NOTES; INTRODUCTION
The LMS-150 represents one ofthe bestvaluesin sportlishing
sonar
today. It rivals,othersonar unitscostingmuch more in features and
perfo'mance. Withits menus, the [MS-iso offers easy-to-use opera-
tion at thetouchofabuffon. The CLEARVISIONTM
screen showsthe
underwater world with high resolution and detail. The'[MS-i50 also
displays
boat speed, surface watertemperature,
and
distancetravelled
(distance. log). The loran module givesyou a full featured loran re-
ceiver,
complete with plotter andwaypoint navigation capabilities.
Although the[MS-i50has many featuresand functions,
the 'softkey"
menu systemmakes it easyto use. Aboveall, don't be afraid to try
different featuresandfunctions ontheunit. You can'thurtftby press-
ingbuff
ons!
MOUNTING
You caninstall theLMS-150 in anyconvenient location, providedthere
is clearance behind the unit. Place it in positionfirst and tilt itbrIhe
bestviewiitigangle. Thenmark
the holes in the
bracketbase. You can
use woàthscrewsorthrough-bolts
to attachthebracketto the boat.
You mayheed to placea pieceof plywood on the back of thin fiber-
glass panels tosecure themounting, hardware. Makecertainthere is
enough room behindtheunit
toattachthepower
and
transducer
cables.
The smallest holethat will pass one powerortransducerplug is one
inch. Afterdrilling thehole, passthetransducerconnector
upthrough
theholefirst, then passthepower
cable
downthrough it.
Afterroyting the cables, filltheholewith a good marine sealingcam-
pound. Offset thebracket tocoverthe hole.

Forexample, ifyou

protect
boththeunitandthepower
cableintheevent ofashort.
The
powercablehas
three
wires,red,white,andblack. Redisthe
positive
lead, blackisnegative orground. ThewhitewireisusedfortheNMEA
interface.To
usethis
feature,
attacha
shielded,twisted
paircable
fromthe
autopilot or
othermarineequipment's NMEAinterfaceto
thewhitewireon
the[MS-i
50'spowercable. Solder
thetwisted pairsgroundwire and
shield wire to theblackwire ontheLMS-i50's powercable. Do not
connecttheshield wiretotheautopilot. See
yourautopilot's manual for
more
instructions. If
you're
not
going
tousethisfeature, cut
ancitape
the
whitewiretoprevent
ashort.
The[MS-i50hasreverse
polarityprotection. No
damagewill dccurtothe
unitifthe
power
wiresarehooked upbackwards. However,itwon'twork
untilthe
wiringisconnected
properly.
Minimize electrical noiseby routing
thepower cable away from other
possible sources of electrical interference. Oneofthelargest noise
generators istheengine'swiring harness. For.best results, keepthe
powerand transducercables away
fromtheengine wiring.
Attachthespeed/temp sensor's and loran module's cabletothe[MS-
150'spower cable. Tagsonthecables identify boththe loran and the
speed/temperature sensor's connector.
INSTALLATION
-LC-1 Loran-C MODULE
When choosinga mountinglocation, remember to installthe E[C-1
whereit's clearofotherantennas, wires, masts, orotherobstructions.
A high location is preferred, howeverforlightning protection, thean-
tennashouldn't bethehighestpartoftheboat. Theantennashouldbe
mountedvertically. Makecertain itisasfaraway
aspossible
fromVHF
radio antennas.

NOTES:
Improper. performance can also occur ifthe antenna is mountedtoo
closeto metal objects such as tuna towers. Again, a locationthat
placestheLoranassembly in theclearis preferable
toonethat is high
and obstructed.
You must purchasean eight foot stainlesssteel or fiberglasswhip
antenna:. The threadsare standard 3/8-24 forthewhip. A ratchet
mountbase is mostcommonly usedto mounttheLorantotheboat.
The base mounting threadsare conventional 1"-14 machinethread
(NOT
pipethread). This allows theuseofstandardantenna
mounting
hardware. Tightenallhardware securely.
The cable supplied with the LC-1 is thirty feet long. Do not cut the
cable if its too long. Instead, coil and store h outof theway. An
extension cableis available ifthecableistooshort. Askyourdealeror
call your local servicecenterorthe Eagle FactoryCustomer Service
department
formoreinformation.

