We are proud to offer the Model G0510Z Shaper.
This machine is part of a growing Grizzly family of
fine woodworking machinery. When used accord-
ing to the guidelines set forth in this manual,
you can expect years of trouble-free, enjoyable
operation and proof of Grizzly’s commitment to
customer satisfaction.
We are pleased to provide this manual with
the Model G0510Z. It was written to guide you
through assembly, review safety considerations,
and cover general operating procedures. It repre-
sents our effort to produce the best documenta-
tion possible.
A number of shaper cutters for the Model G0510Z
are available through Grizzly. Please refer to
Section 5: Accessories on Page 27, the current
Grizzly catalog, or our website at www.grizzly.
com for more details.
The specifications, drawings, and photographs
illustrated in this manual represent the Model
G0510Z as supplied when the manual was pre-
pared. However, owing to Grizzly’s policy of con-
tinuous improvement, changes may be made at

Manual Before Operating this Machine
The purpose of safety symbols is to attract your attention to possible hazardous conditions. This
manual uses a series of symbols and signal words which are intended to convey the level of
importance of the safety messages. The progression of symbols is described below. Remember
that safety messages by themselves do not eliminate danger and are not a substitute for proper
accident prevention measures.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
MAY result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert
against unsafe practices.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
COULD result in death or serious injury.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
WILL result in death or serious injury.
This symbol is used to alert the user to useful information about
proper operation of the machine.

ation instructions are safe and clearly
understood.
8. KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORS AWAY.
Keep all children and visitors a safe dis-
tance from the work area.
9. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILD PROOF. Use
padlocks, master switches, and remove
start switch keys.
10. NEVER LEAVE WHEN MACHINE IS
RUNNING. Turn power OFF and allow all
moving parts to come to a complete stop
before leaving machine unattended.
11. DO NOT USE IN DANGEROUS
ENVIRONMENTS. DO NOT use machin-
ery in damp, wet locations, or where any
flammable or noxious fumes may exist.
12. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN AND WELL
LIT. Clutter and dark shadows may cause
accidents.
13. USE A GROUNDED EXTENSION CORD
RATED FOR THE MACHINE AMPERAGE.
Undersized cords overheat and lose power.
Replace extension cords if they become
damaged. DO NOT use extension cords
for 220V machinery.
14. ALWAYS DISCONNECT FROM POWER
SOURCE BEFORE SERVICING
MACHINERY. Make sure switch is in OFF
position before reconnecting.
15. MAINTAIN MACHINERY WITH CARE.
Keep blades sharp and clean for best and
safest performance. Follow instructions for
lubricating and changing accessories.
16. MAKE SURE GUARDS ARE IN PLACE
AND WORK CORRECTLY BEFORE
USING MACHINERY.

17. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND
WRENCHES. Make a habit of checking for
keys and adjusting wrenches before turn-
ing machinery ON.
18. CHECK FOR DAMAGED PARTS
BEFORE USING MACHINERY. Check
for binding and alignment of parts, broken
parts, part mounting, loose bolts, and any
other conditions that may affect machine
operation. Repair or replace damaged
parts.
19. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES.
Refer to the instruction manual for recom-
mended accessories. The use of improper
accessories may cause risk of injury.
20. DO NOT FORCE MACHINERY. Work at
the speed for which the machine or acces-
sory was designed.
21. SECURE WORKPIECE. Use clamps or
a vise to hold the workpiece when practi-
cal. A secured workpiece protects your
hands and frees both hands to operate the
machine.
22. DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper foot-
ing and balance at all times.
23. MANY MACHINES WILL EJECT THE
WORKPIECE TOWARD THE OPERATOR.
Know and avoid conditions that cause the
workpiece to "kickback."
24. ALWAYS LOCK MOBILE BASES
(IF USED) BEFORE OPERATING
MACHINERY.
25. BE AWARE THAT CERTAIN DUST MAY
BE HAZARDOUS to the respiratory sys-
tems of people and animals, especially
fine dust. Make sure you know the hazards
associated with the type of dust you will be
exposed to and always wear a respirator
approved for that type of dust.

