1Overview
1.1 Description
The PCIe x4 Gen 2 expansion kit is used to extend the PCI Express bus from a host server to an external PCIe I/O board. The host adapter card
inserts into a PCIe slot of the server. It then cables to a downstream target adapter card. The target adapter card inserts in the OSS Gen 2, 2-slot
backplane. The I/O board then inserts in the other slot of the backplane.
The host adapter installs in the PCIe x4, x8, or x16 slot of the host motherboard. The target adapter card installs in the appropriate slot of the 2-
slot backplane. A third party I/O card installs in the second slot of the 2-slot backplane. The I/O card then appears to the host system as host of
that system.
Gen 2 products operate at 5Gb/s per lane, or twice the bandwidth of Gen 1 products. Therefore, PCIe x4 Gen 2 products operate at 20Gb/s
when inserted in a x4 or higher slot. Only use a PCIe Gen 1 or Gen 2 device with this kit. A PCIe Gen 3 card will not work properly.

1.2 Features
1.2.1 Backplane
The backplane has two slots
o1slot is Target slot (a.k.a “Upstream slot / port”). This is a designated slot for the target adapter card
o2nd slot is the expansion slot (a.k.a “Downstream" slot / port). Use this slot to plug in a specific PCIe card. The
downstream slot accommodates a single x2, x4, x8 and x16 PCIe card.
oThe slot is backward compatible and support Gen 1 and Gen2
Target slot is x16 Gen 3
Expansion slot is x16 Gen 3

1.2.2 Adapter Cards
The Host adapter card inserts into any PCI Express x4, x8, 16 slot on the host motherboard.
The Target adapter card operates ONLY in the OSS backplane target slot.
Both Host and Target adapter cards have PWR and CBL LED indicators.
Support half-height bracket.
The Host and Target cable adapter cards require no software / drivers

2Component Identification
2.1 Host cable adapter card
The PCIe x4 expansion kit contains two cable adapter boards, the host cable adapter and the target cable adapter. The host adapter inserts into
the host computer’s PCIe x4, x8 or x16 slot. The host cable adapter (Part # OSS-PCIe-HIB25-x4-H) allows communication between a processor
and an I/O point. The target adapter inserts into the designated target slot.
Cable LED indicators are the same for both Host and Target configurations.

3Installation Instructions
3.1 Installing the Adapter Kit
1. Insert the host cable adapter into an appropriate PCIe slot of the host computer. For example, a PCIe x4 host board can be inserted
into a PCIe x16, x8, or x4 slot. It will still operate at x4 speeds. Secure the cable adapter card
3.2 Using the 2slot- Backplane
1. Insert the target cable adapter card into the PCIe slot ( this is the designated slot), see photos below.
NOTE: Do not use the Endpoint slot (Expansion slot / Downstream slot) for the “Target Cable Adapter card”
2. Plug in the add-in card or PCIe card in the available IO slot (Endpoint slot: also known as expansion slot and / or downstream slot),
see photos below.
3. Connect +12v 4-PIN Aux power cable from your ATX power supply to either J3, J5 or both J3 and J5, see photos below.

4. If your ATX power supply does not have a separate +12V 4-pin connector, you can buy a P4-to-ATX Power Supply adapter, see
photo below. This cable is not sold by OSS. You can buy this from any online electronics stores. Use the description “P4-to-ATX
Power Supply adapter” when searching for the adapter cable on the web.
5. Connect the x4 PCIe cable to both cables adapter cards. Press the green TAB while slowly inserting the cable, then release it to lock
the cable.
6. Power up the power supply to the 2-slot backplane. The board LED will turn ON. The power supply and 2slot backplane will not
power up at this time.
7. Power up the Host computer. The power and cable LEDs on the cable adapter cards will be ON. This powers UP the backplane.
8. The I/O board will start automatically.
3.3 Using any Third-party I/O device
1. The add-in card or third-party I/O device must be installed in the endpoint slot (expansion slot / downstream port).
2. Connect the external power source (separate from the host system power supply) to the add-in card or PCIe card device if
necessary.
3.4 Removing the PCIe cable
1. To remove the cable, press down the green tab and slowly pull the cable out.
3.5 Force Power ON
1. Install shunt or jumper on J1 connector to force power on the backplane. This is not required for normal operation.

4Technical Information
The transmit and receive signals on the OSS-HIB-25x4 are driven and conditioned by Pericom redriver chips. Adjustments can be made to
equalization, de-emphasis and output swing. These controls are factory set by the use of zero Ohm resistors.
In the following tables, a 0 indicates that a zero Ohm resistor has been installed and a 1 indicates no resistor. In rare cases, mostly where non-
OSS equipment is used with the HIB-25x4, these adjustments may need to be changed. The following tables are made available for this
purpose. It is highly recommended to contact OSS customer support before making changes to these settings. Having the customer solder to
the board should void the warranty.

Host and Target card connectors (x4 Card Edge Connector)
The pins are numbered as shown with side A on the top of the centerline on the solder side of the board and side B on the bottom of
the centerline on the component side of the board.
The PCIe interface pins PETpx, PETnx, PERpx, and PERnx are named with the following convention: “PE” stands for PCIe high speed,
“T” for Transmitter, “R” for Receiver, “p” for positive (+), and “n” for negative (-).
Note that adjacent differential pairs are separated by two ground pins to manage the connector crosstalk.
