Safety
Introduction
Read and follow these safety instructions. Task- and equipment-specic warnings,
cautions, and instructions are included in equipment documentation where appropriate.
Make sure all equipment documentation, including these instructions, is accessible to all
persons operating or servicing equipment.
Qualied Personnel
Equipment owners are responsible for making sure that Nordson® equipment is installed,
operated, and serviced by qualied personnel. Qualied personnel are those employees
or contractors who are trained to safely perform their assigned tasks. They are familiar
with all relevant safety rules and regulations and are physically capable of performing
their assigned tasks.
Intended Use
Use of Nordson® equipment in ways other than those described in the documentation
supplied with the equipment may result in injury to persons or damage to property.
Some examples of unintended use of equipment include:
• Using incompatible materials
• Making unauthorized modications
• Removing or bypassing safety guards or interlocks
• Using incompatible or damaged parts
• Using unapproved auxiliary equipment
• Operating equipment in excess of maximum ratings
Regulations and Approvals
Make sure all equipment is rated and approved for the environment in which it is used.
Nordson® equipment warranties may be voided if instructions for installation, operation,
and service are not followed.
All phases of equipment installation must comply with all federal, state, and local codes.

Personal Safety
To prevent injury follow these instructions.
• Do not operate or service equipment unless you are qualied.
• Do not operate equipment unless safety guards, doors, or covers are intact and
automatic interlocks are operating properly. Do not bypass or disarm any safety
devices.
• Keep clear of moving equipment. Before adjusting or servicing moving equipment, shut
o󰀨 the power supply and wait until the equipment comes to a complete stop. Lock out
power and secure the equipment to prevent unexpected movement.
• Relieve (bleed o󰀨) hydraulic and pneumatic pressure before adjusting or servicing
pressurized systems or components. Disconnect, lock out, and tag switches before
servicing electrical equipment.
• While operating manual spray guns, make sure you are grounded. Wear electrically
conductive gloves or a grounding strap connected to the gun handle or other true earth
ground. Do not wear or carry metallic objects such as jewelry or tools.
• If you receive even a slight electrical shock, shut down all electrical or electrostatic
equipment immediately. Do not restart the equipment until the problem has been
identied and corrected.
• Obtain and read Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all materials used. Follow the
manufacturer’s instructions for safe handling and use of materials, and use
recommended personal protection devices.
• Make sure the spray area is adequately ventilated.
• To prevent injury, be aware of less-obvious dangers in the workplace that often cannot
be completely eliminated, such as hot surfaces, sharp edges, energized electrical
circuits, and moving parts that cannot be enclosed or otherwise guarded for practical
reasons.
• To avoid tipping, ensure Dual IPS Meter Assembly is lagged to the oor with suitable
fasteners prior to being placed into service.

High Pressure Fluids
High-pressure uids, unless they are safely contained, are extremely hazardous. Always
relieve uid pressure before adjusting or servicing high pressure equipment. A jet of high-
pressure uid can cut like a knife and cause serious bodily injury, amputation, or death.
Fluids penetrating the skin can also cause toxic poisoning.
If you su󰀨er a uid injection injury, seek medical care immediately. If possible, provide a
copy of the SDS for the injected uid to the health care provider.
The National Spray Equipment Manufacturers Association has created a wallet card that
you should carry when you are operating high-pressure spray equipment. These cards
are supplied with your equipment. The following is the text of this card:
WARNING:Any injury caused by high pressure liquid can be serious. If you are injured
or even suspect an injury:
• Go to an emergency room immediately.
• Tell the doctor that you suspect an injection injury.
• Show them this card
• Tell them what kind of material you were spraying
MEDICAL ALERT — AIRLESS SPRAY WOUNDS: NOTE TO PHYSICIAN
Injection in the skin is a serious traumatic injury. It is important to treat the injury surgically
as soon as possible. Do not delay treatment to research toxicity. Toxicity is a concern
with some exotic coatings injected directly into the bloodstream. Consultation with a
plastic surgeon or a reconstructive hand surgeon may be advisable. The seriousness
of the wound depends on where the injury is on the body, whether the substance
hit something on its way in and deected causing more damage, and many other
variables including skin microora residing in the paint or gun which are blasted into the
wound. If the injected paint contains acrylic latex and titanium dioxide that damage the
tissue’s resistance to infection, bacterial growth will ourish. The treatment that doctors
recommend for an injection injury to the hand includes immediate decompression of the
closed vascular compartments of the hand to release the underlying tissue distended by
the injected paint, judicious wound debridement, and immediate antibiotic treatment.