SPEED/TEMPERATURE SENSOR INSTALLATION
Mount the speed/temp sensor on the boat's transomin a locatien
where the flow ofwater is smoothest. There should be a minimum
amountofturbulenceand airbubbles inthechosen location. Theport
(left)sideofthetransomispreferred,.howeverthestarboard (right)
side
can be used if necessary. Do not mountthe speed sensorbehind
strakes, ribs,orthru-hull
fittings thatwilldisturb theflowofwatertothe
speedsensor. Ina
typicalinstallation,thespeed sensorismountedsix
totwelveinches frpmthecenterline oftheboat. Thesensormustbein
thewater at all timesto function properly. Make certainthechosen
locationisin thewaterevenathighspeedorwhentheboatison
plane.
Oncethe
properlocation hasbean determined, place
thesensoronthe
transomwiththebottomofthesensor flushwiththebottomofthehull.
Markthetransomin the centerofeach slot and drilla 5/32"mounting
hole. Mountthesensor
tothehull with#10stainlesssteelscrews(not
included). Useagoodgrade ofcaulking compound toseal thescrews.
Adjust
thesensorso itisflushwith theunderside ofthehull and tighten
thescrews.
It the base of the transom has a radius, fill the gap between the
transomand thesensorwith caulking compound to insure a smooth
waterflow.
Route the sensor cableto thein-line connector on the sonar unit's
powercableand attach it.

MENU KEY-Thiskeyactivates thefirst menu screenforeachofthe
threemodes -sonar,loran, and plotter. Forexample, ifyou pressthe

upthefirst plotter menu screen.
DISPLAy-General
The lights are onfor about ten seconds whenyou first turn theLMS-
150 on. Menus appearatthesame lime. Tokeepthe lights on, prçss
thekeyadjacent tothe Light label. (Seethe picture
onthenextpage.)
It controls
thebacklighting
usedon the displayand keyboard. Ifyou
don'twantthelights on, waitten seconds andthelights automatically
turn off. The menus also disappear aftertenseconds. You can turn
themoffatnytimeby pressing the CLEAR key.
The Metric menuworksthe same way. Press the key adjacent tothe
Metric
labeltochange
thedepthfromfeettometers. Thisalsochanges
thetemperature displaytodegrees Celsius, speed toknots,and logto
nautical miles.

TheADJDisplaylabelletsyouadjust thedisplay's contrastforthebest
viewingangle. Pressing thiskeygivesyouthecontrastadjustmenu.

Afterthemenusclear, thedisplay appearssimilarto the one.onthe
nextpage. Theword "AUTO" inthedisplays upperleftcorperindi-
cates the automatic feature is on. Asmall note symbol nettothe
"AUTO" indicatormeans the alarm speakeris enabled. Th,é digital

depth displays immediately beneaththeAUTOindicator.
MEMORV-PRESET
The [MS-i50savesallsettings suchas sensifivity, chart speed, alarm
settings,and more in battery backed-up memory. This mèhiory is
retained, evenifthe[MS-i50 isremoved
fromtheboat.
To erasethe!settings, and return the [MS-ISOtothe factory settings,
turntheunitoff, thenpressandholdtheCLEARkey andpresstheON
keyatthesametime. Hold theC[EAR keyuntilyouhearthestarting
beep,then release it The[MS-ISOwillrestart using
the
factory
default
settings. Note:Thisdoesn't erase any waypoints or route. T!!here is
alsoamenu selection that resetsthe[MS-i50. SeetheMenu - Page

FREQUENCY SELECT
Lowrance offers both 50 and 192 kHztransducers forthe[MS-I50.
The192 kHz
frequency
typically
hassuperiortargetresolution,
showing
fish, structure, and bottom definition betterthan50 kHz. However,
the
192 kHzdoesn'tpenetrate
wateras well as 50 kHz,thereforeit won't
goasdeep. Also, 192kHzcone angles
aretypicallynarrowerthan the
50s. Youcandrawafewconclusions fromthesestatements.
1. Use 192 kHz(especially in shallow
water) with awide (20degree)
coneangleforthebestresolution and
targetdefinition. Use a192kHz
narrow
coneangle
transducer
(8degree)
when
operating in mediumto
deep depths.
2. Use the50 kHzindeepwaterorwhere a verywide cone angleis
desired:Using50kHzwhen
fishingwith downriggers
generally
lets you
seethe downriggerweights display on the screen. Lowranceoffers
both a30degreeand45
degree cone angles for50kHz.

