PCU-110 Operation Manual

Polarization Control Unit PCU-110
1-1
Introduction
1
The PCU-110 is a polarization state generation device. This device is capable of
generating 6 special states of polarization (SOP) across the Poincare sphere: linear
polarization states at 0°, +90°, +45°, and –45° as well as right hand circular (RCP)
and left hand circular (LCP) polarization states, relative to the axis defined by an
internal linear polarizer. The actual output polarization states may be rotated due to
the output single mode ber, so the exact SOP locations on the Poincaré sphere of
the Polarimeter may be different. However, the 6 generated polarization states will
symmetrically cover the Poincaré sphere with the same angular relationship.

These are slits for ventilation and cooling. It is important that the unit is used
in a location which allows cool air to ow freely into the slits.
(2) Rubber Feet
The rubber feet provide mechanical isolation from external shocks and
vibrations. They also allow an air gap beneath the slits ensuring ventilation
and cooling for the instrument.
Please use without removing the rubber feet.

Basic Operation
5
PCU-110 is controlled by software working on external computer. PCU-110 supports
GPIB, LAN and USB as means of communication. The setting method, characteristics,
and differences of each method are described below.
PCU-110 can be used with santec PDL Swept Test System. The system software is
provided with attached USB stick.
5-1 GPIB
A communication function based on standards specied in IEEE-488.2.
CAUTION
To prevent equipment failure, be sure to turn off the power before connecting or
disconnecting the communication cable connector.
■5-1-1 Connection
Connect the 24-pin GPIB cable to the GPIB connector on the rear panel.
The total extension of the connected cable shall be 20 m or less. The cable
length between each device must be 2 m or less. At most, 15 devices can be
connected.
The default address setting is “5”. GPIB address can be changed by command.

CAUTION
Do not disconnect or connect a cable from and to devices connected with GPIB
cable, do not short-circuit the connector, and do not turn ON/OFF the devices.
Otherwise, actions may be stopped or errors may occur, causing a failure. In the
event of such failure, reset all the connected devices, and then activate the system
once again.
When conguring a system, remove the unused device or unnecessary cable and
return to the original setup.
■5-1-2 GPIB Function
GPIB has 10 kinds of interface functions, each of which has its grade that is
called its subset. A “0” after the symbol of each function shows that support is
not made, and each numeric value represents grade.
Symbol Function PCU-110 Subset
SH Source handshake SH1: All functions
AH Acceptor handshake AH1: All functions
T Talker T8: Basic talker, listener release by MLA
L Listener L4: Basic listener, talker release by MLA
SR Service request SR1: All functions
RL Remote/Local RL1: Switching remote/local, local lockout
PP Parallel poll PP0: none
DT Device trigger DT0: none
DC Device clear DC1: All functions
