Notes on Safety
Approved usageThe Cerabar S is a pressure transmitter used for measuring gauge or absolute pressure
depending on the version. Level is measured using the Commuwin II display and
operating program or with the HART or INTENSOR handheld terminals.
Mounting,
commissioning,
operation
The Cerabar S has been designed to operate safely in accordance with current technical,
safety and EU standards. If installed incorrectly or used for applications for which it is
not intended, however, it is possible that application-related dangers may arise, e.g. B.
product overspill by incorrect installation or adjustment. For this reason, the instrument
must be installed, connected, operated and maintained by personnel that are authorised
by the user of the facility and who are suitably qualified. The manual must have been
read and understood, and the instructions followed. Modifications and repairs to the
device are permissible only when they are expressly approved in the manual.
Explosion hazardous
area
The measuring system used in the explosion hazardous area must comply with all existing
national standards. The instrument can be supplied with the following certificates as listed
in the table. The certificates are designated by the first letter of the order code on the
nameplate (see table below).
•Ensure that technical personnel are adequately trained.
•All measurement and safety regulations which apply to the measuring point are to
be observed.

– Devices located in safe areas still require a certificate if their outputs run into explosion
hazardous areas.
Direct voltage
A terminal to which or from which a direct current or voltage may be applied or supplied.
Alternating voltage
A terminal to which or from which an alternating (sine-wave) current or voltage may be
applied or supplied.
Grounded terminal
A grounded terminal, which as far as the operator is concerned, is already grounded by
means of an earth grounding system.
Protective grounding (earth) terminal
A terminal which must be connected to earth ground prior to making any other connection to
the equipment.
Equipotential connection (earth bonding)
A connection made to the plant grounding system which may be of type e.g. neutral star or
equipotential line according to national or company practice.

1 Introduction
ApplicationsThe Cerabar S pressure transmitter measures the pressure of gases, steam/vapour and
liquids and can be used in all areas of chemical and process engineering.
Operating principle
Ceramic sensor
The system pressure acts directly on the
rugged ceramic diaphragm of the pressure
sensor deflecting it by a maximum of 0.025
mm. A pressure-proportional change in the
capacitance is measured by the electrodes
on the ceramic substrate and diaphragm.
The measuring range is determined by the
thickness of the ceramic diaphragm.
Metal sensor
The process pressure deflects the
separating diaphragm with a filling liquid
transmitting the pressure to a resistance
bridge. The bridge output voltage, which is
proportional to pressure, is then measured
and processed.
Level measurement
The hydrostatic pressure of a column of
liquid enables its level to be measured
continuously by a pressure transmitter if the
density ρof the liquid is known.

1.1 Measuring system
The complete measuring system consists of
•Cerabar S pressure transmitter with 4…20 mA signal output
•optional four-character pressure display
•power supply 11.5…45 VDC, in Ex area 11.5…30 VDC
For electronic versions with HART or INTENSOR protocol, a digital communication signal
is superposed on the signal current and is used for remote calibration.
These instruments have additional functions to also measure level.
Operation can be carried out using:
•the Commuwin II operating program
•the universal HART Communicator DXR 275 (HART protocol)
•the Commulog VU 260 Z handheld terminal (INTENSOR protocol)

2 Installation
This section describes:
•the mechanical installation of Cerabar S with and without diaphragm seals
•the electrical connection
2.1 Mounting instructions without diaphragm seal

The Cerabar S without diaphragm seal is mounted in the same way as a manometer. The
use of shut-off valves and pigtails is recommended. Its position depends upon the
application.
•Measurement in gases:
Mount the shut-off valve above the
tapping point so that condensate can
run back into the process.
•Measurement in steam:
Mount with a pigtail above the tapping
point.
The pigtail reduces the temperature in
front of the diaphragm to almost
ambient temperature. The pigtail must
be filled with water before start-up.

•Measurement in liquids:
Mount on the shut-off valve below the
tapping point or at the same height
PVDF adapter For instruments with PVC adapter, a maximum torque of 7 Nm is permitted. The thread
connection may become loose at high temperatures and pressures. This means that the
integrity of the thread must be checked regularly and may need to be tightened using
the torque given above. Teflon tape is recommended for sealing with the ½ NPT thread.
Mounting the PMP 731 The PMP 731 with metallic sensor is available in the following versions:
•with flush-mounted diaphragm or
•with adapter and internal diaphragm.
The adapter can be screwed on or welded in.
A seal is enclosed appropriate to the material used and version.

