I. About this Manual
This manual will cover information needed for the proper installation and operation of your S-Series Commercial Reverse
Osmosis System. We have also included information regarding the frequently asked questions about reverse osmosis
systems. This information may be more technical in nature, but provides further insight to the continued operation of this
equipment to its highest standards.
This manual will use various icons to help highlight issues that are relevant to the safe operation of this equipment. The
following icons will be used as described:
A caution icon will be used to present any information that may hold a potential hazard or concern during the
installation, use or maintenance of this product. Should this information not be followed, it may result in
damage of this equipment and its surroundings.
If there are any additional questions pertaining to this equipment, please contact your local KineticoPRO® Dealer for
further assistance.
II. Reverse Osmosis Technology
In the early 1960’s, the use of reverse osmosis (RO) began its commercial debut. Before this time, the technology had been
used by the U.S. military for the purification of water for troops. Since its introduction into the market, RO has continued to
gain popularity. RO technology oers the finest level of filtration available. The RO membrane acts as a barrier to dissolved
salts and inorganic molecules, as well as organic molecules with a molecular weight greater than approximately 100. Water
molecules, on the other hand, pass freely through the membrane creating a purified product stream.
The applications for RO are diverse and include desalination of sea water or brackish water for drinking purposes, food and
beverage processing, purification of home drinking water and many others. Utilizing RO prior to Ion Exchange (IX) for the
production of ultra high water qualities dramatically reduces operating costs and regeneration frequency of the IX system.
Pressures associated with RO systems can range from 40 psi for tap water systems to 1,000 psi for sea water desalination
systems.

RO technology is not new. The process of osmosis is actually found in nature and in the human body. In this application
human membranes allow nutrients or waste products to pass in and out of the blood stream. “Semipermeable” means that
the membrane is permeable to some species and not permeable to others.
Most semipermeable membranes allow water to pass through and not other molecules or ions. Figure 1 shows a
concentrated solution will increase in volume as water from the dilute solution permeates through the membrane. In this
fashion, the concentrations on either side of the membrane become equal, even though the volumes are not.
This dilution relationship can be quantified by the rise in the height of the salt solution. This height will increase until the
pressure of the column of water (salt solution) is so high that the force of this water column stops the water flow. The
equilibrium point of this water column height in terms of water pressure against the membrane is called osmotic pressure.

Reverse osmosis (Figure 2) is created if a force is applied to this column of water. Thus the direction of water flow through
the membrane can be reversed. This is the basis of the term reverse osmosis. This reversed flow produces “permeate”
water from the salt solution, since the membrane does not permit most salt to pass through it. The typical rejection of a
semipermeable membrane is over 95%. This means that it will reject 95% of the salts and let 5% pass through.

IV. System Sizing Charts
To correctly size a tank for the S-Series systems, do not rely on the production rate noted in the model name (e.g. S-710
= 710 gpd) as production rates are dependent upon actual operating conditions.
Factors that must be examined include:

V. S-Series Presentation
Reverse Osmosis and the S-Series
The S-Series water treatment systems utilize reverse osmosis
membrane technology to deliver high quality water for a variety of
applications. Pure water molecules pass through pores in the semi-
permeable membrane while almost all suspended and dissolved
contaminants remain on the surface. A steady stream of water keeps
the surface of the membrane clean and flushes these separated
contaminants to drain. While the ratio between feed water and product
water (permeate) is dependent on a variety of factors, the S-Series has
been engineered to operate at a very high eciency rate of 65-75%.
The S-Series systems are equipped with EverClean® Rinse which extends
the operating life of the system's membranes by flushing the feed side of
the membrane with high quality permeate water. This two-minute rinse
cycle occurs thirty minutes after the system goes into standby mode.
Note: For installations with atmospheric storage, a minimum 20-gallon
EverClean Rinse storage tank is required.
Pre- and Post-Filtration for the S-Series
Adequate pretreatment must be installed so the feed water to the system meets the operating specifications noted on
page 4. Pretreatment may include softening, chlorine removal, and sediment removal. Depending on the application,
post-filtration may also be required for final polishing.
System Eciency
The S-Series systems achieve highest eciency with softener pretreatment or low hardness.
Feed Pressure Requirements
When specifying pretreatment equipment, ensure the feed water pressure at the inlet to the S-Series system does not
fall below 40 psi. All S-Series systems are equipped with a low pressure sensor that protects the system against low
pressure conditions that could potentially damage the system. When inlet water pressure lower than 15 psi is detected,
the system won't start. If the system is running and low pressure is detected, the system goes into protection mode as
outlined on page 17. In order to maintain trouble-free operation of the system, the minimum feed water pressure should
be 40 psi in order to ensure the system is running at full production capacity.
System Blending Valve
This system is equipped with a blending valve that allows the operator to blend filtered water into the RO product water
stream. This is helpful for applications that require a specific TDS or for applications which need less aggressive RO
product water.
System Performance
For best results, a water analysis should be obtained before specifying equipment. Performance of the system is aected
by a number of parameters, most importantly:
• Pretreatment - Pretreatment may include a softener for hardness removal, high capacity sediment filtration,
chloramines reduction filtration, or specialized treatment for membrane foulants such as iron, manganese or
hydrogen sulfide.
• Maintenance - Regular service is required to protect the membrane and system components.
• Feed Water Temperature - Colder feed water temperature reduces system production.
• Feed Water TDS - High TDS levels reduce system production.
• System Pressure - Higher pressure increases water production (within system operating parameters).
• Membrane Age - Membrane production is reduced over time.
• Membrane Fouling - A membrane cartridge will clog or foul over time resulting in lower production as well as reduced
product water purity. In some cases, membrane fouling may be reversed with appropriate membrane cleaning.

VII.Pre-Installation Checklist
Electrical Outlet and Grounding Instructions
A dedicated, grounded 115 V, 60 Hz, 20 A GFCI outlet is required.
GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS – This appliance must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown,
grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. This
appliance is equipped with a cord having an appliance-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be
plugged into an appropriate outlet that is installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
WARNING – Improper connection of the appliance-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.
Check with a qualified electrician or service representative if you are in doubt whether the appliance is properly
grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance; if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet
installed by a qualified technician.
Inlet and Working Pressures
Feed water must be maintained between 45-65 psi when water is flowing. A booster pump or larger diameter
plumbing may be required in low-pressure or low-flow installations. A pressure regulator should be installed to
ensure that pressure does not rise above 65 psi. Maximum system working pressure is 150 psig (1,034 kPa).
Temperature
Ambient temperature must be maintained above 32°F (0°C). Freezing temperatures will cause breakage of
equipment and VOID ALL WARRANTIES.
Water Temperature
Inlet water temperature must be maintained between 35°F (1.7°C) and 90°F (32.2°C) to prevent damage to the
system’s membranes.
System Location
FOR INDOOR USE ONLY. Failure to comply with this requirement can cause significant damage to the system and
will create a safety concern.
Plumbing - By-pass
A by-pass is required prior to all water treatment systems to
allow untreated water to reach the point of use during system
maintenance and repair.
Plumbing - Softener
Installations that utilize softener or pretreatment tanks should have
a by-pass that will allow softened water to reach the point of use
during reverse osmosis system maintenance and repair.
Plumbing - Water Heater
If a water heater is connected to the softened water line, a check
valve should be placed on the inlet to the water heater to ensure
that the RO system does not pull water from the water heater during
periods of feed water pressure fluctuation.
Pre/Post Filtration
Follow manufacturer guidelines for all pre/post-filtration equipment. Pre/post-filtration should be placed in close
proximity to the reverse osmosis system.
Reverse Osmosis System
The system should be placed on a shelf or rack.
System Blending Valve
The system was shipped with the blending valve CLOSED to allow the system to produce very low TDS water. For best
results, adjust the blending valve after the system has been running for at least 1 minute and the pressurized bladder
tank is nearly full (if equipped).
Floor Drain
This installation will require close access to a floor drain for the drain water (brine) from the reverse osmosis system.

