriedout
byspecialistdealersorauthorized Dual serviceworkshops.
Connectiontothe amplifier
ConnectthecartridgeleadequippedwithRCA(cynch) plugs
tothe phono-magnet inputoftheamplifier(black= rightchan-
nel, white=left channel).Connecttheonewireequippedwith
the cable bracketorscrewitunderthe damp marked"GND"
ontherearoftheamplifier.
Sothatyourreceiverorreproducingamplifierbedesignedfor
DINjacks,haveyourspecialistdealeradaptthisbyreplacing
thecompletecartridge lead.

Pleasedonotforgettoconnectthechassis lines oftheright
hand(green)andlefthand (blue) tonearmlinestothechassis
oftheunitwhenconvertingthisfromcynch(RCA)toDIN
jacks.
Dust cover
In orderto placethedust coverinposition,turntheunitround
sothatthespecialhingesareinfrontofyouandareeasilyac-
cessible.Firstofallmakesurethattheinsertbracketsonthe
hinges,intowhichthecover will beplaced,areincorrect posi-
tionbeforeyouplacethedustcoverinpositionparalleltothe
bracketsandpushthisin fully.
Inthisposition(opening angle approx.60°)thecovercanalso
beremovedatall times.
Shoulditbenecessarytocorrectthebalancingmoment(elastic
forcewhichkeepsthecoverabovetheconsole),thiscanbe
carriedoutbyturningbothknurledscrews.Pleaseadjustboth
screwsequally. Inmost cases,correctionby half a screwturn
eachwillbe sufficient.
Settingupandoperation
Beforeplayingthefirstrecord,pleaseadjustthepickuparm
return mechanism follows:
1. Releasethepickuparmandraiseitwiththearmliftlever.
2. Swingthearmtothecenteroftheturntable.(Thearmis
returned automatically).
Selectplatterspeed,331/3or45 rpm, thenunlocktonearm,
move stylustipprotectorupwards.
Nowremovetonearmfrompostandswingit över therecord.
Afterthetonearmhasbeenswung över therecordtheturntable
platterautomaticallystartstorotate.Whenthetonearm islifted
fromitspostandplacedbesidethetonearmrest,theplatter
willrotate.Therecordontheplattercanbecleaned(withan
antistatic cloth etc.)whenthetonearmisinthisposition.
Duringthisoperation,attherecorddiameterof30cmor 17 cm
anindex hole isperceptible,thisindicatesthecorrect set-down
pointforthe diamond tothe lead-in grooveoftherecord.
Thisaidforthecorrectsettingofthetonearm maybeswitched
offifthetonearmshouldbeloweredwhena 30cmrecordis
usedatanotherposition,forex.intheareaofa 17cmrecord.
In orderto lower thetonearmtoa specificpositionofthe
record only a light touchoftheguidelever(8)orbypressing
theLIFTbutton(10)isnecessary.
Thecueingliftnowoperatesandthediamondisplacedcare-
fully ontherecord.
Afterplayingtherecordthetonearmwillreturntotherest
andshut-offtheunitautomatically.Thecuecontrolleverwill
returntoitsoriginalposition. It is recommended tolockthe
tonearmandto flap downthestylusprotectionafter play.
If thearmisnotreturnedautomaticallydue,for example, to
an anormality inthelastgrooveofa record,werecommend
thatyoulift the armwiththeliftleverorbypressingtheLIFT
button, andswingitinwardsbyhand.
Interruption ofPlay(Pause)
Placethecueingcontrolin I position.Whenthisisloweredthe
recordcontinuestoptay.Thelastfewnotesplayedbeforethe
pausearerepeated.

Technicalinformation
Cartridgeand stylus
Pleaserefertothe"Informationonyour unit's cartridge",en-
closedwiththeseinstructionsforuse.
Fittinga 1/2"cartridge(seepage3)
With extremelylight ULMcartridges (ultra-low-mass), your
Dual recordplayerdevelopsoutstandingreproductioncapabili-
ties. In this case, the characteristicsof the tonearm areso excel-
lent thatconsiderablyheavier1/2"cartridges also function
underoptimumconditions.Proceedasfollowsifyouwishto
fita 1/2"cartridge.
1)If thereisoneonyour unit, removetheremovalprevention
screw (Fig. 5/"S").
2)Swivelthetonearmlift(13) backwardsand remove the ULM
cartridgefromtheholder(Fig.6).
3) Slide theshortholder plate (Fig.7) approximately 5 mm
backwardsandliftitoff.
4)Placethe long holderplateontothetonearm(Fig.8)in
sucha way,thatitliesonthesurfaceandthebackandis
pointingupwardsatthefrontatan angleof approximately
30°. Shifttheholderplatesothatits large openinglies
abovetheroundguide lug inthetonearm.Nowcarefully
swiveltheholderplateintohorizontalpositionandtightly
pull itforwards until youcan feel itclickingintoposition.
5)Attachthe1/2"cartridgewiththeenclosedaccessoriesto
thecartridgeholder.Thishasbeenfittedcorrectlyifthe
stylus — viewedfromabove — isintheV-shapedrecessof
theenclosedfittingtemplate.Viewedfromtheside,the
stylusmustbeintherectangularrecess(Fig.9).
