• Donotbackupthemotorhomewiththetowedve-
hicle attached.
Backing up with the towed vehicle attached will
causethetowedvehicleto“jackknife,”whichwilldam-
age the tow bar, the mounting bracket, the receiver
hitch, the towed vehicle’s front end, and/or the rear
ofthemotorhome.Backingupwiththetowedvehicle
attached is the primary cause of tow bar damage and
will void the warranty.
• Besurethevehiclecanbetowedbeforetakingiton
theroad.Somevehiclesmustbeequippedwithatransmis-
sionlubepump,anaxledisconnect,drivelinedisconnect
orfree-wheelinghubsbeforetheycanbetowed.Failure
to properly equip the vehicle will cause severe damage
tothetransmission.
Checkthevehicle manufacturer’s instructionsforthe
properprocedure(s)topreparethevehiclefortowing.
• The tow bar must be within the ‘Safe Zone’ — no
morethanthreeinchesaboveorbelowlevel.Towingwith
anout-of-leveltowbarwillcausesignificantwearandtear
onthetowbarandmountingbrackets,andonthetowed
vehicle’s suspension and frame. (See the section titled
“Staywithinthe‘SafeZone’”forfurtherinformation.)
• Thesteeringwheelmustbe unlocked and free to
turn when towing. Failure to do so can cause severe
tire and equipment damage. Check the manufacturer’s
instructionsforthepropertowingprocedure(s).
• Thetowedvehicleandallitscontentscannotex-
ceed 6,000 pounds. The Sterling All Terrain tow bar is
rated at a maximum of 6,000 pounds carrying capacity;
therefore the towed vehicle and all its contents cannot
exceed6,000pounds.
Inaddition,the receiverhitch,thesafetycables,and
allsupplementarytowingequipmentmustberatedatno
lessthantheweightofthetowedvehicleandallitscon-
tents.
• The tow bar must be secured with linch pins (or
optional padlocks) before towing. Unless the tow bar
is secured to both vehicles with all appropriate pins (or
padlocks),thetowedvehiclewilldetach.
• Inspectthesystembeforetowing—checkthemounts,
brackets,fasteners,bolts,wiring,thesafetycablesandall
othercomponentseachtimebeforetowing.
Additionally, check the tow bar bracket every 3,000
miles—inspectforanyfracturesorcracksinthesteel,or
anyvisibledamage.Donottowifthetowbarbracketis
damaged.
Additionally, check the torque on all bolts. (To find
thetorqueratings,refertotheinstallationinstructionsfor
themountingbracketandthetowbar.)
• Never tow a vehicle with one of a comparable
weight. Thetowedvehicle’sweightshouldneverexceed
40percentofthetowingvehicle’sweight.
Towingavehiclewithoneofsimilarweightwillcause
the towed vehicle to override the towing vehicle, result-