2.2 Mounting instructions with diaphragm seal

The Cerabar S with diaphragm seal is
screwed in, flanged or clamped,
depending on the type of diaphragm seal.
•The protective cap of the diaphragm
seal should only be removed just before
mounting in order to protect the
diaphragm.
•The diaphragm of the diaphragm seal of
the Cerabar S must not be pressed in or
cleaned with pointed or hard objects.
•The diaphragm seal and the pressure
sensor together form a closed and
calibrated system which is filled with
filling fluid through a hole in the upper
part. The following rules should be
observed:
–This hole is sealed and not to be
opened.
–The instrument should only be turned
by the diaphragm seal and not by the
housing.
Level measurementFor level measurement the Cerabar S must
always be installed below the lowest
measuring point.
•The instrument should not be installed
within the flow of material, in the outlet
of the tank or at a place in the tank
where pressure pulses from agitator
blades may occur.
•Calibration and function testing are
easier to carry out if the Cerabar S is
mounted downstream from a shut-off
valve.
Mounting with
temperature spacers
The use of temperature spacers is
recommended when the continuous
extreme product temperatures cause the
maximum permissible ambient
temperature to exceed +85 °C.
•Note when mounting that the
temperature spacer increases the
maximum height by 100 mm.
•Due to the hydrostatic column in the
temperature spacer, the increased
height also causes a zero point shift of
approx. 10 mbar.

Mounting with capillary
tubing To protect from high temperatures, moisture or vibration, or where the mounting point is
not easily accessible, the housing of the Cerabar S can be mounted with capillary tubing
away from the measuring point.
A bracket for mounting on a wall or pipe is available for this.

2.4 Mounting position
Positioning the housingAfter the Cerabar S has been mounted, the housing can be positioned so that:
•the terminal connection compartment can be accessed easily,
•the display can be seen optimally,
•the cable entry and cover of the Z/S keys are protected from water.
The housing can turned through 270°:
•To turn the housing undo the screw below the connection compartment

2.5 Electrical connection
Screened twisted pairs are recommended for the instrumentation cable.
Supply voltage:
Non Ex area: 11.5…45 VDC
Ex area: 11.5…30 VDC, Ex [ia]: 13…30 VDC
Internal protection circuits protect against reverse polarity, HF interference and
overvoltage peaks (see TI 241F "EMC Guidelines").
A test signal can be measured using Terminals 1 and 3 or using Terminal 1 and the
terminal plug for instruments with the CSA certificate without interrupting the process
measurement.

Connecting handheld
terminals
•For protection EEx d do not connect handheld terminals in the explosion hazardous
area.
•Do not replace the battery of the handheld terminal in the explosion hazardous area.
•For the Cerabar S with FM or CSA certificate: Electrical connections as shown in
“Installation drawing” (enclosed in the packing with the Cerabar S).
•For correct transmission of the communication signal, a minimum resistance of
250 Ωmust be present between the connection points and the power supply.

The Commubox FXA 191 connects intrinsically safe Smart transmitters with a HART or
INTENSOR protocol to the RS 232 C serial interface of a personal computer. This enables
the transmitter to be remotely operated with the Endress+Hauser Commuwin II operating
program. The Commubox FXA 191 is used for intrinsically safe signal circuits.

3 Operation
3.1 Local operation
Operating elements Four push buttons are used for local operation. These enable the lower range and upper
range values to be set. The functions of the push buttons are shown in the table below.
Display module A display module is optionally available. Two display modes are available.
•Display in measurement mode: This is shown as standard
•Display in calibration mode: This is shown after pressing one of the push buttons +Z,
–Z, +S, –S once. Returns automatically to measurement mode after 2 seconds.

3.4 Operating with the HART or INTENSOR protocol via
Commuwin II
When using the Commuwin II display and operating program (if possible from Version
1.5 upwards) the Cerabar S is calibrated and operated via either :
•an operating matrix or
•the graphic operating mode
The appropriate server (e.g. HART or ZA 672) must therefore be activated. A description
of the Commuwin II operating program is found in the operating manual BA 124F.
Operating matrix The advanced functions of the Cerabar S can be accessed in this operating mode from
the menu.
•Each row is assigned to a function group.
•Every field displays one parameter.
The calibrating parameters are entered in the appropriate fields.
Graphics operation In this operating mode the calibration parameters for specific configuration procedures
are entered in the appropriate box.

4.1 Commissioning the measuring point

values:

Lower and upper range
values:
– reference pressure is
near the lower range and
upper range values
A reference pressure is available that is near to the lower and upper range values. The
appropriate current must be calculated using to the following formula:
I – current value
p – reference pressure near the lower
and upper range values
pLRV – pressure of lower range value
pURV – pressure of upper range value

Calibrating for position
of the display
(bias pressure)
If the display does not show zero after zero point adjustment (due to position), then this
can be corrected to zero by entering a bias pressure or by adopting the bias pressure
acting (depending on position). This does not affect the current output.