6)Connectthecartridgeholder'sconnectiontothecartridge.
Theconnectionshave color codes:
redR righthandchannel
greenRGrighthandchannelchassis
blueGLleft handchannelchassis
whiteL lefthandchannel
7)Placethecartridgeholderatan angle frombelowontothe
tonearm head, pressit fully backwardsandupwardsuntil
youcanfeelitclickingintoposition.Nowcarefullyswivel
thetonearmliftforwardsand,ifyou wish, lockthecartridge
andthestylustopreventremovalbyscrewingthedescribed
screw.
8)Dependingon requirements, screwononeorbothofthe
encloseddisk-shapedadditionalweightstotherearofthe
tonearmcounterbalance(1). Tum thesmallerthreadofthe
specialscrewintothethreadofthecounterbalance.Screw
oneadditionalweightontothescrew-withtheknurled
marking ontheoutside — iftheweightofthefittedcartridge
isno more thanapproximately6.5g andasecondoneifit
isheavier.
9)Nowonceagain carefullybalance thetonearm — as described
inthesectionon"Balancingthetonearm".
Fittingcartridgeswithrecess-typecartridge assembly
Cartridgeswitha Dualrecess-typecartridgeassemblycanbe
fitted inthesamewayas 112" cartridges.Thecartridgeholder
(Fig. 10)isdesignedto permit fittingofsuch cartridgeswithout
anadditional attachment screw.
Removalprevention
Thankstoaningeniousdevice,thecartridgeandstyluscanbe
easilysafeguardedagainstunwantedremoval.Forthispurpose,
the self-tapping screwprovidedwiththeaccessoriesisscrewed
intothe hole onthelefthandsideofshiningpinonthe
holderplate(Fig.5).Atthesame time, makesurethatthe
tone-arm lift(13)isverticaltothecartridgeheadcenter.
Stylus
Thestylusissubjectedtonaturalwearandtearduringnormal
playing. Therefore,we recommend youoccasionallycheckthe
stylusand,inthecaseof diamond styli, thisshouldbecarried
outafterapproximately300playinghours.Yourspecialist
dealer will bepleasedtodothisforyoufreeofcharge.Worn
or damaged (splintered)stylichiselthemodulationfromthe
groovesanddestroy records. Therefore, onlyuseasreplacement
thestylustypes recommended inthetechnicaldataofthe
cartridge.Copiedstyliresultinaudiblequalitylossesandin-
creasedwearandtearofrecords.Please remember that,for
physicalreasons,thestylusholderwiththediamondstylusis
extremelyfineandmustthereforebenecessarilysensitiveto
impacts, shocksoruncontrolled movement. In ordertohave
thestyluschecked,takethe complete cartridgeholder(remo-
valfromthetonearm is describedabove)toyourspecialistdealer.
Settingthetuninganti-resonator
YourDualrecordplayerhasa tuninganti-resonatorwhichper-
mits optimumadaptionofthetonearmtothecartridgebeing
used. NotonlyDual U LMcartridgesbutalsoconventional1/2"
cartridgeswitha netweightfrom2 to9 g canbe optimally
adaptedwiththisdevice.FortheULMcartridgefittedinthe
factory,youcanfindthe value tobesetinthedatasheetof
thecartridgewhichisenclosedwiththeseinstructionsforuse.
However,thiscanalsobe determined fromthefollowingdia-
graminthesamewayasfor 112" cartridges.
AstheexampleoftheULM60E shows,youselecttheown
weightofthecartridgeonthehorizontal scale, move vertically
upwardsuntilyoufindthecorresponding line forthe com-
plianceandyouprojectthispointtotheverticalscalefrom
whichyoucanthenreadofftheoptimumtuningvalue.
In ordertosetthetuninganti-resonator, turn thescaleringin
clockwisedirectionuntilyouseethedeterminedscalevalue
abovethepointer(Fig.3).
ThevaluefortheDual ULM 60E is7.8.Itisrecommendedto
carryouttuning settingbeforeinserting thecounterbalanceinto
thetonearm. In thiscase, hold the stemwithonehand andturn
thescalering withtheother.
Note
If youturnthe damping selectorintherangeofthewedge-sha-
pedmarkingtostopposition,thetuninganti-resonatorissafe-
guardedagainsttransport damage.

Precisetonearmbalancingis important, aboveallforcartridges
witha lowstylus pressure.Thetonearmneed only bebalanced
once. However,itis recommended tocheckthetonearmbalance
from time to time.
Thetonearmisbalancedifit remains ina horizontalposition
whensuspendedfreelyandifitreturnstothishorizontal posi-
tionifpushedupwardsordownwards.
Thetonearmisfirstofallbalanced approximately byshifting
thecounterbalancewiththe stem inthetonearmtubeandthen
exactlybalancedbyturningthefrontknurled wheel onthe
counterbalance(1):
1. Withthetonearmstilllockedtothetonearmpost, tum the
platterafew times byhandinclockwisedirection.
