Follow the cautions below when using this unit.
zThe unit is affected by the environment in which it is installed. Do not install your unit
in the following area.
−Dusty areas
If dust enters the interior of the unit, damage or poor-quality output can result.
−Areas in direct sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause distortion to some parts which
may result in poor quality output.
−Excessively hot, cold, humid, or dry areas (for example, near heaters, humidifiers,
or air conditioners) may result in damp paper, or condensation within the internal
mechanisms causing misfeeds, or dirty output.
zOperating Conditions
Temperature : 10-35 degrees Celsius (50-95 degrees Fahrenheit)
Relative humidity : 20%-85%
Note : When the temperature reaches 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit),
the relative humidity must be 60% or less.
zThe power outlet should be near the equipment, and should be easily accessible.
zWhen moving the unit, be sure to first turn the power switch off, and then remove the
power cord from the outlet.
zPlace the unit on a firm, level surface.
zBe sure to use genuine SHARP ink tanks.
zIf you get ink spots on your skin, wash with water as soon as possible.
zStore spare ink tanks out of the reach of children.
zFor the disposal of the spent ink tank, pack it in a plastic bag.

INTRODUCTION
This unit is a full colour multifunctional peripheral, providing you with copier, printer, and
scanner functions.
MAIN FEATURES
Printer features
zHigh-speed printing at 16ppm (monochrome), or 9ppm (colour).*1
z2400dpi x 1200dpi printing with smoothing produces outstanding quality images
(Standard resolution is 600dpi).
zA variety of editing functions such as adding watermarks or multiple printing onto one
page.
Copier features
zHigh-speed copying at 16cpm (monochrome), or 9cpm (colour).*1
zA scan once print many (SOPM) feature*2 provides high productivity.
zA variety of functions including posters and reversing scanned images enable you to
use this unit for various purposes.
Scanner features
zHigh quality scanning at 600dpi x 2400dpi with a broad range of colour reproduction.
zEasy operation with just pressing the scan button on the unit.
zHigh-speed scanning using the Compression Scan (or Quick Scan) function.
General features
zFor black output, carbon black ink provides clear copying/printing quality comparable
to laser copier/printer level.
zEach ink tank is independent, they can be used until completely spent, ensuring
minimum waste of ink. The print head is also fully detachable, requiring no special
tools for replacement.
zThe unit is equipped with a 150 sheet*3 capacity paper tray, allowing the user to copy/
print big jobs without constantly refilling the tray.
zUSB interface*4 enable you to make simple Hotplug*5 connections. Parallel interface
is also equipped as standard.
z
The output tray is located inside the unit, making this unit compact to save office space.
zDesigned to save energy with low power consumption.
zThis unit can be used with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT
Workstation 4.0 (Service Pack 4 or later), Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP
Professional and Windows XP Home Edition.
*1 When using SHARP original data with A4/8.5"x11" paper in the fastest mode
(copier) or draft mode (printer).
*2 By storing the scanned data in memory, this unit can make multiple copies with
only scanning once.
*3 With 80g/m2(21lbs.) plain paper.
*4 USB can only be used with computers which have a USB interface and have
Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP

SETTING UP THE UNIT
SETUP PROCEDURE
When using the unit for the first time, setup the unit following the procedure shown below.
Open the package, and make sure that all
the accessories are supplied with the unit.
ReferenceSetup workflow
Remove the protective materials.
Attach the paper tray and the output tray.
Connect the interface cable.
Connect the power cord.
Select an appropriate language.
Install the print heads and the ink tanks.
Align the print head.
Install the software.
Now, you can copy, print, or scan
your document.

UNPACKING
1Remove tapes to shown in the illustrations.
2Open the front cover, and remove the protective material
shown in the illustration.
Refer to step 4 of "INSTALLING THE PRINT HEADS AND THE INK TANKS" for
details on how to open the front cover. (See page 15)
3Release the scan head locking switch.
4Close the front cover.
Refer to step 14 of "INSTALLING THE PRINT HEADS AND THE INK TANKS" for
details on how to close the front cover. (See page 18)

ATTACHING THE TRAYS
Attach the paper tray and the output tray to the front of the unit.
Follow the steps shown below.
1Attach the paper tray by firmly pushing down both edges.
2Attach the output tray as shown in the illustration.
Refer to "LOADING PAPER" for more information. (See page 24)
Make sure that the paper tray has been
securely attached to the body.
Push here to fix the paper tray securely.

CONNECTING THE INTERFACE CABLE
This unit includes both USB and parallel interface connectors.
Interface cables for connecting the unit to your computer are not included with this unit.
Please purchase the appropriate cable for your computer.
Connecting the USB interface cable
1Obtain a shielded USB interface cable.
2Insert the cable into the USB interface connector located on the
rear of the unit.
3Insert the other end of the cable into the interface connector of
your computer, or the USB hub connected to your computer.
Connecting the parallel interface cable
1Obtain an IEEE1284 shielded parallel interface cable.
2Ensure that your computer and unit are turned off.
3Insert the cable into the parallel interface connector located on
the rear of the unit, and fasten with clasps.
4Insert the other end of the cable into the interface connector of
your computer.
zThis unit is equipped with two types of interface connectors, which enables you
to connect two computers at a time.
zWith the automatic interface switching function, you can print a document by
simply sending a printing job from each computer.
USB is available with a PC/AT compatible computer that was originally equipped
with USB and had Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Professional,
Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition preinstalled.