ingin“jackknifing,”“leapfrogging”or“fishtailing.”Serious
damage to both vehicles, as well as the towing system,
couldresult.
• Alwaysstandtoonesideandasclosetothemotor-
homeaspossiblewhenreleasingthetowbarlocking
mechanisms.Neverstandbetweentheadjustablearms,
orputanypartofyourbodybetweentheadjustablearms,
whenreleasing the towbar —always stand toone side.
Because the towed vehicle may jerk forward when the
lockingmechanismsarereleased,facethetowedvehicle
andstandasclosetothebackofthemotorhomeaspos-
sible before releasing the locking mechanisms, to keep
frombeinghitbythetowedvehicle.
• Alwaysusesafetycableswhentowing.Thesafety
cables, which are provided with the Sterling All Terrain,
mustconnectthetowedvehicletothetowingvehicleframe
toframe.
Ifthesafetycablesareeverreplaced,useonly6,000
poundorheavierratedsafetycables.
Additionally,checktoensurethatthesafetycablesare
theproperlength.Refertothesectionstitled“Howtouse
safety cables” and “Proper installation of safety cables”
forfurtherinformation.
• Checkthemotorhometurningradius.Somemotor-
home chassis have such a tight turning radius that you
candamageyourmotorhome,towed vehicle, or towbar
whileturningtoosharply.Beforegettingontheroadwith
yourtowedvehicle,youshouldtestyourturningradiusin
anemptyparkinglot.
Withthetowedvehicleattached,havesomeonewatch
asyouslowly turnsharplytoseewhetheryouhavethis
potentialproblem.Ifyoudo,notehowfaryoucansafely
turn the motorhome’s steering wheel, and be sure not
toturn it further when towing.Damage that results from
turningtoosharplyisnotcoveredbywarranty.
• Neverusethetowbartotowmorethanonevehicle.
Insomestatesitislegaltohaveonevehicletowingmore
thanjustonevehicle(forexample,atruckwhichistowing
atrailerwhichistowingaboat).However,whenusinga
towbar,nevertowmorethanonevehicle,ornon-warranty
damageorinjurymayresult.
• Thetowbarstingerfitsmotorhomehitchreceivers
with two-inch inner diameters. If the motorhome hitch
receiverisalargersize,attachatwo-inchadaptorsleeve
(notsupplied)tothehitchreceiver.
Damagetothetowbarstingerorothercomponentsof
thetowbar,abnormalwearpatternsonthetowedvehicle’s
tires,aswellasother,consequentialdamagemayresult
ifanadaptorsleeveisnotused.
• Keep the tow bar clean and well-lubricated. As is
thecasewithmostprecision equipment, frequentclean-
ingandcareresultsinbetterperformanceandlongevity.
Refertothesectiontitled“Careandcleaning”forfurther
information.
Failure to follow these instructions may cause prop-
erty damage, personal injury or even death.

Thefollowingsafetychecklistisprovidedtotheinstaller
withthe instructions forinstallingthe Sterling AllTerrain
towbar.Itisrepeatedhereforyourinformation.
Asaprecaution,verifythatallsafetyrequirementshave
beenfollowedbeforetowingthevehicle.
• Stresstotheownerthatthetowbarmustbewithin
the ‘Safe Zone’ — no more than three inches above or
belowlevel.Towingwithanout-of-leveltowbarwillcause
significant wear and tear on the tow bar and mounting
brackets, and on the towed vehicle’s suspension and
frame.(Seethesectiontitled“Staywithinthe‘SafeZone’”
forfurtherinformation.)
•Showthe owner howto properly operate thetow
bar. Familiarizeyourselfwiththefeaturesofthetowbar.
Demonstrate them to the owner, and ask the owner to
connectanddisconnectthetowbarandothercomponents
ofthetowingsystem,untiltheowneriscomfortablewith
itsoperation.
• Caution the owner to use a receiver hitch rated
higher than the actual weight of the towed vehicle.
Themotorhomereceiverhitchmusthaveaminimum
capacityofnolessthan the weight of thetowedvehicle
andallitscontents.
(TheSterlingAllTerrain towbarisratedatamaximum
of6,000poundscarryingcapacity;thereforeROADMAS-
TERhasused6,000poundsasastandardforratingthe
weightcapacityofallsupplementarytowingequipment,as
wellasthetowedvehicleandallitscontents,throughout
thismanual.)
•Thetowbar mustbeattachedtoa bracketwhich
is bolted to the towed vehicle’s frame or unibody. In
ordertobetowed,virtuallyallvehiclesrequireatowbar
mountingbracketthatisconnectedtotheframe,unibody
orchassisandextendsbeyondthebumper.
• Cautiontheownertosecurethetowbarwithlinch