2. Setthestyluspressure(3)andanti-skating(5)to"0".Un-
lock thetonearmandswivelabovethetonearmrest.
3. If thetonearmdoesnotreturntoa horizontalpositionon
itsown,releasethelockingscrew(2)andshiftthecounter-
balancewiththestem until youhavean approximate balan-
ce. Thestemofthecounterbalanceshouldthenbelocked
bytighteningthelockingscrew.
4. Subsequentlybalancethetonearmexactlybyturningthe
frontknurledwheelonthecounterbalance.
5.Setthestyluspressureandanti-skating.
Settingstyluspressure
Eachcartridgerequiresacertainstyluspressurewithwhichop-
timumreproductionisobtained.You willfindthisspecification
forthe fitted cartridgeontheencloseddatasheet.
If thetonearmhasbeenexactlybalanced,thestyluspressure
necessaryforthecartridgeissetbyturningthestyluspressure
scale (3).Thestyluspressurecanbecontinuouslysetwithin
therangefrom0 to20 mN (0- 2 g),wherebythedigitson
thescalerepresentthefollowing.
1= 10mN å 1 g
2= 20 mN A 2 g
Agraduationmarkintherangefrom2-15 mN isanalogousto
this(0.2-1.5 g)1 mN (0.1g).
Theunitworksreliablyfroma styluspressureof2.5 mN
(0.25g)onwards.
Anti-skating
Theskatingforceactinguponeachtonearmleadstoone-sided
wearandtearofthestylusandrecordandcancausedistorted
reproduction.
In ordertobalanceouttheskatingforce, a counterforceexactly
definedwithregardstosizeanddirectionmustbeapplied.The
anti-skatingdevice(5)ofyourHiFirecordplayerfulfillsthis
requirement.
Forstylustypes usual orstandardizednowadays,separate set-
tingscalesareavailablein accordance withtheprintedsymbols:
O Settingforspherical styli.
oSettingforbiradial(elliptical) styli.
CD4 settingforplayingCD4 recordswithCD4 specialcartrid-
ges.
Adjustment oftheanti-skatingdeviceshouldbecarriedout
synchronouslytosettingofthestyluspressure: tum the anti-
skatingdevicetothedigitofthescaleconcerned,whichcor-
respondstotheadjustedstyluspressure.For example, inthe
caseof 10mN(1.0 g)styluspressure alsoplace theanti-skating
rotarybuttoninposition "1".
Theskatingforceisreducedbyapproximately30% inthe
caseof"wet"playing(playingrecords moistened withliquid).
Inthiscase,itisrecommendedtoaccordinglyadapt the setting.
CueControl
Yourunitisequippedwitha shock-freecuecontrolsilicone-
damped inbothdirections.
Thusthetonearmcanbeloweredtoanydesiredpointonthe
record more gentlythanispossiblebyhand.The cue-control
lever(8)hastwopositions:

Thecuecontrol holds thetonearmabovetherecord,andit
canthereforebe moved toanyposition över therecordwith
completesafety.A light touchonthecue-controllever(8)orby
pressingthe LIFT button(10) to the • positionlowersthetone-
armgently.Thecue-controlreturnstothe Z positionauto-
matically attheendoftherecord.
Atthesametime,theloweringspeedcanbecontinuously
variedwiththeadjustingwheel(6)(Fig.2):
< = slower
<« = faster
Withthecueingcontrolin I position,theheightofthestylus
abovetherecordcanbevariedbyapproximately6 mmbytur-
ningtheadjustingscrew(4).
Pitchcontrol
Eachofthestandardizedspeeds331/3and45 rpm canbe
variedwiththepitchcontrol.
If thepitchswitch(18)isswitchedtoON,thepitchcanbe
varied— separatelyforeachspeed— withintherangeof
±5.5 % withtherotarycontrols(17)and(19).
Contraryto mostquartz-controlled recordplayers,inthecase
ofyour Dual recordplayereachpreselectedspeedinthepitch
rangeisexactlyquartz-exactandPLLcontrolled.
If thepitchswitch(18)is inOFF position,thespeedcorresponds
quartz-exactlytothesetratedspeed,independentlyofhow
therotarycontrols(17)and(19)areset.
Quartz-exact luminous stroboscope
Theprecisestroboscopemarkingontheplatteredgeisflashed
atwitha quartz-exactfrequencyviaanLEDluminouselement
(12). In thisway,theindicationisneitherdependentonthe
mains frequencynordoesitneedseveralstroboscoperingsfor
variousspeedsandmainsfrequencies. It isasexactasa quartz
dock.
If thegraduatedmarking seems to stånd still, bothspeedshave
beensettoquartzprecision.Bymeansofthespeedoftheap-
parentlywanderinggraduationmarking,thespeedselected
withthepitchrotarycontrolcanbe determined withextreme
ecactness:1 mark/seconds correspondtoadeviationof0.9%.
If thegraduated markingseemstobe moving, the speed ishigher
thantherated speed, ifitappearsto move contrarytothedirec-
tionofrotation,thespeedisslowerthantheratedspeed.
