Caution for AC Mains Lead

This appliance is supplied with a moulded three pin mains
plug for your safety and convenience.
A 13 amp fuse is fitted in this plug.
Should the fuse need to be replaced please ensure that
the replacement fuse has a rating of 13 amps and that it
is approved by ASTA or BSI to BS1362.
Check for the ASTA mark ¨or the BSI mark ©on the
body of the fuse.
If the plug contains a removable fuse cover you must
ensure that it is refitted when the fuse is replaced.
If you lose the fuse cover the plug must not be used until
a replacement cover is obtained.
A replacement fuse cover can be purchased from your
local Panasonic Dealer.

As the colours of the wire in the mains lead of this
appliance may not correspond with the coloured markings
identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows.
• The wire which is coloured green-and-yellow must be
connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked
with the letter Eor by the earth symbol ªor coloured
green or green-and-yellow.
• The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to
the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter N
or coloured black.
• The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to
the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter L
or coloured red.

Overview
This camera control unit (CCU) is designed to be used with
the AK-HC3500 multi-format camera (Sold separately).
It is used by connecting it to a multi-format camera
(AK-HC3500) by means of an optical fibre multi cable.
When the unit’s power is turned on, power is supplied to the
camera. (This setting can be changed.)
Using the unit, it is possible to input and output the video
signals of various formats.
The unit supports HD/SD-SDI outputs, SD analogue
composite outputs, HD/SD-SDI return inputs and prompter
inputs.
Intercom calls with the camera and microphone audio output
are provided.
The unit also comes with tally and other system interface
inputs.
A remote operation panel
(ROP: AK-HRP931 or AK-HRP935,
sold separately)
or master setup unit (MSU: AK-MSU935,
sold separately) can be connected using a multi-cable, and
the adjustments and settings of the camera and the unit can
be controlled using a remote controller.

Features
HD and SD format simultaneous operation enabled
pAs a standard feature, the unit incorporates not only HD
video signal outputs but SD video signal outputs (SDI and
analogue composite).
Width equivalent to a half-rack unit
pIf the shelf and other parts are installed separately when
the unit is to be housed in a rack, two units whose width
would be equivalent to 3U rack units can be installed side
by side so that the rack space can be utilized fully.
In addition, the units can easily be removed from the rack
and deployed elsewhere.
Bar ID display
pCharacters can be displayed on the colour bar signals so
as to identify the output source of the images, and then
output.
Prompter
pTwo prompter inputs are provided as a standard feature.
(One input when dual sync is used)
Utility power supply
pThe utility power supply enables high levels of power to be
supplied with the use of an optical fibre multi cable.
A maximum of 100 VA of power can be obtained from
the AC outlet of the buildup unit. (The amount of power
supplied depends on the length of the connected cable.)
Data trunk function
pTwo RS-422 and two RS-232C circuits are provided as a
standard feature.
They obviate the need for the cables used with virtual
control, pan-tilt head and lens control, etc.
DC power drive
pThe unit can also be driven using a DC power supply
(DC 12 V).
(When the camera is driven by a DC power supply)

