Before Use (Be sure to read the following and handle the product carefully.)
This product is a PM4 filter holder with 20 L/min aspiration rate. Do not use it for any applications not
indicated in this manual.
This is precision manufactured product. Handle it very carefully. In particular, performance may
deteriorate significantly if the aspiration port is scratched or otherwise damaged.
This product is assembled from a large number of parts. Therefore, handle it with particular care.
Overview
The PM4 filter holder with inertial impaction particle size separator (hereafter "NW-354") is a filter collection
unit equipped with an inertial impaction type PM4 particle size separator. First, more than 50 % of 4 μm
particles and 100 % of over 4 μm particles are collected on a glass collection plate. Then, any respirable
particles that make it pass the glass collection plate are collected on a PTFE binder filter. Samples
collected on the glass collection plate can then be analyzed directly in an X-ray diffractometer.
Theory of Particle Separation by Inertial Impaction
Inertial impaction particle size separators separate particles based on the particle paths deviating from the
path of air flow due to inertia. The faster the particles, the higher their inertia. When an obstacle is used to
change the direction of air flow, the particles suspended in the air try to keep moving straight ahead due to
inertia, which allows separating them from the air flow. This theory and experimental work was established
by Ranz and Wong.

Structure of the NW-354
This filter collector system is equipped with an inertial impaction type particle size separator to collect large
particles in grease applied to a glass collection plate and collect other respirable particles that pass by that
plate on a PTFE binder filter.

Component Parts
Using the NW-354
(1) Applying Silicone Grease (sold separately) to the Glass Collection Plate
a. Remove the glass collection plate from the clip case (made of clear plastic) and place the grease
guide on top of the plate. Mix the silicone grease thoroughly in its container with a micro spatula
used to spread the grease. Then remove the grease, placing it approximately in the center of the
glass collection plate. Use the spreading spatula to spread the silicone grease evenly across the top
of the glass plate.
b. Initially the grease coating will be bumpy, but will eventually become smooth after several hours. Be
careful not to apply too much grease, which will spread out over time and flow off of the glass or
adhere to the lid of the clip case.
c. Use a balance to weigh the glass plate with grease applied and then return it to the clip case. (If
measuring only PM4 particles, then the glass collection plate does not need to be weighed.
However, weigh the plate if mass data for particles larger than PM4 captured on the glass collection
plate is required.)
●The grease recommended by Sibata (080150-011 and 080150-012) is a mixture of two types.
They can separate during storage, so mix well before use.
Grease (sold separately)
To collect particles on the glass collection plate, grease is applied to the plate to prevent the collected
particles from blowing away. The air passing through the particle size separator nozzle is flowing at
extremely high speeds. Consequently, a highly viscous grease that can withstand such air flow should be
used. Therefore, please use the grease recommended by Sibata.

(2) Weighing the PTFE Binder Filter
Weigh the PTFE binder filter. Then install the filter in the filter clips, install the clips in the clip case, and
the clip case in the filter mounting case.
(3) Installing the Glass Collection Plate and PTFE Binder Filter
a. Use tweezers to remove the glass collection plate, with
silicone grease applied, from the clip case. Place the
glass collection plate on impaction table A, so that the
glass collection plate is aligned with the glass removal
slot A (see the figure to the left).
b. Use tweezers to center the glass collection plate on the
impaction table. Then secure the glass collection plate
by pressing on the glass retainer with the grip end of
the tweezers.
c. Screw the nozzle into impaction table A.
d. Place the filter clips, with a PTFE binder filter installed,
on the holder base and screw impaction table B onto
the holder base.
e. Screw impaction table A, with the nozzle installed, into
impaction table B.
f. That completes preparation of the NW-354.
Note ●See the Component Parts drawing above.
●If the glass collection plate is difficult to install, use the grip end of the tweezers to push
up the glass retainer and reposition the glass collection plate in advance so that it is
easier to install.
(4) Sampling Air
a. Connect the air aspiration pump and the NW-354 with a tube. A tube with an inside diameter of
10 mm can be installed.
b. Adjust the flowrate on the air aspiration pump so that air is sampled at 20 L/min.
(5) Weighing After Collection
After collecting particles, carefully remove the NW-354 and weigh the PTFE binder filter.
(To also measure particles larger than PM4, weigh the glass collection plate as well.)
Precautions for Use
The NW-354 is made of plastic. Therefore, handle it carefully and keep it clean.
After using the glass collection plate, immerse it in a neutral cleaning solution to remove any
contaminants from surfaces. Then rinse it in tap water, rinse it in purified (distilled) water, and dip it in
alcohol, before wiping it with gauze and storing it the clip case.