Fire Safety
To avoid a re or explosion, follow these instructions.
• Shut down all equipment immediately if you notice static sparking or arcing. Do not
restart the equipment until the cause has been identied and corrected.
• Do not smoke, weld, grind, or use open ames where ammable materials are being
used or stored.
• Do not heat materials to temperatures above those recommended by the
manufacturer. Make sure heat monitoring and limiting devices are working properly.
• Provide adequate ventilation to prevent dangerous concentrations of volatile particles
or vapors. Refer to local codes or your material SDS for guidance.
• Do not disconnect live electrical circuits when working with ammable materials. Shut
o󰀨 power at a disconnect switch rst to prevent sparking.
• Know where emergency stop buttons, shuto󰀨 valves, and re extinguishers are
located. If a re starts in a spray booth, immediately shut o󰀨 the spray system and
exhaust fans.
• Shut o󰀨 electrostatic power and ground the charging system before adjusting,
cleaning, or repairing electrostatic equipment.
• Clean, maintain, test, and repair equipment according to the instructions in your
equipment documentation.
• Use only replacement parts that are designed for use with original equipment. Contact
your Nordson representative for parts information and advice.

Grounding
WARNING:Operating faulty electrostatic equipment is hazardous and can cause
electrocution, re, or explosion. Make resistance checks part of your periodic
maintenance program. If you receive even a slight electrical shock or notice static
sparking or arcing, shut down all electrical or electrostatic equipment immediately. Do
not restart the equipment until the problem has been identied and corrected.
Grounding inside and around the booth openings must comply with NFPA requirements
for Class II, Division 1 or 2 Hazardous Locations. Refer to NFPA 33, NFPA 70 (NEC
articles 500, 502, and 516), and NFPA 77.
• All electrically conductive objects in spray areas shall be electrically connected to
ground with a resistance of not more than 1 megohm as measured with an instrument
that applies at least 500 volts to the circuit being evaluated.
• Equipment to be grounded includes, but is not limited to, the oor of the spray area,
operator platforms, hoppers, photoeye supports,and blow-o󰀨 nozzles. Personnel
working in the spray area must be grounded.
• There is ignition potential from a charged human body. Personnel standing on a
painted surface, such as an operator platform, or wearing non-conductive shoes, are
not grounded. Personnel must wear shoes with conductive soles or use a ground
strap to maintain a connection to ground when working with or around electrostatic
equipment.
• Operators must maintain skin-to-handle contact between their hand and the gun
handle to prevent shocks while operating manual electrostatic spray guns. If gloves
must be worn, cut away the palm or ngers, wear electrically conductive gloves, or
wear a grounding strap connected to the gun handle or other true earth ground.
• Shut o󰀨 electrostatic power supplies and ground gun electrodes before making
adjustments or cleaning powder spray guns.
• Connect all disconnected equipment, ground cables, and wires after servicing
equipment.

Halogenated Hydrocarbon Solvent Hazards
Do not use halogenated hydrocarbon solvents in a pressurized system that contains
aluminum components. Under pressure, these solvents can react with aluminum and
explode, causing injury, death, or property damage. Halogenated hydrocarbon solvents
contain one or more of the following elements:

Check your material MSDS or contact your material supplier for more information. If you
must use halogenated hydrocarbon solvents, contact your Nordson® representative for
information about compatible equipment components.
Action in the Event of a Malfunction
If a system or any equipment in a system malfunctions, shut o󰀨 the system immediately
and perform the following steps:
• Disconnect and lock out electrical power. Close pneumatic shuto󰀨 valves and relieve
pressure.
• Identify the reason for the malfunction and correct it before restarting the equipment.
Disposal
Dispose of equipment and material used in operation and servicing according to federal,
state, and local codes.

Overview
NOTE:The Smart Gun Applicator Assembly is referred to as a smart gun throughout the
remainder of this manual.
See Figure 2-1 and refer to Table 2-1.
The smart gun is designed to dispense one or two materials in multiple directions and
into size restrictive areas. The smart gun is controlled by and mounted to a specic robot
determined by the customer. The dispense rate and dispense pressure during operation
is controlled by controller operator settings. The smart gun is completely pneumatically
controlled. The operator must be able to provide the minimum air requirements for the
smart gun to work properly in an application.
The meter consists of the following basic components: smart gun, swivel assembly,
torque bracket, nozzle assembly, and the vision system mount bracket. To construct a
complete system, other components are added to the basic applicator.

1Vision mount system -This mount system assists the smart gun by supporting the assembly for precise dispensing
and to keep the nozzle from moving during dispensing.
2 Main material inlet - The main material inlet ports are 1/2” NPT. There are two main material inlet ports.
3 Torque bracket - Applies stability for the swivel when the smart gun is rotating in an application.
4 Robot mounting plate - Mounts the smart gun to the application robot.
5 Swivel assembly - Ensures the smart gun can rotate and reach into restricted areas.
6 Main air inlet - The main air input for each of the integrated smart gun valves.
7 Swivel air connections - Air connections from the swivel to the smart gun integrated valves.
8Common valve port - Common air to close port to all three integrated valves. This port supplies air to the top section
of the air cylinders to keep the valves closed.
9Valve ports - Air to open ports for each of the integrated valves. These ports supply air to the bottom section of the
air cylinders to keep the valves closed.
10 Smart gun subassembly - Detachable subassembly contains serviceable valves and valve needle seat area.
11 Material bleed port - This port allows air to be bled prior to dispensing material from the smart gun.
12 Smart gun basic assembly - The basic assembly does not include the swivel assembly. The smart gun consists of
three integrated valves, which controls the ow of material to each directional nozzle.
13 Smart gun nozzle - Allows the operator to dispense material in multiple directions and at multiple angles.

