Dear Mother,
Breast milk is the best food for a baby
during the first six months of its life. To
enable you and your baby to enjoy every
moment of breastfeeding, NUK has
developed a range of practical and
comfortable breastfeeding aids for the
systematic support of breastfeeding.
The NUK Luna electric breast pump is
intended as an aid for you and your baby if
you are unable to breastfeed naturally on a
temporary or permanent basis. Please take
a few minutes to read carefully through
these operating instructions before using
your NUK Luna Electric Breast Pump for the
first time.
We wish you and your baby all the best.
1. Important Information Before First Use

3.3 NUK Breast Milk Container
• If the breast milk container is damaged
on the inside (e.g. by scratches), it
should be replaced for hygiene
reasons.
• Any individual parts not currently in
use must be stored out of the reach of
children (choking hazard).
• Tea or juices may discolour breast milk
container and accessories.
• Only administer food and drink in the
quantity and consistency
recommended by the respective
manufacturer.
• Do not microwave closed breast milk
containers filled with feed (risk of
explosion/material damage). Heating
in this way could cause the contents of
the breast milk container to explode.
Uneven heating carries a risk of
scalding.
• NUK Breast Milk Containers and teats
are only compatible with the
associated NUK FIRST CHOICE system.
3.4 NUK Teat
• Clean and sterilise the teat thoroughly
before using for the first time and
before each subsequent use.

recommended for sterilising.
• When boiling, check that there is
sufficient liquid in the pan to prevent
damage (5 minutes boiling time is
sufficient).
Mipu LUNA Cluster 2.book Seite 6 Freitag, 17. Mai 2013 3:18 15

7
• Washing in a dishwasher is not
recommended, as detergent may
damage or deform the teat.
For your child's safety and health:
WARNING!
• Store in a hygienic environment and
away from direct light sources.
• Always check food temperature before
feeding.
• Always use this product with adult
supervision.
• Never use feeding teats as a soother.
Continuous and prolonged sucking of
fluids will cause tooth decay.
• Do not dip the teat in sweetened
liquids or medicine.
• Check the teat before each use by
pulling it in all directions - especially
when children are teething. Discard
the teat at the first sign of tearing or
biting damage, as there is a risk of
small parts becoming detached and
causing choking.
• For reasons of hygiene and safety,
teats should be replaced every 1 to 2
months.
• Use teat only in combination with the
NUK Breast Milk Container or NUK
FIRST CHOICE Bottles. Both the NUK
Teat and the NUK Breast Milk

5. Cleaning and Sterilising
Hygiene is the top priority when
handling breast milk and all
parts which come into contact
with it. You should therefore
only use a pump that is clean and
sterilised.
5.1 After each use
• Parts 1to 10 (not parts 11 to 20)
should be washed thoroughly in water
and sterilised immediately after
every use.
5.2 Cleaning (Figure Ain reverse order)
Caution! Unplug mains adapter 19 from
the wall socket before cleaning.
Caution! Clean lip valve 5carefully. We
recommend just rinsing off the lip valve
and boiling it to sterilise. Cleaning
implements may lead to damage.
1. If you are using silicone cushion 1,
release this fully from breast shield 3.
2. Unscrew motor unit 13 and
connection ring 4from breast milk
container 6.
3. Remove lip valve 5from the underside
of the breast shield 3.
4. Unscrew connection ring 4from motor
unit 13.
5. Take motor unit 13 off breast shield 3.
6. Remove valve 2from breast shield 3.
7. Wash parts 1to 10 (not parts 11 to 20)
under running water and rinse.
You can also use a little mild detergent
(e.g. NUK Baby Bottle Cleanser).
Milk residues may damage the
material and result in microbial
growth.
8. Wipe motor unit 13 with a damp
cloth.
Caution! Never immerse the motor
unit and the mains adapter in water, as
this will damage the electronics.
5.3 Sterilising
Before sterilising, clean as described in the
section entitled “5.2 Cleaning (Figure A in
reverse order)”.
Important! Under no circumstances
sterilise the stand, the motor unit or the
mains adapter (parts 11 to 20), as this
would deform the material and/or damage
the electronics.
• Use a NUK Steam Steriliser. Follow the
operating instructions associated with
the device. Alternatively,
• boil the parts for 5 minutes in a pan of
vigorously boiling water. Ensure there
is sufficient water in the pan to avoid
damage.
• Only the NUK Microwave Steam
Steriliser should be used for sterilising
in a microwave. Follow the
manufacturer's instructions when
using any sterilisers or sterilising
solution in order to prevent damage to
the product.
Important! The sterilised parts must be
thoroughly cooled down and completely
dry before being reassembled and used
again.

