The SideStream drug container is intended for
single patient use.
1.1 Standard compliance
The Porta-neb portable nebulizer units are
manufactured and tested to the requirements
of EN60601-1:1990 +A1:1993, A2:1995 &
A13:1996; EN60601-1-2:2002.
Compliant with the WEEE/RoHS
recycling directives. If you are subject to
the WEEE/RoHs directives, contact
Philips Respironics for the passport
for recycling this product.
Warnings
• Make sure that the electrical connection is
secure.
• When you are using the Porta-neb, be careful
to keep the electrical parts away from water.
• Unplug the unit from the power socket:
• when the treatment is finished;
• before any cleaning procedure of the unit;
• in case of failure or malfunction of the unit.
• The unit should not be used in the presence
of anaesthetic mixture flammable with air,
oxygen or nitrous oxide.
• This is a medical device for aerosol therapy
and may only be used with medication
prescribed or recommended by a doctor.
• Refer also to the warnings throughout this
manual.

2 Your Porta-neb nebulizer
compressor system
This booklet will help you to understand how
to use your Porta-neb SideStream to get the
best treatment. If you have any problems, your
doctor or nurse will be able to help you.
Warning
Air is drawn into the Porta-neb through the air
vents on the sides. Be careful not to cover or
block these.

3 Before you start
3.1 Setting up your Porta-neb
1 Push the mains lead into the mains socket
on the side of the Porta-neb, ensuring that
it is fully inserted. Then push the 3-pin plug
into the mains supply.
2 Next, connect one end of the long, clear
tubing (Duratube) onto the air flow outlet
on your Porta-neb.

3 Then, push the other end of the Duratube
onto the stem at the bottom of your
SideStream drug container.
Your Porta-neb is now ready.
4 SideStream
4.1 Filling the SideStream nebulizer
with your medication
Make sure that you have had instructions about
the use of your medication.
4 Unscrew the base of the SideStream drug
container.
5 Put the medication into the base of the
SideStream drug container. For more
stability when filling medication, use the
post on Porta-neb to hold the SideStream
nebulizer.
6 Screw the top of the SideStream nebulizer
back onto the base.
7 Connect one end of the Duratube onto the
air flow outlet on your Porta-neb.
8 Then, push the other end of the Duratube
onto the stem at the bottom of your
SideStream drug container.
9 Now connect either the mouthpiece or
the mask to the top of the SideStream drug
container.

4.3 After your treatment
10 Switch off the Porta-neb.
11 Remove the mask or mouthpiece and
Duratube from the SideStream drug
container.
12 Unscrew the SideStream drug container
and wash the three pieces in warm soapy
water, together with the mouthpiece or
mask.
Warning
Never put the Duratube in water or any other
liquids.
13 Reconnect the Duratube onto the
SideStream and switch the Porta-neb on
for a few seconds to blow out any trapped
medication.
14 Switch off the Porta-neb and remove the
Duratube.
The use of a mouthpiece instead of a mask may
help to avoid drug aerosol irritating the eyes.
Some medications should only be administered
using a mouthpiece.
Note
If your doctor has told you to dilute the
solution, empty the medication in the same way
and then add the amount of saline your doctor
instructed.
4.2 Taking your treatment
You will probably be given help on how to take
your treatment by a doctor or nurse.
Remember to relax as much as possible so you
get the most benefit from your medication. Sit
upright in a chair or in bed.
When you are ready, switch the Porta-neb
on at the on/off switch (position I is on and
O is off).
Your treatment will now begin.
Breathing
Do not try to breathe quickly. The treatment
should not be hard work. If you get breathless
during treatment, you may be breathing too
quickly. If you want to take a short break
during the treatment you can switch off your
Porta-neb. Treatment is finished when the
SideStream drug container begins to ‘spit’.

16 As soon as the filter no longer looks white
and clean it should be changed (usually
after three months). Filters will need to
be replaced more frequently if you have
smokers in your home.
17 To change the filter, unscrew the plastic
dome, take out the old filter and put in a
new one. Then screw the dome back on.
6 Accessories and spare parts
We recommend that you change the following
parts at least once per year:
• SideStream drug container
• Mouthpiece
• Duratube
The air inlet filter should be replaced at least
every three months.
If you need advice, telephone customer service.
You will need to quote the name of the drug
you use and the serial number of your Porta-
neb, which you will find inside the lid of your
Porta-neb.
15 To prevent the jets from becoming blocked
with medication, the SideStream drug
container must be boiled once a week, in
water with 2-3 drops of liquid detergent
for 10 minutes. (Take apart the SideStream
drug container before boiling).
Cautions
• When you clean the SideStream drug
container be careful not to damage the
jet holes (see diagram below).
• Never use a cleaning brush or put paper
clips or needles into the jet holes. This
will damage the drug container.

