1.2 Layout
The positioner CMSX has a sturdy plastic housing. It includes all necessary components for regulation
of double- and single-acting pneumatic semi-rotary drives and double-acting pneumatic linear drives.
These include:
– Two valves (CMSX-S-...-S-..., single-acting) or four valves (CMSX-...-D-..., double-acting) with con
nection block and pneumatic ports (èFig. 1, aA and Fig. 2, 9) as a positioning system for the
pneumatic drive
– A shaft towards the outside (èFig. 1, 7) with potentiometer as feedback system
– Equipment electronics with microprocessor and electronics for signal processing and control
– Terminals and cable entry with cable connector (èFig. 1, 5and Fig. 2, 4and 5) for the electrical
connection
– Two-line LCD display (èFig. 1, 2and Fig. 2, 2)
– 3 keys on the circuit board (èFig. 1, 4, 5and 6) under the housing cover (èFig. 1, 1).
Besides the cable entry with cable connector, the housing is equipped with a blanking plug
(èFig. 1, 4) – for mounting of an additional cable entry with cable connector (optional). Located on

the opposite side are the earth terminal (èFig. 1, aB and Fig. 2, aA ) and the pneumatic ports
(èFig. 3, aA and Fig. 2, 9) with supply port, working ports and exhaust port.
Under the housing cover is the printed circuit board with the device electronics. Located on the printed-
circuit board are:
– The two-line LCD display
– 3 keys for configuration and commissioning
– Terminal strips for electrical connection.

With the Add, Sub and Set keys, configuration and commissioning can be carried out in a menu-driven
manner. During commissioning, the setpoint values can be specified through keys as needed.
The two-line LCD display shows all texts in English as short texts. A maximum of 8 characters per line
can be shown.

3 Function and application
The positioner is intended for position control of pneumatic semi-rotary drives and double-acting linear
drives in process automation systems.
The product is intended for use in industrial environments. Outside of industrial environments, e.g. in
commercial and mixed-residential areas, actions to suppress interference may have to be taken.
Appropriate for operation are drives with a mechanical interface in accordance with VDI/VDE Direct
ive 3845. Appropriate mechanical mounting adapters are required for mounting (accessories
èwww.festo.com/catalogue).
The CMSX enables simple and efficient position control based on the PID control algorithm. Positions
are specified via an analogue setpoint signal (0 V … 10 V or 0 mA … 20 mA or 4 mA … 20 mA). The integ
rated potentiometer senses the current position of the drive and forwards the measured value to the
internal regulator. The regulator compares the setpoint value specified by analogue means to the
measured value and actuates the internal valves accordingly by means of pulse-width modulation
(PWM).

3.1 System structure
The following figure shows the basic system structure of a process valve unit, comprising a CMSX posi
tioner and a semi-rotary drive with process valve.

Positions are specified through an analogue setpoint signal via a master PLC/IPC or manually on-site
via an external setpoint generator (èFig. 5, 1).
The positioner with potentiometer and fast-switching valves (èFig. 5, 2) and the semi-rotary drive
with process valve (èFig. 5, 5, 6) are connected to each other in such a way that a closed control
circuit results. In this control circuit, the position of the drive represents the controlled variable. The
potentiometer registers permanently the position of the drive (actual value of the controlled variable)
and transmits this to the controller as an electric signal. It compares the analogue specified setpoint
position (reference variable) to the current position and calculates from this the positioning signals
(manipulated variable – pulse-width modulation) for the fast-switching valves. The fast-switching
valves control the drive by pressurizing and venting the cylinder chambers.

3.2 Product variants
The product variants CMSX...-A and CMSX...-C are equipped with different valves. If the operating
voltage supply fails, the valves return to the normal position. If the compressed air supply is switched
on and the operating voltage supply fails, the positioner will react differently depending on the product
variants used.
If the operating voltage supply is switched back on, the last operating status is effective again immedi
ately. If the regulator is activated, the current setpoint value is valid again immediately.

4 Transport and storage
– Comply with all legal requirements for the handling of hazardous substances and the transport of
dangerous goods.
For return to Festo èChapter 5.
– Store the product in a cool, dry, UV- and corrosion-protected environment. Ensure storage times are
short.
5 Requirements for product use
 Installation and commissioning is to be carried out only by qualified personnel, in accordance with
the documentation.
 The product may only be used in its original status without unauthorised modifications.
 Only use the product if it is in perfect technical condition.
 Observe the product labelling.
 Comply with all applicable national and international regulations.
 Only use compressed air in accordance with specifications (èTechnical data).
 The supplied cable connector is used only for cable throughfeed. To ensure the specified degree of
protection IP65, seal each cable entry tight (cable connector, blanking plug).