Precautions for use
pHandle carefully.
Do not drop the product, or subject it to strong shock or
vibration.
This is important to prevent trouble.
pAvoid using the unit outdoors.
pUse the product in an ambient temperature of 0 °C to
+40 °C.
Avoid using the product at a cold place below 0 °C or at
a hot place above +40 °C because extremely low or high
temperature will adversely affect the parts inside.
pPower off before connecting or disconnecting cables.
Before plugging or unplugging the cables, be sure to
switch power off.
pAvoid humidity and dust.
Avoid using the product at a humid, dusty place because
much humidity and dust will cause damage to the parts
inside.
pMaintenance
Wipe the product using a dry cloth.
To remove stubborn dirt, dip a cloth into a diluted solution
of kitchen detergent (neutral detergent), wring it out well,
and wipe the product gently.
Avoid using benzine, paint thinners and other volatile
fluids.
Caution
pConcerning the optical fibre connector
The transmission and reception condition of the optical
signals will deteriorate when the optical fibre connector
has become dirty so be sure to clean the connector.
pConcerning the consumable parts
Cooling fan:
This is a consumable part.
As a general rule, replace it every 5 years or so (when
the unit has been operated for 15 hours a day).
Power supply unit:
This is a consumable part.
As a general rule, replace it every 5 years or so (when
the unit has been operated for 15 hours a day).
The period when the consumable parts need to be
replaced will differ depending on the operating conditions.
When the time comes to replace one of these parts,
be absolutely sure to ask your dealer to do the job.
pDisposal of the unit
When the unit has reached the end of its service life and
is to be disposed of, ask a qualified contractor to dispose
of the unit properly in order to protect the environment.
pBatteries shall not be exposed to excessive heat
such as sunshine, fire or the like.

Inside the front panel
Power switch [POWER]
This is the unit’s power switch.
Move it to the ON position when turning on the power.
It functions as a circuit breaker to protect the unit from
overcurrents.
When this function is tripped, the switch is set to the OFF
position.
Power indicator [POWER ON]
This lights when the power switch is set to ON and
power is supplied to the unit.
Camera cable open alarm indicator
[ALARM OPEN]
This lights when the unit and camera are not connected
by the optical fibre multi cable.
Camera cable short-circuit alarm indicator
[ALARM SHORT]
This lights when the cable connecting the unit and
camera has been short-circuited.
Fan alarm indicator [ALARM FAN]
This lights when the unit’s cooling fan stops running.
Tally indicator/CALL switch [TALLY/CALL]
This functions both as the CALL switch, which is pressed
when calling the camera side, and the tally indicator.
The indicator remains lit when tally signals (R) are input.
While the CALL switch is pressed on the camera, ROP,
MSU or CCU, it lights up when no tally signals are input,
and it goes off when tally signals are input.

Intercom connection selector switch
[SYS, PRIV]
This is used to select the party to be called using the
intercom.
SYS: At this position, the intercom at the system side
and camera side are called.
PRIV: Set to this position for making private calls
between the unit and camera side.
Intercom mic selector switch
[MIC ON, OFF, PTT]
ON: The intercom microphone is turned on.
OFF: The intercom microphone is turned off.
PTT: The intercom microphone is turned on only while
the switch is held down.
PGM mix selector switch
[PGM PGM1, OFF, PGM2]
This is used to select the PGM sound to be mixed with
the intercom sound.
PGM1: The sound of PGM1 is mixed with the intercom
sound.
OFF: The volume of the PGM sound to be mixed with
the intercom sound is set to OFF.
PGM2: The sound of PGM2 is mixed with the intercom
sound.
Intercom volume control [LEVEL INCOM]
This is used to adjust the volume level of the sound heard
through the intercom.
PGM volume control [LEVEL PGM]
This is used to adjust the volume level of the PGM sound
to be mixed with the intercom sound.
Intercom jack [INCOM]
When this is connected to intercom line 1, calls can be
made with intercom line 1 of the camera.
Calls can even be made when the camera’s power is
OFF.
Menu switch [MENU ON, OFF]
ON: The menu screen is displayed.
OFF: The menu screen is cleared.
Jog dial [SEL/SET]
This is used for the menu screen operations.
When it is turned clockwise, the cursor moves downward;
conversely, it is turned counterclockwise, the cursor
moves upward.
Press the jog dial to select the menu items.
Fuse holder [FUSE CAMERA]
This holds the fuse for the power that is supplied to the
camera.
Ask your dealer to replace the fuse when it has blown.

