GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The CS-1720 isa dual-traceprogrammableoscilloscope,
with upto62mainprogrammefunctionssettingsprogram-
mable beforehand.With such prior programming,great
energy savings arepossibleinthemanufacturing process,
as theoscilloscopecanbeoperated with simplekeycon-
trols. In addition totheprogrammedoperation,itispossible
tousethe CS-1 720asa normalmanuallycontrolledscope
byswitchingitovertothe FREE position.Thefunctionofthe
oscilloscope isfurtherincreased with optional accessory
units: theprobeselector,whichgives20possiblesignal
channels; thememorypack,whichcantransferandretain
theprogrammecontents;andtheprinterwhichcanproduce
a hardcopyoftheprogrammedata.Remotecontroltest
fixtureoftheproductionline,andcomputercontrolare also
possible.
FEATURES
• Themicroprocessor:programmes with a maximumof
62 stepscanbestoredintheoscilloscopememory.
• Programmingandwaveformmeasuringconditionsare
easily programmedbypanelcontrol with one-touchkey
operations.
• Parts oftheprogrammecanbe easily correctedusing
theclearlylaidoutfunctioncontrolpanel.
• A maximumof62steps (00-61) canbedirectlyset
with thekeyboard,andsequentiallyset with the
UP/DOWN keys.
• Theprogrammecontentshavea batterypoweredback-
up system, andareabletoberetainedinthememoryfor
a longtime,even though the POWER switchisoff.
• One-touchoperationconvertstheoscilloscopetomanual
control,whenitfunctionsasa normaloscilloscope.
• Presettingoffourstart(A,B,C,D)andstopstepsis

-NOTE
Before usingtheoscilloscope CS-1 720,checkthe
powersupplyvoltage,andmakesurethatthe
voltageselectorswitchiscorrectlysettothecor-
respondingvoltage.Ifthecontrolisincorrectlyset,
damagetotheelectriccircuitswilloccur,socheck
carefully.Aftercheckingthatthepowersupply
voltageandthevoltageselectorswitchcorrespond,
connectthe CS-1 720oscilloscopetoa suitable
socket usingtheACpowercord.
1) Donotswitchthepowerswitchonandoffrapidlyin
succession, asthismay cause ittomalfunction.Allow
atleast3 seconds betweenswitchingonandswitch-
ingoff.
2) Whenconnectingordisconnectinganyoftheoptional
accessories, thepowermustbeOFF.
3) Avoidusingthe CS-1 720underthe following condi-
tions:
a) Indirectsunlight.
b) Ina room with hightemperatureandhumidity.
c) Ina roomaffectedbyvibration from nearby
machinery.
d) Nearanyhighvoltageinstrument,orone with a
strongmagneticfield.
4) Ensure thatthevoltageateach input terminaldoesnot
exceed themaximumrating.

a stationaryspotdisplayedonthe screen.
7) The CS-1 720 uses a backupbatterysystemforthepro-
grammedata.Whenthebatterylevelis getting low,the
STEP LEDwillflashwhenthepowerisswitchedon.In
thisevent,replacethebatteries,referringtothe
appropriatesectioninthemaintenanceinstructions.
8) Toavoidpossibleelectricshocks,ensuretheearth
terminalisproperlyconnected.(See front panel
(16) forexplanationandinstructions)
9) Besurethatnoobjectsareallowedtorestonthetop
ofthe unit orthatcoolingventsarenotblocked,since
thiswill cause anunduetemperature rise.
10) Beforeremovingthe case, besureto turn offthe
power. Since the CS-1 720makesuseofhighvoltage
circuitry,ifremovingthe case, refertothe
"MAINTENANCE" forremovingthe case.

14) Inordertoobtainaccuratemeasurements,itismost
important tocalibratetheprobecorrectlybeforeusing
theoscilloscope. First, connecttheprobetothechan-
neltobe used, andconnectthetipoftheprobetothe
CAL terminalonthe front panel.Adjusttheprobetrim-
merpottogetthepropersquarewaveformontheCRT
screen. WhenconnectingtheprobetotheCALter-
minal, besurealwaystoconnectittogether with the
GND terminal.WhentheGNDterminalisinanopen
condition,signalnoisewillaccompanythewaveform.

waveform.Theverticalsensitivityiscalibratedat
GAIN CALposition.Whentheoscilloscopeisbeingus-
edasanX-Yscope,this control serves asthe Y-axis
control.
(2) GAIN PRESET
Verticalattenuationadjusterandpresetselector;
change-overof4 presetrangesandCAL,setbythe
verticalattenuationadjustment control (29). This
selectoriscalibratedintheCALposition.InX-Yscope
this control isthe Y-axis presetselector.

