Circuit Description
1 t> Summary
Whenreading the following descriptions,refer to
theblockdiagram{Fig. 1Jand the schematicdiagram.
The sine-wavesignalgenerated bythe Wienbridge
oscillatorcircuit isfed through the WAVE FORM select-
torswitch setatthe '"v" position tothe OUTPUT con-
trol, by means of which itis adjusted toany desired
voltage.
Sf the WAVE FORM switch IsIn the"_n_"position, the
sine-wave signal Is shaped into the squarewave andthe
voltage is alsoadjusted bythe OUTPUT control.
The signalvoltagethusadjusted is applied tothe
output circuit,where Its impedance is appropriately
converted, and thendelivered through an output attenu-
ator tothe output terminal. The attenuatorprovides
selectable attenuations of GdB though -50dB in10dB
steps at 600n of output impedance.
2. WiertBredgeOscillatorCircuit
TheWiPfi bridgeoscillatorcircuitelementsconsist
of the resistanceelements,which maybe switchedover
for 5 ranges bythe FREQ. RANGE switch, andthe
variablecapacitorcontrolled bythe FREQUENCY dial.
These elementsprovidemeans to vary the oscillating
frequency continuouslyover 10 times its frequency on
onerange,thusdetermining any desiredfrequency
within the entirefrequencyrange from 10Hz to 1MHz.
The amplifiercircuit forthe oscillatorcircuit is

3, SquareWaveShapingCircuit
The squarewaveshapingcircuit isa >khmidt-trigger
circuit in which the sinewavesignal from the oscillator
circuit is shaped into a square wave. Itis composed ofan
emittercoupledSchmidt-triggercircuit anda buffer
amplifier,thus providing sufficientrising and falling
characteristics.
4., Output Circuit
The output circuitconverts the impedance of signal
from the OUTPUT control and feeds the signal tothe
output attenuator ata low impedance. Itisa SEPP-OCL
circuitemployingcomplementarytransistors to provide
sufficiently low output impedancecharacteristicsover
therange from DCto1MHz.

5. Output Attenuator
The 6-position output attenuatorselectsattenuations
ofOdBto-50dBm 10dBsteps.AttheOdBposition
with the OUTPUT controlturned fully clockwise,the
output voltage(sinewaveatno-loadtime)is more than
7V rms.
The output impedanceIsratedfor600aandtheat-
tenuationaccuracyisashighas±1.OdBata 800oload.

The powersupplycircuitispoweredbyAC
100V, 120Vor220V)anddeliversDC±22Vsufficiently
stabilizedbylargecapacitysmoothingcapacitors

OperatingInstructions
1. Start-up
First checkthatthefuse(12)andthepowervoltage
selector (14)areinthenormalpositions,thenconnect
thesuppliedACpowercordtoyourACoutlet. Press
thepowerswitch(2)andthe pilot lamp(1)will light
indicatingthattheunitisreadyforoperation.Allow
2 or3 minutesfortheunittowarmupsothatitis
stabilized.
2.WaveformSelection
Press the WAVE FORM switch(5)tothe"Vposi-
tion toobtainsine waves. Press theswitchtothe"XL"
positionforsquare waves.
3. FrequencySelection
First setthe FREQ.RANGE switch(6)tothedesired
range, thensetthefrequencydial(8)sothatthedial
pointer(10)indicatesyourfrequency.
Example: Supposeyouwanttoselecta frequency
of1.5kHz,thenproceedasfollows:
1. Set FREQ RANGE switch(6)tox 100.
2. Byusingthefrequencydial,setthe
dialpointer(10)ro"15"onthedial
scale.
The frequencythusselectedis:
15 x 100= 1500(Hz)= 1.5(kHz)
4. AdjustmentofOutputVoltage
The output voltagefrom OUTPUT terminal(4),be
itsinewaveorsquare wave, canbecontinuouslyvaried
by AMPLITUDE (7)andsteppeddownby ATTENUA-
TOR (3).
Example: Toadjust output voltageto10mVrms,
proceedasfollows:
1. Connecta voltmetercapableof meas-
uringAC1 V rmsto OUTPUT
terminal(4).
2. Set ATTENUATOR (3)toOdBand
thenadjust AMPLITUDE (7) until the
voltmeterindicates1Vrms.A voltage
of1Vrmswillappearat OUTPUT
terminal(4).
3. Set ATTENUATOR (3)to -40dB.
The voltmeterindicatesabout0V,
whilea voltageof10mVrmsappears
at OUTPUT terminal(4).
5. UseofSynchronizingInputTerminal
By applyinganexternalsinewavesignalto SYNC ter-
minal(11),theoscillatingfrequencyof AG-203 canbe
synchronized totheexternalsignal.Thesynchronizing
range isincreasedin proportion astheinputvoltageis
increased asshowninFig.3,indicatingthatthesynchro-
nizingrangeisabout±1%perinputvoltageof1V.
Example: Supposethattheinputsignalvoltageis
1V rmsandtheoscillatingfrequencyof
AG-203 isbetween990Hzand1010Hz

