II. SAFETY
TheJazzy1143isastate-of-the-artlife-enhancementdevicedesignedtoenhanceyourmobility.There are, how-
ever,certainsituations—includingsomemedicalconditions—whereyouwillneedtopracticeoperatingyourJazzy
1143 in the presence of an attendant. Below are some safety tips that are designed to help you become accus-
tomedtoyournew Jazzy.
WARNING! The Jazzy 1143 is a motorised vehicle. When you are seated in your Jazzy
1143 and you anticipate that you are going to be in a stationary position for an extended
period of time, turn off the power. This eliminates the possibility of unexpected move-
ment and conserves battery power.
TRANSFERS
Transferring onto and offofyour Jazzy1143 requiresa good sense of balance. Be sure to havean attendant or
healthcareprofessional present whilelearningtoproperlytransferyourself.Toeliminatethepossibilityof injury,
weask thatyouverifythefollowingbeforeattemptinga transfer:
1. Be sure thepower is turnedoff.
2. Be sure theJazzy 1143 isnotin the freewheelmode.
3. Make sure thearmrests areflipped up orremoved from thepower chair.
4. Tipthefootrestup; this helps tokeepyourfeetfromhanging up on the footrestduringthetransfer.
WARNING! Avoid putting all of your weight on the footrest. This may cause the Jazzy 1143
to tip and cause injury!
MOTOR VEHICLE TRANSPORT
ThoughyourJazzymaybeequippedwithapositioningbelt,thisbeltwasnotdesignedwiththeintentofproviding
properrestraintduringmotorvehicle transport.
nInanefforttoimprovethe safety of its unitsduringmotorvehicletransport, Pride has crash testednumerous
Jazzymodels. However, since there are unlimited variations of the Jazzy product, all variations could not
possiblybe tested. Therefore, Pride recommendsthat Jazzypower chair users should notbe transportedin
vehicles of any kind while in power chairs. As of this date, there are no standards approved for tie-down
systemsinamovingvehicleof any type to transportauserwhileina power chair.
nAlwaysbesure your Jazzy1143 is properly securedwhen being transported.
WEIGHT LIMITATIONS
YourJazzy1143 is ratedfora136-kg(21.6stone)maximum weight limit.
WARNING! Exceeding the weight limit voids your Jazzy warranty and may result in
personal injury!
STAIRS AND ESCALATORS
WARNING! Power chairs are not designed to travel up or down stairs or escalators. Always
use an elevator. If you try to navigate steps or escalators, you can cause injury to yourself
and others!

PUBLIC ROADS AND PARKING LOTS
WARNING! Do not operate your Jazzy 1143 on public streets and roadways. Please be
aware it may be difficult for traffic to see you when you are seated in your Jazzy. To
ensure your safety, always assume you cannot be seen. Obey all local pedestrian traffic
rules. Safety accessories like reflectors, fluorescent flags, and various lighting packages
are available to order from your Pride provider.
STEPS AND KERBS
WARNING! Do not attempt to climb or descend a step or kerb higher or lower than 5 cm. Never
attempt to proceed backwards down any step, kerb, or other obstacle. Doing so could cause the
Jazzy 1143 to tip.
INCLINES AND UNEVEN TERRAIN
Whenclimbing an incline, try tokeep thechair moving. If you must stop, start up againslowly andaccelerate
cautiously.
WARNING! When climbing an incline, do not zigzag or drive at an angle up the face of the incline.
Drive your Jazzy straight up the incline. This greatly reduces the possibility of a tip or fall. Always
exercise extreme caution when navigating an incline. Never travel up or down an incline that can
be potentially hazardous such as areas covered with snow, ice, or cut grass.
Whenmovingdownanincline, do so slowlyandinthe forward direction only. If your Jazzy1143starts to move
faster than you anticipated, allow the unit to come to a complete stop by releasing the joystick. Then push the
joystickforwardslightlyandcontinuetravelingdowntheincline.
MAXIMUM RECOMMENDED INCLINE
Pridehas performed extensiveincline testing withyour Jazzy 1143. Ourresults have shownthat the maximum
inclineyou can climbis 8.7% atmaximum weight capacity. The angle ofmost handicap accessramps is 8.7%.
Anyattempttoclimbasteeper slope may put yourJazzyinanunstableposition.

Your Jazzy has two main assemblies: the seat and the power base. See figure 1. There are a variety of seating
optionsthataredesignedtoaccommodate most users.Typically, the seating systemincludesarmrests,seatback,
seatbase,andjoystick/controller.Your Jazzy seatmayalsohavesome optional accessories attachedtoitsuchas
abasket, cane/crutchholder,a cup holder, ora power seat switch.
Thepower base is the heartof the Jazzy.The powerbase assembly includes two motor/brakeassemblies, two
anti-tipwheels,twodrivewheels, a caster assemblywithtworearcasterwheels, two batteries, powerseat,anda