1) Turnthe POWER switch(12)clockwise,andthepower

When CHOP isselectedonverticalMODE,CH1and
CH2 willbeindicatedbychopping,eachsweep.Asthe
triggersignalbecomesthe CHOP change-oversignalin
thismode,selectanappropriatesettingfor SOURCE
(20), except VERT MODE. These twowaveformshave
thesametime base. WhenADDisselectedonthever-
ticalMODE,thewaveformonthescreenbecomesa
compositealgebraicsumofCH1andCH2insingle
trace. IfCH2INVisthenselectedinthiscondition,the
waveformisthealgebraicdifferencebetweenCH1and
CH2 (CH1- CH2).When VOLTS/DIV issetthesame
for both channels,thesensitivityhasthatvalue.

Select SEPoftheverticalMODE,and.setCH1orCH2.In
thissetting,the input signalswillbeindicatedbyalternate
sweepinginmainandsubmode with dualtracefunction.In
the case ofCH1beingselected,theCH1signalisthemain

besetinupto4 settings(A,B,C,D).Followingthe
programmed STEP number,stepscanthenbesetupatran-
domcontinuouslybetween00— 61. This combinationis
set from theA toD keys, andonceselected,the
oscilloscopewillbeinthe READ conditionatthestartstep.
The A,B,C,D programmeispreset,andremainssetwhen
thepowerisOFF,beingindicatedbytheappropriate LEDs
whenpowerisonceagainswitchedon.
6) SCAN
In READ condition, SCAN operationadvancesthesteps
onebyone with a one-secondintervalbetweensteps until
theEND STEP isreached,whenitwillreturntothe START
STEP andstopin READ. HoweverifnoEND STEP issetor
ifthe SCAN keyispushedbeyondtheEND STEP setting,
thestepswillbeadvanced until 61,afterwhichitwill
returntothe START STEP andstop.
Pause action: Pause in SCAN actionisachievedby press-
ingthe RESET key.Ifthe SCAN keyisagainpressed,
scanning willresume.
Cancellation: Ifthe RESET keyispressedtwicein succes-
sion, the SCAN actionwillbecancelled,andthe
CS-1 720willreturntothe START STEP, inreadcon-
dition.

7) PRINT
Operates theprinter, TP-1 724,andtheprogrammedata
are printedout.Printingisdone from thestepindicatedand
continues until step61,when printing willstopandthe
CS-1 720willreturntothe START STEP inthestepse-
quence.
Pause action: Pause of printing actionisachievedby press-
ingthe RESET keyonce.Theprinterwill print uptothe
8 blockofthatstep,andstop.Pressingagainthe
PRNT keywillresume printing from the following step.
Cancellation: Cancelling printing isdonebypressing
RESET keytwicein succession, whenthe CS-1 720
willreturntothe START STEP ofthestepsequence,
and printing willstop.
8) FREE
Allprogrammedfunctionsarecancelled,andthe CS-1 720
becomes a normaloscilloscope with manualcontrol.At
thistime, FREE canbecancelledbypressing RESET.
9) EXT
TheSTEP numbercanbecontrolledbytheexternalBCD
signal, connectedtoEXTI/O.EXTactionisonlypossible
under READ condition,whenthe STEP SEQUENCE LEDis
off.Whentheexternalsignalisdisconnected,stepse-
quence 00isindicated.TocancelEXTactionpress RESET.

During SCAN, PRNT, FREE, andEXTaction,all keys
except RESET arecancelledandinoperable.
10) SAVE
Transfers theRAMprogrammedatainthememoryofthe
CS-1 720tothememorypackMT-1725. This transferis
effected without changingtheRAMcontentsofthe
CS-1 720internalmemory.Whendatatransferisfinished,
a buzzerwillsoundandthe READ or WRITE LEDwillflash
once.
11)LOAD
Transfers thecontentsofthememorypackMT-1725to
theinternalRAMofthe CS-1 720, without alteringthe
memorypackcontents.Whenthetransferisfinished,the
buzzer soundsandthe READ or WRITE LEDwillflashasin
SAVE above.
Whenthememorypackisnotconnected,LOADwillnot
operatetoprotectthedatainthememory.

dicatedinonefigure. Panel controloperationispossiblein
theonlyblockwhichhasbeensetupandcanbesetupfor
programming.Allotherblocksaresetin READ state,
thereforepanelcontroloperationisimpossible.

WhenSTOkeyispressed,part writing ofonlythe
blockpresetwillbedone, without alteringtherest
oftheblocks.
Ifitisnecessarytochangetheblocknumbertobe
partwritten,pressthedesiredkeybeforepressing
theSTOkey.Afterpart writing iscompleted,the
stepnumberisadvancedbyone,andissoin-
dicated. TheoscilloscopewillbeinALLWRTstate.
17) STO
The memoryactivationkey.Itisusedforall writing
actions, ALLWRT, PART WRT, START STEP, END STEP.
ALL WRT:Theprogrammesettingofeachpanelswitchin
all blocksisstoredasdata,advancingthestepnumber
byone.
PART-WRT: Each panelswitchprogrammesettingin
designatedblockonly,isstoredasdata,advancing
stepnumberbyone.
STRT/END: Sets upstartstepsandendstepsofthe
programmeandwritesthem.

