Preface
Purpose of This Manual
This Remove & Replace guide provides instructions and information required for the
removal and replacement of the Overland Storage Horizontal Robotics Assembly (HRA) in a
NEO 8000™ Library system comprised of two library units.
Manual Organization
The following information is contained in this manual.
Chapter 1, “Introduction.”
Provides an overview of the change-out process, along with a brief description of any
additional recommendations.
Chapter 2, “Prepare the Libraries.”
Describes how to open up the libraries to facilitate the removal and replacement of the HRA.

Chapter 1: Introduction
A Horizontal Robotics Assembly (HRA) is installed inside two connected NEO 8000 libraries
to enable the robotics in each of the individual libraries to exchange cartridges by means of
a pass-through system.
IMPORTANT: Overland Storage recommends that the HRA be replaced by an Overland Storage
authorized service provider. Improper removal and replacement may result in damage to this
part or library components which would void all existing warranties.
Replacement Process Overview
Described below are the major steps required to remove and replace the HRA in your NEO
8000 system. Unless otherwise noted, all hardware is included in the HRA kit.
NOTE: Always retain any screws removed during this procedure. They will be reused to reinstall
the appropriate components.
Step 1: Prepare the Libraries
•Only if necessary, move the library system to provide working room.
•Remove both side panels for easy access to change out the HRA.
•Optionally, remove access panels at the rear of the libraries.
Step 2: Replace the HRA
•Disconnect all the library wiring from the HRA.
•Remove the old HRA from the libraries.
•Install the new HRA into the libraries.
•Replace all components removed to allow access to the HRA.
Step 3: Verify the HRA Operation
•Power On both units
•Test the HRA operational ability.
Required Tools
These tools are required for the proper removal and replacement of the HRA:
•#1 and #2 Phillips Screwdrivers
•#2 Stubby Phillips Screwdriver
These tools are required only if you need to level the libraries:
•6" or 10" Spirit Level (15cm or 25cm)
•36" Level with Straight Edge (90cm)
•10" Adjustable Wrench (260mm)

Figure 1-1 shows the layout of the HRA major components.

Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage static-sensitive devices. Proper packaging and
grounding techniques are necessary precautions to prevent damage. To prevent electrostatic
damage, observe the following precautions.
•Transport products in static-safe containers such as conductive tubes, bags, or boxes.
•Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-free
stations.
•Cover the library with approved static-dissipating material.
•Use a wrist strap connected to the work surface and properly-grounded tools and
equipment.
•Keep the work area free of non-conductive materials such as foam packing materials.
•Make sure you are always properly grounded when touching a static-sensitive
component or assembly.
•Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.

Chapter 2: Prepare the Libraries
To simplify the replacement of the HRA, you need to remove some library panels to allow
access to key areas inside the libraries.
Move the Library System
There must be at least 3.5 feet (1.1m) of clear space beside the library to allow enough room
to remove the HRA from the connected NEO 8000 libraries. If there is not enough room, it is
necessary for you to move the library system.

Refer to Appendix A, “Moving the Libraries,” for information about moving and leveling the
libraries.
Power Down the Libraries
WARNING: Working with a powered NEO 8000 library may cause physical harm and
severe damage to unit’s circuitry. Always power down a library before removing any
panels.
1. Power down both units at the front panel.
2. Set each of the library circuit breakers to the OFF (“O”) position.
3. Remove and retain the power cords.
Remove the Side Panels
Remove the outside side panels from both libraries.
1. At the Master unit, remove the screws that secure the left panel and carefully
remove the panel.
2. At the Slave unit, remove the screws that secure the right panel and carefully
remove the panel (see Figure 2-2).

Remove Components for Rear Access
If you cannot reach parts of the HRA from the sides or are unable to remove one of the side
panels, removal of various access plates from both libraries can allow easier access or assist
in leveling the system after it has been moved.

At the rear of the each unit, remove and retain the left-center and the right-center access
plates and hardware.

Chapter 3: Replace the HRA
You are now ready to replace the old HRA. The new HRA comes complete and ready to
install.
CAUTION: Follow ESD protocols when working with the printed circuit boards (PCB).
Remove the Old HRA
Follow these steps to remove the old HRA from the library system.
1. Disconnect the Master and Slave power and signal cables from the HRA PCB.
Label the wires (see Figure 3-1) to facilitate attaching them to the new unit.

2. Move the HRA shuttle to the middle of the assembly.
3. Remove and retain the four M4x10mm screws attaching the HRA to the mounting
brackets (see Figure 3-2).

4. Carefully lift the HRA up and off the Mounting Bracket alignment pins.
5. Remove the old HRA from the library system and set it on a secure surface.
Attach the New HRA
Attach the new HRA to the Mounting Bracket assemblies.
1. Feed the HRA through the libraries above the Mounting Bracket assemblies.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the sensors mounted on the brackets.

