WARNINGS
!When the ON/STAND-BY button is set at STAND-BY position,
mains voltage is still present inside the unit. When the ON/
STAND-BY button is set at STAND-BY position, the unit may be
brought into operation by the timer mode or remote control.
!This unit contains no user serviceable parts. Never remove cov-
ers unless qualified to do so. This unit contains dangerous volt-
ages, always remove mains plug from the socket before any
service operation and when not in use for a long period.
!To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose this appliance to
dripping or splashing. No objects filled with liquids, such as
vases, shall be placed on the apparatus.

Precautions
"General
!Please ensure that the equipment is positioned in a well venti-
lated area and ensure that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free
space along the sides, top and back of the equipment.
!Do not place anything on top of the unit.
!Do not expose the unit to moisture, to temperatures higher than
60°C (140°F) or to extremely low temperatures.
!If your system does not work properly, disconnect the AC power
lead from the wall socket. Plug the AC power lead back in, and
then turn on your system.
!The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation
openings with items, such as newspapers, tablecloths, curtains,
etc.
!No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be
placed on the apparatus.
!Attention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of bat-
tery disposal.
!This unit should only be used within the range of 5°C - 35°C
(41°F - 95°F).
Warning:
The voltage used must be the same as that specified on this unit.
Using this product with a higher voltage other than that which is
specified is dangerous and may result in a fire or other type of acci-
dent causing damage. SHARP will not be held responsible for any
damage resulting from use of this unit with a voltage other than that
which is specified.
"Volume control
The sound level at a given volume setting depends on speaker effi-
ciency, location, and various other factors. It is advisable to avoid
exposure to high volume levels. Do not turn the volume on to full at
switch on and listen to music at moderate levels.
!Use the unit on a firm, level surface free from
vibration.
!Keep the unit away from direct sunlight,
strong magnetic fields, excessive dust,
humidity and electronic/electrical equip-
ment (home computers, facsimiles, etc.)
which generate electrical noise.
!In case of an electrical storm, unplug the
unit for safety.
!Hold the AC power plug by the head when
removing it from the wall socket, as pulling
the lead can damage internal wires.

tures may not be clear (depends on resolution and recording
method).

"Icons used on DVD discs
Check the icons of the DVD jacket before playing your discs. "Discs that cannot be played
Notes:
!The discs above cannot be played at all, or no sound is heard
although images appear on the screen or vice versa.
!Faulty playback may damage the speakers and can have an
adverse effect on your hearing when played at high volume set-
tings.
!You cannot play illegally produced discs.
!A disc with scratches or fingerprints may not play properly. Refer
to "Care of discs" (page 60) and clean the disc.
Display Description

"DVD-Video
A popular type of DVD disc of the same size as a CD, mainly con-
taining video images.
Region number
Title and chapter
DVD-Video discs are divided into "titles" and "chapters". If the disc
has more than one movie on it, each movie is a separate "title".
"Chapters" are subdivisions of titles.
"DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW
!You can play DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW discs recorded
in the video mode.
!Before playing DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW discs with
this unit, finalize them with the equipment used for record-
ing.
"Video CD/audio CD
Track
Video CD and audio CD are composed of "tracks". Tracks are equiv-
alent to songs on a CD.
DVD discs are programmed with region
numbers indicating countries in which
they can be played. This system can
play discs with region number "4" or
"ALL".

"MP3/JPEG format on CD-R/CD-RW
An MP3 file is audio data compressed in the MPEG 1 audio layer 3
format. MP3 files have the extension ".mp3". (Files with the exten-
sion ".mp3" may not play, or noise may occur during playback if not
recorded in the MP3 format.)
A JPEG file is still image data compressed in the JPEG (Joint Pho-
tographic Experts Group) format. JPEG files have the extension
".jpg".

"Aerial connection
Note:
Placing the aerial on the stereo system or near the AC power lead
may cause noise pickup. Place the aerial away from the stereo sys-
tem for better reception.
Installing the AM loop aerial:
External FM aerial:
Use an external FM aerial if you require better reception. Consult
your dealer.
"Speaker connection
Insert the front speaker plugs (black) into the FRONT terminals.
Insert the subwoofer plug (red) into the SUBWOOFER terminal.
Caution:
"Front speaker grills are removable
Supplied FM aerial:
Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS
socket and position the FM aerial wire in the di-
rection where the strongest signal can be re-
ceived.
Supplied AM loop aerial:
Connect the AM loop aerial to the AM LOOP
socket. Position the AM loop aerial for optimum
reception. Place the AM loop aerial on a shelf,
etc., or attach it to a stand or a wall with screws
(not supplied).