pins(oroptionalpadlocks)beforetowing.Unlessthe
tow bar is secured to both vehicles with all appropriate
pins(orpadlocks),thetowedvehiclewilldetach.
• Advise the owner to use 6,000 pound or higher
rated safety cables. Six thousand pound-rated safety
cables are provided with the Sterling All Terrain; if the
safetycablesareeverreplaced,useonly6,000poundor
heavierratedsafetycables.
• Readtheinstructionsthoroughlybeforeinstalling
the ‘quick-disconnect’ (‘QD’) system and its compo-
nents. The tow bar will be attached to the QD system.
If the QD system is not properly aligned, centered and
positioned on the towed vehicle, the tow bar will not be
centeredonthetowedvehicle,whichmaycauseexcessive
tirewearandotherconsequential,non-warrantydamage.
• Theinstallermustbesurethatthevehicleissuit-
able or adaptable for towing. Some vehicles must be
equippedwithatransmissionlubepump,anaxlediscon-
nect, driveline disconnect or free-wheeling hubs before
theycanbetowed.Failuretoproperlyequipthevehicle
willcauseseveredamagetothetransmission.
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper
procedure(s)topreparethevehiclefortowing.
•TheinstallermustNOTusethetowbarasaground
for welding. Connectingagroundtothe‘A-frame’ofthe
tow bar will cause current to flow through the locking
spring, which will detemper the spring and destroy the
lockingmechanism.
• Under no circumstances should the tow bar be
welded to the vehicle,norshouldanyofthepre-punched
mountingholesbealtered.Anyweldingoralteringofthe
towbarwillvoidtheowner’swarranty.
Failure to follow these instructions may cause prop-
erty damage, personal injury or even death.
INSTALLINGTHE‘QUICK-DISCONNECT'SYSTEM
ThisROADMASTERtowbarisequippedwithanexclu-
sive“quick-disconnect”(or,“QD”)system.Beforeconnect-
ingthetowbartothevehicle,firstinstallthecomponents
oftheQDsystemtothemountingbracket.
Note: the quick-disconnect system is not used with
ROADMASTER ‘MS’ or ‘MX’ series mounting brackets.
If the towed vehicle has MS or MX brackets, proceed to
the next section — “Connecting the tow bar.” The quick-
disconnect system should be reserved, however, for sub-
sequent vehicles which may not have these brackets.
1. First,attachthequick-disconnects(“QDs,”parts“A”and
“B”inFigure1)tothetowbarmountingbrackets.Attach
theQDssothattheverticalpinoneachispointingup,as
showninFigure1.
Attach part “A”onthepassengerside,andpart“B”
onthedriver’sside.Usethesupplied½"x1½"bolts,the
two safety plates (parts “C”), and the flat washers, lock
washersandnuts,asshowninFigure1.
BothQDshavecableanchors—parts“D”and“E”in
Figure1—designedforsafetycableattachment.Boltcable
anchor“D”topart“A,”andcableanchor“E”topart“B,”
usingthesupplied½"x1"boltsandnuts.
Donottightenanyofthebolts—leavethemloosefor
now—theywillbetightenedlater.
Use all mounting hardware, the safety plates, and
the cable anchors. If all supplied materials are not used,
thequick-disconnects,thequick-disconnectbases,or
other components may vibrate loose, which may cause
property damage, personal injury or even death.
2. Now,test-fitthecrossbar—lowerthecrossbar(Figure
2)overthequick-disconnects.Theverticalpinsatthetop
ofbothQDsshouldfitthroughthetopholesattheends

of the crossbar (Figure 2), and the vertical pins at the
bottomofthecrossbarshouldfitthroughthelowerholes
onthequick-disconnects(Figure2).
3. Bothquick-disconnectsmustbepositionedsothatthe
crossbariscenteredtothefrontofthevehicle—measure
thedistancebetweenthesideofoneQDandthesideof
themountingbracketitisattachedto.Then,makecertain
thereisanequaldistancebetweentheotherQDandthe
othermountingbracket.
The quick-disconnects must be centered on the
mountingbrackets.Iftheyareattachedtoofartothe
left or the right, the tow bar will not be centered on
the towed vehicle, which will cause excessive tire wear
and other consequential, non-warranty damage.
4. Oncethecrossbarslidesonandoffeasily,torquethe
fourboltsto75ft./lbs.
Again, test-fit the
crossbar over the QDs,
to verify that the cross-
bar slides on and off eas-
ily. If it does not, adjust
theQDsagain.
5. Bothlinchpins must be
insertedthroughtheupper
holesintheverticalpinsin
parts“A”and“B,”asshown
inFigure2.
Bothlinchpinsmustbe locked.Therings(Figure3)
arespring-loaded—theymustbesnappedoverthepins,
as shown in Figure 3, with the curved side of the linch
pin touching the ring, in order to keep the QD bases
secure.
Towing vibrations will force the linch pins out un-
lesstheyareproperlylockedinplaceoverthevertical
pins on both quick-disconnects. Refer to Figure 3.
Failure to install the linch pins properly will result in
tow bar malfunction, loss and damage to the vehicle
and property, personal injury or even death.