Additional Safety Instructions for Shapers
1. HAND POSITIONING. Never place hands
directly over or in front of the cutter. As
one hand approaches the cutter, move it in
an arc motion away from the cutter to the
outfeed side. Always keep hand at least 6"
away from the cutter while operating.
2. SAFETY DEVICES. Use a fixture, jig, or
hold-down device to decrease the chances
of injury.
3. SAFETY GUARDS. DO NOT remove the
retractable guard on the fence. Use a guard
or other type of protective device at all times.
Use overhead guard when the fence is
removed.
4. CUTTER HEIGHT. Keep any unused portion
of the cutter below the table surface.
5. STOCK LENGTH. Do not use stock shorter
than 6 inches without special fixtures or jigs.
Where practical, shape longer stock and cut
to size.
6. STOCK CONDITION. The danger of kick-
back is increased when the stock has knots,
holes, or foreign objects in it. Warped stock
should be run through a jointer before you
run it through a shaper.
7. BLIND CUT WHEN POSSIBLE. Blind cuts
keep the cutters on the underside of the
workpiece and provide a distance guard for
the operator.
8. TEST ROTATION. With the machine
unplugged, rotate the spindle to test any
new setup to ensure proper cutter clearance
before starting the machine.
9. DEPTH OF CUT. Never remove too much
material in one pass. Several light passes
are safer and produce a cleaner finish.
10. SHAPING CONTOURED WORK. Always
use a rub collar and a template. DO NOT
start out at a corner. See the rub collar sec-
tion further on in the manual.
11. FEEDING THE WORKPIECE. Always feed
the workpiece against the rotation of the cut-
ter. Never force materials through the shaper.
Let the cutters do the work. Excessive force
is likely to result in poor cutting results and
will cause dangerous kickback conditions.
12. SECURING NUTS AND KNOBS. Never
operate the shaper without the second lock-
ing nut in place over the spindle nut. Always
ensure that the cutters, fence, and spindle
elevator knob have been tightened properly
before beginning any operation.
No list of safety guidelines can be complete.
Every shop environment is different. Always
consider safety first, as it applies to your
individual working conditions. Use this and
other machinery with caution and respect.
Failure to do so could result in serious per-
sonal injury, damage to equipment, or poor
work results.
Like all machines there is danger associ-
ated with the Model G0510Z. Accidents are
frequently caused by lack of familiarity or
failure to pay attention. Use this machine
with respect and caution to lessen the pos-
sibility of operator injury. If normal safety
precautions are overlooked or ignored, seri-
ous personal injury may occur.

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS
110V Operation
NOTICE
The Model G0510Z cannot be rewired for
220V operation! Attempting this will void
the warranty and ruin the machine.
Serious personal injury could occur if you
connect the machine to the power source
before you have completed the set up pro-
cess. DO NOT connect the machine to the
power source until instructed to do so.
Amperage Draw
The Model G0510Z motor will draw 10 amps at
full load.
Circuit Requirements
We recommend using a dedicated circuit for this
machine. You MUST connect your machine to a
grounded circuit that is rated for the amperage
given below. Never replace a circuit breaker on
an existing circuit with one of higher amper-
age without consulting a qualified electrician to
ensure compliance with wiring codes. If you are
unsure about the wiring codes in your area or
you plan to connect your machine to a shared
circuit, consult a qualified electrician.
110V Circuit .............................................15 Amp
Plug Type
The Model G0510Z is supplied with a 5-15 plug,
similar to Figure 3.

