Original installation and operating instructions
These installation and operating instructions
describe Grundfos CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular
modules.
Sections 1-2 give the information necessary to be
able to install and start up the products in a safe way.
Sections 3-6 give important information about
operating the setup, as well as information about
fault finding and disposal of the product.

2. Installing the product

2.1 Security
Grundfos connected products must be behind a
firewall or connected to a private network.
If a firewall or private network is not in place, the
Grundfos product may be subject to a cyber-security
risk and becomes vulnerable to an attack or
compromise.
Follow the highly recommended configuration
requirements below. If in doubt, consult an IT
Infrastructure Specialist.
2.1.1 CIM 260, cellular
The CIM 260 modules are cellular-based modules
and require cellular connectivity through a private
Access Point Name (APN) to be securely connected
to the Internet. Any basic cellular connectivity
solution is not recommended, only private APNs are
recommended.
The private APN must be purchased from your
mobile network operator. The mobile network
operator will guide you through the setup process.

2.2 RF safety
The antenna used for the product in which the CIM
260 or CIM 280 is fitted must be installed to provide
a separation distance of at least 20 cm from persons
and must not be co-located or operated in
conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter.
Interference of other electronic equipment may occur
if the equipment is inadequately protected.
2.3 Antenna precautions
The combined gain of the cable-antenna solution
used for this product must not exceed 2.0 dBi (800,
900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz).
2.4 Radio frequency radiation exposure

This equipment complies with FCC and ISED
radiation exposure limits set forth for an uncontrolled
environment. This equipment must be installed and
operated with a minimum distance of 20 cm between
the radiator and your body.
This transmitter must not be co-located or operated
in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter.

2.5 Fitting a cellular antenna
The antenna for the CIM 260 or CIM 280 must be
connected to the module to establish connection to
the cellular network.
External antenna
See fig. 3.
Connect the antenna cable to the SMA connection
(pos. 1) of the CIM 260 or CIM 280. The antenna
must be installed outside the control cabinet in a
position with good reception conditions. If required
by the telecom company, connect an additional
antenna.

2.6 Inserting the SIM card
Before inserting the SIM card into the CIM 260 or
CIM 280, remove the PIN code, or set it to "4321".
Procedure
1. Insert the SIM card into a mobile phone.
2. Remove the PIN code from the SIM card, or set it
to "4321". See the manual of the mobile phone.
3. Insert the SIM card into the CIM 260 or CIM 280.

2.7 Connecting the battery and power
supply
These safety precautions must be observed:
• Only insert the approved Grundfos battery pack
(99465650).
• Never use this battery pack in other battery
chargers.
•Do not dismantle or modify the battery.
• Do not heat or incinerate the battery.
• Do not pierce, crush or cause mechanical
damage to the battery.
• Do not short circuit the battery.
• Do not allow the battery to get wet or be
immersed in water.
• Do not strike or throw the battery.
• For long periods of storage, the storage
temperature should be below +35 °C.
2.7.1 Connecting the battery
The CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular module can be
fitted with a lithium-ion battery, part number
99465650. It is secured by a velcro strap which
absorbs vibrations and makes it easier to replace the
battery. Connect the battery to the CIM 260 or CIM
280 as shown in fig. 5. See the CIU quick guide for
placement of the battery on the CIU cover.

2.7.2 Connecting the power supply
Switch on the power supply. The CIM 260 and CIM
280 are powered either by the Grundfos product in
which it is fitted or by the battery in case of a power
cut.
The LED1 is flashing yellow (searching for cellular
network). When the connection to the cellular
network has been established, the LED1 will pulsate
yellow (cellular network active). See fig. 7.
The LED2 is permanently green (internal
communication between the CIM 260 and the
Grundfos product is OK).
The CIM 260 is now ready for initialisation. See the
manual "CIM 260 SMS commands" and for
Dedicated Controls, see the manual with software
descriptions.
When installed from factory, the LED2 on CIM 280 is
permanently red until the product driver is installed.
See section 3.2 LEDs for more information.

If the battery is not connected, the user will
not receive any information in case of a

The battery will only be charged if the
battery temperature is within 0 °C to +45
°C.

3. Product introduction
3.1 Applications
The CIM 260 or CIM 280 cellular module (CIM =
Communication Interface Module) enable data
transmission between a cellular network and a
Grundfos product.
The CIM 260 communicates using Modbus TCP via
cellular data transmission to a SCADA system or
SMS communication to mobile phones.
The CIM 280 communicates via cellular network to
Grundfos iSolution Cloud (requires a Grundfos
contract).
In the following, "Grundfos product" means one or
more Grundfos products, depending on the actual
application.
The CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular module make it
possible to control and monitor a Grundfos product in
several ways:
• From a SCADA system via a data connection.
• From a SCADA system via a call-up connection.
• From a mobile phone via SMS messages.
See the manual "CIM 260 SMS commands".
• From Grundfos Remote Management or
Grundfos iSolution Cloud (GiC) where control
takes place via a central server. This is not
described in this booklet. See the installation and
operating instructions for Grundfos Remote
Management.
The CIM 260 or CIM 280 is supplied separately and
must be fitted in the product to be communicated
with or in a CIU unit (CIU = Communication Interface
Unit).
Retrofitting of the CIM 260 or CIM 280 is described
in the installation and operating instructions of the
Grundfos product.

3.2 LEDs
The CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular module have two
LEDs.
See fig. 1.
• Yellow and green status LED (LED1) for cellular
communication
• Red and green status LED (LED2) for internal
communication between the CIM 260 or CIM 280
and the Grundfos product.

LED2 status

4. Fault finding the product
Faults in a CIM 260 or CIM 280 cellular module can
be detected by observing the status of the two
communication LEDs. See the table below and
section 3.2 LEDs.

a) The CIM module does not
support the Grundfos product.
Contact the nearest Grundfos
company.
b) The CIM 280 is not
configured. The product driver
is not downloaded from
Grundfos Remote
Management (GRM) or
Grundfos iSolution Cloud
(GiC) yet. When the CIM 280
is switched on, the LED2 may
turn green for one minute
before it turns permanently
red.
Run the set-up process in GRM or
GiC. Contact the nearest Grundfos
company.
4. LED1 is flashing yellow. a) The SIM card has not been
inserted.
Insert the SIM card. See section
2.6 Inserting the SIM card.
b) The SIM card has not been
inserted correctly.
Insert the SIM card. See section

c) The PIN code of the SIM card
has not been removed or set
to 4321.
Remove the PIN code, or set it to
4321 with a mobile phone. See
section 2.6 Inserting the SIM card.
d) No connection to the cellular
network.
•Check the connection to the
antenna.
•Check the cellular coverage of
the area with for instance a
mobile phone.
• Experiment with the position of
the external antenna.
• In some cases, adding an
additional antenna to the
second SMA connector may
improve the signal. See fig. 3.
5. LED1 is pulsating yellow with
single pulse, but the CIM 260
cannot send or receive SMS
messages.
a) The CIM 260 has not been
initialised.
Initialise the CIM 260 with the
command INIT. See section
2.6 Inserting the SIM card in the
manual "CIM 260 SMS
commands".