Use caution when handling the tow bar — if your
hands, fingers or any part of your body are caught
between moving components, they can be pinched,
cut or otherwise injured.
1. Followtheprecedingsectioninthismanual—“Install-
ingthe‘quick-disconnect’system”—toattachthetowbar
quick-disconnects(“QDs”)andtheQDbases.
Note: the quick-disconnect system is not used with
ROADMASTER ‘MS’ or ‘MX’ series mounting brackets.
Instead, the tow bar is connected directly to the mounting
bracket with the base pins and linch pins.
With this exception, the instructions below apply.
2. Drivethevehiclewithinthreeorthree-and-a-halffeetof
themotorhomehitchreceiver.Thevehicledoesnothave
tobeperfectly centered to thehitchreceiver,justclose.
Then, put the vehicle in gear (park), set the emergency
brakeandchockoneofthewheels.
3. Withthetowbarinthefoldedposition(Figure4),insert
thestingerintothemotorhomehitchreceiverandattach
thestingertothehitchreceiverwiththehitchpinandclip
(Figure4).
Attachthetowbarsothatthelockingmechanisms
and the release latch are pointing up, as shown in
Figure 5. Components of the tow bar may be damaged
if the tow bar is attached with the release latch and
thelockingmechanismspointingdown.
4. Holdbothtowbararmsfirmlyandrotatethemup,so
thattheyarevertical,asshowninFigure4.
Never release the tow bar arms when they are in the
vertical position. The arms can fall and cause severe
personal injury.
5. Pushthereleaselatch(Fig-
ure6)forward,tobringbotharms
downtoahorizontalposition.

aligntheholesintheoutermostarm
withtheholesinoneofthetabson
thequick-disconnectbase(Figure7).
Attachthetowbararmtothequick-disconnectbase
withoneoftheincludedbasepins(Figure7).Attachthe
arm so that the head of the shoulder bolt (Figure 7) is
facingup.Lockthebasepinwithalinchpin(Figure7)or
optionalpadlock.
Thelinchpinmustbe locked.Thering(Figure8)is
spring-loaded—itmustbesnappedoverthepin,asshown
inFigure8,withthecurvedsideofthelinchpintouching
thering,inordertokeepthebasepinsecure.

5. Removethebasepinsandstorethetowbaronthe
motorhome by reversing
the connection procedure
(under“Connectingthetow
bar”).

mends replacing at least
oneofthelinchpinswithapadlock(partnumber301,302
or308)topreventaccidentalreleaseortheft.
The tow bar can be stored on the motorhome with
the arms rotated to the left or the right. To avoid the
possibility of damage to the bushings, rotate the arms
away from the engine exhaust.
The bushings at the end of the tow bar arms can
be warped by heat from the exhaust. If the bushings
are warped, the tow bar arms will not slide easily, or
they may not slide at all — it may be difficult to con-
nect or disconnect the tow bar until the bushings are
replaced.
Alwaysstopatthistime.Checkthetowbartoensure
thatbotharmsarelockedbeforeassuminghighwayspeed.
Additionally,checkthe other componentsofyour towing
system,toensurethattheyarefullyengaged.
Bothtowbararmsmustbelockedbeforetowing.If
they are not, the momentum of the towed vehicle will
apply excessive force to the tow bar arms and other
components of the towing system, which may cause
the towing system to fail, resulting in property dam-
age, personal injury or even death.
Donottowavehicleusingtowbarmountingbrack-
ets, safety cables, or a hitch receiver rated less than
the actual weight of the towed vehicle.
Ifthebrackets,safetycables,hitchreceiverorany
supplementary towing equipment is not rated at the
weight of the towed vehicle and all its contents, it may
fail during towing, causing property damage, personal
injury or even death.
If the motorhome hitch receiver has an extension,
do not tow if the tow bar is more than three inches
out of level.
Receiver extensions cause the towing system to
swing much higher and lower than towing systems
without extensions. This enlarged arc of motion cre-
ates excessive strain on the tow bar, brackets and
frame, which can cause the towing system to fail, caus-
ing property damage, personal injury or even death.