Product Water (permeate) Storage
For operation in applications that use large amounts of water, a storage tank is required to store water and then deliver
it at a desired pressure. The permeate water is not pressurized from the system. Two options for storage tanks are
available:
Bladder Tank
This tank type is closed and pressurized using an internal air charge to create the delivery pressure for the stored water. The S-Series
systems are designed for installation with a pressurized permeate water storage tank. The S-Series controller automatically starts and
stops the system based on the permeate water pressure in the tank.
This configuration will aect the rated daily production of the system due to the back pressure on the membrane.
Atmospheric Tank
An atmospheric tank is closed and includes an air vent so that the water can be added or removed from the tank without creating
pressure. The advantage of this tank type is that venting eliminates any backpressure on the unit, thus increasing the system’s
operating production and eciency. When using an atmospheric tank, an external repressurization pump is used to remove water
from the tank and pressurize it to 50 psi throughout your site. The S Series systems can fill a non-pressurized tank equipped with a
#7527A Level Control assembly kit. All atmospheric storage systems require a minimum of a 20 gallon pressurized storage tank for
the EverClean Rinse cycle
Note: When using an atmospheric storage tank, it is strongly recommended to use a safety overflow drain pipe to an appropriate size
floor drain.
VIII. Installation
Tools and Installation Materials
Plumbing runs on the process, purge and drain outlets should all be completed with PVC or PEX piping. Copper and
galvanized pipe will be chemically attacked by the low TDS permeate water.

Electrical
WARNING: When the water treatment system is connected to electrical power, there is ALWAYS live high voltage inside
the controller box. Be sure to ALWAYS disconnect the electrical power cable before opening controller box. Electrical
installation should be completed by a certified electrician.
WARNING: Improper connection of the appliance-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Check with
a qualified electrician or service representative if you are in doubt whether the appliance is properly grounded. Do not
modify the plug provided with the appliance; if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified
technician.
1. A dedicated, grounded 115 V, 60 Hz, 20 A GFCI outlet is required.
2. DO NOT press the START button yet. Proceed to the System Fill and Flush Procedure.
System Fill and Flush Procedure
The S-Series water treatment system is delivered empty, not filled with water. DO NOT start the system before
completing this Fill and Flush procedure or damage to the pump will occur.
1. Close the tank valve.
2. Plug in system. The controller box will power up and place the system into Ready/Standby mode.
3. Press and hold the FLUSH button until FLUSHING EXTENDED is displayed. The system will begin to fill with
water. The pump will not start.
4. Observe the flush water stream coming out of the system drain line. Once this stream is free of any air bubbles,
and the flow is uninterrupted and steady, the system has been filled with water.
5. Press the FLUSH button again to exit Flush/Fill mode. The system will return to Ready/Standby mode.
Pressurized Storage Tank
This chart shows the storage capacity for pressurized storage tanks at various precharges.
To determine this volume:
1. First locate the line that represents the air precharge of the tank.
2. Find the point on the horizontal axis at the bottom of the graph that represents the total pressure (air plus water)
in the tank. Move vertically to the appropriate air precharge line found in step 1.
3. Move horizontally to the left axis and read the percent of “maximum total volume” in the tank under the above
conditions. Multiply this percentage by the maximum total water volume to determine the volume of water in the
tank.

Pressurized Storage Tank Fill and Drain Procedure
1. Once the System Fill and Flush Procedure is complete, the pressurized storage tank must be filled and drained
before Normal Operation.
2. Open the tank valve.
3. Press the START button to start the system.
4. After the system is started, an automatic step-by-step startup sequence occurs which includes a short flush
mode.
5. After the sequence is completed, the pump will start and the system will begin producing purified water into the
pressurized tank.
6. After the pressurized tank reaches 65 psi, the system will go into standby mode (the pump will turn o).
7. Drain the tank using the flush valve on the postfilter of the filtration array.
8. Allow the tank to refill. The system is now ready for use. Proceed to Blending Valve Adjustment, if required.

Use both Teflon tape and pipe sealant on all threaded connections. For plastic connections, make sure fittings are first
cleaned, then glued. For tubing connections, plastic tubing should be cut straight with a sharp blade. These procedures
will minimize leaks at the connections.
Tank Connection
The figure at right shows the tank connection assembly.
1. Connect 1/2” tubing connector to 1/2” x 1” reducer bushing. (Use a 3/8"
to 1/2" tubing connector if needed.)
2. Connect adapter to outlet of 1” NPT tee.
3. To other outlet of tee, connect 1” short nipple.
4. Connect 1” 90° elbow to the 1” short nipple, connect 1” short nipple to 1”
90° elbow.
5. Connect nipple to 1” NPT check valve.
6. To common inlet of tee, connect 1” short nipple.
7. To nipple, connect 1” true union ball valve.
8. To other end of ball valve, connect 1” short nipple.
9. Disassemble the true union ball valve with the nipple. Make the
connection from this nipple to the tank.
10. Reassemble ball valve.