This machine must have a ground prong in
the plug to help ensure that it is grounded.
DO NOT remove ground prong from plug
to fit into a two-pronged outlet! If the plug
will not fit the outlet, have the proper outlet
installed by a qualified electrician.
Extension Cords
We do not recommend the use of extension
cords. If you find it absolutely necessary:
• Use at least a 14 gauge cord that does not
exceed 50 feet in length!
• The extension cord must also contain a
ground wire and plug pin.
• A qualified electrician MUST size cords over
50 feet long to prevent motor damage.

The Model G0510Z was carefully packed when it
left our warehouse. If you discover the machine
is damaged after you have signed for delivery,
please immediately call Customer Service at
[phone] for advice.
Save the containers and all packing materials for
possible inspection by the carrier or its agent.
Otherwise, filing a freight claim can be difficult.
When you are completely satisfied with the con-
dition of your shipment, you should inventory the
contents.

In the event that any non-proprietary parts are
missing (e.g. a nut or a washer), we would be
glad to replace them, or for the sake of expedi-
ency, replacements can be obtained at your local
hardware store.

Clean Up
The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxy
oil to protect them from corrosion during ship-
ment. Remove this protective coating with a sol-
vent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser such as
Grizzly’s G7895 Degreaser. To clean thoroughly,
some parts may need to be removed. For opti-
mum performance from your machine, make
sure you clean all moving parts or sliding
contact surfaces that are coated. Avoid chlo-
rine-based solvents as they may damage painted
surfaces should they come in contact. Always
follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using
any type of cleaning product.
Do not use gasoline or
other petroleum-based
solvents to clean with.
They have low flash
points which make them
extremely flammable.
A risk of explosion and
burning exists if these
products are used.
Do not smoke while using
solvents. A risk of explo-
sion or fire exists and may
result in serious personal
injury.
Many of the solvents
commonly used to clean
machinery can be toxic
when inhaled or ingest-
ed. Always work in well-
ventilated areas far from
potential ignition sources
when dealing with sol-
vents. Use care when dis-
posing of waste rags and
towels to be sure they do
not create fire or environ-
mental hazards.
Site Considerations
Working Clearances
Working clearances can be thought of as the
distances between machines and obstacles that
allow safe operation of every machine with-
out limitation. Consider existing and anticipated
machine needs, size of material to be processed
through each machine, and space for auxiliary
stands or work tables. Also consider the relative
position of each machine for efficient material
handling. Be sure to allow yourself sufficient room
to safely run your machines in any foreseeable
operation.
Lighting and Outlets
Lighting should be bright enough to eliminate
shadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuits
should be dedicated or large enough to handle
combined motor amp loads. Outlets should be
located near each machine so power or exten-
sion cords are not obstructing high-traffic areas.
Be sure to observe local electrical codes for prop-
er installation of new lighting, outlets or circuits.
Make your shop “child safe.”

To assemble the stand:
1. Lay one stand side on the ground and attach
the two cross braces with four of the carriage
bolts, washers, and hex nuts as shown in
Figure 6. DO NOT fully tighten the nuts and
bolts at this time.

2. Attach the remaining stand side to the other
end of the cross braces in the same manner
as step 1. The stand assembly should now
look like Figure 7.
3. Place the shaper table upside down on the
two 4x4 blocks, as shown in Figure 8. Make
sure the spindle DOES NOT touch the ground
or the weight of the shaper may damage the
spindle.
4. Place the stand assembly on the shaper and
attach it with the remaining eight carriage
bolts, washers and hex nuts, as shown in
Figure 8.
5. Have an assistant help you turn the shaper
unit rightside-up.
6. Level the shaper, then tighten all of the
assembly bolts on the stand.
Note: Sheet steel will often “spring” after it has
been fabricated at the factory, occasionally mak-
ing it difficult to line up precisely with other parts.
Do not be surprised if the stand requires a bit of
“persuasion” to fit together. On the other hand, if
the parts just do not seem to work together, try
switching parts around (such as cross braces).

