1 Product description
1.1 Foreword
With this wheelchair you have chosen a quality product for versatile use during everyday life, both indoors and out
doors.
Before you use the wheelchair, please be sure to read these instructions for use. Please pay particular attention to the
chapters "Safety" and "Operation".
Please observe the following:
• Should you have any question or if a problem cannot be solved even using the instructions for use, please contact
the specialist who delivered the wheelchair to you, or the Otto Bock after-sales service (addresses, see inside rear
cover or rear cover).
• Childrens and youths must be instructed in the use of the product by qualified personnel or by an accompanying
person using these instructions for use.
• The wheelchair has been designed to meet the needs of the user. Subsequent modifications may only be carried
out by qualified personnel. We recommend regular inspection of the wheelchair adjustments in order to ensure
optimum long-term use. Particularly with growing children and youths, an adjustment every six months is recom
mended.
• The wheelchair may only be combined with the options described here. Otto Bock assumes no liability for combina
tions with medical products and/or accessories from other manufacturers outside the modular system.
• Please observe also the information in the chapter "Liability".
• Your wheelchair model may differ from the variants illustrated here. In particular not all the options described in
these instructions for use are installed on your wheelchair.
• We reserve the right to make technical modifications to the design described in these instructions for use.
1.2 Function
The wheelchair is designed solely for individual use by persons who are unable to walk or who have a walking impedi
ment, and can be operated either by the patient or by another person.
The wheelchair can be used on solid ground both indoors and outdoors.

The Avantgarde CLT is the weight-optimised sports version for particularly active users. In the version CLT "welded",
subsequent modification of the wheel position and backrest height was sacrificed in favour of saving additional weight.

Read the instructions for use before using the product. Familiarise yourself with the handling, functions and use of the
product before using it. You may compromise your safety if you fail to observe these instructions.
2.3 Safety instructions for use
Hazards during preparation for use
WARNING
Independent modification of the settings
Risk of falling, tipping or incorrect posture of the user
►Do not change settings made by the qualified personnel.
►In the event of problems with the settings (unsatisfactory seat position, wobbling of the front wheels, etc.), please
contact the personnel who adjusted your wheelchair.
WARNING
Settings outside the safety limits
Risk of falling, tipping of the user
►In certain versions and with certain settings, the wheelchair tends to tip backwards due to its design. The feature
is intentional in order to enable users with the corresponding physical preconditions to manoeuvre quickly and
nimbly.
►Users with the necessary physical/psychological preconditions can be supplied with such versions/settings. If the
physical/psychological preconditions change, the wheelchair may no longer be used with these settings. In this
case inform your dealer immediately.

Incorrect handling of packaging materials

►Familiarise yourself with the wheelchair by practicing on level, easy terrain first.
►Learn with the support of an assistant how the wheelchair reacts to changes in centre of gravity, e.g. downward
or upward slopes, inclines or when overcoming obstacles.
►Always activate the anti-tipper.

►Do not lean too far out of the wheelchair when trying to pick up objects.
►Lean well forward with your upper body when climbing gradients, overcoming obstacles on gradients or on
ramps. If users cannot lean their upper body forward, accompanying persons must support the wheelchair from
behind.

Risk of tipping or rolling over, or of collisions with others
►Travel slowly over obstacles (e.g. steps, curbstones) and on upward or downward slopes and inclines.
►Do not "jump" down from curbstones or higher surfaces.

Wrong use of the wheel lock
Risk of falling with abrupt braking or rolling away of the wheelchair
►Do not use the wheel lock when travelling.
►Apply the wheel lock to prevent the wheelchair from moving on uneven ground or during transfers (e.g. into a car).

Travel in public areas during darkness
Risk of collisions with others
►Wear light-coloured clothing or clothing with reflectors.
►Install active lighting on your wheelchair.
►Ensure that the reflectors on the wheelchair are clearly visible.
Hazards when overcoming obstacles

►Always have accompanying persons help you overcome steps and other obstacles.
►Use facilities available (e.g. access ramps or lifts).
►If such facilities are not available, have 2 assistants carry you over the obstacle.

Wrong lifting by accompanying persons

►Accompanying persons may only lift the wheelchair at permanently installed parts.
►Accompanying persons must ensure that with height-adjustable push handles, the clamping levers are securely
locked.

