BACKGROUND
HNS has introduced a new PES indoor unit, the PES 5000 version 3, as pictured in figure 1. The PES 5000 version 3 is
functionally similar to prior PES 5000 products (with the minor restrictions that certain PLCs are not applicable to PES
5000 version 3, and certain software must be installed at the hub). This customer service bulletin provides installation and
service information for PES 5000 version 3. Note the following topics:

Improved Installation Strategy
HNS has received significant field feedback that installation cost and complexity should be reduced. The new PES 5000
version 3 has incorporated a variety of new features to help in accomplishing this long-term objective. As an example, the
new user interface includes a LCD with a five-button keypad used to aid commissioning and speed installation
procedures.
Other new installation improvements relate to the IFL cable and cable termination. The new PES 5000 version 3 uses an
“F”connector for its IFL interface rather the “N”connector used in previous PES 5000 versions. Over a phased
implementation period, the IFL type I and type III cables will utilize “F”connector kits and ultimately, the type I IFL
cable will be replaced with a less expensive, more easily terminated RG-6 cable.

As shown in figure 2 the PES 5000 version 3 indoor unit has an “F”Type IFL connector. In earlier versions this was an
“N”Type connector. There is presently a transition plan in place to migrate from “N”Type connectors on the IDU’s,
ODU’s and IFL Cables to “F”Type connectors. This migration will happen in three phases.

“F”to “N”Adapters
The “N”to “F”transition involves adapting the PES 5000 version 3 “F”Type connector on the back panel of the unit to
the existing “N”Type IFL cable connector kits for Type I and Type III cable. The PES 5000 version 3 includes the
proper adapters to convert its IFL “F”connector to an “N”(figure 4). No new installation materials are required. Table 2
gives the run lengths for these existing cable types. Figure 3 shows the phase 1 connections and cables.

ACTION REQUIRED
Install the PES 5000 version 3 indoor unit where so indicated by installation work order consistent with the following
information. Make the IFL connections according to the installation described in this CSB
IFL cable installation
As shown in figure 2, the PES 5000 version 3 indoor unit has an F-type connector for the IFL cable. The present PES
5000 Outdoor Units have an N-type connector. Use the adapter(s) included in the indoor unit packaging box to connect
the indoor unit to the IFL cable.
Port Level Conversion Module (PLC) Installation
A PLC is an optional daughter card that provides a specific interface function for ports 3 and 4 or provides the voice
function for voice port. As listed in table 8, the EIA-232 PLC part number 3000066-0002is approved and is directly
applicable for PES 5000 version 3 at this time.
Note: Do not install PLC part number 3000066-0001 in PES 5000 version 3. It does not have proper ESD protection
in PES 5000 version 3, but does have ESD protection provided by the host circuit card in PES 5000 versions 2 and earlier.

Perform the steps listed below to install a data PLC inside PES 5000 version 3.
STEP 1. Remove power from the PES 5000 version 3 indoor unit by unplugging the power cord.
STEP 2. Observe Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) precautions. Ground yourself, the PES 5000 version 3 chassis, your
tools and the bag containing the PLC.
STEP 3. Remove the cover/front panel assembly, as shown in figure 5 & 6 on page 6 & 7.
A) Remove the screw from the indentation in the bottom of the unit.
B) Place the unit on a flat sturdy surface. Apply some downward pressure on the top of the unit near the
sides about mid-way between the front and the rear in order to disengage the retaining flanges.
C) While applying downward pressure, carefully and slowly slide cover/front panel assembly
approximately two inches toward the front of the unit. CAUTION: Do not pull too hard on the chassis

top or it might abruptly slide toward the front and yank the ribbon cable, which connects the
motherboard to the front panel circuit board.
D) Tilt the cover/front panel assembly so the rear lifts away from the mother board/power supply chassis.
At this point, you may choose to prop the cover/front panel assembly up to provide access. Or you may
choose to disconnect the ribbon cable and completely remove the cover/front panel assembly.

STEP 4. If you are installing a data port PLC, orient the PLC so the cut corner is closest to the standoff post as shown in
figure 7. Gently position the PLC above the motherboard. Carefully check that the circuit card pins are
properly aligned with the sockets on the PLC. Then seat the PLC in position. Push the PLC down until the
plastic on pins stops it. When properly positioned, the bottom of the PLC is approximately one inch above the
motherboard.

STEP 5. Replace the PES 5000 version 3 chassis cover/front panel assembly. Apply power to the PES 5000
version 3 and verify operation of the PLC.