5 Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
In addition to your routine cleaning after use,
the SideStream drug container must be boiled
once a week.
Warning
The air filter and the Duratube must not be
cleaned in any liquids and should be replaced if
dirty.
5.2 Care for your Porta-neb and
its air filter
Your Porta-neb should be cleaned by wiping
the inside and outside of the case with a damp
cloth. The filter which cleans the air that you
use during treatment, gets dirty over time. If
it gets blocked the Porta-neb does not work
properly.

Charges will be incurred if:
a) The Porta-neb SideStream system is
returned and no fault is found.
b) Damage to the Porta-neb SideStream
system has been caused by the user, e.g.
Porta-neb compressor has been dropped,
drugs/water etc. spilt into the motor or
someone has tampered with it.
The remainder of the system which consists
of the Duratube, mouth-piece and masks
are not covered by these guarantees. This is
because these items are low-cost, limited-life
components and due to individual handling,
cleaning and sterilisation, it is not possible to
accurately predict the life of these items.
Your commitment to us
To regularly clean and maintain the Porta-neb
compressor and SideStream drug container in
accordance with the instructions. Ensure that
the Porta-neb is serviced only by the qualified
engineers, using Philips Respironics approved
parts.
Only genuine Philips Respironics parts should
be used within your Porta-neb SideStream
system and all system parts are replaced at
least once a year. Failure to maintain your
system and replace critical parts such as the
air filters (4 times a year) and SideStream drug
container (once a year) may adversely affect
your treatment and condition.
This guarantee does not affect your statutory
rights.
Service
Servicing on all Philips Respironics compressors
can be carried out by the following engineers
using the current Philips Respironics service
manual and the recommended test equipment:
• Engineers trained and certified by
Philips Respironics.
• Hospital EBME engineers who have gained an
Electrical or Mechanical ONC qualification.

7 Guarantee and service
Our commitment to you
The Philips Respironics Porta-neb compressor
is guaranteed against faults in materials and
workmanship for three years after purchase
(equipment must be cleaned and maintained in
accordance with the instructions).
If anything should go wrong with your
Porta-neb compressor within three years
from date of purchase, simply contact
Philips Respironics who will advise you how
to return the Porta-neb for repair.
The Philips Respironics SideStream drug
container is guaranteed for 12 months from
the date of purchase, based on 4 x 6 minute
treatments per day, i.e. 1460 treatments (the
SideStream drug container must be cleaned as
shown in the instructions).

Only Philips Respironics approved parts may
be used to service this equipment. Use of non-
approved parts may invalidate the compressor’s
test certificate and warranty.
We recommend you have your Porta-neb
serviced every 12 months by Philips Respironics
or a suitably qualified engineer.

Fuse
You may need to change the fuse (T2 A / 250 V)

9 Frequently asked questions
9.1 If things go wrong
Unit does not run. The main switch on
top of the Porta-neb does not light.
Possible solution: Push mains lead firmly into
socket. Replace the fuse on the Porta-neb in
the mains lead socket.
The switch lights up but the Porta-neb
runs slowly.
Possible solution: Check filter - part no. 2153A
The switch lights up but the Porta-neb
does not run.
Possible solution: Return the Porta-neb
for service.
Unit runs but SideStream drug container
makes little mist.
Possible solution: Clean the SideStream drug
container by boiling in water with 2 drops of
liquid detergent for 10 minutes. Do not use
a cleaning brush. You may need to buy a new
SideStream drug container.
SideStream drug container bubbles but
makes no mist.
Possible solution: Take the SideStream drug
container to pieces and clean as explained
above.

3 Avant de démarrer
3.1 Préparation de votre Porta-neb
1 Raccordez le câble électrique à la prise
d’alimentation sur le côté du Porta-neb en
vérifiant qu’il est complètement enfoncé.
Branchez ensuite la fiche électrique au
secteur.
2 Puis raccordez une extrémité de la
tubulure (Duratube) à la sortie d’air de
votre Porta-neb.
3 Ensuite raccordez l’autre extrémité de
la tubulure à la tige située au bout du
réservoir à médicament du SideStream.
Votre Porta-neb est maintenant prêt à
fonctionner.
4 SideStream
4.1 Versement du médicament dans le
nébuliseur SideStream
Assurez-vous d’avoir reçu des instructions sur
l’utilisation de votre médicament.
4 Dévissez la partie inférieure du réservoir à
médicament du SideStream.
5 Versez le médicament dans la partie
inférieure du réservoir à médicament du
SideStream. Pour plus de stabilité lors
du remplissage, utilisez le support sur le
Porta-neb pour bien tenir le nébuliseur
SideStream.
6 Revissez les deux parties du nébuliseur
SideStream.