thefrequency canbe synchronized with
1kHz ofthe input signal.
Notethat too high a synchronizingsignalvoltagewill
affect the amplitude and distortion factor, and care must
therefore be takenwhen the signalvoltage is higherthan
3V rms. Also, notethat ifthe synchronizingsignal is
largelydeviated from the frequency of AG-203, the
synchronization is pulled out whichaffects the distor-
tion factor. Itis thereforeadvisablethat the oscillating
frequency be firstsynchronized with a low input signal
voltage (less than 1Vrms)and then the voltage be
increased.

Applications
1. Usingas Sine WaveOscillator
AG-203 canbeusedasa sinewaveoscillatoras out-
linedbelow.
1.1 Since the unit featureslow distortion factor,it
can beusedformeasurementof distortion
charateristic ofamplifier.
1.2 Since the unit featureswidebandwidth,itcan
be usedformeasurementoffrequency charac-
teristic ofamplifier.
1.3The built-in high accuracy attenuatorpermits
measurement ofamplifiergain.
1.4Canbeusedasa signal'sourceofimpedance
bridge.
2. MeasurementofAmplifierGain
An exampleofmeasurementofamplifiergainis
described below.
First connect AG-203, amplifiertobetestedandAC
volt-meterasshowninFig.4.
meterto AG-203 tomeasurethe output voltage.
Notethattheuseof ATTENUATOR (3)eliminates
theneedforconnectinga highsensitivityvolt-
meter,If ATTENUATOR (3)issettoOdBandthe
voltmeterindicates2V,itmeansthatthe input
voltageoftheamplifieris50dBbelow2V. There-
fore, thegainobtainedisasfollows;
50dB +20 \og10-^L dB
= 5QdB- 6dB
= 44dB
3. Measurementof Phase Characteristic
Connect AG-203 andanoscilloscopetotheamplifier
tobetestedasshowninFig.5.Ifthereisnophaseshift
aboutthe output signaloftheamplifier,theoscilloscope
willdisplaya straightfineasshowninFig.5A.Ifthe

so thatACvoIt-meterindicatestherated output
(supposed tobe1Vinthisexample)ofthe
amplifier.Tofacilitatethemeasurement,itis
advisable toset ATTENUATOR (3)aslowas

output signalofamplifierissuffering from anamplitude
distortion.Inthis case, reducethe output levelofAG
-203 a little tovarythefrequency.This causes the
straightlineontheoscilloscopetoexpandgraduallyto
turn into anellipse.By utilizing theconfigurationofthis
ellipse, thephaseshiftcanbecalculatedasfollows:
First, measurethemaximumhorizontaldeflection
andsuppose that thisdeflectionis"X"and that the
sectionatwhichtheellipse crosses thehorizontal axis is
"x", asshowninFig.6.And,thephaseshiftanglee is
givenbythefollowing.
Find e from thetableof trigonometric functionsand
thevalueobtainedgivestheangleofphaseshift.
4. UsingasSquareWaveOscillator
AG -203featuresexcellentrisingandfallingcharacter-
istics (120nsasstandardcharacteristic).Ithasno
couplingcapacitorsinthe output stage,sothesag(de-
flectionoftopsection)isaslowas5%at50Hz.By
applyingsucha good squarewavetoanamplifier input,
variouscharacteristicsofamplifiercanbeobservedonan
oscilloscope.Totestanamplifier,proceedasfollows:

1. Connect AG-203, an amplifier tobetestedandan

2. Press WAVE FORM (5)tothe "_TL" position toobtain
square waves of appropriatefrequency and amplitude.
3. During the test,change the frequency as necessary.

