The use of an extension cord is not
recommended. However, if an
extension cord is required to reach
the nearest wall receptacle, use only
a UL-listed, 3-wire, grounded, 14
gauge, 15A, 125V appliance exten-
sion cord.
CAUTION:
DO NOT use an extension cord with
any of the 208/230-volt models.
This is a temporary method.
UL-listed adapters are avail-
able at most hardware stores.
Because most 2-prong outlets are
not grounded, we strongly advise
against using an adapter plug.
However, a tempora D, connection
may be made where local codes
permit and if the 2-prong wall out-
let is properly grounded.
When you plug the adapter in,
make sure the larger prong goes
into the larger slot to provide the
proper polarity, for the power cord.
FORPROPERGROUNDING:
1 Screw the adapter to the outlet,
using the outlet cover screw.
2 Groundthe outlet through the house
wMng.
When disconnecting the power
cord from the adapter, hold the
adapter close to the outlet while
pulling the plug out. If this is not
done, the grounding connector is
likely to break with repeated use.
If the grounding connector breaks,
DO NOT USE the air conditioner
until a proper ground has again
been made.

TempControl
The temp control is used to maintain the
room temperature. The compressor will cycle
on and offto keep the room at the same level
of comfbrt. When you turn the knob to COOLER
(blue) the indoor air will become cooler. Turn
the knob to WARMER (red) and the indoor air
will become warmer.
HEAT PUMP MODELS
When the outdoor temperature is lower than
25°F., heat is provided by the electric heater in
the air conditioner instead of by the heat pump.
AMode Control
HIGH COOL and LOW COOL provide cooling with
different tim speeds.
HIGH HEATand LOW HEATprovide heating with
diLL(rent fan speeds.
LOW FAN or HIGH FAN provides air circulation
and filtering without cooling or heating.
NOTE:
If you move the switch from a cool or heat setting
to OFFor to a fan setting, wait at least 3 minutes
before switching hacR to a cool or heat setting.
A3-minute delay is automatically provided on the
Heat/Cool and Heat Pump models.

Fan Switch
On Heat/Cool models, the tim switch lever is
located in a hole through the control panel. To
reach it, you need to remove the front grille.
Use a small screwdriver to change the setting.
Cool only models have a rocket" switch on the
fi'ont of the control box.
When set at CYCLE (clown) the tim cycles on and
offwhen cooling or heating. When set at CONT
(continuous, up) the fan runs all the time. The
unit is shipped in the CONTsetting.
AVentControl
The vent control is located behind the front
grille. When set at CLOSE, only the air inside
the room will be circulated and conditioned.
You may adjust it 1)?7removing the fi'ont grille.
When set at OPEN, some inside air is exhausted
outside.
NOTE: The vent lever is taped in the CLOSE
position when it leaves the factory. Remove
the tape before using.
TemperatureLimiting
Limiting the maximmn and mininmm settings
prevents users from turning the control to the
extreme heat or cool positions.
The normal range of the temp control is approx-
imately 60°F to 85 °F. The control range m W be
narrowed by the use of the temperature limiting
screws located behind the control panel.
A# Direction
Horizontal louvers on the front grille let you
control the air direction up and clown.
Remove the fi'ont grille to adjust the vertical
louvers side-to-side to direct the air left or right.

Care & Cleaning
Turn the air conditioner off anti
remove the plug from the wall out-
let be%re cleaning.
To clean, use water and a mild
detergent. Do not use bleach or
abrasives.
The coils on the outdoor side of
the air conditioner should be
checked regularly. It is necessa D, to
remove the air conditioner from
the wall case to inspect them. Dirt
build-up occurs on the surf>me
which is not visible from the out-
side. If they are clogged with dirt or
soot it will reduce the cooling or
heating performance anti the unit
will not work properly.
They may be professionally steam
cleaned, a sm_,ice m,ailable
through your GE sma_ice outlet.

Tile front grille can be removed
for more thorough cleaning or
to make the model and serial
numbers accessible.
Toremove:
Pull out fronl tile bottonl and lifk
up from the tabs on the top of the
case.
Toreplace:
Hook tile tabs on tile front grille
even with the tabs on the front of
the case and snap into place.

