PRECAUTIONS
SAFETY
Before connectingtheinstrumenttothepowersource, care-
fullyreadthe following information,thenverifythatthe
powercordandpowerlinefuseareonesforyourpowerline.
The instrument'srearpanelhasa fuseholderonthe left of
theACinletterminal(thefuseholeralso serves asa vol-
tageselector).Thevalueunderthetriangle• markedon
theholderindicatesthelinevoltagesetfortheinstrument.
Ifthepowercordisnotapplied with thecorrectvoltage,
thereisa danger from electricshock.
Line voltage
This instrumentoperatesusingac-power input voltagesthat
100/120/220/240 V atfrequencies from 50Hzto60Hz.
Power cord
The groundwireofthe3-wireacpowerplugplacesthe
chassis andhousingoftheoscilloscopeatearthground.Do
notattempttodefeatthegroundwireconnectionorfloat
theoscilloscope;todosomayposea greatsafetyhazard.
The appropriatepowercordissuppliedbyan option that
is specifiedwhentheinstrumentisordered.
The optionalpowercordsareshownasfollowsinFig.1.
Line fuse
The fuseholderislocatedontherearpanelandcontains
theline fuse. Verifythattheproperfuseisinstalledby
replacingtheline fuse.
5. Alwaysusetheprobegroundclipsforbestresults.Do
notuseanexternalgroundwireinlieuoftheprobe
groundclips,asundesiredsignalsmaybeintroduced.
6. Operationadjacenttoequipmentwhichproducesstrong
ac magneticfieldsshouldbeavoidedwherepossible.
This includessuchdevicesaslargepowersupplies,trans-
formers, electricmotors,etc.,thatare often found inan
industrialenvironment.Strongmagneticshieldscanex-
ceed thepracticalCRTmagneticshieldinglimitsand
result interferenceanddistortion.
7. Probecompensationadjustmentmatchestheprobeto
the input ofthescope.Forbestresults,compensation
ofprobeshouldbeadjustedinitially,thenthesamepro-
be always used with the input ofscope.Probecompen-
sationshouldbereadjustedwhenevera probe from a
differentscopeis used. (Seepage19)
8. InX-Yoperation,donot pull outthe PULLx 10MAG
switch. Ifpulledoutit,noisemayappeareonthe
waveform.
EQUIPMENT PROTECTION
1. Neverallowa smallspotofhighbrilliancetoremain sta-
tionaryonthescreenformorethana fewseconds.The
screen maybecomepermanentlyburned.A spotwilloc-
cur onlywhenthescopeissetupforX-Yoperationand
nosignalisapplied.Eitherreducetheintensitysothespot
is barelyvisible,switchbacktonormalsweepoperation
when nosignalisapplied,orsetupthescopeforspot
blanking.
2. Nevercovertheventilatingholesonthetopofthe oscil-
loscope, asthiswillincreasetheoperatingtemperature
inside the case.
3. Neverapplymorethanthemaximumratingtothe oscil-
loscope inputs.

oftheoscilloscopetothe chassis oftheequipmentun-
dertest. Without thiscaution,theentirecurrentforthe
equipmentundertestmaybedrawn through theprobe
clipleadsundercertaincircumstances. Such conditions
couldalsoposea safetyhazard,whichthegroundcable
willprevent.

ablybeunsynchronized.Referto TRIGGERING procedure
belowforadjustingsynchronizationandsweepspeedto
obtain a stabledisplayshowingthedesirednumberof
waveform.
TRIGGERING
The input signalmustbeproperly triggered forstablewave-
form observation. TRIGGERING ispossibleusingthe input
signalINTernallytocreatea trigger or with anEXTernally
providedsignalof timing relationshiptotheobserved sig-
nal, applyingsucha signaltotheEXT TRIG INPUTjack.
The SOURCE switchselectsthe input signal that istobe
used to trigger thesweep, with INTsyncpossibilities
(V.MODE, CH1,CH2, LINE) and CH3/EXT syncpossibility.

is inCH2,the input signalatthechannel2 INPUT(9)jack
becomes trigger regardlessofthe position ofverticalMODE.
Ifthe SOURCE switchissettothe LINE position, triggering
is derived from the input linevoltage(50/60Hz).
This isusefulmeasurements that arerelatedtolinefre-
quency.
*External Sync
Whenthe SOURCE selectionisin EXT/CH3, the input sig-
nalattheEXT TRIG INPUT (23) jackbecomesthe trigger. This
signalmusthavea time orfrequencyrelationshiptothe sig-
nalbeingobservedtosynchronizethedisplay.Externalsync
is preferedforwaveformobservationinmanyapplications.
For example.Fig.7 shows that thesweepcircuitisdriven
bythegatesignalwhenthegatesignalintheburstsignal
is appliedtotheEXT TRIG INPUTjack.Fig.7 alsoshows
the input/output signals,wheretheburstsignalgenerated
from thesignalisappliedtotheinstrumentundertest. Thus,
accurate triggering canbeachieved without regardtothe
input signalfedtotheINPUT© or(9)jackso that no fur-
ther triggering isrequiredevenwhenthe input signalis
varied. WhentheverticalMODEissettoTRI,triple-trace

MEASUREMENT OFTHE VOLTAGE BETWEEN TWO
POINTS ONA WAVEFORM
This techniquecanbeusedtomeasurepeak-to-peak
voltages.
Procedure:
1. Applythesignaltobemeasuredtothe INPUT jack.Set
theverticalMODEtothechanneltobe used. SettheAC-
GND-DC toAC,adjusting VOLTS/DIV and SWEEP
TIME/DIV fora normaldisplay.Setthe VARIABLE con-
trol toCALposition.
2. Usingthe• POSITION control,adjustthewaveformpo-
sitionsuchthatoneofthetwopointsfallsona CRT
graduationlineandthattheotherisvisibleonthedis-
play screen.
3. Usingthe< • POSITION control,adjustthesecond point
tocoincide with thecenterverticalgraduationline.
4. Measuretheverticaldistancebetweenthetwopoints
and multiply thisbythesettingofthe VOLTS/DIV control.
Ifa probeis used, further multiply thisbytheattenua-
tion ratio.
ELIMINATIONOFUNDESIREDSIGNAL
COMPONENTS
The ADDfeaturecanbeconvenientlyusedtocancelout
theeffectofanundesiredsignalcomponentwhichmaybe
superimposedonthesignalyouwishtoobserve.(SeeFig.
18)
Procedure:
1. Applythesignalcontaininganundesiredcomponentto
theCH1 INPUT jackandtheundesiredsignalitselfalone
totheCH2 INPUT jack.
2. SettheverticalMODEtoDUAL (CHOP) and SOURCE to
CH2. VerifythatCH2representstheunwantedsignalin
reverse polarity.Ifnecessaryreversepolaritybysetting
CH2 INV.
3. SettheverticalMODEtoADD, SOURCE toV.MODEand
CH2 VOLTS/DIV and VARIABLE sothattheundesired
signal componentiscancelledasmuchaspossible.The
remainingsignalshouldbethesignalyouwishtoobserve
aloneandfreeoftheunwantedsignal.