HD/SD digital video output connectors
[HD/SD SDI OUT 1, 2, 3, 4/PM]
These are the connectors (BNC) from which are output
the SDI signals in the HDTV and SDTV formats.
The HD/SD output mode can be selected using a menu
item setting.
Whether the HD SDI signals output from connector
[4/PM] are to be used for the main line or for the picture
monitor can be selected either using a menu item setting
or by exercising control using the remote controller.
(For details, refer to the “Setting 1” on page 28.)
HD/SD digital return video input connectors
[HD/SD SDI IN RET1, RET2, RET3, RET4]
These are the connectors (BNC) to which are input the
SDI signals used for the return images in the HDTV and
SDTV formats.
The HD/SD input mode can be selected using a menu
item setting.
(For details, refer to the “Setting 1” on page 27.)
SD analogue composite video output
connectors [ANA COMPOSITE OUT 1, 2/PM]
These are the connectors (BNC) from which are output
the analogue composite signals in the SDTV format.
Whether the signals output from connector [2/PM] are to
be used for the main line or for the picture monitor can be
selected either using a menu item setting.
(For details, refer to the “Setting 1” on page 28.)
SD analogue waveform monitor video output
connector [WFM OUT]
This is the connector (BNC) from which are output
the analogue composite signals for the SDTV format
waveform monitor.
Prompter input 1 connector [PROMPT IN1]
This is the connector (BNC) from which are output
the analogue composite signals for the SDTV format
prompter.

Reference input 1/loop-through output
connectors [REF1]
These are the reference signal input connectors (BNC).
Black burst (BB) signals and tri-level sync signals can
be input, and the type of signals input is recognized
automatically.
While the dual sync mode is established, input the
BB signals.
When the loop-through output is not going to be used,
terminate the connector using the supplied terminating
resisitance (75 j).
Prompter input 2/reference input 2 connector
[PROMPT IN2, REF2]
This is the connector (BNC) from which are output
the analogue composite signals for the SDTV format
prompter.
The input of the reference signal to this connector is not
supported at the present time.
Analogue sync output connector [SYNC OUT]
This is the camera’s HDTV/SDTV analogue sync signal
output connector (BNC).
Switching between the HD and SD formats is possible
using a menu item setting.
(For details, refer to the “Setting 1” on page 28.)
With the HD format, the signals are output at a ±0.3 V [p-p]
(75 jtermination) level; with the SD format, they are
output at a 1 V [p-p] (75 jtermination) level.
Mic 1, 2 output connectors [MIC1, 2]
These are the camera’s mic 1 and 2 analogue signal
output connectors.
The mic level is 0 dBm/600 j.
Optical fibre connector [CAMERA]
The optical fibre camera cable is connected here.
ROP connector [ROP]
The remote operation panel (ROP, sold separately) is
connected here.
MSU connector [MSU]
The master setup unit (MSU, sold separately) is
connected here.
!Intercom/tally connector [COMMUNICATION]
This is used to connect the intercom signals and tally
signals to the external system.
"Waveform monitor control/AUX connector
[WFM CONT/AUX]
This is used to control the waveform monitor and external
system (down-conversion system, alarm output, tally
output).
#Data trunk connector [TRUNK]
This enables two sets of the camera’s trunk data (RS-422
or RS-232C) to be sent or received.

LAN connector for use with PC connections [PC]
This LAN connector (RJ45) is used to connect a personal
computer when the Web setting is to be established.
A 10Base-T or 100Base-TX crossover cable is used to
connect the personal computer.
%DC 12 V input connector [12V IN]
This is the DC power (DC 12 V) input connector.
Use a power supply whose output is 12 V (±10 %) and
3 A or more.
&Circuit breaker [BREAKER]
This circuit breaker protects the unit from DC power
supply overcurrents.
When its function has been tripped and its button has
popped out, first set the unit’s power switch to OFF.
After removing the factor that caused the circuit breaker
to be tripped, push the button back in, and then set the
unit’s power switch to ON.
AC power socket [ IN]
The AC power is supplied to the unit through this socket.
Connect the power cable provided, and use a 3-pin outlet
to ground the unit properly.
Input voltage: AC 220 V to 240 V, 50/60 Hz
(Grounding terminal [SIGNAL GND]
Connect this to the system ground.
)Cooling fan
This is used to cool the unit.