Wrongly adjusted anti-tipper
Risk of falling, tipping of the user
►If only 1 accompanying person helps in overcoming steps, the accompanying person must first adjust the anti-tip
per so that it cannot collide with the steps during transport.
►The accompanying person must adjust the anti-tipper again correctly after overcoming the steps.

►Ensure that an installed anti-tipper is activated before travelling over obstacles and on inclines.
►The anti-tipper must engage audibly before use. Proper engagement must be checked by the user or an accom
panying person.
►The use of an anti-tipper is urgently recommended for persons with legs amputated above the knee.
Hazards from poor tyres
CAUTION
Poor tyres
Risk of accidents/falling due to poor traction, reduced braking effect or poor manoeuvrability
►Pay attention to adequate type pressure. The correct air pressure is printed on the sidewall of the tyre. For the
rear wheels, the minimum air pressure is 7bar.
►Ensure that both tyres are inflated to the same pressure.
►Ensure that the tyres have sufficient tread depth.
►Pay attention to correct adjustment of the knee lever brake (approx. 5 mm clearance to the tyres, technical modi
fications reserved) and adequate inflation pressure.
Hazard for broken skin
CAUTION
Risk of prolonged contact with broken skin
Risk of medically indicated complications, e.g. redness and pressure marks
►Check before using the wheelchair that the skin is not broken in areas subject to prolonged pressure (e.g. but
tocks, back and rear side of the thighs).
►Do not use the wheelchair if the skin is broken. No liability is assumed for health impairments caused by the use of
the wheelchair with broken skin.
Hazards due to fire, heat and cold
CAUTION
Ignition of seat cushion and backrest cover
Risk of burns
►The seat cushion and backrest cover of the wheelchair are not highly flammable, but there is a possibility they
may catch fire. Utmost caution is therefore required near any open fires.
►Keep away from any sources of fire, in particular burning cigarettes.
CAUTION
Extreme temperatures
Risk of hypothermia or burns on wheelchair parts
►Do not expose the product to any extreme temperatures (e.g. direct sunlight, sauna, extreme cold).

3 Delivery
3.1 Scope of supply
The wheelchair is usually delivered fully assembled, folded, and with the rear wheels removed.
The scope of supply includes:
• Preassembled wheelchair
• 2 rear wheels
• Footrests
• Instructions for use
3.2 Standard equipment
The standard equipment includes:
• Aluminium frame with double cross-brace
• Avantgarde CS/CLT: Closed front frame with integrated footrest holder
• Avantgarde CV: Vertical front frame with pivoting footrest holder
• Footrests/side panels of aluminium
• Calf band
• Seat cover, nylon, retensionable
• Rear wheels with quick-release axle
• Rear wheel adapter with 84 positions (not on Avantgarde CLT welded)
• Knee lever brakes
• Front wheel in front wheel fork with screw axle, adjustable yoke
• Push handles
The seat cushion does not form part of the standard equipment.
3.3 Options
The standard equipment may have been adapted to the personal needs of the user with a variety of options. For use of
these options see Page 16.
3.4 Storage
The wheelchair must be stored dry. The ambient temperature must be maintained between -10°C and +40°C.
Wheelchairs with PU tyres should not be stored for prolonged periods with the knee-lever brake applied as the tyres
could be deformed.
INFORMATION
Tyres contain chemical substances that can react with other chemical substances (such as cleaning agents, acids,
etc.).
4 Preparation for use
4.1 Assembly

►Before using the wheelchair for the first time, check the pre-settings with the support of the qualified personnel.
►After every assembly, check the proper mounting of the rear wheels. The wheel axles must be securely locked in
the fitting.
►Pay attention in particular to the stability against tipping, free running of the rear wheel and correct function of the
brakes.
►Check the tyre inflation pressure. The correct air pressure is printed on the sidewall of the tyre. For rear wheels,
the minimum air pressure is 7bar. Ensure that both tyres are inflated to the same pressure.
INFORMATION

For details of dismantling/transport, see chapter "Dismantling / transport".
A few simple steps are sufficient to prepare the wheelchair for use:
1) Push the rear wheels into the fitting (see Fig. 4). It must not be possible to pull off the wheel shafts when the button
is released.
2) Loosen the safety strap (see Fig. 5).
3) Unfold the wheelchair (see Fig. 6).
INFORMATION When standing next to the wheelchair, tip it slightly toward you and press on the edge of the seat
cover closest to you.
4) Fold the footrest(s) down. When using a single-panel footrest, be sure the support of the footplate is engaged in
the mounting (see Fig. 7).
5) Fit the seat cushion (see Fig. 8). The seat cushion can be secured against sliding by pressing it onto the Velcro
fastener.