CAUTION:

bereplacedimmediately.
Operating wkhout tt_e filter in
place or with a damaged tilter will
allow dirt and dust to reach the in-
door coil and reduce the cooling,
headng, airflow and ef_icien W of
the unit.

er is dependent upon it being installed in a wall
case, and used with an exterior grille, both
specifically designed for use with this unit. Use
with an incorrect wall case or wkh an incorrect
grille may result in poor performance and
coukt cause damage to the unit. If yon are not
sure if you have the correct wall case and tt_e
rear grille please contact the compa W where
you purchased the unit.
*For personal safety, this air conditioner must be
properly grounded.
* It is important to have the wall oudet and circuit
checked by a qnalified electrician if there is any
doubt as to whether a proper ground exists.
*Follow National Electrical Code (NEC) or local
codes and ordinances.
CAUTION:
*Do not, under any circumstances, cut or remove
the third (ground)prong from the power cord.
*Do not change the plug on the power cord of this
air conditioner.
*Aluminum house wiring may present special
problems--consult a qualified electrician.
We recommend dmt the 230/208-volt, 60 Hz
models be installed on tt_eir own single branch
circuit supplying 230/208-volt a.c., protected
witt_ a time delay fllse or circuit breaker.

This is recommended %r best per%rmance and
to prevent overloading house or apartment
wiring circuits, which could cause a possible fire
hazard fi'om overheating wires.

The 115-volt models require a 115/120-volt a.c.,
60 Hz grounded outlet protected witt_ a 15-amp
time delay fhse or circuit breaker.
The 3-prong grounding plug minimizes the possi-
bility of electric shock hazard. If the wall outlet
you plan to use is only a 2-prong outlet, it is your
responsibility to have it replaced witt_ a properly
gronnded 3-prong wall oudet.

Installing aJ-Model in an Existing Wall Case
IMPORTANT!
GE strongly recommends the removal of the
old waft case and the installation of a new
GE Waft Case. ff you decide to keep the exist-
ing wall case, you may need a kit to ensure
proper performance, ff you DO NOT use a kit,
you run the risk of poor performance or
product failure. This is not covered under
the terms of the GE warranty. _4
J-model air conditioners may fit in existing wall
cases. However, they often need a kit to properly
adapt tl_e case to tt_e GE air conditioner. Answer
these questions and see the chart below for the
proper kit.
1 What brand air conditioner will you he replacing?
2 What are the dimensions of the wall case
currently in use ?
What is the model number of the chassis currently
in use ? What is the model (or Type) number of the
wall case currently in use ?
Frequendy, d_eJ-model adapter kit will apply to
anodmr brand model "series" or specific vin-
tage. In tt_ese cases, you need tt_e chassis model
number and/or the wall case or "type" number
to confirm the use of the correct adapter kit.
What type of outdoor grille is used with the cur-
rent wall case?
There may be an architectural grille attached
to a wall case to enhance the exterior appear-
ance of the building. Custom grilles may be
used with J-model wall cases provided aJ-model
adapter kit is also used to ensure proper
airflow.

Things That Are Normal

You may hear a pinging noise caused by water being picked up
and thrown against the condenser on rainy days or when the
humidity is high. This design feature helps relnove lnoisUlre
and improve efficiency.
" I K"€L C You may hear the thermostat click when the compressor cycles
on and oft\
Water will collect in the base pan during high humidity or on rainy
clays. The water m W overflow and drip fl'om the outdoor side
of the unit.
On the heat pump units, water _411drip to the outside when the
heat mode is being used. A RAD4 drain kit is available.
The fan may run even when the compressor is not.

*There is a protective time delay (up to 3
minutes) in the heat/cool and heat pump
models. Wait 3 minutes fl)r the air
conditioner to resume heating or cooling.
Airflow is restricted • Make sure there are no curtains, blinds
or furniture blocking tim flont of tim
air conditioner.
The thermostat control
may not be set high
or low enough
The air filter is dirty • Clean the fiher at least ever), 30 days.

The room may have been hot • When the air conditioner is first turned on
or cold you need to allow time for tim room to
cool down or warm up.
Cold air is escaping • Check for open furnace floor registers and
cold air returns.
• Set tim exhaust vent in tim closed position.
Cooling coils have iced up • See fleezing up below.
• Turn the knob to a warmer or cooler setting.
The coolest setting provides maximum
cooling. The warmest setting provides
maximum heating on models with heat.
Ice blocks the airflow
and stops the air conditioner
from cooling the room
• Set the mode control at HIGH FAN or
HIGH COOLwith the thermostat
at a warmer setting.
