GENERAL
Please note the following when using this manual.
•This manual covers 6 oscilloscope models;CS-5270,CS-5260,CS-5230,CS-5275,CS-5265,
andCS-5235.However, explanation about the panels,operating procedures and applica-
tions is made using the CS-5270. Although most ofthe contents is commonto6 models,
please note that any portion which is not is expressedwithinbrackets [ ].

2. SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT PROTECTION PRECAUTIONS
1) Check your line voltagebeforeuse.Theoscilloscopehasa fuseholderandvoltage
selector onthe left oftheAC inlet ontherearpanel.Thevoltage below theW lark
shows the1inevoltage setting of your osci1loscope.If your line voltageis
different from theoscilloscope setting, thereisa danger ofmalfunctioning.Do
not connect tothesupply until thevoltageselector matches thesupplyvoltage.
Setto100V.
2)Theosci1loscopeis equipped with internal components thatarehighly charged
electrically. For your ownprotection,donot remove thecasingforanyreason.
3)Donotusetheoscilloscopeinthefollowing locations.
•In direct sunlight
•Inextremelyhot and/or humid areas
•Inareasaffectedbyhigh levels of mechanical vibration
• Around areaswithstrong lines of magnetic forcesor impulse voltage
4) Make surethatthevoltageappliedto each inputterminal does not exceed the maximum
specified.

Donot under anycircumstancesapplyvoltagetothe output terminals from external
power sources.
5)In order topreventtheCRT's fluorescentscreen from scorching,donotadjustthe
brightnesshigherthannecessary.Donotleavethespottingfunctiononforlong
periodsoftime.

6)TheInstrumentIs equipped with auxiliary support. Youcanuseiteither horizontally
or vertically. Donotplaceanyobjectonthetopoftheinstrumentorpositionitin
areas where the ventilation holesinthecasingareblocked.Any blockage wi11
cause the temperature ofthe internal components toincrease, resulting inpossible
damage.
7) Connect a ground wiretotheGNDterminalfor safety.
8)Ifthe power isturnedonandoffrepeatedly,the oscillscope maymalfunction. Once
the power isturnedoff,leave five seconds beforeturningthe power onagain.
9)The probes suppliedwiththeoscilloscopeareprecision parts. Handle them withgreat
care. [The probes suppliedwiththe CS-5230,CS-5260, or CS-5270 have terminalsfor
detecting readout signals. Donotuse them withanosci1loscopewithno probe
detection function. ]

3. FEATURES

High Sensitivity : Sensitivity upto1 mV/div.
fide Bands : The frequency range isDCto20MHz(-3dB)at
1 fflV and,2 mV/div range andDCto100MHz[DCto
40 MHzforthe CS-5230 or CS-5235, DCto60MHzfor
the CS-5260 or CS-5265] (-3dB) for 5 mV/div.
HDTV : A specially designed HDTV signal triggering circuit
offers stable and adjustment-freesynchronizationwith
the FRAMEand LINE signals from smal1 to large
amplitudes.
Ease of operation: The osci1loscope does notuse multi-function knobs.
Thus, an inexperienced person mayuse it easily.
Straightfowardswitchlayout onthe panel eliminates
errors even for complicated operations.
Three-channel vertical axis : Trigger signals maybe measured onCH3 withoutusing
thetrigger view function.
Stepless sensitivity control: The vertical axis sensitivity maybe changed from 1
mV/div to5 V/div continuouslywith a rotaryswitch.
High Speed Sweep : High speed sweeping is possible ata time base of5
ns/div(during x10MAG operation)
[10ns/div forthe CS-5230 or CS-5235],
High Accuracy:Accuracy is within 3% for both vertical ax i s
sensitivity and sweep time.
Fixed Synchronization: The fixed synchronizationfunctioneliminatestrouble-
some synchronization.
One Touch X-Y : Switching toX-Y operation is via a single switch.
Automatic TriggerSignalSelection: Triggersignal canbe selectedautomaticallyaccording
to the VERT MODE control sett ing by switching the
SOURCE control to VERT.
CHI OUTPUT : A channel 1 output terminal*is added forCHI input
signal monitoring.
High Stability, High Reliability : Hybrid integrated circuits are employed in al 1
circuits, realizing high standards in stabi1ity and
reliability.
Scale Illumination: The scale illumination function makes it possible to
take photographs of waveform datadisplayed ontheCRT
in a dark room.

Delay Time Position :A delay time position maybeset quickly and accu-
rately with coarse and fine controls.