External FM aerial
!The supplied speakers are exclusively for the XL-DV60H. Do
not connect them to other equipment, and do not connect
other speakers to the XL-DV60H. It may cause malfunction.
!Use speakers with an impedance of 6 ohms or more, as lower im-
pedance speakers can damage the unit.
!Do not mistake the right and the left channels. The right speaker
is the one on the right side when you face the unit.
!Do not allow any objects to fall into or to be placed in the bass re-
flex ducts of the speakers.
!Do not stand or sit on the speakers. You may be injured.
Make sure nothing comes into contact with the
speaker diaphragm when you remove the
speaker grilles.

"Placing the speaker system
Notes:
!Place the TV halfway between the front speakers.
!The bass sound from the subwoofer is omni-directional, however,
it is recommended to place it as close as left and right speakers.
!Place the subwoofer on a sturdy and stable surface as it tends to
vibrate whilst reproducing bass sounds.
!Keep the free space of at least 10 cm (4") along the right side of
the subwoofer.
"Magnetically shielded speakers
The speakers are magnetically shielded.
Therefore, they do not affect the display even you use them near the
TV. However, some colour variation may occur, depending on the
type of TV used.
If colour variation occurs...
Turn off the TV (from the power switch).
After 15 - 30 minutes, turn the TV on again.
If the colour variation is still present...
Move the speakers further away from the TV.
If any kind of magnet or an electromagnet is placed too close to the
TV and the system, irregular colours may appear on the TV screen.
"TV connection
Three types of sockets (VIDEO OUT, S-VIDEO OUT and SCART
OUT) are available for connection of a TV and this unit. Connect
according to your TV.
Connecting to a TV with a video input socket:
You can enjoy DVD images by connecting your TV and this unit with
the supplied video cable.

Set the video output mode to "S-Video" (default setting). For the
procedure, refer to "Changing the initial setting of DVD" on pages
48, 50.
Change the input mode on the TV accordingly.
Press the SHIFT button and ANGLE/NTSC/PAL button on the re-
mote control.
Each time these buttons are pressed, the mode will change in the
following order:

Connecting to a TV with an S-video input socket:
If your TV is equipped with an S-video input socket, you can enjoy
higher quality images by connecting it with an S-video cable (not
supplied).
Note:
When the video and S-video cables are both connected, the images
from the S-video input socket appears on your TV.
Connecting to a TV with SCART socket:
If your TV is equipped only with a SCART input socket (without
video), connect a SCART cable (not supplied) to enjoy images.
Set the video output mode to "S-Video" (default setting). For the
procedure, refer to "Changing the initial setting of DVD" on pages
48, 50.

"Connecting the AC power lead
After checking all the connections have been made correctly, con-
nect the AC power lead to the AC power input socket, then plug the
AC power lead of this unit into the wall socket. If you plug in the unit
first, the unit will enter the demonstration mode.
Notes:
!Never use a power lead other than the one supplied. Otherwise, a
malfunction or an accident may occur.
!Unplug the AC power lead from the wall socket if the unit will not
be in use for a prolonged period of time.

Cooling fan:
A cooling fan is built into this unit for better heat radiation. Do not
cover the opening in this section with any obstacles to avoid dam-
age to the unit.

DEMO button again.
Note:
When the power is on, the X-BASS/DEMO button can be used to se-
lect the extra bass mode.

ton to turn the power on.
After use:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the power stand-by
mode.

"Battery installation
Precautions for battery use:
!Replace all old batteries with new ones at the same time.
!Do not mix old and new batteries.
!Remove the batteries if the unit is not to be used for long periods
of time. This will prevent potential damage due to battery leak-
age.
Caution:
!Do not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium battery, etc.).
!Installing the batteries incorrectly may cause the unit to malfunc-
tion.
Battery removal:
Remove the battery cover. Push each battery toward the battery
terminal and take them out.
Notes concerning use:
!Replace the batteries if the operating distance is reduced or if the
operation becomes erratic. Purchase 2 "AA" size batteries (UM/
SUM-3, R6, HP-7 or similar).
!Periodically clean the transmitter on the remote control and the
sensor on the unit with a soft cloth.
!Exposing the sensor on the unit to strong light may interfere with
operation. Change the lighting or the direction of the unit if this
occurs.
!Keep the remote control away from moisture, heat, shock, and
vibrations.

Check the remote control after checking all the connections (see
pages 14 - 18).
Point the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the unit.
The remote control can be used within the range shown below:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button. Does the power turn on? Now, you
can enjoy music.

2 Insert the supplied batteries according to the direction indi-
cated in the battery compartment.
When inserting or removing the batteries, push them toward the
battery terminals.
