Reference Procedures
Loopback Reference Procedure for Two Way Measurements
NOTE: Light Source/Two Way/ ORL port must use a connector with APC polish
NOTE: For two or one direcon tesng involving two instruments, referencing should be
independently performed on both Loss Test Sets. The following will set reference at all
wavelengths:
Clean and inspect patch cables and tesng ports before connecng any cables.
Connect the Light Source /Two Way /ORL port to the Power Meter port of the same
instrument using the proper patch cable.
Select [POWER], Press [Autotest], then press [Abs/Rel] and then press [Set Ref] for 3
seconds. Meters will display ‘BUSY’ and then 0.00 dB R.

Referencing is performed on one of the instruments, which will set reference at all wavelengths on both
Loss Test Sets:
Connect the Light Source /Two Way /ORL ports of the instruments.
Select [POWER], [Autotest] ], [Abs/Rel] and press [Set Ref] for 3 seconds. Meters will display ‘BUSY’ and
then 0.00 dB R.

Side by Side Reference for Single Direcon Tesng
Connect the Light Source/Two Way/ORL port to the power meter of the second instrument.
Select [POWER] on both instruments
On Light source, Press [Auto test]
On Power meter, press [Abs/Rel] and [Set Ref] for 3 seconds. Meter will briey display ‘BUSY’ and then
0.00 dB R.
NOTE: Two patch cables can be used for the reference if required for current tesng applicaon.

Measurement Procedures
TWO WAY LOSS AND ORL IN AUTOTEST
This method requires a matched pair of Two Way Loss Test Sets, which will perform automated bi-
direconal tesng and wavelength detecon by data exchange between the instruments.
Aer Two Way Loss Test Sets have been referenced:
Exit Autotest on both instruments.
Connect the Fiber Under Test (FUT) to the patch cables connected to the Two Way ports
Press [Autotest] on one of the instruments
Both instruments now show the same two way average loss in dB R and display rotates through all available
source wavelengths.

Both units also display ‘A B’. ‘A’ will be ashing on the unit where Autotest was iniated, and it has be-
come the A unit. The other unit will ash ‘B’, and it has become the B unit. This only indicated which unit is
A and B not the direcon of test results being displayed.
To step through all measurements on locked wavelength, press [◄► ] buon on the hidden keypad.
Results are displayed in this order:
average bi-direconal loss
loss from A to B: A ►B
loss from B to A: A ◄B
ORL at A end
ORL at B end
When displaying loss in one direcon, the reference value will be shown on the le. Alternavely, se-
lecng [Abs / Rel] displays the actual measured dBm value and source nominal output power.
To determine what direcon the test result is being displayed in look for the ► change between the A and
B icons when you press the [◄► ] on the hidden key pad.

ONE WAY LOSS IN AUTOTEST
This method is applicable for loss measurements where data communicaon is one way only.
Tesng on one ber can be achieved with:
Single Two Way Loss Test Set
Two instruments used as a combinaon of Light source and Power meter
Perform Side by Side Reference for single direcon tesng. Two patch cables may be used if required for
tesng applicaon.
Connect to the Fiber Under Test (FUT), loss will be automacally displayed. Use [-/+] to show one wavelength
only.
To exit Autotest, remove test lead for more than 8 seconds or turn o source
One Way Test Measurements
Memory Funcons
Data can be stored in all modes, however, memory recall and cancel funcons are not available in Autotest
and only work in Light Source, Power Meter or Return Loss modes.
Clear all memory: press both [MR] and [Exit] simultaneously for 3 seconds. ‘clr’ will display.
To save in next available locaon, press [M+].
To change next store locaon, press [◄► ] [-/+] [Set] or [Menu].
To recall, press [MR] and [-/+] to scroll memory. Use [Abs / Rel] to see dB/dBm values. Hold down [Abs/
Rel] to see reference level.
For data recorded in Autotest, press [-/+] to view measurements at all source wavelengths.
For each wavelength, to step through all available Two Way Loss and ORL Autotest measurements, select
[MR], [-/+] and then press [◄►] repeatedly.
Two way test only: press [◄► ] repeatedly to scroll details.
To exit memory display, press [Menu].

Transferring Saved Data
Data transfer between the KI 7347 and Kits external soware package must be
completed using the USB to RS 232 cable.
Install KITS soware from CD provided with the Test Set or go to hp://www.kingsherber.com
Once KITS program has been loaded on the computer open the program. KITS program will display the wel-
come screen with opon for seng up the report. Note that several report opons are available. For Bi-
Direconal Tesng we will select Loss Tesng and Meter Dump. Uncheck all other worksheets.
Uncheck Data Logging and Meter Reading
Select Setup to addional reporng criteria which
must be determined.
If unit is not connected to the computer this screen will appear. Connect the meter to the computer using
the USB to RS 232 cable and press Connect.
Once unit has been connected press Setup to connue with report setup.

This menu will allow you to select the parameters for tesng as well as the report build. Be sure to con-
rm your Test Direcons are set properly including ORL Tests at A and B locaons. Otherwise this data
will not be transferred.
Reference End may be dierent depending on the reference style chosen.
Conrm Wavelength for both Source and Test the press the Green Arrow.
Complete the necessary data including connector type, cable length ( be sure to convert to feet or miles),
splices and connectors.
Conrm the number of bers to test including what ber to start at. This example is ber 19.
Pass/Fail standards can be compared against Internaonal or Custom. Example has established custom
standards.

Now the computer should display the Live Data Worksheet without test results. To import results from the
meter select Add-ins to access the KITS menu.
Next Select Test Data and then Memory Download to start loading results from the machine.
Once acvang the memory download be sure to indicate where to start memory download from, how
many results or bers to be downloaded, wavelengths to be downloaded and what ber ID to start at. This
example has ber 19 saved in the memory as 19. Which makes both circled values idencal.

Final report will populate with the values downloaded from the machine. This example shows failing results
based on the Pass/Fail criteria the user established in previous menus. In this case Inseron Loss was exces-
sive on all bers at 1310 and one ber/wavelength failed the ORL test. Certain items such as Stascal
Analysis can be hidden to make the report smaller. Consult the KITS user manual for more funconality
specics.