Bothtowbararmsmustbeattachedtothequick-
disconnectbasesandlockedwithalinchpin.Towing
vibrations will force the linch pins out unless they are
properlylocked in place over the base pinson both
quick-disconnectbases,asshowninFigure8.
Failuretoproperlyinstallandlockbothbasepins
will result in the loss of the towed vehicle, which may
cause property damage, personal injury or even death.
6. Now, swing the other arm to the opposite side and
connectitinthesamemanner.
7. Attachthesafetycablesandplugintheelectricalwir-
ingcord,accordingtothesupplier’sinstructions.
Beforetowingthevehicle,besurethesteeringisun-
locked,thetransmissionisinthepropersetting,andthe
emergencybrakeisreleased.Removethewheelchock.
Checkthemanufacturer’sspecifications,theowner’s
manual, or talk to the installer for the proper towing
procedure(s)orrequirement(s)forthevehicletobetowed.
Do not tow the vehicle until the tow bar is attached
with all pins or padlocks. Unless the tow bar is se-
cured to both vehicles with all appropriate pins or
padlocks, the vehicle will detach, which may cause
property damage, personal injury or even death.
Whenyoudriveaway,steerbrieflytotheleftandthen
totheright,toextend,self-centerandlockthetowbar.
DISCONNECTING THE TOW BAR
1. Disconnectingthetowbarisessentiallythereverse
ofconnectingit.First,alwaystrytoparkonlevelground,
with the towed vehicle in line with the motorhome. This
will eliminate most of the tension between the vehicles,
allowingforaneasierdisconnect.
2. Disconnecttheelectricalwiringharness,safetycables,
andanyothertowingsystemaccessories.
3. Liftthereleasehandlesoneachtowbararm(Figure
9)toreleasethelockingmechanisms.
(Usually,oneofthehandleswillrequiremorepressure
to release. This is the arm that has the majority of the
tensionbetweenthetwovehicles.)
Alwaysputthetowedvehicleingear(park),setthe
emergency brake and chock one of the wheels after
lifting the release handles, and before removing the
basepins.Failuretodosomayresultina‘runaway’
vehicle or may crush you between the towed vehicle
and the motorhome, causing property damage, per-
sonal injury or even death.
4. Put the towed vehicle in gear (park), set the emer-

The Sterling All Terrain tow bar comes equipped with
afully-wired motorhome-to-towed vehicleelectrical cord —
simplyplugthecordintothesocketsonthemotorhomeand
thetowedvehicle.
Ifyoushouldneedtorewiretheplugsandsockets,follow
theinstructionsbelow.
Wiring the plug for a four-wire system
1. Inserttheendoftheelectricalcordthroughoneofthe
cableguides.
2. Useatestlighttoidentifythewiresconductingtheleft
turn/stop,ground,rightturn/stopandtaillightsignals.(Ifthe
motorhomehasasix-orseven-wireelectricalsystem,the
otherwiresarenotused.)
3. Strip¼" to 3/8" of insulationfrom theends. Connect
thewiresaccordingtoFigure10;applyasiliconesealantto
theattachmentpointstohelppreventdamagefrommoisture
andcorrosion.
Wiringthesocketforafour-wiresystem
1. Ifnecessary,findasuitablelocationtoinstalloneofthe
electricalsocketbracketsonthefrontofthetowedvehicle,
inreachoftheexistingfour-wireharness.Thebracketmust
beattachedclosetothecenter,andtoasurfaceofsufficient
strengthtoholditfirmlyinplace.
Attach the mounting bracket close to the center of
thetowedvehicle. Ifthebracketisattachedtoo farto
either side, the bracket and the electrical socket may
be pulled away when the motorhome turns.
2. Strip¼"to3/8"ofinsulationfromtheendsofthewires.
Loosenthesetscrewatthebackofthesocket,andpush
the inner connector out the front. Then run the four-wire
electricalcordthroughthebackofthehousing.
3. Loosenallofthesetscrewsonthesideofthesocket,
andconnectthewirestothebackofthesocket,asshown
inFigure11.
4. Tighten all the set screws, and check each wire to
ensurethatitisfastenedsecurely.Applyaclearsilicone
sealant around each wire entry and set screw indenta-
tion to help weatherproof the socket and secure the set
screws.
5. If the motorhome does not have the correct wiring
socket already, you can replace it with the new socket
forthefour-wirecord,andconnecttheappropriatewires
tothenewsocket,accordingtoFigure11.