PES 5000 version 3 & Hub software
In order for the PES 5000 version 3 to operate at the remote, the Hub must have the proper software installed.
If the Hub is a release 7.D hub, it must have cluster-release 713.0277 or greater within the 7.D NNN.NNNN series. Hub
software prior to 7.D 713.0277 will not operate PES 5000 version 3 remotes. Check that the Hub has this cluster-release
before attempting to install a PES 5000 version 3 indoor unit at a remote site.
Note: At the time of this writing there may be release 8.0 Hub software in the field that will not operate PES 5000 version
3 remotes. Eventually, all release 8.0 software will support the PES 5000 version 3 remotes. The cluster-release number
for Hub software that will operate with PES 5000 version 3 is 800.0030 or greater within the 8.0.NNN.NNNN series.
If the Hub has the proper software (PES 5000 version 3 - RAM boot & user code) and all other conditions are correct,
your PES indoor unit should show the normal indications of figure 8. The normal indications are: POWER LED –has a
steady green glow showing the unit has power; STATUS LED –- has a steady green glow showing that the unit is
receiving a signal from the Hub, that transmit is enabled and that user traffic is enabled; the PC: indication is
BLANK/BLANK followed by a blinking dot; the IF: indication is BLANK/BLANK followed by a blinking dot; the
received signal strength relative to noise is maximized by refined antenna aiming and is greater than 5 dB (should be 9 dB
or greater in most cases with good weather).
The indications of improper Hub software are:
A) If the proper RAM boot code is absent, the remote will come up and the IF display will show codes 8/E. and
8/F. The remote will then reset and repeat this process until correct RAM boot code is installed.
B) If the Hub has the proper RAM boot code but does not have the PES 5000 version 3 compatible user code,
then the IF display will show 7/2., 7/4., and 7/1.. It will then reset. The Hub will show 36-1E reset reason.

ROM Version Identification
As shown in figure 9, the ROM is located at U534. The part number is 1028608-0001. On the chip this is marked as
1028 on one line, 608 on the next line and the rev. level, E, on the third line and checksum 980A on the fourth line. The –
0001 portion of the part number is not marked on the chip.
Table 4 lists the REM MEM codes for the PES 5000 version 3 ROM chip. As described in CSB 226, the Hub operator
may use the System Operator Console (SOC or VOC) and the listed REM MEM codes to determine the rev level of a
ROM at a distant site.
After improved ROMs are developed, you may be called upon to replace a ROM chip in PES 5000 version 3. If so,
perform the following steps:
STEP 1. Select a location to perform the replacement. If you have access to the PES 5000 version 3 before visiting the
customer site, it is generally recommended to replace the ROM at your facility (Field Service office or
installation subcontractor shop) rather than at the customer site, which can be quite cramped without adequate
work area.
STEP 2. Set up an anti-static mat on a firm level surface. Be sure to ground wrist strap to a known good source of
ground. NOTE: FAILURE TO USE PROPER ANTI-STATIC MEASURES, COULD SEVERELY
DAMAGE ROMs AS WELL AS CIRCUIT CARDS. Remove power from the unit. Remove the chassis
cover/front panel as described in steps 1 thru 3 on page 5 and as shown in figure 5 and 6.
STEP 3. Note the location of the ROM as shown in figure 9: For the plastic leadless chip carrier (PLCC) integrated
circuit, use an appropriate extraction tool (such as Methode stock number CT2012, which HNS supplies as
HNS P/N 9004284-0134 or McKenzie part number TOL PLCC-XT-2) to remove the ROM to be replaced.
Failure to use an appropriate extraction tool could damage the socket. Spread the tool to fit the socket slots.
Insert the tongs in the socket slots. Squeeze the tool to lift PLCC IC. Do not try to pull out PLCC. Let the
tool action lift the PLCC IC
STEP 4. Carefully install the replacement ROM in the socket observing the correct orientation of the cut corner and the
beveled edge of the IC.
STEP 5. Discard the ROM that you have removed. It cannot be reprogrammed. It is a one-time Electrically
Programmable Read Only Memory.
STEP 6. Replace the cover/front panel. Reattach cables. Restore power. Return to the standard installation
procedures. Verify proper operation of the unit.

Using Diagnose Mode
To run diagnose mode, first remove power from the PES indoor unit and DISCONNECT THE IFL CABLE FROM
THE REAR OF THE PES 5000 VERSION 3. Note that the IFL cable has to be disconnected in order to run the
diagnostic IFL loopback test successfully.
Connect a site commissioning computer to the PES 5000 version 3 service connector marked MAINTENANCE. Apply
power to the site commissioning computer and the PES indoor unit. Select 2 for PES Model X000 when the screen
displays:

At the main menu, enter SWITCH <ENTER> to select the SWITCH function. Use the < key to move the X under DIAG
so the display shows:

Hit <ENT> to exit.
Exit the switch function. The PES 5000 resets, performs self-tests and begins a series of diagnose mode tests.
During DIAGNOSE mode the LCD display shows the words “DIAG Mode”and a code number.
DIAG Mode
NN/SS Pass 0001
Where NN is the test number in table 5 and SS is the sub-test number in table 10. Diagnose mode progresses thru the tests
in the order listed in table 5. When DIAGNOSE mode starts, the status LED (figure 8 on page 9) stops glowing.
Within approximately four minutes, the diagnose mode test should complete successfully as indicated by changes in the
LCD display. The unit returns to NORMAL mode. The LCD display returns to giving the PC: and IF: codes in the
locations shown in figure 8 on page 9. Remove power from the unit and re-attach the IFL cable. Re-apply power and
verify normal operation
If DIAGNOSE mode fails, the status LED glows with a red color and the number of the test that failed is shown in the
LCD display. Table 10 lists the numbers and names of these tests. When the unit fails, it can only be set back to normal
by pressing the SELECT button on the front panel. If DIAGNOSE mode fails, replace the PES 5000 version 3 indoor
unit.
Note that DIAGNOSE mode does not test user ports 3 and 4. If DIAGNOSE mode passes yet there are problems on ports
3 or 4, replace the PLC.
NOTE: As of this writing, the PES 5000 version 3 is not capable of doing Remote Field Diagnostics (RFD) as
described in CSB 201A.

Installing PES 5000 version 3 includes setting Inroute 32 to F7FF
PES 5000 version 3, in a manner similar to other recent PES products, can operate in conjunction with disaster recovery
software at the Hub. This disaster recovery software aids the remotes with repointing in the event of a satellite failure by
allowing the remote indoor unit to display an antenna pointing voltage. When disaster recovery software is present at the
Hub, it is necessary to enter inroute 32 as F7FF in order to conduct ranging without displaying the antenna pointing
voltage on the indoor unit. When disaster recovery software is not present at the Hub, entering inroute 32 as F7FF has no
effect. Therefore, during installation always enter inroute 32 as F7FF.
Figure 10 summarizes the installation process for PES 5000 version 3. The PC display 5/J. lasts for approximately 3 to 4
seconds and signifies that Hub has disaster recovery software and that inroute 32 has been properly entered as F7FF.
Refer to CSB 219 for additional information regarding site commissioning with disaster recovery software at the Hub.

Placing PES 5000 version 3 in AUTO COM mode
The PES 5000 version 3 does not have an AUTO COM push-button as prior PES 5000 products do. To place the unit in
AUTO COM mode, simultaneously press the left-arrow, up-arrow, and SELECT keys. The effect of AUTO-COM mode
depends on whether the network for this remote is set for disaster recovery or not.
If the network is set for disaster recovery, placing the indoor unit in AUTO COM mode causes it to display an antenna
pointing voltage. If the primary satellite has been lost, on-site personnel can (if they so elect) take steps to establish
communications on an alternate satellite. They will need to be informed of the name and location of the alternate satellite.
They will also need to be informed of the antenna pointing angles to the alternate satellite. In a disaster recovery
situation, HNS plans on posting delta azimuth, elevation, and polarization values on the internet website:

On-site personnel could then adjust the antenna to the alternate satellite. Then a two person team could refine the antenna
aiming with one person observing the antenna pointing voltage on the indoor unit and communicating with the other
person at the antenna. This communication could be by talking out the window, via walkie-talkies, or via cellular phone.
After the antenna pointing voltage has been minimized below 5.0 volts, the on-site personnel would simultaneously press
the left-arrow, up-arrow, and SELECT keys again. This action will cause the remote to begin ranging at the next
opportunity (could be a significant delay as many remotes will be attempting to range). The PC display will be
3/something dot during ranging. After ranging successfully completes, the remote automatically switches to normal
mode. For more information regarding disaster recovery, refer to ISBN Network Disaster Recovery Operations Guide

If the network is not set for disaster recovery, the remote reboots and goes into autocommissioning and starts ranging if
the Hub is set for AC Remote Ranging on the INRTDEF screen. Simultaneously pressing those keys a second time
causes the remote to reboot and return to normal mode.

PES 5000 version 3 Replaceable Parts
Usually the PES 5000 version 3 is replaced as an entire unit. However, the power supply and the PLC are replaceable
parts. The PLC part numbers are listed in table 3 on page 5. The power supply part number is 1027114-0001. Normally,
the PES 5000 version 3 should be replaced with a PES 5000 version 3.

Multicolor STATUS Led
The STATUS LED, shown in figure 8 on page 9, provides a multicolor indication. During normal operation the STATUS
LED should show a steady green glow indicating that the PES is receiving the correct signal from the Hub, that transmit is
enabled and that user traffic is enabled.
Whenever the indoor unit power is first applied, the PES 5000 version 3 Indoor Unit (IDU) conducts a series of self-tests,
followed by re-establishment of communications with the hub. During this time, the multicolor STATUS LED indicates
progress as follows:
