Introduction
IMPORTANT: Overland Storage requires that all NEO 8000
parts be removed and replaced by an Overland Storage
authorized service provider. Improper installation may
result in damage which voids existing warranties.
The NEO 8000 features LiveSwapTM that, because of the
Hot Swap assembly, permits tape drives to be added,
removed, or replaced without powering down the library.
This document describes how to remove and replace a Hot
Swap assembly in an Overland Storage NEO 8000
Library.
Unpacking the Spare
Carefully unpack the spare part and verify that you have
all the parts:
•Hot Swap assembly in an anti-static bag
•Two M3x6mm screws
•These remove & replace instructions
WARNING: The GUI touch screen does not
completely shut off NEO 8000 system power. To
reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to
equipment, disconnect the power by unplugging
the power cords.
Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry
or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent electrostatic
damage, observe the following precautions:
•Transport and store items in static-safe containers.
•Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers
until they arrive at static-free stations.
•Use a wrist strap and properly-grounded tools.
•Make sure you are always properly grounded when
touching a static-sensitive component or assembly.
•Keep the work area free of non-conductive materials.
•Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
Prepare the Library
1. At the front panel, power down the library.
2. Set the library circuit breakers to OFF (“O”), and
remove and retain the power cords.
3. Locate the Hot Swap assembly being replaced
(Figure 1).
4. Remove any network cables and terminators.
5. Remove the drives or cover plates from the old
assembly’s drive bay.
6. Remove and retain the M3x8mm screw and drive
divider.

Remove Old Assembly
1. Remove the two M2x6mm screws (Figure 2) holding
the assembly to the frame.

2. Gently slide the assembly out about 2 in. (5cm), and
pivot it up to access the cables underneath.
NOTE: If necessary, remove the power and ribbon cables
from the D-clamps on the backplane to make it easier to
remove them from the Hot Swap assembly.
3. Squeezing the sides of the plug to release it, remove the
ribbon cable from the socket.
CAUTION: Failure to release the plug before removing it
damages to the ribbon cable socket.
4. Releasing the clip holding the plug to the socket,
remove the power cable.
5. Remove the old assembly and set it aside.
Install New Assembly
1. Position the new assembly at the drive bay, tilted up
to access the plugs underneath.
2. Run the power cable through the Hot Swap assembly
(Figure 3), and push the plug into the socket until it
clicks in place.
3. Push the ribbon cable plug into the socket until it is
fully seated.

4. Slide the assembly back into drive bay until the
alignment pins are in their respective holes.
CAUTION: Verify that the cables do not rub against the edge
of the Hot Swap assembly bottom frame. Verify that the
power and ribbon cables are secured in the D-clamps.
5. Using the new M3x6mm screws, attach the new
assembly to the frame.
Restart the Library
1. Use the retained M3x8mm screw to reinstall the drive
divider.
2. Reinstall the drives or cover plates.
3. Reattach any network cables and terminators.
4. Reattach the power cords and set the library circuit
breakers to ON (“|”).
The library should power up normally and see all drives.