3. Position the inter-
changeable plug so
that its grooves meet
the contacts on the
mains adapter.
4. Slide the plug downwards until the
locking mechanism audibly engages.
7.3 Battery operation
For battery operation you need 3
batteries of the AAA 1.5 V type. We do not
recommend operating the device with
rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable
batteries usually have less charge capacity
than disposable batteries, with the result
that the pump fails to achieve full output
after a very short time. Moreover, any
rechargeable batteries inserted will not be
recharged. When you are operating the
pump using batteries, the warning lamp 14
will warn you that power is too low. You
need to change the batteries as soon as this
lamp is red. If the batteries become
completely discharged, warning lamp 14 is
no longer able to come on, as the pump
switches off because there is not enough
power.
1. Open the battery compartment at
catch 16.
2. Insert the batteries, ensuring that they
are correctly positioned in the battery
compartment according to the +and –
symbols!
3. Close the battery compartment:
push the two "hooks" of
the lid into the relevant
openings in the motor
unit and then close the
lid so that catch 16
engages audibly.
Note: The device may not be operated
without the battery compartment lid
Caution! The batteries should be removed
if the device is not going to be used for an
extended period to prevent leaking
batteries causing damage to the device.
8. Operation (Figure C)
8.1 Expressing milk
Caution! As hygiene is of particular
importance, please always wash your hands
before expressing milk and observe the
advice in section “10. Hygiene Tips” on
page 13.
Important!
1. To start with, turn the suction strength
controller 18 to the lowest suction
strength by rotating the ring towards
the "–” symbol. You can then easily
increase suction strength as you
express.
2. Switch on the breast pump by pressing
On/Off button 15 once.
3. Position breast shield 3on your breast
so that your nipple is in the centre of
the shield. Gently press the breast
shield to ensure a good seal when
expressing. Hold the pump as upright
as possible as you do this.
– = low suction strength
+ = high suction strength
Mipu LUNA Cluster 2.book Seite 10 Freitag, 17. Mai 2013 3:18 15

11
Note: If you hold the pump at too
great an angle, or if the pump topples
over, it will switch off automatically.
The pump has a 2-phase pumping
rhythm to simulate a baby's natural
sucking rhythm when breastfeeding.
The phases can be selected
individually.
Phase 1: The sucking rhythm is rapid and
stimulating during this phase to stimulate
the milk flow.
Phase 2: To switch from Phase 1 to Phase 2,
press On/Off button 15 a second time.
During Phase 2, the pump sucks in a slow
and intensive rhythm ensuring maximum
milk flow. The combination of the 2 phases
ensures efficient expressing.
4. Adjust the suction strength using the
suction strength regulator 18 until the
optimum suction strength is attained.
If the suction strength is too weak,
turn the suction strength regulator 18
towards the "+" symbol.
If the suction is too strong, turn it
towards the "–" symbol.
Note: Please note that the breast
pump has a higher suction strength in
Phase 2, so do not set suction strength
too high at first.
Caution! To maintain function, express
only enough milk so that when
collected in the breast milk container,
it does not contact the bottom edge of
lip valve 5.
5. Press On/Off button 15 a third time to
complete the expressing operation
and switch off the pump.
Note: If you want to interrupt
expressing without switching off the
pump, simply place a finger between
your breast and the breast shield to
break the vacuum.
Note: You can switch to the desired
phase at any point by pressing On/Off
button 15 again.
6. After expressing, place the milk pump
in stand 11 otherwise the pump might
topple over.
7. If you have been operating the device
using mains adapter 19, take mains
adapter 19 out of the wall socket to
disconnect the device completely from
the power supply.
8. Unscrew breast milk container 6from
connection ring 4/the motor unit.
Ensure you keep the breast milk
container upright in the process.
9. Immediately after expressing, wash
the individual parts (see “5.Cleaning
and Sterilising“ on page8).
8.2 Feeding expressed milk
Screw teat 9and screw ring 10 onto breast
milk container 6.
8.3 Storing expressed milk
1. To store the milk, secure the breast
milk container 6with the sealing disc 7
provided, which should be screwed
Mipu LUNA Cluster 2.book Seite 11 Freitag, 17. Mai 2013 3:18 15