High Level Control Kit
1. Assemble the float switch components to the top of the tank.
2. Place the level control switch with the cord in the tank through the
manway.
3. Guide the cord out of the tank through the bulkhead, nipple, tee and the
cord grip.
4. Tighten in place as shown in Repressurizer Installation section.
5. Thread the HEPA filter horizontally onto the 3/8” nipple in the TEE.
6. Disconnect all power to the CRO System.
7. Connect the wiring to the controller as described in the Connection to
the S-Series controller section of this manual.
Atmospheric Storage Setup
When using the atmospheric storage setup, at a minimum you will need to use a 20 gallon EverClean Rinse tank. This
will ensure you have enough permeate water and line pressure to prevent the system from cycling.

Connection to the S-Series Controller
The S-Series controller is pre-wired to receive input signals from a Normally Open (NO) pretreatment lockout switch.
This wire is coiled inside the NEMA Controller enclosure box and may be threaded through the opening in the box for
connection to the pretreatment lockout.
WARNING: When the water treatment system is connected to electrical power, there is ALWAYS live high voltage
inside the controller box. ALWAYS disconnect the electrical power cable before opening controller box.

Atmospheric Storage Tank Sanitization
Atmospheric tank needs to be sanitized before being used or any time there is a risk of contamination. Fill the tank
and add the volume of bleach indicated below. It is recommended to drain tank before using the water.

Blending Valve Adjustment
This system is equipped with a blending valve that allows the operator to blend filtered water into the RO product
water stream to achieve a higher TDS. The system was shipped with the blending valve CLOSED to allow the system to
produce very low TDS water. For certain applications, you may choose to open the blending valve to increase the TDS in
the product water.
For best results, adjust the blending valve after the system has been
running for at least 1 minute and the pressurized bladder tank is nearly
full (if equipped). After the system has turned o due to a full tank
indication, dispense water until the system starts up again, then stop
dispensing water. Adjust the blending valve while the tank is filling.
1. Viewing the system from the front/top, turn the blending valve
counter-clockwise (CCW) to open valve and increase TDS.
2. Turn the blending valve clockwise (CW) to close the valve and
decrease TDS.
NOTE: There will be some delay in the TDS monitor response on the
front panel. The number of turns required will vary with the TDS
of the incoming feed water and the desired product water TDS.

IX. Maintenance
Maintenance Indicators and Recommended Schedule
The S-Series systems are equipped with maintenance indicators, which will display on the front panel.
Appropriate service procedures should be conducted immediately after notification. Additionally, an overall system
check is recommended on an annual basis in order to maintain optimal system performance and ensure longevity of the
entire water treatment installation.
Follow maintenance procedure below.

X. Maintenance Guide
Step 1 - Preparation
1. Prepare for water spills as some water will be released during this procedure.
2. Unplug the system.
3. Shut o all feed water to the system. Turn o the by-pass valve before all water treatment equipment.
4. Relieve any remaining pressure in the feed line at the prefilter.
5. Isolate the product water from the storage tank by shutting the tank valve.
Step 2 - Replace Membranes
1. Remove the silver-metal clamps that hold the vessel end caps in place.
2. Remove the end caps from the vessels with a slow, steady pressure, rocking
the caps back and forth and side-to-side.
3. Do not attempt to pry the cap o, as this may damage the vessel. Do not kink
the tubing.
4. Locate the feed end of the bottom vessel. The membrane brine seal will be
located on the feed end.
5. Locate the feed end of the top vessel. The membrane brine seal will be
located on the feed end.
6. If necessary, unmount the vessel assembly for proper cleaning.
The new membrane elements MUST be inserted with the brine seal oriented
toward the feed end of the vessel. DO NOT insert the membrane in such a way that the brine seal is pinched or
rolled. Improper placement of the membranes will result in negative performance and may damage the system.
7. Orient the new membrane into the vessel as noted above. When inserting the new membranes into the vessels,
it is easiest to place the end of the membrane without the brine seal in first. Once placed, the membranes in the
vessels will be oriented opposite each other with the brine seal at the feed end of each vessel.
8. Replace the end caps and clamps.
9. Fasten the clamp screws.
10. If necessary, remount the membrane vessels back onto the frame and reconnect the tubing.
Step 3 - System Fill and Flush
1. Ensure the tank valve is closed.
2. Plug in system. The controller box will power up and place the system into Ready/Standby mode.
3. Press and hold the FLUSH button. The system will begin to fill with water. The pump will not start.
4. Observe the flush water stream coming out of the system drain line. Once this stream is free of any air bubbles,
and the flow is uninterrupted and steady, the system has been filled with water.
5. Press the FLUSH button again to exit Flush/Fill mode. The system will return to Ready/Standby mode.