Theory of Operation
Refer to Table 2-2 and see Figure 2-2.
Integrated power valves, located on the inside of the smart gun base and the valve
manifold, control the material’s ow from the supply gallery. The integrated power valves
are key components to the operation of the smart gun assembly.
Some smart guns are tted with a swivel assembly. This swivel assembly provides
precise movement and allows the smart gun to dispense in restrictive areas. The swivel
assembly has four air supply ports and a grease weep port. These ports feed air supply
to each of the three integrated valves. Three of the ports open each valve individually and
the fourth port, common to all valves, supplies air to close all the valves simultaneously.
The smart gun was designed and integrated with the swivel to prevent the air lines from
becoming wrapped around the smart gun base. The nozzle end is an application specic
piece. Standard nozzles will have three outlet ports. Each outlet port will dispense at a
di󰀨erent angle. The three common angles are 45, 90 and 0 degrees. These angles and
the long neck of the smart gun are the keys to dispensing material in restrictive areas.
To dispense material, the common air to close valve ports have air pressure released/
exhausted. This will relieve air pressure on every valve, not just the preferred valve. The
valve springs in the smart gun will maintain pressure to keep the valves closed. At this
time, air can be supplied to the preferred valve to dispense material. Each cartridge valve
within the smart gun assembly is opened independently via a unique air port labeled 1, 2,
and 3. Each cartridge valve also has a spring to close. The spring also prevents the valve
from opening when not in use. All valves can be held closed via one common air line that
connects to any port labeled 4.

observing equipment. The sudden release of air or uid can cause damage to eyes.
• Allow only qualied personnel to perform the following tasks. Follow the safety
instructions in this document and all other related documentation.
• Do not remove any covers during operation. The moving parts under these covers
could cause injury to personnel.
• Relieve system and material pressure before disconnecting hoses.
• Shut o󰀨 and lock out power to the smart gun prior to installing smart gun to robot.
• Never exceed the maximum operating temperature of 180 F (82 C).
WARNING:Any material injected into esh can cause severe injury or death. Keep
body parts away from material discharge ports. If injection occurs, seek medical attention
immediately.

lubricants can promote seal failure.

To Robot
M5 mounting screws and lock washers are provided by the end user for installing the
smart gun applicator to a automation robot. Hoist the smart gun applicator to the end of
the robotic arm. Mount to the face plate of the robotic arm.
Pneumatic Connections
1. Connect at least 80 psi (5.51 bar, 0.55 MPa) of clean shop air to the main air inlet of
the pneumatic system feeding the smart gun.
2. Connect 1/4” air tubing from the pneumatic controller to each main air inlets on the
swivel assembly.
3. Connect 1/4” air tubing from the swivel air outlet ports to each integrated valve air inlet
port.
Material and Other Connections
See Figure 4-1 and refer to Table 4-1.
1. Connect material outlet hose of supply to material inlet port of the smart gun.
NOTE:The material supply port is a 1/2” NPT port.
2. Ensure all connections to the robot are secure.
3. Ensure all connections to air and material are properly connected before dispensing in
the application.

Operation

• The surface of the Smart Gun needles are ground to specication and should be
protected from damage during handling. Scratches, dents, and other damage should
be avoided or repaired to obtain the maximum life of the valve seals and bearings.

Startup
1. Make sure all ttings, connections, and air lines are tightened securely. Refer to
Installation for additional information.
2. Connect main air supply hose and set main air input regulator to 80 psi (5.51 bar, 0.56
MPa) ) minimum.
3. Connect material supply hoses to material inlet ports and start supply, if necessary.
Refer to the supply documentation for additional information.
4. Start the controller, if necessary. Refer to the controller manual for additional
information.
5. Start any temperature controller units on the system, if necessary. Refer to the
temperature controller manual for additional information.
6. Wait until the controller gives a, “Dispense Ready”, signal.
Shutdown
1. Turn o󰀨 and relieve pressure from any supply on the system. Refer to the supply
component manuals for additional information.
2. Relieve the air and material pressure from the Smart Gun.
3. Turn o󰀨 any temperature controller units on the system. Refer to the temperature
controller manual for additional information.
4. Turn o󰀨 the system controller. Refer to the controller manual for additional information.
NOTE:Refer to the System Manual supplied with the Smart Gun for additional
information.
