Introduction
IMPORTANT: Overland Storage requires that all NEO 8000
parts be removed and replaced by an Overland Storage
authorized service provider. Improper installation may
result in damage which voids existing warranties.
This document describes how to remove and replace a
Signal Cable for a Horizontal Robotics Assembly (HRA)
installed in a NEO 8000 system from Overland Storage.
Unpacking the Spare
Carefully unpack the spare part and verify that you have
all the parts:
•HRA Master and Slave Signal Cables
•Remove & Replace/Add-On Instructions
Tools Needed
•Phillips screwdriver
•Hex screwdriver
WARNING: The GUI touch screen does not
completely shut off NEO 8000 system power. To
reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to
equipment, disconnect the power by unplugging
the power cords.
Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry
or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent electrostatic
damage, observe the following precautions:
•Transport and store items in static-safe containers.
•Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers
until they arrive at static-free stations.
•Use a wrist strap and properly-grounded tools.
•Make sure you are always properly grounded when
touching a static-sensitive component or assembly.
•Keep the work area free of non-conductive materials.
•Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
Before beginning, be sure there is enough space on the
around the library system to allow access to the units.
NOTE: With the HRA installed, the right side of the Master unit
is connected to the left side of the Slave unit. While not
recommended, if it becomes necessary to detach the units, refer
to the NEO 8000 Scalability Upgrade Installation Guide (P/N
104370-1nn).
1. Power down the library, turning off the circuit
breakers and removing the power cords.
2. At the Slave unit, remove and retain the screws (six
hex or eight phillips) that secure the right side panel
and carefully remove the panel (Figure 1).

3. At the Master unit, remove and retain the screws (six
hex or eight phillips) that secure the left side panel
and carefully remove the panel.
4. If additional access is needed, remove and retain these
access plates (Figure 2) from the rear of both
libraries:
• Master left-center access plate
• Master right-center access plate
•Slaveleft-centeraccess plate
• Slave right-center access plate

To provide access to the signal cables running along the
back sheet metal under the HRA, it is necessary to loosen
the HRA (Figure 3).
IMPORTANT: Follow electrostatic discharge (ESD)
protocols when removing and attaching the HRA
Controller card signal cables.

1. Remove and retain the four M4x10mm PH screws
holding the HRA to the mounting brackets.
2. Carefully lift and move the HRA up and toward the
front of the libraries, resting it on the mounting
brackets in front of the alignment pins (Figure 4).

CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the sensors mounted
on the brackets between the alignment pins (Figure 5).

3. Locate the 48" long (122cm) Master Signal Cable
(P/N 969446-101) in the kit.
4. On the HRA Controller PWA, unplug the old Master
Signal Cable from the J4 connection (Figure 6).
5. Plug the new cable into the J4 socket.
6. Remove the old cable from the D-clamps along the
back sheet metal and run the loose end down to the
Master Primary Card Cage.
7. Insert the new cable into the D-clamps and run it
down to the Master Primary Card Cage.
8. Repeat Steps 4–7 for the 73" long (185cm) Slave
Signal Cable (P/N 969446-102), running it down to the
Slave Primary Card Cage.

Change out the HRA Master Signal Cable at the Master
Primary Card Cage assembly.
1. Remove and retain the screws holding the Primary
Card Cage assembly in the Master library (Figure 7):
•Three M3x10mm screws on the fan assembly (but
do not remove the fan assembly)
•Three M3x8mm screws on the card cage assembly

2. Pull the fan/card cage out far enough to access the
connectors located on the back of the cage.
3. Disconnect the old cable from J8 on the Card Cage
PWA (Figure 8) and remove it from the library.

4. Locate the new Master Signal Cable and plug it into
the J8 socket.
5. Pull any excess cable down and position it behind the
card cage.
6. Push the fan/card cage back in place and refasten it
with the retained screws.
CAUTION: Be sure to use the 10mm for the fan assembly.
Using the shorter 8mm card cage screws may strip the
threads and prevent proper assembly.
Change out the HRA Slave Signal Cable at the Slave
Primary Card Cage assembly.
1. Remove and retain the screws holding the Primary
Card Cage assembly in the Slave library (Figure 7):
•Three M3x10mm screws on the fan assembly (but
do not remove the fan assembly)
•Three M3x8mm screws on the card cage assembly

2. Pull the fan/card cage out far enough to access the
connectors located on the back of the cage.
3. Disconnect the old cable from J7 on the Card Cage
PWA (Figure 9) and remove it from the library.
4. Locate the new Slave Signal Cable and plug it into the
J7 socket.
5. Pull any excess cable down and position it behind the
card cage.
6. Push the fan/card cage back in place and refasten it
with the retained screws.
CAUTION: Be sure to use the 10mm for the fan assembly.
Using the shorter 8mm card cage screws may strip the

NOTE: If you detached the libraries, refer to the NEO 8000
Scalability Upgrade Installation Guide (P/N 104370-1nn) for
information about reconnecting and leveling the units.
1. Guide the HRA onto the alignment pins on the two
Mounting Bracket assemblies.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the sensors mounted
on the brackets between the alignment pins (Figure 5).
2. Loosely secure the HRA with one M4x10mm PH screw
to each Mounting Bracket assembly.
3. Using the drive belt, operate the shuttle by hand
the full length of the HRA to ensure that there are no
obstructions that interfere with its travel.
4. With the shuttle positioned in the middle of the HRA,
tighten the two installed screws and screw in the
remaining two retained screws (Figure 3).
5. Reattach the power cords and turn on both circuit
breakers to power up the library.
6. After POST completes, run Menu > Diagnostics >
Cartridge Cycle to verify the operation of the library.
NOTE: This test will randomly move cartridges in the library
and may require the host software to reinventory it.
7. Using the retained screws (six hex or eight Phillips),
secure the right side panel to the Slave library.
8. Using the retained screws (six hex or eight Phillips),
secure the left side panel to the Master library.
9. If any rear access panels were removed, replace them
using the retained screws.