2. Guide the HRA onto the alignment pins on the Mounting Bracket assemblies.
3. Loosely secure the HRA to each Mounting Bracket assembly with a M4x10mm PH
screw.

4. Using the drive belt, operate the shuttle by hand the full length of the HRA to ensure
that there are no obstructions that interfere with its travel.
5. With the shuttle positioned in the middle of the HRA, tighten the installed screws
and install the remaining two screws into the brackets.
6. Reconnect the library Signal and Power cables to the HRA PCB.
Check the Position of the Libraries
CAUTION: In order for the HRA to function correctly, the library system must be level.
Although the replacement of the HRA should not impact the level of the library system, it is
important to verify the library has not shifted over time.
1. Place a 6" to 10" (15–25cm) level, front to rear, on the middle-right drawer slide
housing on the Slave unit (see Figure 3-5) and note if the unit is level front-to-back.

2. Place a 36" (90cm) level across one of the mounting brackets and note if the unit is
level side-to-side.
If the library was moved or is no longer level, refer to Appendix A, “Moving the Libraries,” to
reposition and level the system.

Reattach Side Panels and Access Plates
Once the units are confirmed level, reattach the side panels of the libraries using the
retained screws. If any access plates were removed from the back panels, reattach them at
this time.

Chapter 4: Verify the HRA Operation
Once the new HRA is in place, you need to check that everything functions correctly.
CAUTION: For the HRA to function correctly, the Master library must have all six (6) drawers
enabled before enabling any drawers in the Slave unit.
Power on the Library System
1. Reattach all the power cords.
2. Set each of the library circuit breakers to the ON (“|”) position.
3. Power on both units at the front panel.
CAUTION: Always start the Slave unit before (or simultaneously with) the Master unit so the
Master unit recognizes and connects with the Slave unit during POST.
Test the Libraries
Use the Cartridge Cycle Diagnostic from the GUI touch screen to validate the functionality
of the new HRA.
NOTE: This test randomly moves and redistributes the tape cartridges in the two libraries
requiring that they be re-inventoried before putting them back in service. In lieu of this
automated test, you can manually move selected tapes between the Master and Slave
libraries to validate the functionality of the new HRA.
1. Verify that 5 or more cartridges are available from an enabled drawer or Mail Slot of
the Master library.
2. Select Menu > Diagnostics > Cartridge Cycle > Start (see Figure 4-1).

NOTE: The GUI refers to the HRA as “Pass-Thru” on the GUI screen.
3. Allow the test to run for 30 minutes or 20-25 HRA (Pass-Thru) iterations.

Technical Support” in the Preface for contact information.

Appendix A: Moving the Libraries
If the library system must be moved, follow the following procedures to move it out, move it
back, and then level the units.
Move the Library System Out for Access
The libraries must be powered so that the drawers and mail slot can be removed before
attempting to move the library system.
WARNING: Use care when removing the media drawers. Fully-loaded drawers weigh
approximately 58 pounds (26.4 kg). Exercise care when removing the drawers from the
libraries.
1. With the power On, release and remove all the media drawers from both the Master
and Slave units.
2. Release and remove the Mail Slots from both units.
WARNING: Working with a powered NEO 8000 library may cause physical harm and
severe damage to unit’s circuitry. Always power down a library before removing any
panels.
3. Power down both units.
a. Turn off the Slave unit.
b. Turn off the Master unit.
c. Set each of the library circuit breakers to the OFF (“O”) position.
d. Remove and retain the power cords.
4. Verify that the library leveler reference marks are still visible on the floor (see
Figure A-1). If necessary, remark the location and position of the levelers.

5. Using a wrench, turn each leveler 3-4 turns counterclockwise to raise it off the floor.
6. Using at least 2 people, roll the library system to an open location.
Continue with the standard removal and replacement of the HRA.
Move the Library System Back in Place
Once the new HRA is in place, you can move the library system back to its original position.
1. Using at least 2 people, roll the library system back in place aligning the levelers with
the appropriate reference marks on the floor.
2. Using a wrench, turn each leveler 3-4 turns clockwise until it makes firm contact with
the floor and lines up with the reference marks.
3. Place a 6" to 10" (15–25cm) level, front to rear, on the middle-right drawer slide
housing on the Slave unit (see Figure A-2).

4. Note the position of the bubble. If necessary, raise all four of the front feet or all four of
the rear feet the same amount to achieve a level front-to-rear reading.
5. Place a 36" (90cm) level across one of the mounting brackets.
NOTE: The access plates must be removed to allow viewing of the level.
6. Note the position of the bubble. Using a wrench, raise both of the left feet or both of the
right feet the same amount to achieve a level side-to-side reading.
7. Once the unit is level side-to-side, use a wrench to snug down the center four levelers.
8. Recheck the level from front-to-rear and from side-to-side. Adjust as needed to level
the library.
