Thank you for choosing the Mercedes-
Benz hands-free system.
Before you drive off, familiarise yourself with
your hands-free system and read the operat-
ing instructions. This will allow you to fully
enjoy your hands-free system and avoid
endangering yourself and others.
Depending on the model, certain features and
functions of your hands-free system may dif-
fer from those described and depicted.
Mercedes-Benz is constantly updating its
hands-free systems to the state of the art and
thus reserves the right to introduce changes
in design, equipment and technical features
at any time.
You cannot therefore base any claims on the
data, illustrations or descriptions in these
operating instructions.
Your nearest Mercedes-Benz Service Centre
will be happy to assist you if you have any
other questions.
These operating instructions are an integral
part of the vehicle. You should therefore
always keep them in the vehicle and pass
them on to the new owner if you sell the vehi-
cle.

Operating safety
GRisk of accident
You must observe the legal requirements for
the country in which you are driving when
operating a mobile phone in the vehicle.
If it is permitted to operate a mobile phone
while the vehicle is in motion, you must only
operate it when road and traffic conditions
allow. You could otherwise be distracted from
the traffic conditions, cause an accident and
injure yourself and others.
If you use hands-free mode to make a call, you
must continue to drive carefully, close all the
windows and prevent any disruptive noises.
Proper use
Always observe the safety information in this
manual when using the hands-free system
and your mobile phone:
iIf work on electronic equipment and its
software is carried out incorrectly, this
equipment could stop functioning. Even
systems that have not been modified could
be affected because the electronic compo-
nents are connected.
Malfunctioning electronics can severely
impair the operating safety of your vehicle.
iOnly have work or changes on the elec-
tronic components carried out at a quali-
fied specialist workshop which has the nec-
essary specialist knowledge and tools to
carry out the work.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use
a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this
purpose.
In particular, work relevant to safety or on
safety-related systems must be carried out
at a qualified specialist workshop.
Dear radio user,
This electronic device is suitable for operation
by all persons in accordance with valid EU
directives.
The equipment corresponds to the current
European and harmonised national stand-
ards.
This serves as a guarantee that the equip-
ment conforms to the relevant specifications
regarding electromagnetic compatibility.
As a result, interference caused by your
equipment in other electrical/electronic
equipment and interference in your equip-
ment caused by other electrical/electronic
equipment is prevented to a large extent.
The equipment is approved by the vehicle
manufacturer in accordance with European
Automotive EMC Directive 95 / 54 / EC. This
means that correct operation of the equip-
ment in your vehicle is authorised. The equip-
ment does not require certification.
The equipment conforms to the relevant
equipment-specific EMC specifications in
accordance with the following European
standards:
REN 55013
REN 55020

Mercedes-Benz hereby confirms that this
device is compliant with the basic require-
ments and all other relevant regulations
stipulated by Directive 1999/5/EC (RTTE
Directive).

Overview of controls
The Bluetooth® hands-free system is availa-
ble in both the following versions:
RFactory fitted radio
The Sound 5 radio and the hands-free sys-
tem are fitted at the factory. Call volume is
set using the Sound 5 volume control. The
factory fitted radio has two direct dialling
buttons (Y page 19).
RRadio fittings
The hands-free system is fitted at the fac-
tory. Only preparations for fitting the radio
are provided. The call volume is set using
the +/- buttons on the hands-free system.

Radio fittings
The "Radio fittings" version of the hands-free
system has two volume setting buttons in
place of the direct dialling buttons.

Blue status LED C, informs on the status of
the Bluetooth® connection.
In the basic setting, the status LED does not
light up, in order to avoid causing a distrac-
tion. Pressing the ~ button, however, calls
up the status of the Bluetooth® connection.