Shown below are examples of a standard system consisting of the unit (AK-HCU3550), multi-format camera (AK-HC3500) and a
peripheral device.
Included in the basic system configuration are the multi-format camera, remote operation panel (ROP) and master setup unit
(MSU).
The MSU is not needed if a multiple number of cameras are not going to be controlled.

3. Equipment connections
To use the unit, place it as shown in the figure, and install it on a flat
surface.
pWhen the unit is to be housed in a rack, obtain the shelf and
other parts separately.
pWhen using the multipurpose mounting holes (which support M3
screws) on the side panels of the unit, ensure that the following
conditions are satisfied:

Screws used: M3 with a length of 10 mm or less
Maximum load: Max 5 kg per mounting hole

pBefore proceeding with the connections, check that the power of the unit and multi-format camera (AK-HC3500) is OFF.
pUse the optical fibre multi cable to connect the unit and multi-format camera (AK-HC3500).
Connect only the AK-HC3500 camera: Do not connect any other model.
pUse a dedicated cable to connect the unit to the remote operation panel (ROP) or master setup unit (MSU).
pWhen the unit’s power switch is set to ON and then the camera’s power is set to ON, the camera can be controlled using the
ROP or MSU.
pThe camera statuses are shown on the picture monitor. £Refer to “4. Picture monitor (PM) displays” on page 14.
When establishing the unit’s settings by menu operations, the menu screens are displayed on the picture monitor.

pWhen establishing the unit’s settings by Web settings from a personal computer, use a crossover cable (10Base-T or
100Base-TX) to connect the personal computer directly to the unit.

wPicture monitor (PM) displays
Switching the display
Display the camera statuses, warnings and other information on the picture monitor using the operation panel of the ROP or
MSU. Press the character switch on the operation panel of the ROP or MSU to show the desired information.
The displays are cleared when the character switch on the operation panel of the ROP or MSU is held down for at least one
second.
Transition of displays
When trouble is detected, the warning information is automatically displayed on the picture monitor.
If trouble is detected even if the status information or operation information is already displayed on the picture monitor, priority is
given to the display of the warning information.
The descending sequence of priority for the displays on the picture monitor is as follows: warning displays £operation/auto
displays £status displays £menu displays £no display.
When the warning information with the highest priority is no longer displayed, the warning information with the next highest
priority is displayed.

Iris display
When the information display on the picture monitor is not shown, it can be shown by
pressing the character switch on the operation panel of the ROP or MSU.
The camera number appears at the top left of the screen, the iris level is displayed
at the bottom of the screen, and the iris f-value is shown at the bottom right of the
screen.
Set each item to be displayed on the “PM View Setting” screen that opens after
“Maintenance” has been selected on the menu.
However, this screen will not appear if the menu’s “Iris Level” setting is OFF.

Status displays
On the iris display screen, the statuses are displayed by pressing the character
switch on the operation panel of the ROP or MSU.
The camera number, scene file number and shutter value appear at the top of the
screen, and the ND/CC filter values, gain level and iris f-value are shown at the
bottom of the screen.
Set each item to be displayed on the “PM View Setting” screen that opens after
“Maintenance” has been selected on the menu.
However, if the information to be displayed on the picture monitor is not shown
when the menu’s “Iris Level” setting is OFF, this screen will be shown first when the
character switch on the operation panel of the ROP or MSU is pressed.

Operation displays (AUTO)
If the AWB function, ABB function or AUTO SETUP function has been activated when a menu is not displayed on the picture
monitor, information on the operation performed appears at the bottom of the screen.
When the AUTO SETUP operations are displayed, they will remain displayed until the operations are completed.
The display is cleared 4 seconds after the operations are completed.
If the operations cannot be completed, they will remain displayed until the NG items of the AUTO function are released.
The display time can be changed using menu “Maintenance” £“PM Operation STAT” £“Status Disp Time”.
