1. IDENTIFYING THE MACHINE
The mower identification plate is affixed permanently to the body of the mower shown
in Fig. 1.

2. INTRODUCTION
 This instruction should be regarded as part of the basic equipment of the mower. When the
mower is turned over to a different user it should be in working condition and accompanied by
this instruction manual and all other basic equipment it should possess.
 Before operating this mower the user should first completely read the instructions in this manual
and should be familiar with general safety rules.
 The mower has been manufactured in accordance with all safety norms.
 Adhering to the instruction manual guarantees the user full safety during operation.
 In the event of any doubts regarding starting and operation of the mower please contact the
manufacturer.
 This operator’s manual is an indispensable part of any machine and is intended to familiarize
future user with principles of proper operation and use of the machine as well as the risks
involved.
GENERAL WARNING
During operation of the mower please observe all the warnings and safety
rules which are marked with this sign in the instruction manual.
WARNING!
Operation of the mower before reading the operator’s manual carefully as
well as operating by the unauthorized staff, especially by children, is strictly
forbidden.

3. PROPER USE
The mower is adjusted to work with FORTSCHRITT E 301; E 302; E303 with a power of
min. 60 kW.
A mower without crop scarifier or rollers is equipped with the „Perfect Cut” cutting bar.
In Tab. 1 the mowing height differences, depending on the tilt angle of the cutting bar are shown.

Note: Grass, which is very rare should be mowed with zero angle inclination.
 The rear mounted disc mower is intended to mow green fodder: grass, alfalfa and such on
permanent grassland (pastures), on crop fields without rocks, and to form loose rows of cut
fodder. The pasture or field being mown should be even, best if prepared by rolling. In the event
of a majority of tall grass the first and second mowing should be done at a height of 60 - 70 mm,
while with a majority of short grasses at a height of 50 mm. The last mowing should be done a
little higher - at 70 - 80 mm from the ground.

The mower is designed to work only with FORTSCHRITT E 301; E 302;
E 303.
WARNING!
Use of the mower for other purposes than above mentioned is forbidden.
Different use than the above mentioned will be considered as improper and
may lead to revoking of the warranty. Mower should be used, operated and
repaired only by people familiarized with its detailed specifications and with
safety rules and regulations. Willful changes of the mower will lead to
revoking of the warranty.

3.2. Design and working principle
The construction of KDF 390 mower shown in Fig. 2.
The drive on the cutterbar (3) is transmitted from mower FORTSCHRITT through jointed
shaft intersecting axis gear (4), PTO shaft (6) and intersecting axis gear (5).
On the cutterbar (3) there are discs with two knives each.
Cutterbar (3) is connected to the main frame (2), to which the suspension frame (1) is linked.
Suspension frame is connected to FORTSCHRITT by means of four pins. Over the cutterbar (2)
there are safety guards (10) and swath discs (7).

3.3. Standard equipmenet and spare parts
The mowers are sold with the following standard equipment:
 warranty card,
 instruction manual along with a catalog of spare parts and Declaration of Conformity,
 additional set of knives,
 mounting lever for quick knife changing,
 PTO shaft,
 spray paint (150 ml).
Optional extra equipment:
 holders for warning plate and lights,
 warning plates with combined lights and reflectors,
 warning triangle.
NOTICE:
Optional extra equipment should be ordered separately.

permission.

NOTICE:
The frequency of lubrication of the articulated telescoping shaft should be carefully
adhered to. Points shown in Fig. 3 should be lubricated every 50 hours. The
articulated telescoping shaft should also be lubricated before and after longer
periods of disuse.