Maintenance
1. Removalof Case
Remove 2 screwseachonthe left, right andtopsides
with a Phillipsheadscrewdriver.Liftthe case atthe
underside until the case is fully removed(seeFig.9).
2. Mounting the Case
Place the case so that theundersideofitis left open
a little. Tighten6 screws uniformly. Donotuse exces-
sive forcewhentightening,asit will damagethescrews
andthevinylleatheronthe case.
3. Replacementof Fuse
Openthefuseholder with a Phillipsheadscrewdriver.
Replace thefuse with onehavingthesamerating.

Adjustments
Allthecircuitsof AG-203 arefactoryadjusted prior
toshipmentandnofurtheradjustmentsarerequired,ex-
ceptforthefrequencydialwhichmayneedreadjust-
mentforpropertracking.Althoughthisdialis also pre-
adjustedatthefactory.Ifreadjustmentisrequired,
proceedtotheadjustingworkusinganaccuratetest
equipment.Notethatthepowersupplyvoltagemustbe
calibratedbeforemakingadjustment(seeFig.10).
1. Connecta frequencycounterto OUTPUT terminal
(4).
2. Removetheknobofthefrequencydial,thenloosen
the set-screws onthedial.
3. Set FREQ. RANGE switch(6)toX 100andadjust
theshaftofthedial until thefrequencycounterin-
dicates 1kHz.
4. Setthedialto"10"positionand tighten theset-
screws, makingsurethattheshaft stays asitis. Check
thatthefrequencycounterisindicating1 kHz,then
secure theknobtothedial.
5. Setthedialto"100"positionandadjustTC101fora
readingof10kHzonthefrequencycounter.
6. Set FREQ. RANGE switch(6)toX 1 andthefre-
quency dial(8)to"10"position.AdjustVR101
until thefrequencycounterindicates10Hz.
7. Set FREQ. RANGE switch(6)toX10kandthefre-
quency dial(8)to"100"position.Adjust TC102 for
1 MHzonthefrequencycounter.

Caution
1. Donotapplyvoltageofmorethan10Vrmsto OUT-
PUT terminaland SYNC terminal.Ifa DCvoltageis
tobe used, Itshouldbeapplied through a capacitor.
2. Connectingleadsshouldbeasshortaspossible.Use
ofa longshieldcablewillaffecthighfrequency
amplitudecharacteristicsbecauseofitsownlineca-
pacitance. Also,useofa longunshieldedleadwill
introducenoiseand cause othertroubles.
3. Powersupplyvoltage:
AG-203 ispresettooperateonAC240V,however,
thisshouldbecheckedbeforeconnectingACpower
cord, ifyourlocalACvoltageisotherthan240V,
change thepositionofthepowervoltageselectorac-
cordingtotheinstructionsontherearpanel.Note
thatoperatingvoltageis within ± 10%oftherated
voltage.
4. Outputwaveformafterswitchingon:
Because oftheuseofdirectcoupledcircuitsthrough-
outtheentirestage,a DCvoltagewillappearat OUT-
PUT terminalfora whilewhenthepowerison. This
DC voltagewilldisappearabout20to30seconds
laterwhennormal output waveformisobtained.
5. Outputvoltagevariationduetoambienttemperature:
A thermistorisusedtocontroltheoscillatingvoltage.
Care shouldbeusedwhenoperating AG-203 inat-
mosphere of excessive temperaturevariationbecause
thethermistorisnormallyaffectedbyambient
temperaturevariation.
6. Besureto press onlyone FREQ RANGE switch.If
twoswitchesarepressedatthesametimeorallthe
switches areinreleasedpositions,your AG-203 will
notworkproperly.
7. Impedancematching:
Any relatedequipmenttobeconnectedto OUTPUT
terminalshouldbecheckedtoseethatits input im-
pedance matchesthe output impedance(600a ) of
AG-203.
8. Effectofexternalnoise:
Excessive noise from anoutsidesourcemayaffect
theexternalsynchronizing input terminal.Ifsucha
noise isevident,shortthisterminal (output voltage
amplitudewillsomewhatdeviateinthis case).