Basic functions
Activating
The hands-free system is activated automat-
ically with the vehicle ignition. The button illu-
mination is only switched on in night mode.
The hands-free system immediately attempts
to establish a Bluetooth® connection with
your mobile phone. The precondition for a
successful connection via Bluetooth®, is the
previous pairing of the hands-free system
with one or more mobile phones
(Y page 14).
Switching off
Deactivation of the hands-free system is
delayed by the run-on time. During the run-on
time, the hands-free system remains fully
available. The run-on time begins, as soon as
the ignition is switched off. The run-on time is
stopped during a call for up to two hours.
After two hours have passed, the hands-free
system is deactivated, regardless.
The run-on time can be set at a Mercedes-
Benz Service Centre using the vehicle diag-
nosis system. The standard setting is 30 sec-
onds.
Pairing the mobile phone – quick
guide
XOn the mobile phone, activate Bluetooth®
and select the "Mobile phone visible" set-
ting (N mobile phone operating instruc-
tions).
XPress the 6 and ~ buttons on the
hands-free system simultaneously for
three seconds.
XEnter the access code 3732 (standard set-
ting) into the mobile phone.
A detailed description of the pairing proce-
dure can be found in the "Mobile phone
pairing" section (Y page 14).

At a glance

Charging bracket
Optionally, you can place a charging bracket
on the hands-free system. The charging
bracket provides a secure location for the
mobile phone and charges the battery care-
fully.
Another advantage of the charging bracket is
the connection with an external aerial which
can improve reception and reduce the spread
of electromagnetic radiation from the mobile
in the vehicle interior.
XTo insert: position the charging bracket
onto the catch lug of the hands-free system
moving from the bottom to the top.
XPress charging bracket onto the hands-free
system until it engages audibly.
XTo remove: holding the charging bracket
firmly, press the catch lug whilst removing
the charging bracket simultaneously.
Audio playback (MP3)
If your mobile phone supports the playback
of music files, you can play back music files
stored on the mobile phone via the hands-free
system (audio streaming).
Audio playback (track selection, start, stop,
pause, skip) can then only be controlled using
the mobile phone keypad. During an active/
incoming call, playback of the current track is
paused (if your mobile phone supports this
function).
XTo interrupt audio playback via the
hands-free system: press the ~ but-
ton (if there is no currently active call).
Connecting a navigation device (PND)
A navigation device can be connected to the
hands-free system, even if a mobile phone is
already connected to it.
As with the mobile phone, the navigation
device must be paired with the hands-free
system once. This pairing procedure is
required so that the hands-free system can
identify the Bluetooth® device (Y page 14).

device pairing process, see the operating
instructions of the navigation device.
iYou can find out which navigation devices
are supported by the hands-free system at
a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
After connecting successfully, you will hear
the navigation announcements over the radio
speakers.
If there is an incoming call, the hands-free
system switches over to the telephone auto-
matically. After the call has ended, the hands-
free system switches back to the navigation
device.
iIf a mobile phone and a navigation device
are connected to the hands-free system
simultaneously, audio playback is not pos-
sible.