5 Operation
5.1 Techniques for Using a Wheelchair
INFORMATION
Be sure to read also the safety instructions in chapter 2.3 before using the wheelchair for the first time.
Information and practical tips on fundamental techniques for using the wheelchair can be found in the brochure "Tech
niques for Using a Wheelchair" supplied with the product.
Should the brochure not be included with the product, it can be ordered under article number 646D60. Further inform
ation on obtaining the brochure can be provided by the qualified personnel supplying the wheelchair or by the Otto
Bock after-sales service (addresses: see rear inside cover or rear cover).
5.2 Getting into the wheelchair/transfers
CAUTION
Getting into the wheelchair with the footrests folded down

►Fold the footrests/footplate up before getting into the wheelchair.
►Always get into the wheelchair from the side, if possible.
Getting into the wheelchair is described here in combination with a transfer from one wheelchair to another.
The wheelchair is designed for persons who normally move around in the wheelchair independently. The independent
getting in/transfer is described accordingly. If an assistant is required, the steps described here should be performed
analogously with the support:

1) Manoeuvre the wheelchairs so that they are positioned at an angle of approx. 45° degrees to each other
(see Fig. 9). Ensure that the brakes do not become entangled.
2) Lock the brakes of the wheelchair currently in use.
3) On the other wheelchair, lock the brakes and fold up the footrest (footplate) (see Fig. 10).
4) Move your feet from the footplate onto the floor and move forward in the wheelchair (see Fig. 11).
5) Make the transfer to the 2nd wheelchair (see Fig. 12). The method illustrated is one possible way to support your
self.
INFORMATION Find the most suitable method for yourself by practicing with the help of an assistant.
6) Finally fold the footplate down, place your feet on the footrest and release the wheel locks.
→The wheelchair can now be used.

5.3 Information on use
5.3.1 Footrests
CAUTION
Getting into the wheelchair with the footrests folded down

►Fold the footrests/footplate up before getting into the wheelchair.
►Always get into the wheelchair from the side, if possible.
5.3.1.1 Folding up the two-piece footrest for getting into the wheelchair
►Grip the footrests and fold them up to the side.
5.3.1.2 Folding up the one-piece footrest for getting into the wheelchair
►Unhook the footrest from the retainer on one side and fold up to the side (see Fig. 13).

5.3.1.3 Folding away/removing the footrest (model CV only)
1) Open the calf band.
2) Push the swivel handle of the footrest to the rear (see Fig. 14).
3) Swing the footrest outwards and to the side by 90° (see Fig. 15).
4) If necessary, pull off the footrest from above (see Fig. 16).

1) Press the red knob of the footrest (see Fig. 20).
2) Adjust the angle and allow the footrest to engage.
5.3.1.6 Adjusting the angle of the amputation leg rest
1) Release the clamping lever (see Fig. 21).
2) Turn the leg rest to the desired angle.
3) Lock the clamping lever.

5.3.2 Seat cushion / backrest cover

5.3.3 Side panels

►Pay attention not to pinch parts of your body between the side or frame parts.
5.3.3.1 Adjusting the armrest height on desk side panels
The armrest can be adjusted in height by moving it to various positions without the use of tools.
1) Pull the release lever in the round opening of the side panel downwards (see Fig. 23).
2) Push the armrest to the desired position.
3) Release the release lever. The armrest engages automatically.

5.3.3.2 Removing/fitting the desk side panels
CAUTION
Incorrect use of the side panel

►Fold the side panel down so that it engages audibly in the side panel mounting.
Folding back/removing
To make getting into the wheelchair easier, the side panels can be fold up and removed:
1) Press the release lever of the desk side panel (see Fig. 24).
2) Fold up the desk side panel by approx. 90°.
3) Turn the desk side panel towards the backrest and pull out of the side panel mounting (see Fig. 25).