CONNECTING THE POWER CORD
1Insert the power cord into the socket on the rear of the unit.
2Connect the other end of the power cord to an outlet.
The unit will be turned on automatically.
When the power is turned on for the first time
The following message appears in the display when you turn on the unit for the first time
after purchasing it.
Once setup is completed, this message will no longer appear. After this, proceed to
"SELECTING THE DESIRED LANGUAGE FOR DISPLAY MESSAGES" (See the next page).
If any other messages appear, refer to "CANCELLING AN ERROR MESSAGE" (See page 72).
HOW TO SHUT OFF POWER
1Press the "POWER" button ()
to turn off the unit. Make sure
that nothing appears on the display panel.
2Unplug the power cord from the outlet.
Do not connect the unit to other than a local voltage outlet. Plugging the unit into
an incompatible power supply may cause irreparable damage.
Auto Power Off
This unit turns off automatically when the scheduled period elapses after the last
operation. Press the "POWER" button ( ) to turn on the unit again. The period
before Auto Power Off can be changed (See Page 57).
zBe sure that the plug in the outlet is readily accessible to all persons. Power is
present in the product even if the "POWER" button ( ) is off in order to
maintain good copy or print quality.
zTo completely shut off the power, first turn off the power using the "POWER"
button ( ). Then unplug the power cord.
zDo not remove the power cord unit when in use.

zWhen no print head is installed, the unit cannot be turned off by pressing
the "POWER" button ( ).

DISPLAY MESSAGES
The following message appears when you turn on the unit for the first time after purchasing.
Select the desired language for the display messages. The default setting is "2. English".
Follow the steps shown below to select the desired language.
To select English
1Press the "ENTER" button when the message shown above is
on the display panel.
The following message appears.
2Repeatedly press or "ARROW" buttons to display "2. Yes"
on the second line of the display panel.
3Press the "ENTER" button.
The following message appears. Now, the desired language is successfully selected.
To select languages other than English (Example: To select French)
1Repeatedly press or "ARROW" buttons until "3. Français"
on the second line of the display panel.
2Press the "ENTER" button.
The following message appears.
3Repeatedly press or "ARROW" buttons to display "2. Yes"
on the second line of the display panel.
4Press the "ENTER" button.
The following message appears. Now, the desired language is successfully selected.
For display and button functions, refer to "OPERATION PANEL" (See page 40).
If you need to change the display language after completing the setting, see
"CHANGING THE LANGUAGE SETTING". (See page 58)

Installing the Print Heads
1Make sure that the scan head locking switch is released.
Refer to step 3 of "UNPACKING", see page 10.
2Make sure that the power is on.
For the location of the "POWER" button ( ) (See page 40).
3Set A4 sized paper in the tray by following steps shown in
"LOADING PAPER" on page 24.
4Turn the front cover locking knob with one hand and lift the
front cover with the other hand, while keeping the knob in the
unlocked position.
z
During ink tank replacement, if the cover is left open for more than 8 minutes,
the carriage will automatically return to its home position.
To move the carriage
to the centre position again, close the front cover and then open it again.
z
This section describes how to install the print heads and ink tanks when you install
them for the first time after purchasing this unit. Refer to "THE INK TANK" (See page
64) or "THE PRINT HEAD" (See page 66) when they need to be changed.
Keep the front cover open securely while installing print heads and ink tanks. You may
get your hand caught between the body and the front cover of the unit if you install
them with the front cover half open as shown in the illustration marked with an "X".

5Open the maintenance cover.
6Raise the print head latch.
Raise the latch until it comes to a complete halt.
7Remove the print heads from their protective cases.
8Insert the print heads.
Insert the black print head into the left carriage opening, and the colour print head
into the right carriage opening.
Be careful not to damage the print heads. If any of them is damaged, the unit may
not work properly.
Lift up firmly as
far as it will go.
Press the knob in the direction of
the arrow to release the lock.

Do not touch the metal portion of the print
head directly. Doing so may make the head
inoperable.

9Lower the print head latch.
Lower the latch until it clicks into the latched position.
Inserting the ink tanks
10 Unpack the ink tanks from their protective wrapping and slowly
remove the tape.
11 Turn the ink tanks upside down.
Make sure that the print head is fixed securely. Failing to do so may generate
noise or cause errors.
zHold the ink tank upright when removing the tape. Do not touch the uncovered
opening on the ink tank, as ink will get on your hands.
zEnsure that there are no pieces of tape remaining on the ink tank.
Do not touch the area.
The unit may not copy if it is dirty.

12 Insert each of the ink tanks to the print head of the
corresponding number.
13 Close the maintenance cover.
14 Close the front cover.
Press both edges of the front cover with both of your hands until it locks.
Make sure that the numbers on the ink tanks correspond to the numbers on the print
heads. If they do not correspond to each other, print problems will occur. In this case,
replace the ink tanks to the correct positions, and then print a test page referring to
"PRINTING A TEST PAGE" (See page 69). Before sending any print job to the printer
make sure that the test page is successfully printed.