Readout :The verticalaxis input sensitivity, sweep time and
other scalefactors are displayed in characters onthe
CRT.
Cursor Function :The voltage difference,current ratio, time difference,
time ratio, frequency andphase difference maybe
measured with two cursors. Theyare displayed onthe
CRTfor quick and accurate measurement.

5. PANELEXPLANATION
5 — 1 Front Panel
® Cathode ray tube (CRT)
The effective displayscreensurface runsover an area of eight 10mm divisions (80mm)
along the vertical axis andten10mm divisions (100mm) along the horizontal axis.
With an integral graticule etched onthe tube surface, the chance ofmeasurement
errors dueto parallaxoccurring between the trace andthe graticule is significantly
reduced.There is also a % display onthe left oftheCRTfor measuring the rise time.

Adjusts the focus to obtain the clearest display.
® INTENSITY control
Adjusts the brightness ofthe trace line.

A voltageterminal for calibration. Used for ad just ing the probe. Outputs 1 Vp-p,
positive polarity, approx. 1 kHz square waves.

Used tosetupa common ground with other equipment.

approx. 250kHz (indual-traceoperation),regardless of sweep time.

Alternate (ALT) andChop (CHOP) Modes
When usingthese modes duringmulti-traceoperation, the display Is divided up
according to time.
In the chop mode, each channel is subdividedaccording to time within each sweep.
Normally, this kind of measurement is carried out with signals of eitherslower
sweep rate from 1 ms/div orlow repetition rates where flicker is quitenoticeable,
In the alternate mode, each channel is displayed one after another.Therefore,
each channel display appears much clearer. Normally, a faster sweep is employed.

The vertical axis sensitivity is controlledwith theCHI vertical axis attenuator.
The VOLTS/DIV controlswitches itin1-2-5 steps.Calibrated vert ical axis
sensitivity is obtained by setting V. VARI totheCAL position.
In X-Y operation, the VOLTS/DIV controlserves asa Y-axisattenuator.

Providesfine-control oftheCHI verticalaxissensitivity. Set with the VOLTS/DIV
control. The attenuator is calibrated IfItis fully turned clockwise totheCAL
position.
In X-Y operation, theVARIABLE controlserves asa Y-axis fine attenuator control.
® ^POSITION control
Adjusts the vertical position ofCHIwaveform displayed ontheCRT.
Serves asa Y-axispositioncontrolduring X-Y operation.
® AC-GND-DC switch
Selects theCHI verticalaxis inputsignalcoupling mode.
AC: Input signals areAC coupled, andDCcomponentsareremoved.Low frequency
signal level falls by3 dBor more below5 Hzifthe1 : 1 probeora

GND: Input ofthe vertical amplifier isgrounded, allowing theground potential
to be checked. The input resistance is1 UQ withrespect totheground.

@ CURSOR MODE (R/OOFF) [CS-5230, CS-5260 & CS-5270]
Selects the cursordisplay mode and turns the readout display on and off,Every time
theswitch is pressed, the cursordisplay mode changes inthe order of Off, ¥ cursor,
1 cursor, and Off. Whenthe switch is pressed for a second or more during readout
display, readout displayincludingscalefactordisplay is turnedoff. To turn the
readout displayfunction on, press the switchagain.
® TRACESEP control
Adjusts the vertical position ofA sweep withrespect to A sweep when theH. MODE isset
to ALTand A sweep and B sweep are displayed alternately.
® HOLD OFF control
Adjusts the time between the end point ofanA sweep and the start point of another
A sweep. Use this control to adjust the hold off time and adjust the trigger level if
triggering is required for complex signals. Turning the control fully counterclock-
wise to the NORM position minimizes the hold off time.

Selects the horizontal axis display mode as shown below:
A : Runs inthe A sweep mode.
ALT : Displays A sweep and B sweep alternately.
B : Runs inthe B sweep mode.
X-Y : Serves asanX-Y oscilloscopewith channel 1 as the Y-axis and channel 2 as
theX-axis,regardless of theV. MODE setting.

Selects the trigger signil c&upiing.
AC : AC ctiplei triggersignalwithout DC components is input to the trigger
circuit. The AC position is used fornormalwaveform observation.
HFrej : Triggersignal is passed though a low-pass filter and input to the trigger
circuit. The cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter is approx. 30 kHz.
DC : DC coupled triggersignal is input to the trigger curcuit.
TV FRAME: Vertical synchronizationpulses are extracted from the composite video
signals and input to the trigger circuit.
