1. General information
Read this document before you install the
product. Installation and operation must
comply with local regulations and accepted
codes of good practice.
1.1 Hazard statements
The symbols and hazard statements below may
appear in Grundfos installation and operating
instructions, safety instructions and service
instructions.
DANGER
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, will result in death or serious
personal injury.
WARNING
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in death or
serious personal injury.
CAUTION
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in minor or
moderate personal injury.
The hazard statements are structured in the following
way:

• Action to avoid the hazard.
1.2 Notes
The symbols and notes below may appear in
Grundfos installation and operating instructions,
safety instructions and service instructions.
Observe these instructions for explosion-
proof products.
A blue or grey circle with a white graphical
symbol indicates that an action must be
taken.
A red or grey circle with a diagonal bar,
possibly with a black graphical symbol,
indicates that an action must not be taken
or must be stopped.
If these instructions are not observed, it
may result in malfunction or damage to the
equipment.
Tips and advice that make the work easier.

2. Product introduction
2.1 Applications
CIM 260 or CIM 280 cellular module (CIM =
Communication Interface Module) enable data
transmission between a cellular network and a
Grundfos product.
CIM 260 communicates using Modbus TCP via
cellular data transmission to a SCADA system or
SMS communication to mobile phones.
CIM 280 communicates via cellular network to the
related cloud, for example, Grundfos iSolutions
Cloud, (requires a Grundfos contract).
In the following, "Grundfos product" means one or
more Grundfos products, depending on the actual
application.
CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular module make it
possible to control and monitor a Grundfos product in
several ways:
• From a SCADA system via a data connection.
• From a mobile phone via SMS messages. See the
manual "CIM 260 SMS commands".
• From Grundfos iSolutions Cloud or the related
cloud where control takes place via a central
server. This is not described in this document.
CIM 260 or CIM 280 is supplied separately and must
be fitted in the product to be communicated with or in
a CIU unit (CIU = Communication Interface Unit).
Retrofitting of CIM 260 or CIM 280 is described in the
installation and operating instructions of the Grundfos
product.
If you want CIM 280 to connect to another
cloud than Grundfos iSolutions Cloud, for
example, Grundfos Remote Management,
it can take 3-4 minutes until the interface
reconnects at first communication process.

2.2 LEDs
CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular module have two
LEDs.
• Yellow and green status LED (LED1) for cellular
communication
• Red and green status LED (LED2) for internal
communication between CIM 260 or CIM 280 and
the Grundfos product.

Off CIM 260 has been switched off. CIM 280 has been switched off.
Flashing red.
No internal communication
between CIM 260 and the Grundfos

After commissioning, the LED2 will flash red if the
communication to the Grundfos product is lost.
Permanently red. CIM 260 does not support the
Grundfos product.
The product driver is not downloaded from Grundfos
Remote Management (GRM) or Grundfos iSolutions
Cloud (GiC) yet. When the CIM 280 is switched on, the
LED2 may turn green for one minute before it turns
permanently red.

3. Receiving the product
3.1 Inspecting the product
Before installing the product, do the following:
1. Check that the product is as ordered.
2. Check that no visible parts have been damaged.
3. If parts are damaged or missing, contact your
local Grundfos sales company.

4.1 Security
Grundfos connected products must be behind a
firewall or connected to a private network.
If a firewall or private network is not in place, the
Grundfos product may be subject to a cyber-security
risk and becomes vulnerable to an attack or
compromise.
Follow the highly recommended configuration
requirements below. If in doubt, consult an IT
Infrastructure Specialist.
4.1.1 CIM 260, cellular
The CIM 260 modules are cellular-based modules
and require cellular connectivity through a private
Access Point Name (APN) to be securely connected

to the Internet. Any basic cellular connectivity solution
is not recommended, only private APNs are
recommended.
The private APN must be purchased from your mobile
network operator. The mobile network operator will
guide you through the setup process.

environment. This equipment must be installed and
operated with a minimum distance of 20 cm (0.66
feet) between the radiator and your body.

4.5 EMC statements for USA
This equipment has been tested and found to comply
with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to
part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed
to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference in a residential installation. This
equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy and, if not installed and used in
accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. However, there
is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a
particular installation. If this equipment does cause
harmful interference to radio or television reception,
which can be determined by turning the equipment off
and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the
interference by one or more of the following
measures:
• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
• Increase the separation between the equipment
and receiver.
• Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit
different from that to which the receiver is
connected.
• Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV
technician for help.
5. Mechanical installation
5.1 Fitting a cellular antenna
The antenna for CIM 260 or CIM 280 must be
connected to the module to establish connection to
the cellular network.
Connect the antenna cable to the SMA connection
(pos. 1) of CIM 260 or CIM 280. The antenna must be
installed outside the control cabinet in a position with
good reception conditions. If required by the telecom
company, connect an additional antenna.

5.2 Inserting the SIM card
Before inserting the SIM card into CIM 260 or CIM
280, remove the PIN code, or set it to "4321".
1. Insert the SIM card into a mobile phone.
2. Remove the PIN code from the SIM card, or set it
to "4321". See the manual of the mobile phone.
3. For CIM 280, you must have a SIM
card subscription with international
SMS roaming activated.
Insert the SIM card into CIM 260 or CIM 280.
The slanted edge of the SIM card must
point downwards.

6.1 Connecting the battery and power
supply

qualified and trained experts.

‐The safety precautions listed below
must be observed carefully as
improper handling of the lithium-ion
battery may result in injury or damage
from electrolyte leakage, heating
ignition or explosion.
These safety precautions must be observed:
• Only insert the approved Grundfos battery pack
(99465650).
• Never use this battery pack in other battery
chargers.
• Do not dismantle or modify the battery.
• Do not heat or incinerate the battery.
• Do not pierce, crush or cause mechanical damage
to the battery.
• Do not short circuit the battery.
• Do not allow the battery to get wet or be
immersed in water.
• Do not strike or throw the battery.
• For long periods of storage, the storage
temperature should be below +35 °C.
6.2 Connecting the battery
The CIM 260 and CIM 280 cellular module can be
fitted with a lithium-ion battery, part number
99465650. It is secured by a velcro strap which
absorbs vibrations and makes it easier to replace the
battery. Connect the battery to CIM 260 or CIM 280
as shown below. See the CIU quick guide for
placement of the battery on the CIU cover.
If the battery is not connected, the user will
not receive any information in case of a
power cut.
