WARNING - HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS SYMBOL
This product is not specically designed for use in hazardous environments, for example in explosive
atmospheres. If the product is to be used in hazardous environments we recommend that the user
ensures suitable protective measures are taken.

CAUTION - HANDLING OF ELECTROSTATIC-SENSITIVE DEVICES SYMBOL
Certain semiconductor devices used in this equipment are liable to damage due to static voltage.
Observe the following precautions when handling these devices in their unterminated state, or
sub-assemblies containing these devices:
1. Persons removing sub-assemblies from equipment using these devices must be earthed by a
wrist strap and a resistor at the point provided on the equipment.
2. Soldering irons used during the repair operations must be low voltage types with earthed tips and
isolated from the mains voltage by a double insulated transformer.
3. Outer clothing worn must be unable to generate static charges.
4. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) tted with these devices must be stored and transported in
anti-static bags.
WARNING - DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK SYMBOL
This unit may contain hazardous voltages. Before removing the unit from the rack remove all supplies
and disconnect user I/O signals.
If the unit has removable modules, unused slots in the chassis must be populated with blanking
panels to prevent access to user I/O signals that may be present. Blanking panels are available to
order from Pickering. If the product is not used in this manner for example by using an extender card
then additional care must be taken to avoid contact with exposed signals.
Not to be used in safety critical circuits, refer to the Pickering Interfaces’ terms & conditions of sale.
This unit must not be used for the switching of Mains Circuits. For the switching of voltages up to the
unit’s full specication, Secondary Circuit power supplies and the Device Under Test must be fully
isolated from the Mains Circuit and the safety earth.
The chassis must be correctly installed and be connected to mains or factory safety ground,
please refer to the installation section of this manual.

For the purposes of this document, a Mains Circuit is an installation classied as Overvoltage
Category II up to 300V. Separation between the Secondary Circuit and Mains Circuit is achieved
by a transformer in which the primary windings are separated from the secondary windings by
reinforced insulation, double insulation, or a screen connected to the protective conductor terminal.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
All cleaning and servicing requires the equipment to be isolated and disconnected from the power source and user I/O
signals (refer to the Maintenance Section).
• Appropriate manual handling procedures should be followed as dictated by the weight of the individual module or
the combined weight of the modules & chassis.
• Should a fault occur with the module or chassis, immediately isolate and disconnect the incoming power to the
chassis and the user I/O signals.
• Ensure the equipment is installed, operated and maintained by trained and authorised personnel.
• For suitably equipped products in the event of an emergency press the red “emergency stop” button situated on
the front of the unit.
WARNING - RACK MOUNTING
If it is required to t this unit into a 19 inch rack, its weight must be
supported by side brackets, runners or a suitable equipment shelf.
The xing holes in the front panel anges are designed only for
securing the device in the rack and must NOT be used to support
the weight of the whole device.
Please refer to Appendix A for the procedure for tting the
supplied anges to either side of the front panel.

The 65-219 is a modular matrix platform designed to provide a
large matrix solution with 2A current carrying capacity on all Y
paths.
Matrices are created by populating the 65-200 chassis with plugin
modules with access to the X axis on 15-pin D-type connectors
and the Y axis on 50-pin D-type connectors. The chassis is
capable of supporting matrices with a Y axis size of 20 or 40 and X
axis sizes up to 60 in increments of 10. Users can specify as many
or as few plugin modules as they require and can eld upgrade the
chassis to extend the matrix.
The chassis supports up to 6 plugin modules. These plugins can
be X or Y types:
The X type plugins have a 10(X)x40(Y) or 10(X)x20(Y) matrix
with connections on a 15-pin D-type plug. Isolation relays
are included to minimize capacitance loading and maximize
bandwidth. A second 15-pin D-type plug is provided for loop-
thru connections.
The Y type plugins have two 50-pin D-type plugs, each
providing connection to the Y-Bus via isolation relays. These
connections provide access for both Y and Y Loop-thru allowing
easy expansion of the system. The chassis can have none
of these plugin modules (no direct Y access), 1 or more – the
latter providing a simple means of adding Switched Signal
connections for additional measurement equipment.
Cooling for the chassis is provided by rear fans and front air
intakes ensuring no wasted space when it is rack mounted. The
cooling system is adaptive, minimizing acoustic noise when used
in quiet laboratory environments. Unused chassis slots are lled
using supplied blanking pieces to ensure correct air ow.
Plugins are loaded into the chassis via the front panel, greatly
improving the exibility and ease of maintenance of the unit.
Configuring the Matrix
To select the parts that you need to create a matrix simply:
• Specify a 65-200-001 Modular Matrix Chassis.
• Add 65-219-10x Y Plugin Modules as required.
• Add 65-219-20x X1 to X10 Plugin Modules needed to make up
the X dimension of the matrix – simply divide the X size by 10
and round up to the next integer to nd the number required.

Interfaces. Illustrated is the LXI 65-110 200MHz RF
Matrix, available in sizes up to 104x16
Also available from Pickering are the 60-102B and
60-103B LXI Modular Chassis. These are 7 and 18
slot chassis capable of hosting any of our range of PXI
switching and programmable resistor modules under LXI
control via a Gigabit Ethernet interface

Mass Interconnect
We recommend the use of a mass interconnect solution when an Interchangeable
Test Adapter (ITA) is required for a PXI or LXI based test system. Our modules are
fully supported by both Virginia Panel and MacPanel.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The 65-219 is a modular switching system which is designed to provide a exible matrix solution with current carrying capability
of 2 Amps by the addition of plugin modules. The component parts are as follows:
• The modular 65-200-001 chassis is the basis of the system and consists of a backplane, power supply and controller card
housed in a 2U rack mountable chassis. The backplane is capable of hosting up to 6 plugin modules and distributes power,
contol signals and matrix Y connections between the plugins. The controller card is based on an embedded processor
and provides contol and management of the matrix via an LXI compliant LAN interface. A basic block diagram is shown
in Figure 2-1.
• The 65-219-201 is a 10x40 matrix plugin module and forms the basis of a switching matrix with a 40 connection wide Y-bus.
As well as the switching matrix, the plugin includes Y isolation switches for backplane signals and X isolation switches for
X loop-thru signals. The front panel of the plugin has two 15-pin D-type connectors, one for X and one for X loop-thru. Up
to six of these plugins can be tted into the chassis to create a 60x40 matrix with only X-bus access. A switching diagram
for the 10x40 plugin module is shown in Figure 2-2.
• The 65-219-101 is a Y plugin for matrices with a 40 connection wide Y bus. It includes Y isolation switches for backplane
signals as well as isolation switches for the user acessible YA and YB signals. The front panel has two 50-pin D-type
connectors, one for YA and one for YB. Typically one of these plugins is needed for a matrix with Y-bus access, but a
second can be tted if extra Y bus access is required. A switching diagram for the Yx40 plugin module is shown in Figure
2-3.
• The 65-219-202 is a matrix plugin the same as the 65-219-201, but has a smaller matrix size of 10x20 and is the basis of
a matrix with a 20 connection Y-bus. A diagram for the 10x20 plugin is shown in Figure 2-4.
• The 65-219-102 is a Y plugin the same as the 65-219-101, but is for matrices with a 20 connection wide Y bus. A diagram
for the Yx20 plugin is shown in Figure 2-5.
• 65-219-203/204/205/206/207/208/209/210 are matrix plugin modules congured as sizes from 10x5 to 10x40 using
separate 10x5 matrix daughterboards and Y isolation daughterboards. Figure 2.6 shows the architecture of this plugin and
Table 2.1 shows the daughterboards used for each matrix size.
