KI021-1 OPTICAL TALK SET
USER MANUAL

KI021-1 Talk Set is used for duplex voice
communication over a single optical fiber, during
installation, testing, measurements, or maintenance
work with fiber optic lines and networks, when
technicians have to communicate to each other by
voice over optical fiber.

About this manual
This manual describes the KI021-1 Talk Set (hereinafter referred
as Talk Set) design and operations with it, and assumes that the
user is adequately qualified in fiber optics maintenance. The
images in this manual can insignificantly differ from your Talk
Set.

1. SAFETY

While working with fiber optics equipment and
live optical fiber, avoid laser exposure to the
eye. Although the laser signal power is
comparatively low, it can still cause eye
damage. Besides, you cannot actually see the
laser light, because it is infrared, which means
you cannot tell if there is light present by
looking at it.

3. GETTING STARTED
3.1. Before calling
To switch the device on, press and hold the [ ON/OFF ]button
( ) at the bottom-left corner for longer than 3 sec. After
switching on the Talk Set screen first shows the current date and
time, and then shows the initial menu with the [ F1, F2, F3 ]
button functions at the bottom of the screen.
Before calling, connect the fiber to the Talk Set via the optical
adaptor at the top of the device. Before connecting, make sure
that the fiber connector is compatible with the adaptor. If not,
change the adaptor or connect a patch cord with a suitable
connector. We also strongly advise to clean the fiber before
connecting with the help of a special optical fiber connector
cleaner.

Then plug in the headset with a microphone via the connector at
the bottom of the Talk Set.
3.2. Charging your Talk Set
As a rule, the Talk Set comes to the customer with the battery
charged (see the Battery level indicator at the top left corner of
the screen). If the device will not switch on or the battery level is
low ( ), charge the battery using the power unit supplied.
The battery is charged via the mini-USB port at the bottom of the
device. While the battery is charging, the LED indicator is on,
and the charging sign ( ) appears at the top-left corner of the
screen. The indicator goes off when the battery is fully charged.
Usual time for charging the battery is about 4-6 hours if the Talk
Set is off.
3.3. Setting up your Talk Set
To make your operation with the Talk Set more convenient, you
can set the following parameters:

To enter the Settings mode, press the [ SETTINGS ]button. As a
result, the Settings screen shown below appears, with the active
parameter blinking:
To change the active parameter value, press the [ < ]and [ > ]
buttons. To jump to the next parameter, press the [ MODE ]
button.
3.4. Screen illunination
To operate in dark, press to illuminate the screen.

4. CALLING
To start a call, press [ F1 ](CALL). As a result, the Outcoming
Call message shows onscreen, the [ F1 ]button changes its name
to (CANCEL), and the name of the [ F2 ]button disappears. You
can also hear the calling signal in the headset.
If optical signal level is enough for communication, the
receiving device screen shows the Incoming Call message and
emits the intermittent buzz sound. You can also hear the
incoming call signal in the headset.
To receive an incoming call, press [ F1 ](CALL) or [ F2 ]
(ANSWER). As a result, on both screens the Talk message
appears, the [ F1 ]button changes its name to (CANCEL), and the
name of the [ F2 ]button disappears. Now you can talk over the
device.
To terminate a call, press [ F1 ](CANCEL) on any device.
If the two Talk Sets get connected in the VOICE mode, the Talk
message appears on both screens as a result. However, if the
signal becomes too weak, the No Sync message appears
onscreen. If the signal continues to fade, the Outcoming Call or
Incoming Call message appears onscreen. When the signal
restores to a sufficient level, communication re-establishes
automatically.

5. MAINTENANCE AND
STORAGE
We strongly advise charging your Talk Set battery only with the
power unit provided. Power units from other devices are not
recommended.
Store your Talk Set in the original package at ambient
temperature of -25o- +55oC, with relative humidity of 95% or
lower at 25o. After the package is removed, store the Talk Set at
ambient temperature of -10o- +35oC, with relative humidity of
80% or lower at 25oC.
If your Talk Set was subjected to temperature below 0oC for long
time, keep it at normal conditions for 2 hours or more before
switching on.

If you plan to store your Talk Set for long time,
charge the battery at about 50-70% first.
DOÊNOT store your device with the battery
completely discharged, because it may reduce
the battery life.

6. WARRANTY
Kingfisher International KI021 Optical Talk Set is guaranteed
against defective components and workmanship for a period of
2 years from the date of delivery, unless specifically stated in the
original purchase contract or agreement. This warranty
excludes optical connectors or incorrect use. Opening the
instrument will invalidate the warranty. Liability is limited
solely to repair of the equipment.

Appx C: Physical principle of
Talk Set operation
The signal from the microphone modulates the 1550 nm laser
diode which emits the modulated outgoing optical signal via the
optical splitter to the optical adaptor. The incoming signal comes
via the optical splitter to the pin-photodiode where it is
converted to an electrical signal, and then amplified. After that
it goes to the headset speakers.