Mounting and securing the fence assembly to
the table is easy, but proper setup also requires
checking both fence faces to make sure they are
straight when aligned. If the fences cannot be
aligned straight with each other, you will not get
accurate cuts.
To set up the fence assembly:
1. Place the fence assembly over the studs that
are already mounted to the shaper table.
2. Use the large diameter flat washers and star
knobs to tighten the fence assembly to the
table.
3. Mount the fence faces to the fence assembly
with the Phillips head screws and flat wash-
ers, as shown in Figure 9.
Note: Make sure that the Phillips head
screws are beyond the outer surface of the
fence faces.

To check the fences for being aligned straight
with each other:
1. Place the straightedge against the fence
faces and align them as close as possible.
2. Inspect the entire length of both fences for
gaps that indicate the fences are not in a
straight line with each other.
—If the fences are straight, then no further
adjustments are necessary.
—If the fences are not straight, then they
should be resurfaced on a jointer as one
unit. Refer to Truing the Fence on Page
33 for instructions on how to do this.

Safety Guard
The guard protects the operator from inad-
vertent contact with the cutter which could
cause serious personal injury. DO NOT
operate the shaper with the guard removed.
Always replace the guard before operation
if it has been removed for machine service
or maintenance.

The Model G0510Z features a clear acrylic safety
guard that is designed to help protect the opera-
tor from flying wood chips and accidental contact
with the cutter/router bit.
Once setup, the safety guard height can be
adjusted by loosening the star knob that secures
the mounting post. Use this safety guard as low
to the cutter as possible without interfering with
your work.
To attach the guard:
1. Insert the mounting post into the bracket that
is bolted to the back of the shaper table, and
tighten the star knob to lock the mounting
post in place.
2. Secure the attachment bar to the mounting
post with the hex bolts.

3. Attach the safety guard with the Phillips head
screws and hex nuts. The completed assem-
bly of the safety guard should now look like
Figure 10.

Spindle Preparation
To ensure your safety for the test run, you should
prepare the spindle by making sure it is tight and
by removing the spindle nut and rub collars that
were installed for shipping. A loose spindle or
loose rub collars may fly apart and cause serious
injury.
To prepare the spindle for the test run:
1. Place a wrench on the spindle flats at the top
of the spindle.
2. Place a wrench on the drawbar nut located
underneath the table (Figure 11) and make
sure the spindle is tight.

3. Remove the spindle nut and all the installed
rub collars.

Once assembly is complete, and your assembled
shaper looks like Figure 12, you are ready to test
run the machine.
Test Run
To test run the shaper:
1. Plug the shaper into the power source.
2. Press the START button, making sure that
your finger is poised on the STOP button,
just in case there is a problem.
—The shaper should run smoothly, with little
or no vibration or rubbing noises. If it does,
proceed to Step 3.
—If you hear or see anything wrong with the
shaper, turn it OFF, disconnect the power
and correct the problems before operating
the machine further.
3. Run the Model G0510Z for a short time.
If any problem develops, correct it before
attempting to use the machine.

Read through the entire manual carefully

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you
read books, trade magazines, or get formal
training to maximize the potential of your
shaper.
Shaper Cutters or
Router Bits?
Shaper Cutters
Pros—Shaper cutters are larger, more durable
and generally last longer than router bits. If you
plan on cutting many linear feet of a certain pro-
file, then shaper cutters are the best choice.
Cons—Shaper cutters are more expensive than
router bits and are generally larger, which makes
them less compatible for small projects.
The Model G0510Z is ready to use shaper cutters
when shipped. If you plan on using shaper cut-
ters with your shaper, skip to Page 18 and read
Installing Cutters.
Router Bits
Pros—Router bits are much cheaper than shaper
cutters and come in a wider range of profiles and
sizes. If you plan on making smaller projects that
do not require many linear feet of cutting, then
router bits are the best choice.
Cons—Router bits are not as durable as shaper
cutters, and because of their small size, they
lend themselves better to the faster speeds of a
router.
If you plan to use router bits in your shaper, you
must first convert the shaper to a router table.
