vi Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI Adapter Installation and User's Handbook
Chapter 1. Introduction
Thank you for selecting the IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI
Adapter. This adapter is a high-performance, direct memory access
(DMA) bus master host adapter designed for high-end systems. The
performance is derived from the ISP2100 chip, making this PCI
adapter a leading-edge host adapter. The ISP2100 combines a
powerful RISC processor, a fibre protocol module (FPM) with
gigabit transceivers, and a 64-bit peripheral component interconnect
(PCI) local bus interface in a single-chip solution. The Netfinity
Fibre Channel PCI Adapter supports all Fibre Channel (FC)
peripherals that support private loop direct attach (PLDA) and
fabric loop attach (FLA). Installation of the Netfinity Fibre Channel
PCI Adapter is quick and easy.
What is Fibre Channel?
Fibre channel technology is outlined in the Information Systems -
Fibre Channel Protocol for SCSI (small computer system interface -
FCP) standard, revision 12, 30 May 1995. Fibre Channel is a
high-speed data transport technology used for mass storage and
networking. It connects mainframes, super computers, workstations,
storage devices, and servers. Using a Fibre Channel arbitrated loop
(FC-AL), 126 devices can be supported, compared to 15 devices with
Ultra SCSI.
Fibre Channel supports data transfer rates of 100 MB per second,
which is more than twice that of Ultra SCSI (40 MB per second). A
multimode optical interface is used for distances up to 500 meters.
With increased connectivity and performance, Fibre Channel is the
technology preferred and used by system designers.
Fibre Channel Adapter Features

Chapter 2. Installing the Adapter
This chapter describes the steps you need to follow before and
during the installation of the Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI Adapter.
Preinstallation Procedures
Before you begin
Read “Handling Static-Sensitive Devices.”
Read “What You Need for Installation” on page 4.
Handling Static-Sensitive Devices
Static electricity, though harmless to you, can seriously damage
adapter components or options.
Note: When you are adding an internal option, do not open the
static-protective package containing the option until you are
instructed to do so.
When you handle options and other adapter components, take these
precautions to avoid damage from static electricity:
Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to
build up around you.
Always handle components carefully. Never touch any exposed
circuitry.
Prevent others from touching components.
When you are installing a new option, touch the static-protective
package containing the option to a metal expansion-slot screw
or other unpainted metal surface on the adapter for at least two
seconds. (This reduces static electricity from the package and
from your body.)
When possible, remove the option and install it directly into the
adapter without setting the option down. When this is not
possible, place the static-protective package that the option
comes in on a smooth, level surface and place the option on it.
Do not place the option on the adapter's covers or any metal
surface.

What You Need for Installation
Before you install the Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI Adapter in your
computer, you need the following:
A screwdriver (usually a Phillips #1)
An SC-style duplex cable for the QLA2100F adapter
Adapter Layouts
The following figure identifies the adapter components referenced
throughout this chapter.
J1 ISP2100
Installation Procedures
Attention: To avoid damage to your fibre optic cables, follow
these guidelines:
Do not route the cable along a folding cable management arm.
When attaching to a device on slides, leave enough slack in the
cable so that it does not bend to a radius smaller than 3 inches
when extended or become pinched when retracted.
Route the cable away from places where it can be snagged by
other devices in the rack.
Do not over tighten the cable ties or bend the cables to a radius
smaller than 3 inches.
4Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI Adapter Installation and User's Handbook
Do not put excess weight on the cable at the connection point
and be sure it is well supported.
Follow these steps to install the Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI
Adapter in your PC:
1. Check the system board and make any configuration changes
necessary to accommodate the Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI
Adapter if your system requires it.
2. Turn off the peripheral devices, then the computer.
3. Disconnect the power cords.
4. Remove the computer cover, saving the screws.
5. Choose any PCI bus slot that supports 32 or 64-bit adapters.
The adapter can be installed in a 64-bit PCI slot if one is
available. If a 64-bit slot is not available, then a 32-bit PCI slot
can be used.
6. Line up the adapter with the expansion slot. Carefully press the
adapter into the slot until it seats firmly.
7. Secure the adapter in place.
8. Connect one end of the fiber cable from the devices to the J1
connector on the adapter.
9. Carefully reinstall the computer cover and secure it.
10. Connect the power cables.
11. Power up all external FC devices; then, power up the PC and
observe the monitor. The BIOS lists all FC devices attached to
the PCI adapter,

If the information displayed on your monitor is correct (all installed
devices are listed) you have successfully installed the Netfinity Fibre
Channel PCI Adapter in your computer.
See the Netfinity Fibre Channel PCI Adapter Software Installation Guide
for detailed instructions on how to install the device drivers.
If the information displayed is not correct and you have checked the
adapter configuration, see Chapter 3, “Troubleshooting” on page 7

Chapter 3. Troubleshooting
There are three basic types of installation problems that can cause
your adapter to function incorrectly: hardware problems, system
configuration problems, and Fibre Channel problems. If you are
having problems, refer to this chapter and review the itemized lists
to help you determine why your adapter is not functioning.
Hardware Problems
The following is an itemized list to help you determine if your
installation problem is caused by the hardware:
Are all of the adapters installed securely in the computer?
Are all of the cables connected securely to the correct
connectors? Be sure that the SC connectors that attach from the
J1 connector on the adapter to the device are connected
correctly.
Is the adapter installed correctly in the expansion slot? Is it
seated firmly in the slot?
Are all peripheral devices properly powered up? See “Scan
Fibre Channel Devices” on page 24 for information about
displaying attached devices.
System Configuration Problems
To find out if your installation problem was caused by system
configuration, check your system board to make sure it is
configured properly (see “Installation Procedures” on page 4).
Fibre Channel Problems
To verify if your installation problem is caused by the Fibre
Channel, determine if all of the FC devices were powered up before
you powered up the server.

Refer to the IBM Statement of Limited Warranty for a full
explanation of IBM's warranty terms.
Before You Call for Service
Many computer problems can be solved without outside assistance,
by using the online help or by looking in the online or printed
documentation that comes with your computer or software. Also,
be sure to read the information in any README files that come
with your software.
Most computers, operating systems, and application programs come
with documentation that contains troubleshooting procedures and
explanations of error messages. The documentation that comes with
your computer also contains information about the diagnostic tests
you can perform.
If you receive a POST error code when you turn on your computer,
refer to the POST error-message charts in your hardware
documentation. If you do not receive a POST error code, but
suspect a hardware problem, refer to the troubleshooting
information in your hardware documentation or run the diagnostic
tests.
If you suspect a software problem, consult the documentation
(including README files) for the operating system or application
program.
Getting Customer Support and Service
Purchasing an IBM PC hardware product entitles you to standard
help and support during the warranty period. If you need
additional support and services, a wide variety of extended services
are available for purchase that address almost any need.
Using Electronic Support Services
If you have a modem, you can get help from several popular
services. Bulletin boards and online information services provide
assistance through question-and-answer message areas, live chat
rooms, searchable databases, and more.