SENSITIVITY
Thesensitivitykeyon
theLMS-150controls theunit's
ability
to pick up
echoes. A low sensitivity level excludes muchofthebottominforma-
tion, fish signals, andothertargetinformation High sensitivity levels
enablesyou to seethis detail, but it can also clutterthe screenwith
noise. Typically, the bestsensitivity level shows agood solidbottom
signal
withGRAYLINE®
and someäurface clutter.
The LMS-150 adjusts the sensitivity when it's intheautomatic
mode.
Thiskeeps
asolidbottom signaldisplayed, plus thecapability to show
fishandotherdetail.
However, situations occurwhere itbecomes
necessary
to increase or
decreasethesensitivity. Thistypicallyhappens
when
youwishtosee
moredetail. The
procedure toadjust
itisthesame
whethertheunitis
in
theautomaticormanual mode.

When yureach eitherthemaximum orminimum limit, thespeakerwill
sound analert tone.
Toturnthemenus off, press
thekeyadjacent totheCLEARkeyatthe
bottomleftsideofthe unit.
When usingthe LMS-150 in the dualfrequency mode, a new menu
appears that lets you adjustthe sensitivity and GRAYLINEfor both
frequencies. Simplypressthekeyadjacenttothe50kHz/i92kHzlabel
toadjust
eachside.

The sensitivity menu has up and down arrows, plus a vertical bar
graph. The graph gives an indication of the sensitivity level. The
numberabovethe
uparrowshows thepercentage ofsensitivity
in use.

GRAYLINBTh letsyoudistinguish betweenstrong
andweak echoes. It
"paints" gray ontargets thatare stronger
than a presetvalue. This
allowsyoutotell the difference betweena hardand soft bottom. For
example, asoft,muddy
orweedy bottomreturnsaweaker
signal whibh
displayswith anarrowor nograyline. Ahardbottomreturns a strong
signal whichcausesawide gray line.
If you have two signals of equal size, one with gray and theother
without,the targetwith gray isthestronger signal. Thishelpsdistin-
guishweedsfromtreesonthebottom,
orfishfromstructure.
GRAYLINE® is adjustable. Since GRAYLINE® shows the difference
between strongand weaksignals, adjusting
thesensitivity mayrequire
adifferentGRAYLINE® level, also. The level chosen bytheLMS-15O
at poweron isusuallyadequate formostconditions. Experiment with
yourunittofindthe GRAYLINE setting
that'sbestforyou.
To adjust GRAYLINE press the SENSkey. The sensitivity menu
appears
intheupperleftside ofthe
display,
whiletheGRAYLINE®label
appearsimmediately beneath it. Nowpressthe key adjacent to the
GRAYup arrowtoincrease the graylevel. Pressthe keyadjacent to
thedown arrowtodecreaseit. The percentage ofGRAYLINE®in use
changes as you pressthe arrow keys. The bar chart also gives a
graphical
indicationoftheGRAYLINE®level.

mode. -Bdth thelowerandtheupperlimitare adjustable.

mode, If hecessary, press theAUTO key to switch to the manual
mode:.
Next, press the RANGE
key. Twoarrows appearinthelower
leftcornerofthedisplay. These are therange adjust arrows.. Press

size oftheones on the right. If you switchto the2Xzoom mode,
echoesontheleftsideofthescreenare shown attwicethesizeaâthe
ones ciitheright. The echoes that scroll acrossthescreen are the
exact sameechoeson both sides of the screen. They'resimplyen-
largedoptheleft side. Thisfeaturetracksthebottom, always keeping
itonthedisplay whiletheautQrnatic featureis on. Once
