Milltronics C-40 Solids Flowmeter
Milltronics C-40 solids flowmeter is a low- to medium-capacity flowmeter designed to
NFPA Code 8503 requirements for pulverized coal and coke. It is designed specifically for
applications where the possibility of material combustion or explosion exists. The C-40
flowmeter is equipped with an ILE-37 sensing head and is suitable for material flowrates
up to 40 t/h. The standard sensing head fiberglass cover is replaced by a hinged steel
cover.
The C-40 solids flowmeter is capable of containing an explosion generating an internal
pressure of 50 psi. Upset conditions generating up to 10 psi can be tolerated when a PTFE
inner gasket is used. In normal operation, the internal pressure must be less than 1 psig.
The flowmeter sensing head LVDT output signal is processed by the flowmeter integrator
(ordered separately) to:
• monitor material flow
• maintain accurate material inventory
The following components are included with each Milltronics C-40 flowmeter:
• C-40 flowmeter housing and flowguide
• ILE-37 sensing head (factory mounted)
• spare damping fluid and filler bottle
To complete the Milltronics C-40 flowmeter system, the following parts must be ordered
separately:
• stainless steel sensing plate
• electronic flowmeter integrator
• LVDT Conditioner Card in NEMA 4 enclosure
• calibration weights

Installation
Install the Milltronics C-40 flowmeter in an area that is suitable for the system
classification rating. Maintain sufficient clearance to permit:
• sensing plate installation and removal
• opening the sensing head cover for calibration purposes
Ensure the flowmeter inlet and outlet mounting surface are free from vibration.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the flowmeter into the desired location.
2. If necessary, shim the mounting brackets to establish level in both planes.
3. Fasten the housing discharge to the downstream material chute.
4. Fasten the flowguide to the material infeed chute.
5. Refer to the ILE-37 sensing head instruction manual for levelling, sensing plate
installation, and interconnection instructions.
Note: Ensure sufficient mechanical support is provided for the flowmeter and
chutework for all operating conditions.

Applications
The operational performance and maintenance requirements of a flowmeter application
are directly related to the care and consideration given to material flow patterns.
Material Feed
The following material in-feed characteristics are considered ideal:
• material velocity is constant and relatively low
• material flowrate is uniform (not pulsing)
• air flow through the flowmeter is negligible
• flowguide is always 1/6 to 1/2 full during operation
In cases where material cannot be gravity fed from an elevated bin to the flowmeter,
choose a mechanical feeding device that provides the most consistent material flow.
Most coal scale applications require an airlock on the flowmeter infeed and discharge; in
such cases, rotary airlock feeders can provide the airlock. Install a screw conveyor just
before the flowguide to modulate the heavily pulsing discharge of the infeed rotary
feeder. For best results, overfeed the screw conveyor, maintaining a constant plugged
screw condition.
For high or variable velocity feeder material discharges, employ a reverse flowguide
transition
s. (Refer to Feeder / Flowguide Transition, page 5.)
For slight to moderate material pulsing at a frequency greater than one pulse per second,
use a heavier flowmeter sensing head range spring and/or viscous damper fluid as
compensation.

Rotary Airlock Feeder
Feeder/Flowguide Transition
Short pitch and/or double flight screws are
preferred, reducing the batch size (and increasing
the frequency) of the material discharge pulses.
Alternatively, the flights of a standard screw may
be cut back, ending before the discharge opening.
Consider a reverse flowguide transition for
operating speeds above 40 rpm.
Rotary airlock feeders provide an air seal between
the upstream and/or downstream process and the
flowmeter. This may be required if:
• the material is pneumatically conveyed
• flowmeter/process isolation is required
Best results are obtained from rotary feeders with
more vanes, operating at higher speeds.
Consider a reverse flowguide transition for
operating speeds above 10 rpm.
A
reverse flowguide transition reverses the
direction of the bin or feeder material discharge
before the material enters the flowmeter
flowguide. Reversing direction forces the material
into a desirable flow pattern instead of permitting
material to be flung from the feeder directly into
the flowguide. This transition is especially
important for high or variable speed feeders.
A
forward flowguide transition keeps the material
flowing in the same direction between the bin or
feeder discharge and the flowguide. This transition
is acceptable for a low and constant velocity
feeder. If a forward flow guide transition must be
used for a high or variable speed feeder
application, install a baffle plate.

Dogleg
Short/Long Fall Chutes
A dogleg may be used to reduce material velocity
and the detrimental effect of variable material
velocity. The dogleg is especially important when a
long fall chute must be used. If the material is
abrasive, the chute should be lined with an
abrasion-resistant material.
A material in-feed chute where the bin or feeder
discharge to flowmeter flowguide fall is less than
0.6 m (2 ft) is referred to as a
short fall chute. This
chute is ideal because material velocity caused by
gravity is minimal. The chute centerline and angle
should coincide with that of the flowguide for a
distance greater than or equal to the flowguide
diameter (before the flowguide inlet).
A
long fall chute describes a material in-feed
where the bin or feeder discharge/flowguide fall is
more than 0.6 m (2 ft). The long fall chute is less
desirable than the short fall chute, as material
velocity is increased. Increased material velocity
increases flowmeter component abrasion. Greater
distances after chute angle changes (to settle
material into desirable flow patterns) are also
required.

In-Feed/Discharge Air Pressure
Maintenance
Upset conditions with high pressure generation may cause the sensing head’s internal
components to be contaminated by powder. In this case, the inner gasket may leak or
rupture. It may therefore be necessary to replace the inner gasket, clean out the sensing
head area, and replace the damping fluid. Refer to the instruction manual 7ML19985CW01
for ILE-37 side mount sensing head information.

If a material in-feed/discharge differential air
pressure is anticipated and rotary airlock feeders
are not used, the in-feed and discharge chutes
should be vented to a common dust collector. A
tuning gate may be installed in each chute to
balance the air pressure. If a dust collector is not
used, an air bypass chute may be installed
between the flowmeter in-feed and discharge
chutes.