Mobile phone pairing
Initial operation
Before it is used for the first time, the hands-
free system is set so that it is "invisible" to
other Bluetooth® devices.
Pairing a mobile phone
You must pair a mobile phone once with the
hands-free system. This pairing procedure is
required so that the hands-free system can
identify the Bluetooth® mobile phone.
Depending on the mobile phone used, differ-
ing steps are required to carry out this proc-
ess (N mobile phone operating instructions).
XActivate Bluetooth® on the mobile phone.
XSwitch on the ignition.
The hands-free system is activated auto-
matically.
XPress the 6 "Accept" button and the
~ "End call" button simultaneously for
at least three seconds.
The blue status LED now flashes slowly and
the hands-free system is visible for the
mobile phone.
Once the mobile phone has found the
hands-free system, it shows the hands-free
system in its list of Bluetooth® devices.
XSelect the hands-free system to be con-
nected to on the mobile phone:
The mobile phone prompts you to enter a
four-digit access code.
iThe default value of the access code is
3732. A Mercedes-Benz Service Centre
can alter the access code via the vehicle
diagnostics system. This pairing informa-
tion is stored permanently in the hands-
free system.
XEnter the access code using the mobile
phone keypad.
iIf the mobile phone is connected to the
hands-free system, the blue status LED
lights up for 10 seconds and then goes out
(standard setting).
If there is a problem during the pairing
process, the blue status LED flashes rap-
idly.
On some mobile phones the connection is
not established automatically but must be
specifically activated on the mobile phone
(N mobile phone operating instructions).
XTo call up the Bluetooth® connection
status: press the ~ "End call" button
on the hands-free system briefly (if there is
no currently active call).
iAny Mercedes-Benz Service Centre can
set the display duration of the Bluetooth®
connection status via the vehicle diagnos-
tics.
Allocating/reconnecting a mobile
phone
The mobile phone will connect automatically
to the hands-free system in the future, if you
are in the Bluetooth® signal area of the hands-
free system. Additionally, Bluetooth® must be
activated on the mobile phone and there must
not be any other device connected to the
hands-free system.
iOn some mobile phones, the connection
is not established automatically but must
be confirmed each time on the mobile
phone. This can be avoided, by activating
the "always allow" option on the mobile
phone.
Up to four mobile phones can be paired to
the hands-free system, but only one can be
actively connected to the hands-free sys-
tem at a time.
If a fifth mobile phone is paired to the
hands-free system, one of the mobile
phones is removed from the memory of the
hands-free system. This is always the
device that has not been connected to the
hands-free system for the longest time.

Bluetooth connection

Automatic reconnection
This function re-establishes a connection to a
paired (identified) mobile phone automati-
cally. Up to four mobile phones may be iden-
tified. The mobile phone last connected has
the highest priority. The first connection
attempt is made with this mobile phone. If
this attempt is unsuccessful, the next mobile
phone in the list is selected. If a connection
cannot be established, the "Automatic recon-
nection" function is restarted after 30 sec-
onds.
Ending the connection
An existing Bluetooth® connection can be
disconnected using either the mobile phone
or the hands-free system.
XPress the 6 "Accept" button and the
~ "End call" button simultaneously for
at least three seconds.
The blue Bluetooth® LED flashes slowly and
the Bluetooth® connection is interrupted.
The hands-free system remains visible for
reconnection, however, the"Automatic
reconnection" function is deactivated. A
new connection must be established via
the mobile phone.
XTo reconnect: select the hands-free sys-
tem from the list of Bluetooth® devices to
be connected to in the mobile phone

Basic telephone functions
Incoming call
iIf there is an incoming call, the active
audio source is muted. After the call is
ended, the audio source is switched on
again and in replayed at the original vol-
ume. In the radio display the PHONE mes-
sage is shown (factory fitted radio version
only).
If there is an incoming call, the green LED in
the 6 button (accept) and the red LED in
the ~ (end call) button lights up.
Accepting a call
XPress the 6 button.
During the call, only the red LED in the
~ button lights up.
XTo end a call: press the ~ button.
Rejecting a call
XPress the ~ button.
Calling
XEnter or select the desired phone number
via the keypad or the phone book of the
mobile phone.
XPress the 6 button.
Dialling starts.
Redialling
XPress the 6 button (not when there is
an incoming call or during a call).
The last phone number dialled is redialled.
Toggling
Toggling is a service which allows you to
switch back and forth between two active
calls. During a call, a second incoming call is
signalled by a call-waiting tone.
XTo accept the second call: press the
6 button.
The second call is now active. The first call
is now "waiting".
XTo switch between both calls: press the
6 button.
XTo end an active call: press the ~ but-
ton.
The call that has been waiting is now active.
iRecommendation: only use the toggling
feature in conjunction with the hands-free
system, as using the mobile phone directly
may cause malfunctions.
Deactivating the hands-free function
(private mode)
During an incoming call or an active call, you
can interrupt the audio connection between
the mobile phone and the hands-free system.
The conversation is then conducted via the
mobile phone and not over the vehicle speak-
ers (private mode). You can only activate "pri-
vate mode" on the mobile phone using the

Using the telephone