12
onto the breast milk container using
the screw ring 10.
Caution! It is essential to follow the
instructions in the section entitled
“11. Storing Milk” on page 13.
2. Use a freezer pen to write the date
and time of expressing on a label.
3. Stick the label onto the NUK breast
milk container.
9. Tips for Successful Expressing
Correct expressing takes practice. You will
first need to get used to your new pump.
9.1 Frequency
How often you need to express depends on
the reason for expressing. If you will be
apart from your child and/or want to
sustain milk production, the natural
breastfeeding rhythm should be
maintained. You should therefore express 6
to 8 times daily, including once during the
night. In all other cases you should express
entirely according to your personal wishes
and requirements.
9.2 Method
Milk should be expressed from each breast
in turn. The 2-phase pumping system of
this electric breast pump simulates a baby's
natural sucking rhythm.
In Phase 1, the suction rhythm is rapid and
stimulating to trigger the let-down reflex.
This simulates a baby's sucking which
consists of rapid sucking movements at the
start.
During Phase 2, the breast pump sucks in a
slow and more intensive rhythm, ensuring
maximum milk flow. This corresponds to
your baby's drinking behaviour. As soon as
a baby's initial thirst is quenched, it
switches to a calm, slow and intensive
sucking action to drink its fill.
If the milk flow drops:
• Change breast
• or try to stimulate the let-down reflex
again by selecting Phase 1 again. To do
this, press On/Off button 15 twice.
The amount of time needed to express milk
will vary considerably from one person to
another.
9.3 Quantity of milk
Don't be surprised if it takes a little while
for the milk to start to flow properly at
first. This is not unusual. In fact it is quite
normal because
milk production adapts itself to daily
requirements.
This means that the quantity of milk
produced may vary considerably.
• Ensure you drink plenty of liquid
yourself.
• Do not set suction strength too high. A
higher suction strength does not
increase the quantity of milk
produced.
9.4 Let-down reflex
During natural breastfeeding, placing the
baby on the breast stimulates the let-down
reflex and milk begins to flow. You can also
stimulate the let-down reflex as follows:
• Find yourself a quiet place to sit,
where you can relax fully when using
the breast pump.
• Adopt a comfortable and relaxed
sitting position.

• Place a warm compress (e.g. NUK Cool
& Warm Gel Breast Compress) on your
breast for a few minutes, to relax the
tissue, and massage your breast.
• Ensure you have eye contact with your
baby. If this is not possible, look at a
photo of your baby.
• The let-down reflex triggers milk flow
in both breasts simultaneously. You
can use the NUK Breast Milk
Collection Shell to collect breast milk
leaking from the breast you are not
currently expressing.
10. Hygiene Tips
Hygiene is especially important when using
the breast pump. This applies to all the
individual pump parts as well as to your
own personal hygiene. We recommend
washing your nipples in clean water daily.
Soap should preferably not be used, as it
may irritate the nipples.
11. Storing Milk
11.1 NUK Breast Milk Container
If the breast milk is not used immediately,
you must seal the filled breast milk
container firmly and store it in the
refrigerator or freeze it.
Caution! Do not place the entire NUK
Luna electric breast pump in the
refrigerator, just the breast milk
container 6with screw ring 10 and sealing
disc 7.
Breast milk may be chilled, frozen and
defrosted in the breast milk container. The
container may also be used for warming
and feeding. It is important that you follow
the instructions about handling breast milk
which is provided below.
Note: When freezing breast milk, do not
fill the container with more than 150 ml (5
fl oz), as breast milk expands as it freezes
and the container could burst.

11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk
•Caution! If transporting chilled breast
milk make sure that it stays chilled at
all times, otherwise the milk could go
off and be harmful to your baby. Use a
cooler bag with ice packs, for example.
•Caution! Do not use a microwave to
defrost breast milk, as this can destroy
valuable nutrients and damage the
container material (risk of explosion).
Uneven heating may result in scalding!
• To achieve the correct drinking
temperature of approx. 37 °C, put the
container of defrosted breast milk in
the baby food warmer.
Note: The container must be open to
prevent pressure build-up as the milk
warms up.
• Shake the milk gently before feeding
so that milk and milk fat are properly
mixed again.
• Defrosted, warmed or unused milk
must be disposed of and not refrozen.
• If you express breast milk more than
once within a period of 24 hours, the
freshly expressed milk may be added
to the previously cooled breast milk.
However freshly expressed milk must
be cooled down before being added
to milk that is already cool. The
temperatures must be the same
(cold on cold).
• Consult your health visitor, midwife,
doctor or pharmacist for detailed
information about long-term storage.
• You can find more information about
breastfeeding on our NUK website
(www.nuk.com).

13. Technical Data
14. Disposal
In the European Union, the
symbol of a crossed-out
wheelie bin means that the
product must be disposed of at
a separate waste collection
point. This applies to this
product and to all accessories marked with
this symbol. Products labelled in this way
must not be disposed of with normal
household waste, but should be taken to a
collection point for recycling electric and
electronic equipment.
Pump makes
unusual noises
Lip valve cannot process the
amount of milk flowing
Reduce suction strength. If milk flow is
high, a low suction strength is adequate
to express efficiently
The pump will make a
rattling noise, if shaken,
which comes from the
automatic cut-out.
This rattling noise is normal and has no
affect on the pump's function.