2. PROGRAMME OPERATION
Referring tothe section on manualoscilloscopeoperation,
switch onthe powerswitch. Check ifanyofthe STEP
(26),READ (27) LEDs andoneofthe STEP SEQUENCE
LEDs arelitornot. With the green READ LEDlit,the
oscilloscope is ready for operation.
NOTE 1
If atthe beginning of operation the firststagepro-
grammesetting hasnot beendone, allA,B,G,D
LEDs maybelitandthe buzzer maybe sounding. In
this case, reset A,B,C,D or push the RESET key.If
thebuzzercontinues to sound, turn powerOFF and
check each externalcableconnectionbeforeswitch-
ing on again.
When the oscilloscope is ready for operation, press the
RESET key.
I)UP/DOWNOperation for STEP
Continuous STEP UP
Witn each operation oftheUPkey, STEP is advanced one
by one. When END STEP is reached, it returns tothe
START STEP. IftheUPkeyis pushedafter theEND STEP
setting, the stepswill be advanced until step 61, after
which it willreturn to START STEP. IftheUPkeyis pressed
from a numberbelow START STEP, the stepswill bead-
vanced till END STEP, and willthenreturn to START STEP.
Continuous STEP DOWN
Each operation ofthe DOWN key will reverse the step
numbers indicated byone, until the START STEP is reach-
ed, and operationwillstop. Ifthe DOWN keyis pressed ata
numberbelow the preset START STEP, the stepswill go
down to00, then to START STEP and operationwillstop.
IfDOWN is keyedbeyond END STEP presetnumber,
normal decrease of stepsoccurs till START STEP, then
operationwillstop.
H) START STEP, END STEP Setting
a)STEPSEQUENCE setting
Select oneofthe keys from A toD and push. The cor-
respondingLEDwill light up.
b) START STEP setting
Using the number keys, indicate inthe window the number
of the requiredstep. Push START andSTOkeyin that
order,then the START STEP issetup.
c) END STEP setting
Using the number keys, indicate inthe window the required
number. Push ENDandSTO keys in thatorder,,and the
END STEP issetup.Nowthe programmeextent,hasbeen
set upand recorded inthe memory.Using the same
procedure as above,threeothersequence canbesetup.
HI) START - END STEP Reading out
a) STEPSEQUENCE selection
From A toD keys select thekeytobe read, and push it.At
thistime the START STEP number is indicated inthe STEP
(26) window, andthe oscilloscopewill beinthe READ
state.
b) START STEP, END STEP reading
By pushing START and READ keys in thatorder,startstep
reading is possible;similarly, ifENDand READ keys are
pushed in thatorder, end stepreading canbe carried out.
IV) PROGRAMME WritingOperation
(1) ALL WRITE
a) STEP Numbersetting
Set up STEP number for STEP (26) usingnumber keys
orUP/DOWN key.
b)ALLWRITEsetting
When ALL-WRT keyis pushed, the green READ LED
will goout,andthered WRITE LED will light. In this
setting, paneloperation ofthe oscilloscope is possible.
c) Writing in
By pushing STOkey,the setting of everycontrol is
stored into the memory. The STEP number is advanced
by onetothe nextstep, andthe oscilloscope is still in
the WRITE condition.
d)Continuouswriting in
Under setting (c) above, if each switch issetupand
the STOkey operated in thatorder, the programme
can be continuouslywritten in.
(2) PART WRITING in
a)STEP numbersetting
Set upasforALLWRT above.
b) PART WRITING in setting
By pushing PART WRT key,the STEP LED (26) will go
out, andthe green andred LEDs of READ and WRITE
will light up;the oscilloscope isnowin PART WRTcon-
dition. Setupthe desiredblocknumberfrom 1 to.8,
using the number keys. The numberwill be indicated in
the STEP window ofthe front panel. Panel operation is
onlypossible forthe presetblock, andthe setting for
each controlwill be written in.All otherblocks arein
READ condition, and paneloperationwiththem isnot-
possible.
c) Writing in
By pushingSTO key only the memory ofthe contents
of thesetup block canbe changed. The STEP number
is advanced byonetothe nextstep, andthe CS-1 720

VI)ManualOperationofCS-1720 Oscilloscope
When FREE keyis pressed, allprogrammedfunctionsare
cancelled andmanualoperationofthe CS-1720 ispossible
as foranynormaloscilloscope.The LEDs for STEP, READ,
WRITE, and STEP SEQUENCE arealloff.All keys except
RESET cannotbe used. Bypushingthe RESET key, FREE
actioniscancelled.
VII)AutomaticStepTransferOperation
In READ condition,pushingthe SCAN keyautomatically
advances the STEP settingfromtheindicatedstepthrough
totheend,witha periodofaboutonesecondbetween
steps. Whentheendstepisreached,the CS-1720
automaticallyreturnstothe START STEP andstops.
During SCAN operation,all keys except RESET are
inoperable.
Pause action:During SCAN operation,pushingthe RESET
key willtemporarilystoptheaction.Tocontinue, press
the RESET keyonceagain.
Cancellation: The SCAN operationcanbestoppedifthe
RESET keyispressedtwicein succession. Insucha
case, the CS-1 720willreturntothe START STEP and
stops.