Step 4 - Drain and Fill Tank
1. Once the System Fill and Flush Procedure is complete, the pressurized storage tank must be filled and drained
before normal operation.
2. Open the tank valve.
3. Press the START button to start the system.
4. After the system is started, an automatic step-by-step startup sequence occurs which includes a short flush mode.
5. After the sequence is completed, the pump will start and the system will begin producing purified water into the
pressurized tank.
6. After the pressurized tank reaches 65 psi, the system will go into standby mode (the pump will turn o).
7. Press STOP button to turn o system.
8. Drain the tank using the flush valve on the postfilter of the filtration array.
9. Press START button to start the system.
10. Allow the tank to refill. The system is now ready for use. Refer to Blending Valve Adjustment, page 14, if required.
Step 5 - Reset the Maintenance Indicators, Reset the Clock
After membrane maintenance has been completed, use the following procedure to reset the maintenance indicators,
clear error codes and reset the clock.
1. Press CAL to enter calibration mode. Display will read ENTER CODE TO CALIBRATE.
2. Press SETUP and EXIT buttons at the same time.
3. MEMBRANE CHANGE INTERVAL will be displayed.
4. Press the and buttons at the same time. Display will read RESET.
5. Press NEXT repeatedly until READY is displayed.
6. Repeat 1-5 for FILTER CHANGE INTERVAL.
7. Press the DATA button, then CLOCK button on the panel display. Follow the prompts to reset the clock.
XI. Troubleshooting
Auto Restart after Power Interruption or Power Failure
The system will auto restart after a power failure. The date and time may need to be manually updated. Press the DATA
button, then CLOCK button on the display panel. Follow the prompts.
Note: If the tank is full, the system will turn on but will go into standby mode. Once the tank pressure falls below 30 psi,
the system pump will start and system will perform normally.
Low Inlet Pressure
Low inlet feed pressure will trigger an EO2 error, the inlet solenoid valve will close, and the pump will stop. This protects
the system from damage. The system controller will attempt to restart the system three times. If the feed inlet pressure is
too low after three attempts, the system will shut down and a manual restart will be required.

First restart attempt - One (1) minute after E02 error code initiates, Second restart attempt - Two (2) minutes after E02
error code initiates, Third restart attempt - Five (5) minutes after E02 error code initiates.
Error Codes on Front Display Panel
The front panel display is used to communicate system diagnostic information. The following diagnostic codes may be
displayed.
E02 - Low inlet water pressure E05 - Filter change indicated E06 - Membrane change indicated
Troubleshooting Chart
Problem Possible Cause Solution
1. No water production.
(Error code E02 may be

A. Low feed pressure at inlet.
High pressure drop.
Clogged prefilters.
B. If feed water pressure at the inlet
is higher than 80 psi, the pressure
transducer may be damaged.
C. Pump thermal overload has
been actuated.
A. Check prefiltration. Make changes to
reduce pressure drop. Replace filters,
if needed.
B. Replace low pressure transducer.
C. Wait 30 minutes. Reset overload
relay in the power box. If the relay
breaks the power to the pump again,
repair the pump/motor.
2. Low water production. A. Clogged prefilter.
B. Fouled membrane.
C. Pump failure.
D. EverClean Rinse solenoid valve
fails in the open position.
A. Replace prefilters.
B. Analyze pretreatment. Replace the
membrane.