HOW TO USE SAFETY CABLES
Safetycablesareanintegralpartofyourtowingsystem.
They are a secondary safety device, required by law in
manystates.Thissection,andthefollowingsection,will
acquaintyouwithhowtousethemproperly.
• Thesafetycablesmustconnectthetowingvehicleto
thetowedvehicle,frametoframe.
• Thesafetycablesmustberatedat6,000poundsweight
capacityperpair,orhigher.Thisisthemaximumweight
capacity of the tow bar — the towed vehicle and all its
contentscannotexceed6,000pounds.
• Pullthesafetycablessothatalltheslackisatthemo-
torhome.Makesurethereisenoughslackinthecables
at the motorhome to allow for sharp turns — if there
is not enough slack, the towing system will be severely
damagedwhenthemotorhometurnsasharpcorner.
• Thesafetycablesmustbethecorrectlength…
• Makesurethecablesarenottooshort—ifyouusea
receiverhitchextensionorotherequipmentthatextends
the distance between the towed vehicle and the motor-
home,thestandardcablesmaybetooshort.Ifthecables
aretooshort,thetowingsystemwillbeseverelydamaged
whenthemotorhometurnsasharpcorner.
(Safety cable extensions in a variety of lengths are
availablefromROADMASTER.)
• Makesurethecablesarenottoolong—thecables
should not hang down to the extent they may catch on
obstructions,ordragontheground.Thismuchslackcould
cause damage to the towing system, the towed vehicle,
orthemotorhome.
Ifthecablesaretoolong,wraptheexcesscablearound
the tow bar to take up the slack. Make sure there is
enoughslackinthecablesatthemotorhometoallow
for sharp turns.
Damagecausedbyusingsafetycablesofanincorrect
lengthisnotcoveredunderwarranty.
• Alwayscrossthecablesunderthehitchreceiver,as
shown in Figure 16 under “Proper installation of safety
cables.”Intheunlikelyeventthetowbarseparatesfrom
themotorhome,crossingthecableswillhelppreventthe
tow bar from dragging on the ground, which can cause
thetowbarto“polevault”thetowedvehicle.
•SomeROADMASTERtowbarmountingkitswithre-
movablearmsusetwosafetycablesoneachside.Iftwo
setsofsafetycablesarerequired,bothmustbeused.This
isrequiredbylaw.Refer to“Properinstallationofsafety
cables”forfurtherinformation.

PROPER INSTALLATION OF SAFETY CABLES
SomeROADMASTERtowbarmountingbracketswith
removablearms,suchastheonesinFigures16and17,
usebothalongsafetycableandashortsafetycableon
eachside.
Each long safety cable runs from the towing vehicle
toacable anchor.Connecteachlongsafetycabletoa
cableanchorbyinsertingitthroughthetopoftheslotin
thecableanchorbracketanddraggingitdown.
Bothendsoftheshort safety cablesareconnectedby
quick links. One quick link is attached to the mounting
bracketandoneisattachedtothecableanchor.
Unscrew the nuts on each quick link to connect the
safetycableloops.Finger-tightenthenutsfirmly,untilthe
loopiscompletelyclosed,tosecuretheattachment.
Do not substitute carabiners or other devices for the
quicklinks—thequicklinksaredesignedtoholdtheweight
ofatowedvehicle;carabinersorotherdevicesarenot.
OnlyROADMASTERbracketkitswithremovablearms
have these short safety cables. Other bracket kits are
bolteddirectly tothe frameof thetowed vehicleand do
notrequireshortsafetycables.
IfyourROADMASTERbracketkitcontainsshortsafety
cables, refer to the installation instructions for complete
information.
The safety cables must be carefully routed so that
they cannot become pinched, frayed, scraped or oth-
erwise damaged, and so they will not drag when going
over dips or low spots.
Do not use the cables if they show any signs of
wear or damage — immediately discontinue towing and
replace the cables.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in
cable failure, which may cause property damage, per-
sonal injury or even death.
Ifthequicklinksarenotcompletelytightened,with
the loop closed, the safety cables may detach. In the
event of a towing system failure, the towed vehicle will
detach, which may cause property damage, personal
injury or even death.
If your towing system requires two sets of safety
cables, always use both the long and the short safety
cables. Connect them as shown in Figures 16 and 17.
Otherwise, in the event of a towing system failure, the
towed vehicle will detach, which may cause property
damage, personal injury or even death.