4.2 Prise du traitement
Un médecin ou un(e) infirmier(ière) vous
expliquera probablement comment prendre
votre traitement.
Pour profiter au mieux d’un traitement efficace
il est essentiel d’être détendu au maximum.
Asseyez-vous en position droite soit sur une
chaise, soit sur un lit.
Une fois prêt, allumez le Porta-neb en faisant
basculer l’interrupteur en position I (le Porta-neb
est éteint en position O et allumé en position I).
Votre traitement peut maintenant commencer.
Respiration
Ne respirez pas trop vite. Le traitement ne doit
pas vous fatiguer. Si vous êtes essoufflé pendant
le traitement, cela signifie que vous
respirez
trop vite. Si vous avez besoin de quelques
minutes de repos vous pouvez éteindre votre
Porta-neb. Le traitement est fini lorsque
le
nébuliseur SideStream commence à “crachoter”.
7 Connectez une extrémité de la tubulure
Duratube sur la sortie de l’air de votre
Porta-neb.
8 Poussez ensuite l’autre extrémité de la
tubulure Duratube sur la tige située au bout
du réservoir à médicament du SideStream.
9 Branchez l’embout buccal ou le masque à la
partie supérieure du nébuliseur SideStream.
L’emploi d’un embout buccal au lieu d’un
masque peut empêcher que l’aérosol cause des
irritations oculaires. Certains médicaments
ne devraient être inhalés qu’avec l’aide d’un
embout buccal.
Remarque
Si votre médecin vous a instruit de diluer la
solution, versez le médicament de la même
façon et ajoutez la dose recommandée de
solution saline.

15 Pour éviter l’obturation des orifices des
diffuseurs, faites bouillir le réservoir à
médicament du SideStream une fois par
semaine dans de l’eau additionnée de
deux ou trois gouttes de liquide vaisselle,
pendant 10 minutes (détachez le réservoir à
médicament du SideStream avant de le faire
bouillir).

• Lorsque vous nettoyez le réservoir à
médicament du SideStream, prenez soin
de ne pas endommager les orifices des
diffuseurs (voir schéma ci-dessous).
• L’utilisation de brosse, aiguille ou
trombone est interdite; cela risque
d’endommager le réservoir à
médicament.

4.3 Après le traitement
10 Éteignez le Porta-neb.
11 Détachez le nébuliseur SideStream de la
tubulure Duratube et de l’embout buccal ou
du masque.
12 Dévissez le nébuliseur SideStream et lavez
les 3 composants ainsi que l’embout buccal
ou le masque dans de l’eau savonneuse
chaude.
Avertissement
N’immergez jamais la tubulure Duratube dans
l’eau ou dans d’autres liquides.
13 Rattachez la tubulure au nébuliseur
SideStream et remettez le Porta-neb
en marche pendant quelques secondes
pour éliminer les dernières traces du
médicament.
14 Éteignez le Porta-neb et détachez la
tubulure.

6 Accessoires et pièces
détachées
Il est conseillé de changer les pièces suivantes
au moins une fois par an:
• Réservoir à médicament du SideStream
• Embout buccal ou masque
• Tubulure Duratube.
Le filtre d’entrée de l’air est à remplacer au
moins tous les trois mois.
Si vous avez besoin de conseils, veuillez
téléphoner au service clientèle. On vous
demandera le nom de votre médicament ainsi
que le numéro de série de votre Porta-neb,
que vous pouvez trouver sous le couvercle du
Porta-neb.

5 Entretien
5.1 Nettoyage
En plus de votre nettoyage normal après toute
utilisation, vous devriez aussi faire bouillir le
réservoir à médicament du SideStream une fois
par semaine.
Avertissement
Le filtre à air et la tubulure ne doivent pas
être trempés dans du liquide et doivent être
remplacés s’ils sont sales.
5.2 Entretien de votre Porta-neb et de
son filtre à air
Nettoyez périodiquement votre Porta-neb
en essuyant l’intérieur et l’extérieur avec un
chiffon humide. Le filtre, qui a pour fonction de
purifier l’air pendant le traitement, se salit dans
un certain temps. S’il se bloque, le Porta-neb
ne fonctionnera pas correctement
16 Changez le filtre dès qu’il perd sa blancheur
et sa propreté (habituellement après trois
mois). Les filtres auront besoin d’être
remplacés plus fréquemment si vous avez
des fumeurs dans votre domicile.
17 Pour changer le filtre, dévissez le dôme
transparent, enlevez le filtre, introduisez le
nouveau filtre et revissez le dôme.