Hazardous substances can endanger the health and safety of personnel and cause damage to the envir
onment. To prevent hazards, the product should only be returned upon explicit request by Festo.
– Consult your regional Festo contact.
– Complete the declaration of contamination and attach it to the outside of the packaging.
– Comply with all legal requirements for the handling of hazardous substances and the transport of
dangerous goods.

6 Installation

6.1 Mechanical installation
Note
 Protect the underside of the device against splash water, moisture and humidity by
selecting an appropriate mounting position.
6.1.1 CMSX-S-... (rotary)
Note
 Observe the direction of rotation of the semi-rotary drive.
 Only use appropriate mounting adapters.

The angle position of the semi-rotary drive is sensed by the integrated potentiometer through the shaft
of the positioner. The shaft of the positioner can be turned in any way, since it does not have a mechan
ical stop. But the permissible sensing range is 100°. The sensing range and correct alignment of the
shaft of the positioner is depicted on the underside of the housing.

During mounting, the shaft of the positioner with coupling and the drive shaft must be connected so
that the swivel angle of the drive lies within the sensing range.
Direct mounting
For attachment, the positioner has a mounting hole pattern in accordance with VDI/VDE Directive
3845. It can be mounted in any position. The positioner is mounted directly to the semi-rotary drive
with a mounting adapter. The shaft of the positioner is connected through the mechanical coupling to
the shaft of the semi-rotary drive (èFig. 12).
 Use only appropriate mounting adapters. Please select the corresponding accessories from our
catalogue (accessories èwww.festo.com/catalogue).
1. Determine the direction of rotation of the
semi-rotary drive.
2. Close process valve.
3. Switch off the compressed air and the
power supply.
4. Fasten the mounting adapter to the
positioner.

5. Secure the mechanical coupling 5to the
shaft of the positioner 1.

6. Place the positioner with mounting adapter
and coupling on the semi-rotary drive and
align. The swivel angle of the drive must be
within the sensing range of the positioner
(èFig. 12).

6.2 Pneumatic installation
Caution
Despite switched-off compressed air supply – dependent on the product variant – one
or both working ports of the positioner can remain under pressure.
 Vent the working ports with the help of the Sensor function (menu 1) before you
remove the tubing lines (èSection 7.6.5).
Note
Use suitable fittings (G1/8) and tubes.
Recommendation: Push-in fittings of type QS-1/8-...-I and tubes of type PUN.
Prior to the pneumatic installation:
1. Ensure there is no voltage or pressure applied.
2. Secure the system against being switched back on.

6.3 Electrical installation
Warning
Electric voltage.
Injury due to electric shock.
 Switch off the power supply before opening the device.
Note
Electrostatically sensitive devices.
Damage to the internal electronics due to electrostatic discharge.
 Observe the handling specifications for electrostatically sensitive devices.
 Ensure assembly personnel are electrostatically discharged.
Note
The IP 65 degree of protection depends on the type of electrical connection. Inappropri
ate cables or an incorrect installation will reduce the degree of protection of the posi
tioner.
Note
Long signal lines reduce the resistance to interference.
 Keep signal lines shorter than 30 m.
Note
The signal value is unstable if different voltage sources are used for the signal value and
power supply.
 Apply a bridge to the earth terminals of the signal value and the power supply pin 4
and pin 6.

1. Switch off the power supply and the compressed air supply.
2. Loosen the housing screws (èFig. 1, 3). Remove the cover of the housing.
3. Guide the electric connecting cable through the cable connector to the terminal strips.
– Outside diameter of the electric connecting cable: 10 ... 14 mm.
– Conductor cross-section: Max. 2.5 mm²
– Use wire end sleeves.
Note
Installation errors can damage the electronics and fast-switching valves or cause mal
functions.
 Leave the cable at pin 9 unchanged (èTab. 4). This cable is internally connected to
the earth terminal at the plant (èFig. 16, 2).
4. Wire connections (èTa b. 4 ).
– Tightening torque: Max. 0.6 Nm.
5. Connect the earth terminal (èFig. 16, 2) with low impedance (short cable with large cross section)
to the earth potential.
6. Tighten the union nut on the cable connector.
– Tightening torque: 2 Nm.
7. If commissioning is to be carried out immediately after installation, leave the cover dismounted.
8. Place the housing cover in position and tighten the 4 housing screws (èFig. 1, 3).
– Observe the correct position of the seals.
– Tightening torque: 1.5 Nm.