STAYWITHINTHE‘SAFEZONE'
Compare these two measurements. To be within the
SafeZone,theycannotbemorethanthreeinchesapart
if the base pin is above or below the motorhome hitch
receiver.SeeFigure18.
If the tow bar is not within the Safe Zone, you must
purchase a hitch accessory to raise or lower the hitch
receiver.ROADMASTERhasthreeaccessoriesavailable
—Hi-LowHitches,Hi-LowDrops,andDualHitchReceiv-
ers—whichwillraiseorlowerthehitchreceiverfromtwo
to10inches,dependingonthemodel.
Towingwiththetowbarmorethanthreeinchesabove
orbelowlevelwillvoidtheROADMASTERwarranty.
Failure to follow these instructions may cause prop-

Towingwithamotorhome-mountedtowbarwhichhas
an upward or downward slope puts undue strain on the
entiretowingsystem.Forthatreason,do not tow if the
towbarisnotwithinthe‘SafeZone’—nomorethan
three inches above or below level.
Towing a vehicle with a tow bar that is not within the
SafeZone willresult in significant wear and tear onthe
tow bar and brackets, significant wear and tear on the
vehicle’ssuspensionandframe,andtheeventualfailure
ofthetowingsystem.
To determine if the tow bar is within the Safe Zone —
first,connectthemotorhomeandtowedvehicleonlevel
ground.Next,measurethedistancefromthecenterofthe
motorhomereceiverdowntotheground.Then,measure
thedistancefromthecenterofoneofthebasepinsdown
totheground.

Asisthecasewithmostprecisionequipment,frequent
cleaningandcareresultsinbetterperformanceandlon-
gevity.Usethefollowingguidelinestokeepyourtowbar
cleanandwell-lubricated.
Alwayscleanthetowbarbeforelubricating.Useawa-
ter-solublecleanersuchasVoomRV(partnumber9911,
shown below) — it does an exceptional job of breaking
downroadfilm,dirtandgrease.
Cleanallmovingparts,payingspecialattentiontothe
towbararmsandthelockingmechanisms.Nomatterwhat
part you're cleaning, the method is the same — spray a
liberalamountofcleaneroverit;2)workthecomponent
backandforthtoworkoutanyaccumulateddirt;3)wipe
itdown;and4)repeatuntilclean.
To clean one of the tow bar arms, first remove the
tworubbercapsateitherendofthelockingmechanisms
(Figure19).Thenraisethearmandspraycleaneratthe
topoftheinner/outerarmassembly(Figure20).
Raisethetowbararmandworkthearmupanddown
to flush out dirt from the bottom of the assembly. Wipe
thedirtoffandrepeatuntilthearmisclean.
Repeatfortheotherarm.
Do not use petroleum-based products to clean or lu-
bricate the tow bar. Petroleum will attract dirt and dust,
which will impede the operation of the sliding arms
and/or other components. Certain petroleum products
may also corrode non-metallic components.
Damage caused by using a petroleum-based prod-
uct to clean or lubricate the tow bar is not covered
under warranty.
Aftercleaningthetowbar,wipeanyremainingcleaner
away.
To clean one of the locking mechanisms, first spray
cleanerintothemechanism,thenraisethetowbararm.
Move the release handle up and down to flush out dirt
fromthebottomoftheassembly.

the lubricant has dried, flex the tow bar components, to

anisms. After the lubricant has dried, move the release
handlesupanddowntoworkthelubricantin.
Alwayscleanthelockingmechanisms,asdescribed
above, before lubricating them. Silicone coats and cov-
ers in a thin layer. If it is not removed, it will reduce
theclearanceforthelockingmechanisms,preventing

Extended storage—beforestoringyourtowbarforan
extended period of time, be sure to clean and lubricate

A HIGH-GRADE ALLOY AND A BETTER PIVOT POINT — The
stock anti-sway bar (on the right) has a small diameter, 1020 grade
spring steel, and a rubber bushing. The RSS anti-sway bar (to the
left) has a large diameter, 4140 chromoly steel, and a polyurethane
bushing, making it many times more resistant to sway.