4. SAFETY ADVICE AND WARNING
4.1. Safety rules and regulations
 During operation of the mower the Regulation of the Farm Ministry and Food Economy) from
12-01-1998 dealing with safety and hygiene during the operation of tractors, machinery, tools
and equipment used for farming (Dz. U. Nr 12/98 poz. 51), should be observed.
 Rear axis of the vehicle should be well weighted to keep the balance. If need be, use rear wheel
weights.
 The mower cannot be used if the vehicle has not been properly balanced.
 When mounting the mower on the vehicle be aware of the risk of wounding. The operator
should wear protective gloves.
 Operation without safety guards as well as with the damaged or raised guards is not allowed
(danger of the stones, etc. being thrown out). Damaged or worn safety guards should be replace
for new.
 During operation of farm machinery it is forbidden to open or remove any protective guards or
safety curtains.
 Condition of guards and its mounting should be checked regularly.
 DO NOT exceed 1050 PTO rpm.
 Nobody is allowed to remain within the danger area of at least 50 m. Particular caution is
necessary when operating near roads and in stoney areas.
 Any maintenance and adjustment work should only be done after the drive has been
disconnected and when the cutting discs have come to a complete standstill.
 Always check mower before starting work, in particular for damaged, missing and/or worn
knives and knife holders. Damaged or worn parts must be replaced.
 When the mower is lifted for repair on the 3-point linkage, it should be secured against falling
by a mechanical support or by chain.
 Any maintenance and adjustment work is allowed only with the mower lowered on the ground
or secured against falling by a mechanical support or by chain.
 Prior to performing any maintenance works, assembly, disassembly and break at work set the
machine onto a stable ground and protect against unintentional shifting.
 During cleaning machine, it should be used personal protection.
 The bolts and other fasteners have to be periodically checked and, if necessary, tightened or
replaced. DO NOT work with damaged or worn fasteners.
WARNING!
All service and repair operations must be done only after the
FORTSCHRITT’s engine has been stopped, all rotating parts have come to
the complete standstill and the cutterbar is on the ground.
WARNING! Working parts such as cutting knives and discs still rotate,
up to several seconds, before the rotor comes into complete standstill!
 No person nor object is allowed to be present on the mower or self-propelled machine
FORTSCHRITT when transported or operating.
 The operator is not allowed to leave the vehicle while driving.
 The mower shall never be started when it is lifted.
 The mower shall never be started, with people or animals near the machine.

WARNING!
Keep the children away from the mower both in operation and standstill.
 Always comply with safety decals describing hazards, and warning signs placed on the
machine.
 Do not let the vehicle's engine operate without any supervision. Before leaving the vehicle, turn
the engine off and take the ignition key out.
 Do not leave farm machinery on slopes or other descents without having provided sufficient
protection against its free runaway.
 Never stand between the vehicle and the mower, unless vehicle -mower aggregate is protected
against shifting with the vehicle's parking brake.
 In the event of any break in the equipment operation, turn off the drive. Before leaving the
tractor turn off the engine and remove the key from ignition, leave the cabin and make sure
there are no unauthorized persons in the cabin and close the door.
 If any part of the mower needs to be replaced, use only genuine spare parts according to spare
part list.
 Pay particular attention to PTO shaft guards and mower and vehicle spline shaft guards. Never
operate with damaged guards.
 The mower should be stored under roof and in manner that effectively prevents animals and
people from being injured.
 In case of a fatal failure, stop the machine's drive, turn the vehicle's engine off and take out the
ignition key. Then call for technical service, and if an accident (in this case: road accident)
occurs, respect first aid rules and contact responsible authorities.
 In order to keep the machine safe from fire, it is strongly recommended to keep it clean.
4.2. Qualifications of operator
To provide safe machine operation each person being the machine operator must meet the
following requirements:
 Operator should hold driving license, have ability to drive vehicles safely and know road traffic
rules.
 Operator must be in proper physical condition to be able to operate the machine.
 Operator must not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs and medicines, which all have
influence on vehicle driving and machine operation.
 Operator should be familiarized with this manual and follow its provisions.
 Operator should be familiar with working principles of both the tractor and the machine, and be
able to recognize and avoid hazards resulting from operation of the aggregate.
4.3. Conditions of connecting the mower with vehicle
 Prior to mounting the machine, examine technical condition of the mower's and vehicle’s hitch
assembly.
 Use only genuine pins and cotters to connecting the mower with vehicle.

