SUBJECT: Manufacturing Discontinuation Notice for
SIMATIC Series 500 and 5TI/6MT Product Families
The SIMATIC Series 500 Product Family has had a long and successful life. Born in the early
1980's, the Series 500 Product Family was matured in the late 1980’s and is still being manufactured
10 years later in order to meet our customers needs. Siemens recognizes the need for this long-term
commitment for the products it provides for the industrial marketplace. Siemens also recognizes the
need to keep customers aware of the status of its older product lines.
Therefore, in keeping with the terms of the Classification Change Notice of October 1996 for
these products, Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. is announcing the Discontinuation of
Manufacture of the SIMATIC Series 500 and 6MT Product Families as follows:

.This early notification is being given in order to give our customers ample opportunity to
purchase adequate spares or make other adjustments in order to sustain their process for the
duration. This move is necessitated by the fast moving nature of the electronics industry with its
relentless elimination of older electronic component parts, combined with a substantial decline in
customer demand for these products, making continued production impractical. Fortunately, the
SIMATIC 505 line as the successor product line provides a viable alternative solution in most cases.
The SIMATIC Series 505 Product Family, the next generation to the Series 500, was
developed to simplify the automation control task and give our customers a competitive edge with
state-of-the-art performance at an affordable price. The transition of our customers from the Series
500 to Simatic 505 has been highly successful due to high compatibility and easy transferability of
the user programs via Tisoft or SoftShopfor Windows, as well as universal I/O connectivity.
In addition, the new Series 500 PROFIBUS-DP RBC has been designed to preserve our
customer's investment in Series 500 I/O and associated field wiring by allowing easy re-connection of
Series 500 I/O bases to all Siemens PLC lines now and into the future via PROFIBUS-DP.

The following points will be of interest to our Series 500 customers:
1. Siemens will take new orders for the Series 500 and 6MT products listed on the attachment up
until the "Service Only" date as long as stocks are available. These orders are subject to
standard customer service policies.
2. For this announcement, the list price and terms will remain as stated on the latest price list.
However, these prices are subject to change due to future market conditions.
3. Product lead-times may vary, but all effort will be made to satisfy customer demands.
4. Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. Standard Policy for phased-out product: Siemens
Energy & Automation, Inc. remains committed to provide at least seven years of service and
support for those SIMATIC products transferred from Texas Instruments, Inc., including upgrades
and additions to that product line made by Siemens. The seven-year support period for the Series
500 and 6MT product families began with the effective announcement in October 1996. However,
Siemens will continue to provide repair services on these products for as long as practical beyond
the seven-year period, just as is being done today with many other obsolete products.
5. The following products are exempted from this announcement and will be sustained for 5 years or
so in order to assist customers in connecting their existing Series 500 I/O bases to newer Siemens
PLC systems via PROFIBUS-DP when desired:

3.10 Setting the CPU Dipswitches
Dipswitches are used to set 545/555 CPU operating parameters. The
dipswitches are located near the front of the CPU, behind the bezel or
battery door . See Figure 3-12. T o gain access, lower the access door . W ith the
CPU in its (normal) vertical position, dipswitches pushed to the left are On;
dipswitches pushed to the right are Off.

SW9 is used to set the back-up battery On or Off. As Figure 3-12 indicates,
moving the switch to the left enables the back-up battery; setting the switch
to the right disables the back-up battery .
NOTE: When SW9 is set to the On position, the battery LED indicates the
state of the battery back-up circuit. If the battery LED is illuminated,
memory contents should be maintained; if the LED is not illuminated,
memory contents will not be maintained.

Setting the CPU Dipswitches (continued)
The 545 and 555 CPUs have two communications ports. Both ports are
configured as Data T erminal Equipment (DTE).
SW2 selects Port 1 as either a programming port or a printer port on a
545/555 CPU. Port 1 uses an RS-232/RS-423 signaling protocol and an
RS-232 pinout arrangement with an RS-423 (+5 V) signal level extending
up to 50 feet (15 m). Y
ou can use a modem to extend this distance.
• Setting SW2 to the left selects Port 1 as a programming port.
• Setting SW2 to the right selects Port 1 as a printer port.
Figure 3-13 shows the locations of Port 1 and Port 2 on the front of the CPU.

W ith the 545 and 555 CPUs, your choice of cabling determines whether
Port 2 functions as an RS-232/RS-423 port or as an RS-422/RS-485 port.
Figure 3-13 describes the pinouts required for the various Port 2 options.
If you use RS-422/RS-485 cabling, SW1 on the dipswitch allows you to select
between RS-422 and RS-485. Use SW1 as follows:
• Set SW1 to the left when you use RS-232 or RS-422 cabling.
• Set SW1 to to the right when you use RS-485 cabling. RS-485 uses a
single twisted pair to transmit and receive data between the
programming device and the 545/555 CPU. Multiple CPUs or multiple
programming devices (on this RS-485 link) are not supported and must
not be used.

For Communication Port 2, the maximum permissible cable length depends
on the type of connection used:
• The RS-232/RS-423 connection can extend a maximum of 50 feet
(15 m).
• The RS-422/RS-485 connection can extend a maximum of 3300 feet
(1 km).
The cable installation for RS-485 or RS-422 can include a 120-ohm
termination resistor across the signal conductors at each end of the cable.
The resistor provides a higher noise immunity and better long-distance
communication.
The 545–1 104/–1 106 and 555 CPUs have two remote I/O ports.
• The I/O port is a 9-pin female port used to communicate directly with
Series 505 RBCs by means of a shielded, twisted-pair RS-485 cable.
• The PROFIBUS-DP port is a 9-pin female port used to communicate to
a variety of PROFIBUS-DP slaves and field devices in daisy-chain
fashion across a shielded, twisted-pair RS-485 cable that meets
PROFIBUS standards.
The 545–1 103 CPU has the option of a PROFIBUS-DP port if you install the
PPX:505–CP5434–DP annex card.
