PRECAUTIONS
SAFETY
Before connectingtheinstrumenttothepower source, care-
fullyreadthe following information,thenverifythatthe
powercordandpowerlinefuseareonesforyourpowerline.
The instrument'srearpanelhasa fuseholderonthe left of
theACinletterminal(thefuseholeralso serves asa vol-
tageselector).Thevalueunderthetriangle• markedon
theholderindicatesthelinevoltagesetfortheinstrument.
Ifthepowercordisnotapplied with thecorrectvoltage,
thereisa danger from electricshock.
•Whenconvertingthevoltage,refertotheMaintenance
section.
Line voltage
This instrumentoperatesusingac-power input voltagesthat
100/120/220/240 V atfrequencies from 50Hzto60Hz.
Power cord
The groundwireofthe3-wireacpowerplugplacesthe
chassis andhousingoftheoscilloscopeatearthground.Do
notattempttodefeatthegroundwireconnectionorfloat
theoscilloscope;todosomayposea greatsafetyhazard.
The appropriatepowercordissuppliedbyan option that
is specifiedwhentheinstrumentisordered.
The optionalpowercordsareshownasfollowsinFig.1.
Line fuse
The fuseholderislocatedontherearpanelandcontains
theline fuse. Verifythattheproperfuseisinstalledby
replacingtheline fuse.
EQUIPMENT PROTECTION
1. Neverallowa smallspotofhighbrilliancetoremain sta-
tionaryonthescreenformorethana few seconds. The
screen maybecomepermanentlyburned.A spotwill
occur onlywhenthescopeissetupforX-Yoperation
and nosignalisapplied.Eitherreducetheintensityso
thespotisbarelyvisible,switchbacktonormalsweep
operationwhennosignalisapplied,orsetupthescope
forspotblanking.
2. Nevercovertheventilatingholesonthetopoftheos-
cilloscope, asthiswillincreasetheoperatingtempera-
tureinsidethe case.
3. Neverapplymorethanthemaximumratingtotheos-
cilloscope inputs.

Never applyexternalvoltagetotheoscilloscope out-
putterminals.
4. Alwaysconnecta cable from theearthground(GND)
jack oftheoscilloscopetothe chassis oftheequipment
undertest. Without thiscaution,theentirecurrentfor
theequipmentundertestmaybedrawn through the
probeclipleadsundercertain circumstances. Such con-
ditionscouldalsoposea safetyhazard,whichthe
groundcablewillprevent.
5. Alwaysusetheprobegroundclipsforbestresults.Do
notuseanexternalgroundwireinlieuoftheprobe
groundclips,asundesiredsignalsmaybeintroduced.
6. Operationadjacenttoequipmentwhichproducesstrong
ac magneticfieldsshouldbeavoidedwherepossible.
This includessuchdevicesaslargepowersupplies,
transformers, electricmotors,etc.,thatare often found
inanindustrialenvironment.Strongmagneticshields
can exceedthepractical CRT magneticshieldinglimits
and resultinterferenceanddistortion.
7. Probecompensationadjustmentmatchestheprobeto
the input ofthescope.Forbestresults,compensation
ofprobeshouldbeadjustedinitially,thenthesamepro-
be always used with the input ofscope.Probecompen-
sationshouldbereadjustedwhenevera probe from a
differentscopeis used. (Seepage21)
8. InX-Yoperation,donot pull outthe PULLx 10MAG
switch. Ifpulledoutit,noisemayappeareonthe
waveform.
9. When turning onandoffthe POWER switchrepeated-
ly,keepanintervalofabout5 seconds. Faster onand
offoperationmay cause malfunctiontotheinstrument.
10. DonotusetheprovidedPC-31Probe(suppliedfor
CS-51 70only) with othermeasuringequipmentbe-
cause itincorporatesa terminalfor READOUT detec-
tion which might damagetheotherequipment.

graphoftwoinstantaneousvoltages.Thedisplaymaybe
a directcomparisonoftwovoltagessuchasduringphase
measurement, orfrequencymeasurement with Lissajous
waveforms.
To useanexternalhorizontal input, usethe following pro-

16) SINGLE SWEEP OPERATION
This modeofdisplayisusefulfor looking atnon-
synchronousorone time events.
Procedure:
1. Setthe TRIG-MODE (§)toeitherAUTOorNORM.Apply
a signalofapproximatelythesameamplitudeandfre-
quencyasthesignal that istobeobservedasthetrig-
gersignalandsetthe trigger level.
2. Set TRIG MODEto RESET - observe that the READY
indicatorLEDlightstoindicatetheresetcondition.This
LED goesoutwhenthesweepperiodiscompleted.
3. Aftertheaboveset-upiscompletedthescopeisready
tooperateinthe SINGLE sweepmodeofoperationafter
resettingtheinstrumentusingthe RESET switch. Input
ofthe trigger signalresultsinoneandonlyonesweep
and READY indicatorLEDgoesout.
