DRAWING ATTACHMENT
This instruction manual is for the Olympus SZX-DA drawing attachment. To ensure the safety,
obtain optimum performance and familiarize yourself fully with the use of this product, we
recommend you study this manual thoroughly before operating the equipment. Retain this
instruction manual in an easily accessible place near the work desk for future reference.

IMPORTANT
1Getting Ready
1. This manual describes the SZX-DA drawing attachment only. Before using this equipment with the SZX microscope and
associated options, make sure that you have carefully read and understood the corresponding manuals, and understand
how to use all components of the microscopic system in combination.
2. This attachment is a precision instrument. Handle it with care and avoid subjecting it to sudden or severe impact.
3. Do not use the attachment anywhere where it may be subjected to direct sunlight, high temperature and humidity, dust or
vibrations.
2Maintenance and Storage
1. Clean all glass components by wiping gently with gauze. To remove fingerprints or oil smudges, wipe with gauze slightly
moistened with a mixture of ether (70%) and alcohol (30%).
Since solvents such as ether and alcohol are highly flammable, they must be handled carefully. Be sure to keep
these chemicals away from open flames or potential sources of electrical sparks —— for example, electrical equipment
that is being switched on or off. Also remember to always use these chemicals only in a well-ventilated room.
2. Do not use organic solvents to clean non-optical components. If smudges are difficult to clean, wipe them with a soft cloth
slightly moistened with a diluted neutral detergent.
3. Never disassemble any part of the unit as this could cause malfunctions or reduced performance.

ASSEMBLY
The diagram below shows how to connect this attachment to the microscopic system. The numbers in the diagram indicate
the order of assembly.
# When assembling the microscopic system, make sure that all parts are free of dust and dirt. Avoid scratching any
parts or touching the glass surfaces.

OBSERVATION PROCEDURE

1Placing the Drawing Sheet
Place a drawing sheet directly below the mirror tube and fix so that it does
not move.
2Adjusting the Mirror Tube (Fig. 1)
Loosen the mirror tube clamping knob @, pivot the mirror tube so that it is
perpendicular to the drawing sheet. Then tighten the mirror tube clamping
knob @.
#If the mirror pivoting angle is too large, drawing will be difficult be-
cause the pen motion on the drawing sheet will not coincide with
that in the field of view.
3Focusing the Specimen
Focus the specimen using the coarse or fine focus adjustment knob on
the microscope body.

4Removing the Light Shield Cap (Fig. 2)
The light shield cap should be removed and placed on the top of the
mirror tube during drawing.
#When microscopic observation is required while the drawing attach-
ment is mounted on the microscope, attach the light shield cap on
the drawing sheet side to shield the light.

5Focusing the Drawing Sheet
Turn the focusing handle to bring the drawing sheet into focus.
6Adjusting the Brightness Balance Between the
Drawing Image and Specimen Image
Look into the observation tube eyepieces, place the tip of a pen or similar
thin object on the drawing sheet and adjust the microscope illumination
so that both the pen tip and specimen are clearly visible.
#If the drawing sheet surface looks dark, illuminate it with a desk lamp
or place the sheet on a light box.
7Drawing
Look into the observation tube eyepieces and trace the specimen image
on the drawing sheet using a pencil or similar writing tool.

DRAWING MAGNIFICATION
Use the following procedure and formula to calculate the drawing magni-
fication.
1Measuring Drawing Size D(Figs. 3 & 4)
Place the scale line on the drawing sheet, look into the eyepiece and read
the size of the drawing field, D.
2Calculating Drawing Magnification ß
* The field number is indicated on the eyepiece.
(Example) With indication WHS10X22, “22” is the field number.