4.4. Transport
 Every position change of the mower can only be done when there is nobody around (pay
particular attention to children).
 Driving speed should always be adjusted to current road conditions and local traffic
regulations.
 It is forbidden to ride or to transport any persons or unattached elements on the machinery.
 When taking turns pay particular CAUTION and consider the machine's weight and dimension.
WARNING!
It is forbidden to drive on public roads, if the mower's transport width is more
than 3 m.
4.4.1. Putting the mower onto another vehicle for transport
The driver and the carrier are responsible for mower’s transport safety. Equipment and parts
must be secured during transport.
To put the mower onto another vehicle in a safe way, please obey the following rules:
 seize the mower by any lifting devices only in the places indicated by the hook sign (Fig. 4),

 for mower lifting use only lifting devices with hoisting capacity bigger than mower’s weight
shown in data plate. It also concerns ropes and chains used for lifting,
 transport belts, belt suspensions, ropes cannot be damaged. Whenever damages to these parts
are spotted replace these with new ones,
 when mounting slings, chains, handles etc. always pay CAUTION to setting the machine's
centre of gravity properly (Fig. 5),
 to catch machines, pick ropes of adequate length, so that the angle between them is no greater
than 120°, and the angle between the strand and the vertical is no greater than 60°,
 collapsible parts should be blocked in transport position,
 during putting the mower onto another vehicle it is forbidden for anybody to remain in transport
area,
 on the vehicle’s trailer the machine should be secured against moving.

Securing both the danger area and activity performed shall lie under the
responsibility of the person in charge of the mower transportation.

4.5. Operating parts
 Prior to operating the mower check the knife, knife mountings and the knife holder condition.
 Worn or damaged knives, knife mountings or knife holders should be replaced immediately
with new ones.
WARNING!
During replacement of working parts, it should be used personal protective
gloves.
4.6. PTO shaft
 Before operating learn provisions found in bar manufacturer's manual placed on the shaft.
 Use only PTO shafts recommended by the mower's manufacturer.
 In order to operate safely use only fully technically fit, undamaged PTO shafts. Damaged PTO
shaft shall be repaired or replaced with new one.
 Before any operation make sure whether PTO rpm have proper rotational direction.
4.7. Tarpaulin guards
Due to their storing, SaMASZ manufactured mowers feature standard tarpaulin guards (1)
for self-mounting. In order to mount the guard properly put it on a mower and secure with catches
(2) and with front guard (3) Fig. 6. Examine condition of guards and its mounting on regular basis.

4.8. Residual risk
Despite the fact, that company SaMASZ– the manufacturer of that mower takes responsibility
for design and manufacturing of the mower, in order to eliminate dangerous situations, certain risk
during mower operation is unavoidable.
Major source of risk follows performance of these operations:
 operation of mower by minors as well as not being familiarized with operator's manual,
 operation of mower by persons under influence of alcohol or other abusive substances,
 not keeping caution while transportation and shifting of mower during operation,
 transport of persons remaining on the machine,
 presence of persons and animals within the mower operation range,
 performing operations related to servicing and adjustment with engine on.
1) Danger of getting caught or pulled in by the machine
This danger occurs during changing the positioning of the mower, or working on the mower
while the rotating elements are in operation and with the guards removed.
During operation, maintenance or adjustments to the mower always use protective gloves,
covered footwear, protective clothing without any loose elements, such as belts etc. Always observe
the warnings on the mower.
2) Danger of injury, abrasion and damage of skin
Present when replacing working parts with sharp edges, cleaning the machine and removal of
any clogging and seizure. During all repairs and maintenance always wear protective gloves. At any
repair and maintenance work safety gloves shall always be worn.
WARNING!
Residual risk always results from incorrect behaviour of mower’s operator.
3) Prohibited activity
Please bear in mind the following bans during mower’s operation:
 never unblock the mower, make any regulations or repairs of the mower while it is in motion,
 never change the order of operation and maintenance activities described in operator’s manual,
 never operate the mower when it is not in working order or has damaged safety guards,
 never get your hands and legs close to rotating parts of the mower,

 during repair and maintenance of the mower always comply with the descriptions included in
operator’s manual. Always do these activities when the vehicle’s drive is off,
 before you start any activities, focus your attention on them,
 never operate the mower under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or strong medicines,
 your clothes should not be too loose, or too tight. Too loose cloth parts may be pulled in by
the rotating parts of the mower,
 the mower cannot be operated by children or by handicapped people.
When describing residual risk, the mower is treated as a machine, that up to the moment of its
putting in motion it had been designed and manufactured according to technology level actual till
the day of mower’s manufacture.
WARNING!
Despite following the specified instructions and prohibitions, residual risk is
still present.
4.8.1. Residual risk evaluation
When keeping such recommendations as:
 thorough familiarizing with operator’s manual,
 no persons remaining on the machine when operating and during drives,
 no persons remaining within the mower operation range,
 adjustment, maintenance and lubrication of the machine with engine off,
 performing repairs of the machine only by skilled persons,
 operation of the machine by persons, which are familiarized with operator’s manual,
 in the event of the machine protection against children and unauthorized personnel residual risk
when operating the mower may be limited to necessary minimum.
When the risk of exposing to noise cannot be avoided or eliminated by any group
protective means or organization of work, employer (farmer) must:
1) provide the operator with individual means of noise protection, if the noise
level in work place exceeds 80 dB.
2) provide the operator with individual means of noise protection and supervise
the correctness of its usage, if the noise level in work place reaches or
exceeds 85 dB.
4.9. Warning decals and their meaning
NOTICE:
a) all warning decals should be clean and legible,
b) lost or damaged decals must be replaced,
c) please order new decals from your dealer or supplier.

5. USING THE MOWER
5.1. Attaching the mower to self-propelled mower FORTSCHRITT
Drive from self-propelled mower FORTSCHRITT is transmitted on mower’s cutterbar
through joint shaft (2), intersecting axis gear (1) and PTO shaft (4) (Fig. 8).
The mower id driven by the PTO shaft with friction clutch (4). When connecting PTO shaft
between self-propelled machine and mower make sure, that external guard tube of the shaft is on
FORTSCHRITT’s side (Fig. 8).
Intersecting axis gear (1) is mounted on the special bracket (3) welded to self-propelled
machine over the right wheel (Fig. 8).

Mounting of the bracket may be done by SaMASZ crew or you can do it by yourself
according to the manual provided by the manufacturer (ATTACHMENT 1. Mounting of the
bracket in self-propelled mower FORTSCHRITT).

5.1.1. Mounting PTO shaft
During PTO assembly, pay attention to the pictogram placed on the shaft. It is indicating the
correct assembly direction.
Prior to commencing operation, examine and adjust length of PTO shaft, which is designed to
mount machine on vehicle. The cover should be secured so that it does not spin by securing the
holding chains to a permanent part of the body of the vehicle and the loop on the guard of the
splined shaft of the mower drive shaft.
WARNING!
If need be, shorten the PTO shaft according to its operator’s manual given by
the shaft’s manufacturer (Fig. 9).

WARNING!
Use the machines with PTO shafts designed to drive them. Before the work
begins, check the safety guards (in tractor, mower and PTO shaft), if they are
placed correctly and are not damaged. Damaged or lost parts must be replaced
with genuine ones. Make sure the PTO shaft is properly mounted. It is
forbidden to approach the rotating parts, because it may lead to serious injuries
or even death. All service and repair operations must be done only after the
tractor engine has been stopped, all rotating parts have come to the complete
standstill and the cutterbar is on the ground. Before the operation begins, read
operator’s manuals of both the machine and PTO shaft.
5.2. Preparing the mower for operation
Before operation please learn the above provisions in 5.1. Attaching the mower to self-
propelled mower FORTSCHRITT. After the above is completed the mower shall be considered
as ready for operation. Then depending on a machine version, follow instructions given hereinafter.
5.2.1. Adjusting the mower to work conditions
 Optimum inclination of the cutterbar towards the ground is between 0° to 5°. If the inclination
exceeds 5°, there might be a slight unevenness of the mowed grass. It impairs slightly the
quality of mowing and has an influence on mower’s operation. When the cutterbar is pulled in
the other way, it significantly impairs the quality of mowing and in some cases the mower stops
mowing. Besides, it may lead to premature wear or even damage of the slides and cutterbar.
 Too high PTO rpm whirl the air, which may cause the inclination of the grass in front of the
discs. It impairs the quality of mowing.
 Too low PTO rpm impair the quality of mowing and in some cases the mower stops
mowing.(too low linear velocity of the knife).
 In case of mowing low grass, front safety guard should be lifted to reduce blasts of wind around
the discs and reduce the pressure of the safety guard on the grass.
 In case of mowing soft meadows the pressure of the cutterbar on the ground should be reduced
by adjusting support springs.
5.3. Operation
5.3.1. Basic information on mowing
 Cutting height is adjusted by the regulating bars (Fig. 2), which connect suspension frame to the
main frame. It enables proper cutterbar inclination and cutting height adjusment.
 Drive should be turned on, when the cutterbar comes to conntact with the ground.
 Slowly engage the PTO clutch and wait until the cutting unit reaches its rated speed. engage
tractor gear and drive slowly into the grass-field.
 Swath guides with adjustable swath width mounted in the mower allow the machine
FORTSCHRITT to drive on not causing crush to grass by the wheels.
 1.2 m – 1.6 m wide swath may be collected with self-collecting trailer or baler.
 In real life the user should use so called "common sense". In regards with this during intense
usage the cost of necessary service checks should be taken into account - see point 11.

5.3.2. Removing clogging and jams
When operating the mower pay attention to variable conditions on field, which may influence
the mower clogging and jams, such as: terrain unevenness, height and density of grass as well as
other objects in the grass (stones, branches, piles of soil). In order to avoid clogging and jams,
operating speed should be adjusted to the mentioned conditions.
WARNING!
Removing clogs and jams while the machine is in operation can lead to the
accident!
In case of machine blockage caused by wrapped material, set the machine on a flat surface,
remove excess material using sharp tool. After clearing the machine check if nothing has been
damaged.
To remove any clogging it is obligatory to disconnect the drive and the motor, take out the
ignition key. When eliminating any clogging on the machine, use also safety means for operator, so
protective gloves and tight wear.
6. MOUNTING AND ADJUSTMENTS
6.1. Mounting knives
The knives should be mounted as shown in Fig. 10, Fig. 12 and Fig. 14, according to the rule,
that the cutting edges should be directed towards ground, so that a knife will lift the grass after
cutting.

Use only SaMASZ genuine cutting knives.
6.2. Checking the knives and knife holders
WARNING!
Condition of knives and holders should be checked each time before
commencing any operation. Damaged or worn elements pose danger of
throwing and are as well health and life threatening.
WARNING!
When operating pay attention whether there are no excessive vibrations of
the mower which may indicate that the disc(s) operate with 1 cutting knife
attached only. Long-term cutting with insufficient amount of knives will
cause permanent damage to the cutterbar, not eligible for a repair under the
warranty. When operating check knives for completeness.

All knives should have the same lengths and weights. Replace them, if necessary, only in sets.
Make sure all knives in a set are of the same length and weight.
If the knife holder pin is worn too much and/or the knife holder is worn or deformed
(Fig. 11), please replace it immediately.

6.3. Replacing the knives and knife holders
Worn and/or damaged knives should be immediately replaced. Replace knives, if necessary,
only in sets (Fig. 12). Make sure all knives in a set are of the same length and weight. The knife
holders must not be damaged or deformed. If the knife holder pin is worn too much (Fig. 11) both
holders or the pins must be replaced with new ones (tightening torque 130 Nm / 96 ft-lb (Fig. 13)).
WARNING!
When replacing knives the engine must be stopped and the cutterbar must lie
on the ground. PTO shaft must be disconnected. Discs should be perpendicular
to cutterbar (max. rotation ± 20°).

NOTICE:
Check disc turns, before you change the knife (Fig. 14).
WARNING!
Different mounting of the knives will block the mower. When mounting pay
particular attention to loose rotation of the knife on the knife holder pin.
NOTICE:
Because of high discs rpm, knife holders should be changed in sets of the same
weight – on every holder there is its weight written. Improperly changed knife
holders will damage disc bearings.

6.4. Adjustment of swath guides
Swath width is adjusted with swath guides mounted on the 3-point linkage frame of
the cutterbar (Fig. 15).
In order to adjust the guide, the following should be performed:
 loosen locknuts and screws (2) (Tab. 5),
 shift the guide arm (5),
 tighten screws and locknuts (2),
